THE VISUAL ELEMENTS
There is the risk you cannot afford to take, & there is the risk you cannot afford not to take.

Design ORGANIZED placement of shapes in a format; to refine by PROCESS.
Composition The visual combination of different elements into a unified whole.
2D Design – Elements
Gestalt The psychological study of how the mind organizes what it sees.
2D Design – Elements
Gestalt The WHOLE is seen before the parts.
2D Design – Elements
Gestalt What belongs together and what belongs apart.
2D Design – Elements
A design requires four things to exist.
Format
Plan
Shapes
Contrast
2D Design – Elements
Format The area of organization. The design takes place within the format. NOTHING ever breaks the format.
2D Design – Elements
Format Guidelines Rectangular, edges parallel to the paper’s edges. Must have a margin.
2D Design – Elements
Format Guidelines Centered horizontally. Set off-center vertically, providing a bottom margin larger than the top.
2D Design – Elements
Format Guidelines Project title and name appear at the bottom of each project. Entered in pencil Legible Doesn’t draw attention away from the design.
2D Design – Elements
Plan The element of organization.
2D Design – Elements
Plan Image making is a PROCESS. Ideas must be developed: sketched, altered, discarded, etc.
2D Design – Elements
Plan There is NO DESIGN without a plan.
2D Design – Elements
Plan The plan is developed and shown in your sketches for a project.
2D Design – Elements
Shape A visually perceived area created by:
(contour) line contrast of color Contrast of texture.
Line: Most important role is delineating (to mark the outline of) shape. Shape: Sometimes called form. "form" can also mean composition.
2D Design – Elements
Types of shapes: Rectilinear Sharp-edged geometric forms. Square Rectangle Triangle Rhombus
2D Design – Elements
Types of shapes: Curvilinear Smooth-edged geometric forms. Circle Oval
2D Design – Elements
Types of shapes: Compound Compound shapes can be rectilinear, curvilinear, or a combination of both.
2D Design – Elements
Types of shapes: Organic Organic shapes are almost universally curvilinear.
2D Design – Elements
Types of shapes: Symbols Compound shapes that represent common held meanings. Symbols are NOT allowed to be used in projects.
2D Design – Elements
Every shape drawn creates TWO shapes
2D Design – Elements
The important one is the Figure (positive) shape. The secondary one is the Ground (negative) shape.
2D Design – Elements
The figure + the ground = the picture plane. All areas relate to the design, even the format. Gestalt
2D Design – Elements
Contrast Differences between two (or many) things. Design CANNOT exist without contrast.
