Easter
We’ve been through so much. We’ve seen it all. Or have we? Day after day our hearts are broken by events close and hand and events far away. Holy Week is a time that we go deep into death, despair, and defeat. We ponder, we rejoice as that old week ends with Easter. There is a force greater than death in this old world of ours. That force that comes about through the sacrificial love of God is Easter. Nothing is the same. There is no return to normal. God has acted and God is acting.
April 13 is Palm/Passion Sunday. This will be a large event this year, a Holy Week Cantata at both services. This involves orchestra, bells, choir and narration. The Cantata will be at both the 8:30 and 10:45 services.
In between the services we will have caramel rolls in the Fellowship Hall. The Fellowship Hall has been newly equipped with sound dampening panels that will make it much easier to talk with one an-other. Come and test them out! It is so important that we find ways to connect with one another and grow in relationships in our congregation. Staying for a time to visit with one another is an important way to accomplish this.
Later in Holy Week we gather for worship again on Thursday, April 17, Maundy Thursday. This will be first communion for many of our fifth graders. We join together to remember that last night when Jesus shared his last supper with the disciples. We remember Jesus’ command and go out into the world to better love one another.
The Voice April 2014
On Good Friday we have a community Lutheran worship service at Zion Lutheran at 12:00 noon. We also will have a Good Friday service at Good Shepherd at 7:00 on Friday evening. This is a time to remember the God loves the world so much that God gave Jesus, God’s own Son, to live among us and to die on a cross. Following the Good Friday service we will have an all night prayer vigil from 8:00pm to 8:00am. You can participate in this with our youth. There are more details on this elsewhere in this news-letter.
Easter Sunday begins at 6:30am on Easter Sunday morning, April 20. Additional services are at 8:30 and 10:45. This morning we will also have an Easter breakfast and another opportunity to test our sound dampening panels in the Fellowship Hall.
Jesus is our crucified and risen Lord and Savior. Jesus goes ahead of us in life alive. In the years to come we follow and walk with the risen Lord. It all starts on Easter, the first day of the week and the first day for the rest of our lives.
Little Lambs Preschool
Spring is officially here! The
preschoolers and myself are
loving this weather! The
beginning of March we took our
monthly trip to Mother Joseph
Manor with the 4 & 5 year olds.
We spent the beginning of March
in the classroom learning about
the ocean and had a great time
making octopus art! We also
celebrated St. Patrick’s Day. The
children wore green and the
leprechaun snuck into preschool
that day. The preschoolers tried
to catch him by setting up a trap,
but he was just too sneaky! We
are getting ready to start talking
about Easter and spring time.
Maggie Bruns, Director/Teacher
Receipts, Labels & Milk Jug Caps Thank you to everyone who brings in Kessler’s
& Ken’s receipts and Labels for
Education. Every one you bring in
helps us to get money back for
the preschool for supplies and
learning items, like paint,
construction paper, and much
more! We greatly appreciate it!!
How can you help if your not
already? Bring in receipts from Kessler’s or
Ken’s, or Labels for Education points found on
many different items. Locate the containers for
these items on the table in the Fellowship Hall
and drop them in. That’s it! We are so thankful
to have Virginia Doerr help us count the labels
and receipts, and turn them in.
**Check out the list of eligible products that
qualify for the Labels for Education program
located near the bins in the Fellowship Hall.
These UPC labels are not just found on
Campbell's soups!!

I am very excited about the upcoming Cantata Wondrous Love which includes choir members, friends of the choir, church & community musicians, and our own bell ringers. The music inspires and is uplifting. The Hallelujah Chorus will sing and wave their palms. I hope you will join us on Palm Sunday (April 13th) at 8:30am or 10:45am for this lovely message with music. Please join us and invite others. Nancy Ohnstad, Music Coordinator

Good Friday Prayer Vigil
We will be joining together during the evening of Good Friday through Easter
Saturday morning to pray, to worship, and to intentionally be in the presence of
God. We will be hosting a prayer vigil from 8:00pm on Good Friday, April 18th
through 8:00am on Easter Saturday. The hope is to have people sign up to come
in for a half hour time slot in those twelve hours and come to the church to join
in prayer. We are also encouraging the high school youth to sign up to stay at the
church overnight to participate in this prayer vigil. There will times of worship,
prayer stations, silent prayer, lighting candles and others. Please think about
signing up for a time slot and high school youth please plan to join us for this
unique lock-in. Questions? Please talk to Pastor Liz or a member of the Youth
Team.
Yoga Small Group to Continue on
Monday Evenings in April Janene Papendick will continue to lead Yoga from 6:30 to 7:30 on Monday nights. She is skilled at leading yoga for people who are just beginning and those who have more experience by giving simpler and more complex options for each position. Janene has challenged us to grow spiritually by practicing four spiritual practices in our lives.
1. Sitting quietly and simply being aware or
listening for fifteen minutes. 2. Finding time to walk, bike, or be outdoors. 3. Writing a daily list of things that you are
grateful for. 4. Reflecting on what God is doing in your life
and then looking up and thanking God for those things. Examples may be ways that God is inspiring you, strengthening you, forgiving you and giving life a fresh start, empowering and calling you, loving you, including you, challenging you and more.
Stop in on a Monday evening. Wear comfortable clothes that you can stretch in and bring a mat that will make the floor more comfortable for you. We meet in the choir room.

Small Groups
Think about the things that you love, things that fascinate you. I love to get together with people who share those passions and interests. God has created a world full of life for us to experience. We find places for exploration and ways to express ourselves. There are arts, crafts, music, working in a shop, sports, recreations, and so much more. I enjoy things that are spiritual, physical, and intellectual. Don’t you as well? It’s a real pleasure to share what we love with others especially when they share similar interests.
I encourage you to lead a small group. Here’s how it works. Think of something that you’re interested in. Let the church office know and we will print up sign up sheets for a summer small group fair. If people have the time and interest they can sign up.
What if it’s not spiritual? Small groups can be on any topic but we encourage small groups to intentionally practice one of the faith practices and to talk with each other about how the faith practice is opening one’s heart to-ward God and how they are growing and learning. The faith practices are prayer, study, worship, invitation, encour-agement, serving and giving. So here is how it might work (for another example see the note on the Yoga small group below). Say your small group meets on a Saturday night for a pot luck dinner and a movie. The group can intentionally add a time of sharing of what is going on in life as a time to offer encouragement. The group may have a discussion about what concerns for church, community, and world are most pressing to them and intentional prayer can be planned around those real interests. If one is concerned about world peace there may be prayers that focus from peace in our homes and church to the armed conflicts in the world. This faith practice focus becomes a small part of what you do as a group.
So what ideas do you have for a small group? What would you join in order to grow? Here are a few possibilities. If any of these interest you call Pastor Tim in the church office.
1. Summer bird watching. We would gather to travel to birding hotspots around our community on one or two Saturdays a month. We could pack a picnic lunch as we went to places like Sand Lake, Waubay, or even wild-
life refuges in North Dakota. There are several great places to look for birds right in and around Aberdeen as well.
2. The Holy Land revealed. We would gather for a potluck meal and then watch and discuss videos by archaeologist Jodi Magness as she reports on interesting developments in archaeology in the Holy Land. These lectures were produced by The Teaching Company. You will have the opportunity to sample Jodi Magness in the adult class later in April.
What are your ideas? Cooking? Books? Bible Studies? Crafts? Sports? Music? Make an offer and let’s see what happens.
Request for Summer Housing
Jessica and Jasmin are from the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. They are in the Doctorate program in Physical Therapy and will be doing the first clinical rotations this summer and need housing from June 30 to August 22. They are in charge of finding their own housing for those dates that they’re in Aberdeen. So if you have an extra bed and an extra place perhaps at your table this could be a fun experience for you and them. They write that they are willing to help in any way including helping cook, pay rent, or being around as someone just to talk with. So here is a little about them: Jasmin: Graduated last year with a BS in exercise science from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. She grew up in Minnesota just north of the twin Cities. She attended a small Lutheran church in which she was very active in the youth group. She has a passion for dance, particularly ballet, as she did classical ballet as well as tap, jazz, and modern dance from age 4. In her spare time she enjoys reading, listening to music, and playing board games. Her clinical rotation in Aberdeen will be through Sanford. Jessica focused on philosophy and theology during her undergrad at the University of Mary. She grew up in Dickinson, ND and was active in her church and community. In her spare time he enjoys puzzles, board games and outside activities. She enjoys children and has worked with children in her church nursery and Sunday School. Her clinical rotation will be at Avera.
