Stumbling Upon Reconstruction LouFineberg/[email protected]

Ithadbeenonmymindforawhile,especiallyasIstartedtobecomeamoreactivememberofDorHadash.IhadabasicsenseaboutReconstructionist,butifpressedIwouldstruggletodescribeitanydetail,whichinspiredmetolearnmoreaboutit,especiallyifIwasgoingtoparticipatemorefully.

HavingrespectformyJewishheritageforyearsIkeptitatacomfortabledistanceaftermy“Conservative”upbringing.Curiousabouteasternreligions,Christianity,andnoreligionatallIfiguredIhadprettygoodsenseofJudaism,butwonderedwhatothertypesspiritualpathswereoutthere.I’veneverbeenreligiousordrawntofaith-basedcommunities,spiritualitytomeseemedtobeaverypersonalpath.OvertimeIlearnedthatJudaismwasfarricherandhadmoredepththanIcouldhaveimagined.Insomestrangewayifwewerebornintofaithlikewe’rebornintoourgenderIhadgrowncomfortableinmyownskinanddiscoveredtherewasnoreasontosearchanyfurther.So,whenJan,who’snotJewish,andIweremarriedfindingasynagoguewaseasy-theplacewhereshefeltmostcomfortableandwebothfeltmostwelcomedduringthehighholidays.

FormanyJews,thelaststrongconnectionwehavetotheJewishreligionistheHighHolidays,andmanyofusdonotexploreitanyfurther,butifthere’sanychanceincapturingourattentionasJewsandinspiringustolookfurtherintoourheritageRoshHashanahandYomKippurholdaspecialplace.

ThesetwoholidaysareagatewaybacktoJudaism.Theyaresoeffectiveintheirroleevenmanyselfdescribed“culturalJews”areabletoconnectwiththeirrootsatthistimeofyearina

waythat’snottooreligious.Theironyofcourseisthegravityofthesedayswhentakenseriously.

TheroleoftheHighHolidaysislikelydifferentthanitwasinthedayswhenbeingaJewwasnotsomuchofachoice.IntheJewishcommunitiesofthepastyouwerebornaJew,behavedasone,andtheonlyescapewasapostasy.TheconceptofparticipatingincommunalprayersoneortwotimesayearwouldprobablybesoforeigntoJewsfromjustseveralhundredyearsago.

HereinAmerica,wheretheconceptofthebuffethastakenonbroadermeaningandreachednewheights,religionandlifestyleparalleltheabundanceoffoodbyprovidingusreligiouschoicesthathaveneverbeenavailablebefore.TheHighHolidayswouldarguablybethePrimeRibandLobsterinthebuffetofAmericanJudaism.AswepickandchoosewhatpartsofbeingaJewappealstousandwhatpartsdon’tit’stoughtobeattheirappeal.Formany,it’stherealtestofwhetherornotwe’reholdingonatalltoourreligiousbackground.

Anotherimportantofferingonthebuffetisthe“kind”ofJewonechoosestobe,ifatall.WithoutrealizingitIchoseawhoppingportionofReconstructionandDorHadashbecausewithoutlookingverydeeplyintoit,bothseemedtopossessalotoftheingredientsmywifeandIliked.ThequestionIwascompelledtofigureoutwaswhetherornotitwasbycoincidencethatIendeduphere,oraretherefundamentalelementsoftheReconstructionismapproachtoJudaismthatattractedme?

ItseemsliketherewasonebookinmindwhenIposedmyquestionaboutlearningmoreaboutReconstructionisttoseveraldedicatedcongregants,ExploringJudaismwasunequivocallythebooktoread.It’salwayscomfortingwhenarecommendationarrivesunanimously.Forthosethatdon’tknowthetitleorhaven’treaditI’dliketorecommendittoyou.ThereasonyouhappentoenjoysomeDorHadashalongwithyourHighHolidaysjustmightmakealittlemoresense.Shanahtovah.

Anotherschoolyearisuponus.ItisgreattoseeeveryoneandgetourSchoolgoingagain.IammorethandelightedtoreportthatLisaRothstein(teaching5thgrade),SierraLautman(teaching3rd/4thgrade),andSharonSerbin(teaching1st/2ndgrade)arereturningthisyear.Theseteachersarethestrengthofourschool,whichwasmadecrystalclearduringthediscussionabouttheschoolthatoccurredoverthelastfewmonths.Thestudentsreallyliketheirclassesandlearnalotinthem.IwillbebackatmypostteachingtheMitzvahClass,thisyearitwillcombinethe6th&7thgrade.

IMPORTANT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTThe Board of Congregation Dor Hadash, after considering input from congregants (including school families), the Youth Education Committee, and the Ad Hoc Committee that was temporarily charged with exploring school possibilities, has determined that maintaining our current Religious School structure is the best option for us at this time. Therefore, we have no present plans to pursue a merger with the JJEP city-wide Hebrew School.

The Board also realizes that the merger of the school into the Congregation is a work-in-progress, and requires a better sense of communication and collaboration. The original Ad Hoc committee that was charged with developing the school/congregation merger recommended ongoing work to develop this kind of collaboration. This may best be accomplished through the creation of a new committee that pulls members from the Board, the Youth Education Committee, and the congregation at large.

Ushers for High Holy Days High Holy days will be here shortly. Many individuals arebusy preparing to participate in various ways. One of thewayseveryonecanhelpisto“usher”atoneoftheservices.Ushersserveasourinitialfacetothecommunity.Thetaskistogreetandwelcomeallwhocome,andtohelpthingsrunsmoothly.Itrequiresshowingup30minutesbeforeservicesare scheduled to start, and helping to close down whendone.Itisnicetohave2or3peopleforeachservice.Pleaseseeservicescheduleelsewhereinthis KOL for specifics on services dates and times.
