President’s ColumnFran Goldman

There are those that make things happen....there are those that wait for it to happen...there are those who watch it happen...We at TAS make things happen! A resounding yasher koach to the following individuals, whose personal commitments make TAS the viable shul it is: David Zimmer, Herb Levine, Mauricio Arenzon and Linda Cooper for successfully negotiating our Cantor’s new contract. As a result of the recommendation of the Executive Board, the Board of Directors has approved the contract. We, the congregants are the beneficiaries of hearing his beautiful voice, as the Cantor leads us in prayer, for an additional three years. Rabbi and Fran Adler for hosting our Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration, a flag waving, fun filled evening with Israeli folk singer Ron Dagan, the TAS choir and Bernie Morwitz back at the piano. The evening event culminated with sense-pleasing display of cookies, coffee and more than 300 happy, smiling faces...What an evening!! Paulette Ballin and the Anshei After Dark committee for a successful season finale. It was wonderful to see 400 people, after “the flight of the snowbirds,” enjoying the unforgettable performance of Andrea Garofolo. We look forward to AAD’s returning, the second Wednesday in November. Larry Feinberg, Our Life Long Learning Coordinator, for our Spring-Summer catalog. The program was created for our members, as well as the community, to bring us into the Temple, not only on Shabbos, but during the week. It’s up to each of us to take part in the many programs that are offered to our membership. Nora Gerson for continuing her Thursday morning, 9:00 AM ,yoga class. Nora keeps us, both men and women, limber, balanced and relaxed...if you haven’t tried the class...I urge you to come join us...guaranteed you’ll be a “steady” participant. Dr Gladys Morse for continuing Bridge lessons and Bridge play, Thursday afternoons at 1:00 PM. If you played years ago, come join the group. If you are a new player, come join the group. If you enjoy social bridge, come join the group. Fundraising Committee and VP, Gladys Morse, will debut the “Sunday Summer Season Series,” Sunday, June 4th at 2:00 PM. Don Stansfield’s baritone voice will take us down the road of three legendary performers. A program not be be missed! Check the carousel for information regarding all the series events. Please enter the dates on your calendar, get your tickets in the ticket office and have a summer of fun filled Sundays. To our members, thank you for your membership and your support. Thank you for working behind the scenes and helping to make Temple Anshei Shalom the best year round synagogue in Palm Beach County.“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”....Helen Keller

My coming of age memories of Israel were forged as a child, 50 years ago, when Israel defeated surrounding Arab countries in the 1967, “Six Day War.: Through my parents, grandparents and yeshiva community, we experienced an existential fear that the Jewish State would be destroyed, and that another Holocaust could occur, approximately two decades after the tragic events of the Shoah. Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador, and author of the book “Six Days of War,” offers important lessons regarding that momentous victory. I wish to share with you some of his insights he shared with me during the AIPAC policy conference. In May 1967, Israel was a country whose indefensible borders were only eight miles wide. Jerusalem was divided, Arab countries surrounded Israel on all sides, and they were vowing to drive every Jewish citizen into the sea. At that time, Israel had the friendship of the U.S., however, no strategic alliance existed. The armaments, Israel had at her disposal, were manufactured by the French, but on the eve of the war, France switched sides, and they supported the Arabs. Israel was, literally, completely alone. Fortunately, six days later a dramatic change took place. America woke up, and it recognized the presence of a “Mini Super Power,” in the Middle East, who succeeded in defeating all the, Soviet-backed, Arab armies. The successful conclusion of the war resulted in peace with Egypt and Jordan. It united Jerusalem, which allowed Israel’s holy places, to, once again, be placed in the hands of the Jewish people. It also infused a huge dose of Jewish pride throughout the world, including a giant boost to the beleaguered Jewish people of the Soviet Union. In addition, the victory gave Israel defensible borders. One incredible day was June 7th, 1967, at 9:00 AM. At that time the Israeli paratroopers had completed their encirclement of Jerusalem. They were on the Mount of Olives, waiting for orders to take control of the Kotel. At the same time, Prime Minister Levi Eshkol sent a letter to King Hussein of Jordan. The Prime Minister proposed the following: If King Hussein agreed to a cease fire, and engage in peace talks, the Israeli paratroopers would not enter the Old City. Here is a leader of the 1st Jewish state in 2,000 years, who was preparing to reunite his countrymen with their holiest religious sites, and he was willing to relinquish an historic opportunity,in favor of peace talks with an Arab leader. Imagine the depth of Israel’s commitment to peace.

SHALOM! The Sisterhood of Temple Anshei Shalom has just completed a very successful 2016-2017 season. According to the Sisterhood by-laws, the objectives of the Sisterhood are to strengthen the ideals of Judaism, to assist in social and educational activities that will benefit the Temple, and, to promote social and cultural relations among its members. We have succeeded in carrying out this mission! The entire Sisterhood Board has worked hard in making this happen - Please see my special “ thank you” column in this issue. We are beginning to work on our 2017-2018 season. Millie has a developed a schedule, which includes the overnight trip to Fort Myers and the Ringling Museum in July and the return of our Fashion Show with omelets and “bubbly”. There will also be tickets for a show at the Delray Playhouse. Sema has put together monthly programs, which include Rabbi Adler, Cantor Wood and Andy Greenberg, plus other suprises. Also, think ahead for those “Jewish gifts” you would like for the holidays. How about a Menorah for the holidays for your family - a Seder plate for next year - or a new kippah! If you do not see what you want in the gift shop - talk to Linda Kaplan - perhaps she can help you find it. If we do have it in the gift shop - buy from us and support the Sisterhood and the Temple! We will be open year round - Monday through Thursday from 9:30-11:30. We will open before some of our evening and Sunday events, so that you can browse before the show begins. For the upcoming year, I have also named a “Committee for Special Events,” they will plan a Hannukah event, Sisterhood Shabbat, Tu B’Shevat Seder and more! This will be in addition to all the wonderful events that the Sisterhood presents. Our Sisterhood Shabbat for 2018 will be on January 27th. If you are interested in learning a Torah portion for that day, talk to Steve Wallach, Marilyn Silberstein or myself. We look forward to seeing you at our programs and events - have a good summer!

SisterhoodJane Wechsler

Thank you to Rabbi and Fran Adler, Fran Goldman - President, and, Linda Cooper - Executive Vice-President, for all of their support.

A united Jerusalem should be viewed as an example to the world, because followers of various religions also have access to their respective religious sites. The Knesset is a two hour drive away from ISIS, a four hour drive from the civil war in Iraq, a three hour drive from the violence in Syria, and a 1½ hour drive from Hamas, in Gaza. Yet, Jewish members of Knesset, of every political persuasion, along with Christians, Muslims, and Druze, debate the hardest issues, with

Rabbi’s Column(continued from Page 1)

no one raising a hand or a weapon. This is the finest example of what the Middle East can be. Israel is confronted, daily, with more challenges than any other nation. Despite these circumstances, it has created a vibrant, democratic, inclusive, and dynamic country. Congratulations to our Jewish State on the golden anniversary of the June victory. Am Yisrael Chai

Shalom Chaverim, We had a wonderful Shavuoth, and now we are looking forward to a relaxing summer. With all our “Snow Birds” gone, for approximately six months, we can look forward to less traffic, shorter, or no lines,at the restaurants, and, possibly, menu prices that are more ”digestible.” Unfortunately, the lack of people has a negative effect on our minions, both morning and evening. With that in mind, I ask you to consider helping us by joining our minion, with some regularity, during our ”slow season.” After all, should you need a minion, you certainly would want your temple to provide one. We are starting to plan for the High Holy Days, and that includes the assignment of aliyote. If you haven’t received an Aliyah during the past few years, and you would like such an honor, please contact me, either through the temple office, or send me an e- mail at [email protected]. Speaking of Aliyote, anyone who would want an Aliyah,or who like to chant an Haftorah, please send me an e-mail at the above address. Please state whether you are a Cohane, a Levi,or a Yisroel. In conclusion, I wish you all a good and a healthy summer. I look forward to writing my articles, once again, for the September issue of the Kol.

Our wonderful gift shop is opened daily from 9 am to 12 pm for your shopping enjoyment.

As our neighborhood keeps growing and expanding, so too is TAS. We will continue our Lifelong Learning Program through mid-June, and a new Summer Sunday Series of events will also begin in June. Please check the carousel in our lobby for additional information. We will also be showing our weekly Wednesday movies, at 1:30 P.M. We certainly strive to be a source of “naches” for the residents in our community whose numbers keep growing because of our events, and our great Jewish values. Please pass the word around that there will be an Open House on August 27th at 10:00A.M. It will be a great time to meet Rabbi Adler, Cantor Beleniski, Choir Director,Cantor Bill Wood, and other members of our leadership committees. To all our “snowbirds,” have a healthy and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing you in the fall. Shalom!

We have completed another successful season, so for the present, we will say so long.... We wish you a very good and safe summer, wherever you may be; New York, Boston, Delray, Boynton or even West Bloomfield. On September 3, our Men’s Club will be joining the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs in attending a baseball game between the Marlins and the Phillies. Flyers are available on the carousel in the TAS lobby. Due to the HHD in late September, our first Men’s Club breakfast will be held on Sunday, October 22nd. We have a surprise speaker guaranteed to spark your interest. Mark the date and plan to be there.

Thank YousThank you. We appreciate so

very much the loving kindness our Temple Anshei Shalom

family has shared with us as we grieve the passing of Bill’s

beloved mother, Hannah B. Schwartz. We will always

remember the wonderful welcome she received from so many of you when she was able to visit the synagogue, the tender care she received

from Rabbi & Fran Adler, and the endless support you all extended to us as she began

the journey to her final days. Our congregation is truly

exceptional.

Jan and Bill Schwartz

Thank you for all the donations and well wishes in honor of our 56th wedding

husband, Herman, of blessed memory.

Marianna Gluck, Roberto & Suzy

Our 65th wedding anniversary was made all

the more special thanks to the good wishes and help from a bunch of wonderful friends

at TAS. Surprise visits from our children, accomplished

with the assistance of several “conspirators” (especially Fran and Linda), capped off a great weekend for us. The Kiddush

Krew was at its best! Everyone has our heartfelt appreciation

and thanks.

Grateful for Yom HasHoa ProGramaPril 24tH

Any event that is planned and completed is not, generally, the work of one or two individuals. Therefore, we want to thank you all, who participated in the planning of the program. By the way, we received many compliments. Again, for those of you who contributed your time, effort and energy, it is greatly appreciated. A tremendous “thank you” to: Rabbi R. Adler, Rabbi D. Crain, Rabbi L. Hering, Cantor B. Wood, Cantor M. Rubin, Cantor S. Rubinstein, President F. Goldman, Ed Gastfriend, Shelly Lazarus, Moric Jusvic, Irwin Schultz, David Rubin, Cara Rubin, S. Lopater and M. Silverman. Each of you made an important and meaningful contribution to the success of the commemoration. We are also very gratefu to those individuals who worked hard to make this

year’s Yom Hashoa program very special, and we wish to give them due recognition. To: Renee Gere for designing and preparing the program booklet for printing. To: Jan Schwartz for the wonderful publicity in the Jewish Journal we received. To: Marilyn Mishkin and Jannette Aubejean of the office staff. To: the maintenance staff for their help. This was truly a collaborative effort. Thanks, to the survivors who lit a memorial candle to never, never forget our loved ones. To those who helped us at the event, and to the audience for coming to help us commemorate our martyrs, and say, “Never, Never Again” because Mir zeinendo — We are here, FOREVER, Am Israel Chai!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

How Can I Provide for TAS’s Future? A TAS legacy does just that. Many members have expressed a desire to join the TAS Legacy Circle but are worried that it is too complicated or expensive. The answer is Not True. If you are eager to join the TAS Legacy Circle, but are not ready to change your will now, your existing retirement plans might offer any easy alternative. Making TAS an after death beneficiary of your retirement plan (IRA, 401K, etc.) is an excellent solution. Such a commitment is easily executed. Just contact your plan administrator and complete a simple form changing your beneficiaries to include a partial distribution to charity. A charitable beneficiary designation (TAS) through your retirement plan is truly a Win-Win! The decision to join the TAS Legacy Circle should be inspired by your desire to provide for our Shul’s future.
