Sometimes you never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory”....Dr.Seuss.... Change is inevitable. We used to celebrate the birthday of each President, now we celebrate President’s Day, which incorporates Abraham Lincoln and George Washington on one day. I believe everyone deserves his own day!! Some things change for the better. Here at Anshei Shalom, inside these walls are the rituals, programs, activities and celebrations that nurture our community. We are 37 years “young”, with a wonderful Life Long Learning Program, lecture series, Scholar in Residence weekend, movies, social activites, Anshei After Dark”, a Men’s Club and Sisterhood. In this past year, we have added 100 new members who, we hope will become active participants in our Synagogue life. New members bring a new outlook, new ideas and inject new vitality and thinking into TAS. Our “37th” Gala Journal Dinner will honor two very special people, Cantor Saul Rubinstein and Florence Ull. They, in their respective roles, contribute to making TAS so very unique. Cantor Rubinstein is our Cantor Shainee, and has stepped up every time he has been needed to conduct services and daven Shaharit on the High Holy Days. Florence Ull is our very special go to gal. Go to ...if you need to purchase a ticket for an event, go to ...if you want to join us for dinner, go to.... if you want chair seats for the holidays. Their devotion to our Temple is priceless. Please join us on March 5th to say Thank You for their tireless efforts. “To make a difference in someone’s life, you don’t have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful or perfect. You just have to care.”

Yes, Anshei Shalom should have an official fruit, and it is...Bokser! That word brings back a flood of childhood memories. When Tu BiShvat, the New Year for Trees, or the beginning of Spring in Israel arrived, so did that fruit known as carob or bokser. It seemed exotic to hold this unusual export from Israel, hardy enough to make a long ocean voyage and still remain “sort of edible.” The long, sticky, dark bokser pod may not have tasted like much, but that didn’t matter. Jewish farmers plucked them from a Jewish tree planted in the Jewish home land. So that carob was precious. Bokser, which features prominently in several mystical Rabbinic episodes, has a unique characteristic. In the Talmud, (Taanit 23a), we are told that the carob tree takes 70 years to bear fruit. Alas, the Anshei Shalom connection. You, who comprise our synagogue family, are walking, breathing bokser fruits. You participate in Jewish learning, volunteer, form new friendships, and, daily, choose to join our active congregation and make us a key element of your routine. All of you are bearing fruit at 70+ years, with a curiosity and zest for living, that makes our community so very special. To your neighbors who feel that it’s time to let the next generation step up and that shul affiliation and involvement are just dusty memories of life up north, there is a one word response...bokser! Your best days are now. Fruitful, verdant, and connected you demonstrate a passion that doesn’t exist among younger people. It is now spring time in Israel, but it is our springtime year round. So don’t break your teeth on a rock hard carob, instead remember that fruit took at least 70 years to come into being. Your experiences of a lifetime have brought you to us and I am glad you are here...my bokser congregation.Shana Tova

Shalom Chaverim. I owe you all an apology. The email address I listed in my last article was incorrect. Since I seldom use it I mixed up the numbers and whenever I checked for responses I got none. Let me try again. I would like to hear from everyone who wants an Aliyah on Shabbat. I need to know whether you are comfortable with reciting the blessings, reciting a Haftorah, Reading from the Torah, Davenning P’Sukei D’ Zimra, Carrying the Torah or opening and closing the Ark. I don’t care if you have done any of these before I would still like to hear from you. Please remember to give me your Hebrew Name including that of your parents, and the tribe you were born to, i.e. Kohane, Levite. Here is the real Email address: Zimmerdavid675@gmail.com. If you are more comfortable not using a computer you can put the same information on a card and bring it into the office. In February we are looking forward to Sisterhood Shabbat and the Scholar in residence Shabbat. Jack Rubin was a tireless leader in this annual protest against German insurance giant Alliance, A.G., which has refused to pay some $2.5 billion in claims for families' paid-for

Holocaust era insurance policies. Thousands of survivors live in poverty.

The protest puts a strong media spotlight on the injustice of survivors waiting for what is due, while Allianz basks in the national limelight of sponsoring a major golf tournament.

The number of survivors physically able to protest are dwindling fast.

If we who are able do not step up to speak for those who cannot,the protest might not happen this year. To paraphrase Rabbi Hillel:
