Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT:

Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ

From the District Office Staff: DS Se Hee Han, Sonya Lee, and Rosie Jacinto

The season of Advent always helps me to renew my faith and hope in Jesus Christ because of the Story of Je-

sus Christ tells us of the miracle and mystery of God wrapping up divine love, grace, truth and salvation hope

in Jesus. This story is accompanied with music and singing. Luke's narrative of the birth included the hymn

that Mary sang in joyful response to God's message that she was to give birth to the world's Savior. And of

course there was the angelic choir singing the good news to the shepherds on the night that Christ was born.

As I send my greetings to you, I was drawn to Dr. Thurman's words, especially "The quiet hopes that flood

the earnest cargo of my dreams." They encapsulate the meaning of Christmas, when God wrapped up divine

revelation, purpose, salvation, joy and hope in Jesus, born as a human child in a stable. He became a man,

worked in His father's carpenter shop, then went out to fulfill God's purpose, carried out a ministry that

touched those who would claim its power, performed miracles of love and offered hope to those in despair,

was crucified by principalities and political intrigue, but on the third day was raised to reveal God's eternal

possibilities of love.

His divine presence still comes to bless us as grace, to heal and help us, to guide and strengthen us, and to

send us in ministry, showing Him forth in our love for others with joy.

In this season of Advent, my wish is for a miracle for you and yours. I wish for you the discovery that comes

as we make our way with unnerving steps down that side street where a star stands over a manger - the dis-

covery that we have found our way home. I wish for you the love, the joy and the peace that comes when we

enter in, fall on our knees and welcome Christ's coming into our hearts.

In the season of Advent,

Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han

Hawaii District Superintendent

MESSAGES FROM THE DISTRICT & ASSOCIATE LAY LEADERS

We, the Hawaii District Lay Leader and Associate Lay Leaders, share in celebrating the birth of Our Savior this Christmas. Below are our reflections and message for all of you during this Sea-son of Wonderment and Joy: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In this season of Advent, I try to find ways to become a better disciple of Jesus. I remember that Jesus said “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35,NIV). Yes, I can love others so that it will be known that I am the disciple of Jesus. It sounds rather simple, but I realize that my love has to be big enough and good enough for others to see, as something coming from a disciple of Jesus. How do I do it? Throughout this year, I have been blessed to learn much about various mission activities that I can be a part of, at my church as well as at other churches in the district, and related institutions. There, I can find ways to love others. By praying, giving some financial help, and giving my time and skills for some of these activities, I will show my love to others. In the New Year, I will look around and find activities and people I have not been able to love yet, find ways to love them, and give my best love. Merry Christmas! Minja Choe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love to share my journey as a lay person in ministry especially in times as this. "As We Journey," may it lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are awaiting to be discov-ered. As I start to reflect on my journey as a lay person in ministry, we the laity are called to be the church of Jesus Christ. To be a relational and missionary church. Laity in ministry--by the inward dwelling of the Holy Spirit, the transformation of our mind, soul, and body empowers us to pick-up our cross and follow Christ. We become a new creature in Christ. We are transformed into the likeness of Christ. As caring, nurturing disciples of Christ the church become a relational church. Laity in ministry--we pick up our cross with an outward expression of the teaching of Jesus. Feed the hungry, drink for the thirsty, clothe the naked, invite a stranger, care for the sick, visit the prisoners. As loving, transformed disciples of Christ the church become a missional church. Laity in ministry--live a Christ-centered life. Stay focused, consenting with a pure, willing heart, embracing the Holy Spirit to take hold of our lives, inspiring the world as passionate followers of Jesus Christ. "Thank be to God!" "Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!" One in Christ, Francis Fukumoto ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Friends, let us continue to love others. Let us encourage one another in all that we do and say for God as Christian believers, as we journey together through the ministries of our local churches. Christmas is a joyous season for many people but a lonesome time for others. Let us be mindful of those who are “without” and who live in darkness. Let us shine Christ’s Light from within our hearts to light up our homes, our neighborhoods, our communities, our country, and the world. Be steadfast in your faith, be courageous and confident, be kind and generous, be compassion-ate and merciful. Celebrate Christ now and forever! Amen and Amen! Merry Christmas! Lynn Owan
