The voyage to the moon
La voyage de la lune directed by the french director Georges
Melies, is one of the
oldest science fiction films recorded . It is a compilation of
two books by Jules
Vernes Fromthe earth to the moon and H.G wells First men in the
moon. The
Silent black and white film , is an exciting adventure where we
follow a group ofscientist fight aliens and explore this unknown
world on the moon.

In 1902 the moon and its properties would have been very
fascinating and
Melies captured the mystery that surrounded the moon and takes
the audience
on a journey there , Reality is normally the last thing on
someones mind whenthey go to the theatre The Film Reel,(2011).
Melies addresses this by usingspecial effects and mixing old and
new cinematic techniques to create this
elaborate world on the moon. His work is described to make, Each
image justanother piece of magic that you cant figure out.The Film
Reel,(2011) This istransmitted through the film with the scenery on
the moon, in Image 1. The
image on the moon is still interesting but lacks its magical
appeal in the twenty
first century because we view this film as an elaborate
depiction of the moon,
because we actually know what the moon looks like, Its sci-fi
nature changes into
a fantasy film.
The overall feel of the movie pushes past the traditional stage
plays of the time ,
and opens up the world of special effects like aliens
disappearing into smoke and
beautifully drawn sets that transport us into another world .
The original reading
of the film has been lost in many ways as time has gone by,
because we dontview a journey to the moon as the director presented
it. Theres a new comical

reading that wasnt initially intended, knowledge of the world
has made this filmfunny. We now know that someone could not walk on
the moon in their ordinary
clothing, or parade around on the moon fighting aliens with out
some sort of
space suit on.
I enjoyed this short fourteen minute film, it was very fast
paced and had a greatwhimsical approach to cinematography. I think
for its time it was really
advanced Melies is said to have created some of the earliest
uses of Film
trickery The Film Reel,(2011), and although it does look

approach to
filming, because I still found it interesting because the spaces
in the film still
fascinates people. The depiction of the moon is interesting to
view through the
mind set of 1902.
