This Week’s Update Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It was an absolute pleasure to attend band camp last week. Thank you to
Yvonne Curran, Nicole Ng, Robin Beard and the band committee who
worked tirelessly to organise a great few days. It is a massive event that
required many volunteers to make it happen. Thank you to all the parents
who volunteered in various roles.
At Thornleigh West Public School we value the band program. Musical
education is so important and has many benefits to the developing brain.
Musical training helps develop language and reasoning: Students who
have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to
language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with
music, and songs can help imprint information on young minds.
Music builds imagination and intellectual curiosity: Introducing music in the early childhood years can help foster a positive attitude toward learning and curiosity. Artistic education develops the whole brain and develops a
child’s imagination.
The band camp concert was amazing! I sat closed my eyes and for a moment thought I was at a concert venue listening to a professional band –
just magic!

Health Care
Health, safety and wellbeing is paramount for our students. As a part of our annual review of health care plans we are required to update all information for allergic reactions and anaphylaxis. Identified students require an individual health care plan to support ascia plans for anaphylaxis and allergies, asthma plans, medical and other health needs. These health care plans provide detail and information necessary and required by the department to support student
health and wellbeing.
I have reviewed current plans and found many to be close to or already out of date. If necessary for your child, a health care plan will be sent home over the
coming week.
Could you please make a time to meet with your class teacher to update both the health care plan as soon as possible and the attached action plan if required, with your medical practitioner with all relevant information (in colour) for your child. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring safety and the wellbeing of students. Please call the school on 9484 4242, email or
communicate with your class teacher to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Please ensure contact names and phone numbers are included and accurate.
Knockout Cricket
Boys had an amazing first round victory defeating Hornsby North. Hornsby North batted first and after 25 overs scored 6/111. Our boys went into bat and reached their score by the 14th over with no wickets con-
ceived.
Got it – Week 4
Kind regards,
Julie Granville

Band News Band Camp was last week! Well done everyone for a successful, fun band camp. The
children have enjoyed two days of intensive rehearsals with our conductors David Bell and
Andrew Hamblin, as well as a guest conductor Abi McCunn, tutorials involving 8 tutors and a
1-hour band concert on Friday.
A band camp could not be possible without a parent taking up the role of Coordinator.
Yvonne Curren came to our rescue you this year and ran a well organised camp in her first
year as band camp coordinator.
Yvonne, please accept our BIG thank you!
Yvonne worked solely in the weeks prior and throughout camp organising all logistics. At
camp she was assisted by our teachers Mrs Kath Boon, Mrs Libby Crothers and our parent
helpers. Without the help of parents, band camp would simply not occur. Thank you:
Tina Faber, Nicole Ng, Vanessa Erickson, Jowita Lee, Paul Davies, Kirsty de Vallance, Liz
Jenkins (or Chris), Vicky Galanti, Patty Correll, Julie Tanger, Annette Mead, Meaghan
Tchepak, Celia Norton, Lyndall Harrison, Michelle Patmore, Caroline Dalziel, Claudine

Nicky Honeysett (Apologies if I have left anyone out)
Yvonne would especially like to thank the TWPS office staff and Mrs Mamo for their support
in organising this band camp.
An 8-minute slideshow of the band camp has been uploaded on YouTube for those
interested. Please turn up the volume to hear our wonderful Stage Band and Senior

FAIRIES, LOVERS AND MURDER MOST FOUL.
All students have now participated in a number of drama lessons. Centered around the story
'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' by Mark Twain, we have been focusing on mime and
physical theatre. Some students have expressed an interest in watching videos at home that
we watched in class. Here are the YouTube addresses.

New parents may be wondering about the magic bread tags. I use the tags as
encouragement points in drama class. Students also enjoy collecting them, at home and
bringing them in. I also love getting drawings and research items.
