This Week’s Update

It was with great pride that I admired the Opera House Concert Hall as our stage band waited patiently in the dressing room for their chance to shine. And shine they did! Last Wednesday evening, the Jacaranda Concert, the third in a series of four concerts as a part of the Festival of Instrumental Music, played host to our amazingly talented Stage Band and their conduc-tor Mr Dave Bell. The appreciative audience enjoyed the energetic and skilled performance which featured solos from Ruby, Catherine and Sean. Congratulations on a wonderful evening of music and a performance to treasure.

Congratulations Joseph! It is with awe and admiration that I congratulate Joseph K on his outstanding achievement last week as he represented Thornleigh West at the School Sports Australian Swimming Championships. As we have witnessed Joseph's amazing ability and talent for swimming grow from strength to strength, this year his achievement is incredible indeed. Joseph entered 11 events in the championships and received a medal place in each event. Joseph also broke a record in the 11 years 100m butterfly on the day. Everyone remember his name, one day we'll say I knew Joseph when he was in primary school. We are all tremendously proud of you Joseph and congratulate you for your outstanding achievements!

The P & C have registered our School Canteen to participate in the Sydney Markets “Eat Fresh & Win” Canteen Campaign. The aim of the campaign is to get kids eating more fresh fruit and vegetables. The campaign promotes fruits and vegetables and offers students the opportunity to win some great prizes.

From Wednesday 7 August 2019, all children who choose fresh fruit and vegetables in their lunch order or over the counter will be given one entry form with a sticker on it. Upon collecting two stickers, students return their completed entry form to the canteen and are rewarded with a minor prize – a Fresh for Kids scented stamper pen – there are 7 different designs to collect! During this campaign there will be additional options for children to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at recess and lunch over the counter. A new entry form will be given once two stickers have been collected.

Students can enter as many times as they wish! All entries are collected and returned to the markets for entry into the major competition. All entry forms need to be returned to the canteen by 13 September. For further info and inspirational fruit and veggie to create at home, visit www.freshforkids.com.au

Finally, a car park safety reminder.

Over the last week, worryingly, I have seen an increase in pedestrian use of the Giblett St car park. At all times of the day, but particularly early morning and home time, please do remember to use the main exit, running along the side of the canteen and avoid cutting through the car park to leave the school. I would like to think we have student safety in the forefront of our concerns and some students are being exposed to potentially very unsafe situations. Home time is a busy time of day, we have inter-school transport arriving, deliveries and teachers in and out of the car park. Thank you for your atten-tion to this area and promoting road and pedestrian safety with your families.

Kind regards

Julie Granville

Education Week 2019

Principals Address

Every student, every voice

I would like to acknowledge the Traditional owners of country, the Guringai people and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to any Aboriginal people present here today.

Welcome family, friends, visitors, teachers and students. Today we come together to celebrate a special day in our school calendar. A special day that puts a spotlight on our achievements, our aspirations and our determination to be ever striving for our dreams.

As a teacher and leader of Thornleigh West it is my absolute privilege to share with you a morning of excellence. I am very proud of each and every student of our great school. This being my 9th year at Thornleigh West, it is an opportunity to reflect on the growth, high expectations and achievements of our students. Not just achieve-ments at assemblies, or termly check ins, but the daily wins that come with perse-verance, a growth mindset and a culture and community that creates a supportive and nurturing learning environment.

At Thornleigh West our teachers are on the cutting edge of evidence-based research that supports cycles of continual reflection from students and teachers to acknowledge and identify current reality in classrooms, to develop strategies for our next steps and then take action to make those steps a reality.

The theme for education week 2019 is every student every voice.

At Thornleigh West Public School each and every student is known, valued and cared for. Each student is encouraged to be actively involved in their learning. To be deeply connected to their learning journey and a leader in peer and self-assessment. Student choice is embedded into integrated learning that fosters a sense of wonder, curiosity and the use of questioning to explore, expand and refine understandings. Students are challenged daily to stretch their imagination, think critically and deeply and make connections between learning, seeking to deepen understandings.

We know the changing landscape of education has increasingly complex demands. Students will be the problem solvers, change makers and active citizens of the future. We set students up to be life-long learners.

A real strength of Thornleigh West Public School is our connections beyond our school and how we look out to help us look within. Our Instructional Rounds network of John Purchase Public School, Oakhill Drive Public School, West Pennant Hills Public School and recently Normanhurst Public school, have, for the past 4 years built a strong, productive partnership with us to use self - reflection and data to inform future practice. During a ‘rounds’ visit, our guest teachers listen to students across the school, what are they saying, how do they know they are learning? How do they know where to next in their learning? What can they do if they get stuck? This process is one example of how we listen to students and how their feedback drives future directions, teaching and steps in learning.

This network has grown from strength to strength and every year challenges us to look at our goals for professional learning.

Our student focus groups, which each year gather student feedback on learning, go a long way to assist us to check in on how we are going as a school.

Student voice comes through our student leadership program, through SRC and senior leadership and sport opportunities.

Student voice helps keep us grounded, assuring teachers of the impact of teaching and learning.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the many areas of our school that contribute to make Thornleigh West the centre of excellence it is.

The incredible commitment of our office staff. The team that helps our school run so smoothly is led by Margaret Gordon and includes Deb Logan, Robyn Swartz and Deb Pollock. You are the face of our school, often the first point of contact for a new family moving to an area, a student requiring first aid from the playground or perhaps a parent with an enquiry. We thank you for the caring way you meet students and teachers’ needs every day. You know our school inside and out and make the connection between home and school such a reciprocally positive one.

To the executive and senior leadership team your commitment to excellence in education is second to none! Ms Allen stepping in to the Deputy role this term is a familiar face we welcome back to Thornleigh West. I would also like to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of our executive team Kath Boon, Nicole Dowd, Natalie Bourne, Nicole Binet and Robyn Batson who work tirelessly to ensure we are meeting student needs and have a relentless focus on our school vision. Your outstanding leadership is valued and truly makes a difference.

As a team we research best practice and considering our context, our students, implement best practice in learning, wellbeing, curriculum, assessment and report-ing all while creating and building something that can ’t be bought or downloaded ... relationships.

Teachers of Thornleigh West go above and beyond to deliver the best possible teaching and learning experiences for our students. Teachers collaborate towards aspirational expectations which mirror those of our community, and we see each other as partners in learning.

To our students, thank you for continuing to impress, challenge and inspire us to continue to create dynamic learning opportunities that engage and excite your love of learning.

Today we showcase our extra-curricular groups in particular the creative arts. We are proud to share the work of our 4 bands, 2 choirs, drama and dance groups. These groups are made of committed students that share a love of creativity and learning in the performing arts. Their teachers and conductors go the extra mile, starting with knowing their students and how they learn. They together develop skills and techniques that grow over time and with lots of practice to be of such an outstanding calibre that we will see today. Thankyou students and teachers for being such wonderful learning partners and sharing your passions with us today.

We welcome visitors and open our doors and classrooms as we offer a window in to learning across classes K-6.

And Next week we welcome our community back in to share our Science expo, where each and every student will have a sample of their learning over the last term on display. Stage 3 are currently creating their lego robotics projects to share with you. While all stages are linking science with integrated units and are looking forward to sharing their learning with you!

Although we would dearly love to have all students join us for our assembly today, we simply wouldn’t fit! So, as a way of having students here with us, we have made a movie with contributions from all classes, to bring their voices to us! I hope you enjoy our compilation of student thoughts on learning and their reflections on what it’s like to be a student at Thornleigh West.

Thank you for joining us today and sharing an important role in your child ’s learning journey.

Together we make a great team!

Deputy’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

It was such a lovely morning on Monday, seeing you sit side by side with your

children celebrating their learning together. What you got to experience for

such a short time is what we as teachers experience every day - which is

sharing the struggle and the joy of the learning process with your children.

Hats

As a whole school we are helping the children to practice safe sun

behaviours. The risk of skin cancer in our climate cannot be ignored, and as a

result, we are asking the children to wear their school hat in the morning ses-

sion before school starts, at recess and at lunchtime. Could you please sup-

port us in this endeavour by ensuring that your child has their hat at school or

in their bag every day. If they tell you they have lost it, can you assist them to

find it as quickly as possible so they don’t have to sit on the silver seats in the

shade at playtime. Also of assistance to us would be reminding them to have

it on their head when you kiss them goodbye in the morning. Even though the

sun is rarely hot at this time of the morning, it allows the children to get into a

good habit of remembering to wear their hat at all times when in the play-

ground and helps them to know that they do have it here at school. It may

seem like a small thing, but when these routines are established and

everyone follows them, it helps make the day go smoothly.

Ticks

We live in a beautiful area of Sydney - bushland, trees, birds and unfortunate-

ly little bugs called ticks. Ticks are quite common in this area so we would like

to remind you that at times it would be a good thing to check your child for

them, especially if they are complaining about being itchy. At school we are

not able to do the type of inspection that would be necessary to find the little

delights buried in interesting spots – like heads! Please refer to the Australian

Government website if you would like further information about ticks, what to

look for, and the required treatment.

Enjoy your week

Father’s Day Stall - Tuesday 27th August The Mother’s Day Father’s Day gift group will be holding their annual gift stall in the school hall from 9 AM to 3 PM. Each class accompanied by their teacher will visit the stall at a designated time and they will have 15 minutes to select and pay for their gift which will then be gift wrapped by our volunteers. The Father's Day stall website is now live and can be viewed at https://www.twpsmdfd.com/ The website features photographs, prices and information of the gifts available at the stall. We have also incorporated a gift wish list function. Please remember we have limited quantities of each gift so be sure to have a back up in mind particularly for the younger students. Don’t forget to bring the following on the day: • Money • Carry bag or plastic bag clearly marked with your child’s name on it • Wish list or shopping list Call out for volunteers These events cannot run successfully without the ongoing support of our wonderful TWPS families. A signup will be available later this week.
