The Warlord’s Kites Teaching Tips:

I hope you enjoy reading and exploring numbers with this fun book! The activities included for this story focus on area and perimeter measurements using grid paper. If you have older students,

however, you can include more challenging area and perimeter problems along with the story.

Act iv ity 1 : Design Your Own K ite For this activity, each child will need the student handout as well as a piece of graph paper. For young kids, be sure they draw shapes that include complete squares by drawing on the lines of the grid. This will keep their calculations simple. If you have older students, you might allow them to draw a more complex kite shape and then calculate the area and perimeter using fractions of squares or estimations. Then you can have students share their designs and what methods they used to calculate the total area/perimeter. If you’d like to display the final products, you might allow students to cut out the finished shape when they’re done. Then you can hang them around your classroom. Act iv ity 2: Match the Area This page allows kids to find the total area for various shapes. They then match the shapes that have an equal area. While this seems simple, I hope you will use it as a springboard for good math conversations. Challenge kids to describe why the shapes can be different but have the same area. Ask if they can describe how to change one shape so that it looks the same as the match. You might then want to give each child a piece of graph paper and see if they can draw their own examples of shapes that look different, but have equal area. You could also use this to learn about the commutative property of multiplication, comparing the area of a 4x6 rectangle to a 6x4 rectangle, for example. Act iv ity 3: Chuan’s Area & Perimeter Cha l lenge This open ended challenge will encourage kids to get creative and use what they’ve learned about area and perimeter. The goal is to find a shape that has a perimeter that is equal to it’s area. If your kids enjoy this and want more space to find lots of examples, you may give them extra pieces of graph paper so they can continue exploring. If kids are having trouble, you might want to encourage them to start with rectangles only. You might also challenge older kids to see who can find the largest example that fits in the given grid (a 12x12 grid) Act iv ity 4: Chuan’s U lt imate Area Cha l lenge Cards These fun visual task cards build on what kids have learned about area and challenge them to find the surface area of 3D shapes. This is a great extension for older kids or advanced learners. Ways to help support kids-let them build the shape with blocks or unifix cubes and count the squares. Or let kids color the sides as they count them. If you use these as a center, laminate the cards and include a dry erase marker.

Design Your Own Kite:

Using a piece of graph paper, you will design and decorate your own kite. Remember to be creative in your design!

Step 1: Draw the outline of the shape of your kite on your piece of graph paper. Make sure to trace on the graph l ines to keep straight lines for the outline.

Step 2: Color and decorate your kite!

Step 3: Per imeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Find the perimeter of your kite. (HINT: Count the squares along the outside of your kite.) Per imeter of my k ite : _____________________________ centimeters

Step 4: Area is the total amount of space a shape takes up. Find the area of your kite. (HINT: Count the total squares inside your kite shape.) Area of my k ite: ___________________________ square centimeters
