Curriculum Corner By Caty Van Housen, Curriculum Resource Coordinator

We continue to receive updates from the Florida Department of Education about our springtime standardized assessments, and want to keep our parents in the loop. One important development is that 5

th grade students will take the FSA Writing assessment with paper and

pencil, rather than on the computer. Our students are well on their way to being ready for this exam on the computer, but many schools throughout the state would not have had the infrastructure or instruction in place, as we do. So we appreciate the careful consideration the DOE gave this decision for all students. The writing test itself will shift this year from a one-sentence generic prompt to a specific task that requires students to read and analyze two-to-three pieces of text. The students will need to cite evidence from the texts to back up the claims they make. Our teachers are well-equipped to prepare our students for this increased rigor in reading, writing and test-taking stamina. In math, the news is that our teachers and students will actually be learning through two years of transition. This spring, our students will be assessed with the same test used last year in Utah. Our DOE is actually leasing the test for one year, while Florida psychometric experts design our own exam based on the new Florida Standards. That new assessment will be used in the spring of 2016. The testing windows have not changed, but we have yet to narrow down specific dates. For now, please keep these important dates in mind as you make plans for the New Year: March 2

Helping for the Holidays We would like to thank the families who generously donated to the Suzanne Schinsing, Realtor and PTO Helping for the Holidays campaign. The PTO raises money three times a year in order to bridge the gap in funding not otherwise available to our school. Helping for the Holidays, however, is an outreach program where 100% of the money raised is given back to our community. This year the PTO will be able to provide the funding necessary to support 40 of our own PVPV/Rawlings students who receive Blessing in a Backpack as well as continue to help Mayport military families who are in financial need. At the time of print, we have collected $4,794!! Although our official deadline has passed, we will still contribute every dollar collected in the name of Helping for the Holidays to Blessings in a Backpack and Mayport families. This outreach campaign is part of PVPV/Rawlings history and will continue for years to come. Please consider it in future years so as to help support those in our community who are in need.

Free Kids Meal Coupons Thank you to Chick-fil-A for providing free kids meal coupons to our students. These free coupons are part of Chick-fil-A's partnership with the PVPV Rawlings PTO.

Book Fair Wrapped Up The 2014 Fall Book Fair was once again an amazing success thanks to the support of Fishman Pediatric Dentistry, the parent volunteers (50+), teachers and staff, and all of the school families who made purchases at the Fair. All of our students had an opportunity to visit the Book Fair located on the Rawlings stage over the course of the 6-day event. Evening hours were also offered to accommodate varying parental schedules. Fishman Pediatric Dentistry provided reusable grocery-style bags that accompanied each Book Fair purchase. The funds raised will be used to enrich the reading and learning materials available at each Media Center and within each individual classroom of our school. Thank you for all of your support! And a very big thank you to our wonderful Book Fair team - Josie Welling, Jennifer York, Mandy Wright, Gretchen Peverly, and Bridget Neddo.

Food Fight—everybody wins!!! PVPV/Rawlings has a Service Learning

Program where students participate in monthly

service. During the month of November, food was

collected to restock the food pantry at Farm Share.

The students and families over-achieved with this

collection!

“All the success that we have had with the food

drive has made our students aware of kids out

there that don’t have enough food.” says R.J.

Redick, a 5th grader at PVPV/Rawlings

Elementary School.

The Student Council, led by Mrs. Tammy

Marshall, along with the two school counselors,

Stacey O’Brien and Vivian Pinner, coordinated

efforts that culminated in 1,984 pounds of food and

hygiene items that will support 1,600 families.

These were donated to Farm Share, formerly

known as Second Harvest Food Bank.

Principal Furness is committed to educating the

whole child using a strong Character Education

program. Teaching character to elementary school

children involves active participation in giving a

helping hand to the community.

Our students were leaders in this entire process.

The Student Council created posters for the halls,

announcements for the morning news show, and

they even participated in counting and loading the

food. This has been a wonderful learning

experience that will build compassion and the

importance of citizenship.

CAFETERIA NEWS! Food Service Manager, Linda Baker, 547-8576

Help us go paperless with our Food Service Program! Did you know there are apps to monitor your child’s lunch account as well as our daily lunch

menu which includes the nutritional values? Please visit our web page in the lunchroom section

and click on PayPAMS. After you enroll your child, this site will send messages by email when

your child is getting low in their lunch account and it will also allow you to review your child’s

purchases. If you want to apply money to your child’s account, there is a fee of $2.00. You can

also send your child’s lunch money in with him/her to be added to his/her account and still be

part of the PayPams program. When a student account is overdrawn by the cost of two lunches,

we are required to provide the student with a cheese sandwich and milk. Our manager, Linda

Baker, will do her best to call parents when accounts are overdrawn. However, we need your

help keeping your child’s account current. Parents, please contact Mrs. Baker if you do NOT want your child to

1) buy breakfast, 2) buy an extra entrée, 3) buy a cookie ($.35 on Friday)

Linda also needs to know, in advance, if any adult is buying a school lunch.
