These volumes, coextensive with Lingua vols. 14 and 15 (both 1965), contain the papers submitted to the Conference on Linguistic Problems of the Indo- Pacific Area held in London in 1965. Coverage ex- tends from Madagascar to Easter Island. A number of papers deal with the Sino-Tibetan of Southeast Asia; Munda and Mon-Khmer are represented, but Dravidian, as such, is not. A most impressive record of what must have been a most impressive gathering of experts. Useful indices.

Deals in par- ticular with Kasmirian authors and poets and their work. Particularly useful is Appendix I, contain- ing a list of minor poets of Ka4mlr and references to them in Subhasitasaxpgrahas. This publication, which started to appear in De- cember, 1963, contains in English summaries of articles and studies on indological subjects from 329 Journals which appear all over the world, in different European, Indian and Oriental languages. It also contains reviews of recently published books, titles of doctoral theses on Indian Universities and a list of research institutions. The summaries of articles and studies are presented in fifteen sections (archaeology; arts and crafts; epics and puranas; epigraphy and numismatics; geography; history; India and the world; law, polity and administra- tion; linguistic and grammar; literature and rhe- torics; miscellaneous; philosophy and religion- buddhist and non-buddhist; positive sciences; social and economic institutions; and Vedic studies). This is a most useful publication for all scholars dealing with indological subjects; it gives excellent infor- mation on recently published research works in all indological subjects. (L. S.)

Deals inter alia with the justification of war accord- ing to Indian philosophy, techniques of warfare, aggression versus self-defence, imperialism and colo- nialism, development of diplomacy, militarism versus pacifism, the idea of world-state, India's contribution to world peace. The study is based on Indian scripture, dharma- and arthahastras. It is a useful book which contains often unknown quotations dealing with ideology of war and peace in ancient India. (L. S.)

The Autobiography of Fukuzawa Yukichi. Translated by Eciaci KIYOOKA. Pp. xv + 407. New York: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1966. The present volume is a re-issue, under the auspices of UNESCO, of a 1960 publication by the Hokuseid6 Press. Pro- fessor Kiyooka's translation of his grandfather's autobiography had already undergone some slight revision since it was first published in 1934, but in 1960 it appeared with further revisions. Al- though it is described on the verso of the title page as a " new translation," there seem to be no major differences in the rendering of Fukuzawa's work. A number of small changes have been made in
