SEPTEMBER 1 | DEER ISLE Photographs by David Murray Weddings
Isaac + Josie
saac and Josie met in Portland while at-tending the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. They now live in Brooklyn, New York, but the pair’s ties to Maine are strong: Isaac grew up at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, where his father, Stuart Kestenbaum, is still director. The Deer Isle arts colony is something of another world, coated in moss and shaded with spruces and firs. The couple wanted their wedding to be visually integrated with the trees and natural wood setting. Decor aside, Isaac and Josie were especially attentive to their
vows, which they wrote together with the help of their friend and officiant. Guests were arranged in a semi-circle around the couple while they alternated verses, incorporating poetry and music. Dandelion Catering created an earthy, delicious menu featuring roasted pig with pasta and tomatoes, whiskey-spiked applesauce, and charred-carrot salad, among other tasty dishes. The band Sly-Chi played a mix of original music and covers in their distinct funk/soul style to keep the crowd dancing into the night.

Why…that caterer? Isaac and Josie wanted food that was creative, delicious, and original. Dandelion Catering understood their aes-thetic. “We could tell from their sample menus that Christine had a sophisticated, original take on classic comfort foods like fried chicken, pulled pork, and even applesauce!”
that stationery? The couple had friend and artist Eric Hou design their save-the-date, which featured anthropomorphized bears in their likeness. They handset their own letterpress and printed their stationery themselves at The Arm in Brooklyn.
that band? They opted for a band of talented professional musicians that would play original songs as well as covers instead of a more typical wedding band.
We love...the Cymbeline dress altered to look even more romantic and bohemian...the tasty, original
menu using local ingredients—even the pig was from a nearby farm!…the
incorporation of local goodies like Geary’s, Shipyard, Twenty 2 Vodka, 44 North coffee, and Orne’s candy, a from a Boothbay shop owned by
Isaac's aunt and uncle.
“WE DIDN’T HAVE WEDDING COLORS. WE JUST WANTED WHAT WAS IN SEASON AT BROADTURN FARM MINGLED WITH GREENS AND PINES TO INTEGRATE WITH THE TREES AND NATURAL WOOD OF THE SETTING AT HAYSTACK.”
