PRELUDE “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”
Bell Choir
LIGHTING OF THE FIRST ADVENT CANDLE
HOPE
Reader 1: O God, we light the first candle of Advent.
Reader 2: We kindle it with hope. We long for you to come to our world, to break through and
reign with compassion, justice, and peace.
Reader 3: The prophet Isaiah also cried to God to tear open heaven and come down. He called
God's people to do right. Isaiah called them to be refashioned like clay by God, the potter.
This Advent, we call out to God.
People: Mighty God, creator of the world, break through all that keeps us from you.
We ask for your mercy and reform us in your image. This Advent, visit us with your
justice, love, and peace.
All: Shine on us, O God of justice; guide our path through gloom of night; bear within us
wisdom's glory.
*HYMN #9 (verse 1) “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” VENI EMMANUEL
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Leader: We have all become like one who is unclean,
People: and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. Leader: We all fade like a leaf,
People: and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. (Silence)
Leader: Yet, O LORD, you are our Father;
People: we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. Leader: Do not be exceedingly angry, O LORD,
People: and do not remember iniquity forever.
*DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
*HYMN OF PRAISE #579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

Closser, also performed readings of the work many times. The story, featuring the well-known
characters of Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit and Ebenezer Scrooge, has become a Christmas classic.

Leader: Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are
enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth
People: before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh. Stir up your might,
and come to save us!
Leader: Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
People: O LORD God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your
people’s prayers? Leader: You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink
in full measure.
People: You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among
themselves. Leader: Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
People: But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you
made strong for yourself.
Leader: Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name.
People: Restore us, O LORD God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Leader: This is the word of the LORD.
People: Thanks be to God.
