First Reading: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14
God became very angry with the Israelites for worshiping a molten calf and making sacrifices to it. The people had so quickly violated his commandments that he planned to destroy them. But Moses pleaded with God for mercy and God relented.
Second Reading: 1 Timothy 1:12-17
Paul considered himself a former blasphemer and persecutor, and expressed his gratitude for the mercy Jesus showed him. Paul felt that he was a perfect example of Jesus' patience toward sinners and his desire to reconcile them with God.
Gospel: Luke 15:1-32
The Pharisees grew angry because of Jesus' compassion toward sinners. In response, Jesus tells of a son who squandered his inheritance, then returned to his father and asked to be treated as a hired hand. The father rejoiced, angering his older and more obedient son. The father explained that everything he owned belonged to his older son; but he had to rejoice for the son who was lost and had been found.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 11, 2016 “I am grateful to him who has strengthened me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me trustworthy in appointing me to the ministry…For that reason I was mercifully treated so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example, by those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life.” The jubilee Year of Mercy is quickly coming to its close. The word today is a clear reminder for us of God’s tender compassion and inexhaustible mercy. Luke 15 is referred to as the chapter of mercy relating the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son, opening the way for the forgiving Father. Paul’s gratitude for the mercy God has shown him, can be our prayer as well. Pope Francis constantly reminds us, that we who have known mercy are better able to extend mercy to others. Today, September 11
th can be a moment of mercy and forgiveness for all the hurts we have
experienced. Today can be a moment of gospel forgiveness to be offered to others.
