The Weilmoringle Word
Moree and a Mountain for School Leaders
ANZAC ASSEMBLY
Our students represented us proudly at our ANZAC Assembly
on Wednesday 26th April. Students laid wreaths to remember
those who fought for our country. They also read the Ode,
sang the National Anthem, learnt about some Aboriginal peo-
ple who represented Australia during wartime and reflected in
a minute’s silence. After the ceremony we all moved out to
the flag poles and watched as the flags were raised back up
from half mast. The students were very respectful and then
shared ANZAC biscuits and a cup of tea with our visitors.

Dates to Remember
When we went to the Leadership
camp we went to Moree. We went
to a conference so we stayed at a
caravan park where there were hot
springs pools. When we finished in
Moree we went to the national park
at the Warrumbungles. We went
bush walking and rock climbing. It
was scary. I had a little trouble going
up because I had to climb up the
rocks and it was really hard. We had
to make a movie and it was fun be-
cause we had an iPad. Then we had
to show our movie to the others and
they were pretty cool as well. We
had to sleep in a tent because it was
called a CAMP and that cool because
it was the first time I had ever slept
in a tent. It took us a while to pack
because we had stuff everywhere.
When we got home I was so happy
to be home because I missed my
home and family.

When we went to Moree the first night for dinner we had Domino’s Pizza. The second night we went to
the R.S.L. club and had dinner but the third night we went to Mr Duncan’s friends house. During the day
we went to the town pool. It was fun.
On Thursday we went to the Warrambungles but I didn’t like it because we had to sleep in tents not in
houses. I was very, very cold. When we went to Warrumbungles we had to walk up a big mountain but I
didn’t like it. We even had to do Yoga. I hated it. It was like we were in church and we had to put our
hands together like we were praying.

Aunty Zona was an original Freedom Rider
and kindly agreed to speak to us about the
Freedom Rides. She is here in the black and
white picture with Charlie Perkins and she is
pictured below with our school leaders.

On the cross country I came second and Addison came first and
Rebecca came third. When we finished we got a drink and we
were puffed and we were crying. We put cold water on our
heads and it was lovely.

On Tuesday, 23rd May we had our school cross country.
Thirteen students ran the race. The little children had to go
first. I did the race in 11 minutes and a lot of the families came
to cheer the runners on. All the children got an early mark
because we all finished the race.

On Tuesday was cross country Addison came first, Shaniece
came second, Rebecca came third, Nikylah came fourth and I
came fifth. Lots of adults came to the cross country to cheer us
on and my time was 21:44.

Six of us went to Brewarrina to represent our school at the
Regional Cross Country. I came third, Shaniece came 4th,
Addison came 3rd and we all get to go to the next level at
Geurie.

Cross Country Capers
It’s been a busy start to Term 2 with ANZAC Day, camp, NAPLAN and
cross country. Unfortunately we don’t yet have a permanent principal
as after careful consideration the panel has not recommended the
appointment of any applicant. The exciting news is that both Mr Dun-
can and myself will be staying for on until at least the end of the year.
Mr Duncan is working hard on plans for NAIDOC Week and we should
have a note home soon with all the details.
I’m so proud of how our school leaders made it to the top of Split Rock in the Warrumbungles. It is a very
challenging walk with a few places we needed to climb on all fours. I’m happy to admit I was tempted to
give up a few times and I was a lot more scared than I wanted to admit. I certainly needed to face my long
held fear of heights but I took a deep breath and kept going. I’m not sure that I would have had the same
persistence when I was in year 5 or 6! Since the camp the school leaders have been brainstorming ideas for
ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle. The overhaul of our school vegetable garden, addition of a com-
post bin and worm farm and the introduction of a hen house and chickens form the major part of their pro-
posal. They are currently making a movie about what they would like to do.
Your child has probably been asking for extra fruit and this is so we can have a fruit break each morning at
10:15. We were finding many of the children were losing concentration and complaining they were hungry
mid-morning. The short break during which the children share some fruit has seen an increase in produc-
tive work during the morning session. Please send a piece of fruit or some vegetables that can be eaten raw
to share. Popular choices are apples, carrots, snow peas, tomatoes, watermelon, oranges and mandarins.
All of the children are making gains in their learning and the teachers are currently working on reports
which will go home in Week 9. There will be an opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss your child’s
learning towards the end of the term.
Lastly I want to thank everyone for making both myself and Mr Duncan so welcome in the community. We
are looking forward to continuing to work closely with you and we encourage our students to Strive for
Success!
