Dear parents and caregivers, Socially acceptable behaviour on the school grounds We are so excited to have parents and caregivers engage in school activities and feel comfortable with being on the Fairfield West Public School grounds. At this time of year it is good to refresh the socially acceptable rules of being on Department of Education property. Language: Appropriate language must be used at all times, swearing and sensitive topics that could offend; are not acceptable. Interaction of staff and community: Courteous interaction is encouraged and expected at all times; duty of care is an obligation of all staff so please make an appointment to see a staff member for detailed conversations. Interaction/treatment with students: All issues must be dealt with by school staff; NO PERSON is to approach a student on school grounds. If there is an issue a teacher must be notified and will deal with it.
Student leaders It was a privilege at our Induction assembly to acknowledge the 2019 Captains, Councillors and SRC members. All of these students were selected through peer elections and are students who are, and will continue to be role models for other students, both in their learning and behaviour. Congratulations to all the 2019 student leaders! Library monitors Congratulations to our 25 newly appointed library monitors for 2019. These students will be giving up one lunch time a week throughout the year to ensure that the library looks great and runs smoothly, for all of us to enjoy and learn in. Premier’s Reading Challenge All students in K-2 will participate in the 2019 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) which is presented by the Department of Education. The challenge commenced on 4 March and aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. K-2 classroom teachers and selected support unit teachers will be reading the required number of PRC books to their students in class throughout terms 1, 2 and 3. Students in years 3 to 6, who would like to undertake the challenge will need to read the required number of PRC books throughout terms 1, 2 and 3 (see table below). All students who successfully complete the challenge will receive a PRC certificate in term 4.
The PRC runs until 30 August 2019. Ms De Horta will be explaining to all students how they can successfully complete the challenge and how to record their books read either online (Premiers’ Reading Challenge website) or using a Personal Reading Log, which will be provided to students in the library. Students who complete the Challenge for four years receive a gold certificate. More information can be found on the PRC Website: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

Healthy eating Students need to eat plenty of healthy food to fuel their bodies for learning. Please ensure your child comes to school each day with pieces of fruit or vegetables for fruit break, a healthy recess and lunch. This will ensure your child’s stomach is full so they can actively contribute to class activities. Remember to take advantage of our daily Breakfast Club which operates every morning from 8.30am-8.50am to ensure a good start to the day. Best Start- Feedback to parents All of the data collected during Best Start Assessment has now been collated and parents of Kindergarten children will be receiving a feedback report accompanying this newsletter. The report informs parents on what skills their child demonstrated during the assessment and gives information on what their child will be taught at school to help them progress. If you have any questions regarding the information on the report, please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s teacher. Upgrades to School Environment We are consistently looking at ways to improve and upgrade the school learning environment. Recent upgrades include: the building of two extra storerooms; painting of storeroom doors; two additional staff toilets; removal of trees; ongoing negotiations with synthetic grass; upgrading cricket nets; work on the Sensory Room for the Support Unit; negotiation of a new ramp so students can access the Support Unit; quotes for extension of safety mesh along corridors of Support Unit and quotes to replace equipment in play area.
Staff learning Not only do the students spend their days learning, but so do all the staff at FWPS. Over the past two weeks staff members have participated in the following professional learning opportunities:
Full day vocabulary learning – five teachers
Full day Diverse Learners Conference (Special Education) – two teachers
Language, Learning and Literacy – one early stage 1 teacher
Full day Beginning Teacher Learning– four teachers
Two full days Project Based Learning – Library Teacher
Six Day External Validation – principal and three executive
All staff professional learning ensures that the highest quality of education is provided to all students at FWPS.
I respect and acknowledge Aboriginal People as the traditional owners of the land on which I work, live and visit.
Have a great fortnight!

6E
Class Report
The students of 6E have come back ready and excited for their final year of primary
school. They have settled into their new class and routines and are thrilled for all the
exciting learning and activities this year will bring.
Students have kick started their learning by making their brains extra sweaty. They have
enjoyed working in groups and challenging their peers for explanations of their work.
The students of 6E are extremely grateful for the opportunity to take part in NRL Clinics
again this year. They enjoy being in the outdoors and learning about their bodies and
how important it is to stay active.
Student learning
6P It has been a very busy and productive start to the year for 6P. The students have settled in seamlessly to their
final year of primary school and are looking forward to tackling any challenges.
6P’s motto is ‘Work Hard, Dream Big’, where all students thrive to the best of their abilities. Students in 6P are
intrinsically motivated to learn and participate in a range of differentiated learning tasks that are catered to their
individual needs to ensure their academic goals are being met. The students engage and collaborate in a positive
hard-working environment to consistently achieve their personal best.
Last Tuesday, Fairfield West Public School had a visit from the Parramatta Eels’ star Mitchell Moses. He came to
our school to reinforce the importance of hydration, sleep and belonging in a young person’s life. 6P students
were really excited to see the NRL star himself, and were even more eager to participate in the talk by asking
many questions. Students from 6P learnt a lot from the talk, and as a result they are looking after their wellbeing
more!
At Fairfield West Public School, we are highly focused on wellbeing. One way to spread positivity within our
school is through expressing gratitude. Our school principal has thoughtfully purchased gratitude jars which have
been distributed amongst the school. Each day students have the opportunity to reflect on one thing they are
grateful for and share this with the class.

Fairfield West Swimming Carnival
On Tuesday 19 February, students from FWPS attended Prairievale Leisure centre to take part in the annual swimming carnival. 19 students competed in events with students from St Johns Park, Harrington St, Horsley Park and Bonnyrigg public schools. The weather was great for swimming and the students who swam did their best and enjoyed their time in the water. Big thanks go to the teachers from FWPS for their involvement in helping to run the carnival with their fellow colleagues from the other schools, as well as the parents and family members who attended and supported the students. A team of 8 students attended the Horsley Zone carnival on Wednesday 6 March. Details of which will be posted in our next newsletter. Mr Ottmann Sport Co-ordinator

Help Needed for a Community Garden
There is a garden next to the Community Cottage that was used in the past by the gardening club as a vegetable garden. It is the perfect space for a community garden to be established. If you would like to participate in the garden, please see Ms Funnell or call the office on 9604 5568 to speak to her.
