Dorset Probation Service Community

Payback give the Skate Park in West

Moors a new look.

Dorset Police and Dorset Probation

Service were at the skate park in West

Moors on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17

January 2012 giving it a new lease of life.

The skate ramps were covered heavily in

graffiti, and the BMX track itself was

unusable due to the grass and weeds

overgrowing.

With this area looking as it did, West

Moors had seen an increase in litter

around the park, anti social behaviour,

criminal damage to scooters and bikes,

and bullying with young people not

wanting to use the area.

Police Community Support Officer Steve

Winning liaised with The Parish Council

who arranged to have Community

Payback attend and clean up the park.

Community payback have given the skate

ramps a fresh coat of paint, cleared the

BMX track of shrubs and weeds and cut

the grass to make this facility useable

once again.

Community Payback is responsible for the

delivery of unpaid work across the whole

of Dorset, by offenders sentenced to

between 40 and 300 hours by the Courts.

Offenders must work an average of 7

hours per day, for one day per week.

Dorset Probation Trust has an excellent

track record of Community Payback

working in partnership with organisations

and people within the Dorset community,

to ensure that the work undertaken by

offenders makes significant benefit to the

people of Dorset.

Police Community Support Officer Steve

Winning spoke with members of the

public using the area after the work was

completed and they said:

“It was nice to see the graffiti gone and

we can use the BMX track. We hope it

stays this way.”

He also spoke with some of the dog

walkers who walk nearby and they said,

“It freshens up the area, its lovely”

With early warm weather followed by a

really cold snap there’s been some

stunning sights for bird watchers at

Moors Valley Country Park and Forest

near Ringwood, recently.

It’s usually possible to see between 35 –

40 species on a typical walk around the

Park, and the warm temperatures

experienced earlier in the year have

meant that many of them are already in

their bright spring plumage looking very

striking against the stark frosted scenery.

Several bullfinches (Pyrrhula pyrrhula)

have been spotted at Moors Valley this

year. One of the most attractive native

finches, it is only recently that their

conservation status has been reduced

from red to amber. Bullfinch numbers had

been in serious decline, thought to have

been caused by a reduction in woodland

areas, so it is good to know they are on

the increase at the Park.

Gadwalls (Anas strepera) have also

increased in number at Moors Valley.

Another bird with an amber conservation

status, this grey-coloured dabbling duck is

a little smaller than a mallard, and nests

in low numbers in the UK. At Moors

Valley numbers have increased to 50 or

60 on the lake over the last two winters.

Whilst bullfinches and gadwalls are

potentially easy to see it can be harder to

spot some of Moors Valley’s other

residents. Hobby hawks (Falco subbuteo)

normally arrive it this country in late April.

They are very fast in the air, catching and

eating dragonflies in flight. With a choice

of 26 types of of dragonfly and damselfly

on their menu at the Park it is perhaps

not surprising that they have bred in the

Forest. Another more unusual sighting is

the Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus). It

is common between May and August

although you are more likely to hear the

churring calls of these noctural birds than

spot their well-camouflaged foliage.

With nestcams to enable visitors to watch

chicks grow and fly, and a selection of

bird related events and activit ies

including nest box building and dawn

chorus walks, there is real enthusiasm for

all things ornithological at Moors Valley

and visitors are encouraged to report any

sightings. These are then all recorded by

the Rangers who send monthly reports to

the British Trust for Ornithology which

also rings the Park’s cygnets each year,

allowing the Rangers to follow their

progress long after they have left the

lake.

Monday mornings with a demonstration given by a professional artist on

the second Monday of each month.

I am writing to you to introduce the West

Moors Youth Football Club. We are a local,

well established, community based (not for

profit) organisation working to provide local

children with the opportunity to play

football and receive training.

All child members of our club receive

weekly football coaching sessions and the

play regularly in local league matches. At a

time of great financial hardship for many

families we are delighted to let you know

that the average annual cost for a child to

enjoy full membership of our club is only

£125., which amounts to just over £2 per

week. We feel that this offers fantastic

value for money and provides a real

opportunity for local children to enjoy

exercise and friendship in a great family

club environment.

We have opportunities for all school year

groups from Year 1 to Year 5 inclusive.

We have been established for 37 years.

We continue to offer ‘library gets lively’

month from 3pm–3.45pm for preschool

children. Sessions include rhymes, stories

and craft activities. Do come along and have

A reminder to you that there are several

different ‘surgeries’ at the library. On the

first Saturday of the month you can come

and speak to a district or county councillor.

Chris Chope – local MP visits the library at

various dates throughout the year – the next

time he is available is 21st April and

appointments can be made to see him. The

local Police Officers are also available to chat

to the public at various times throughout

the year – see posters for details.

We do try to offer different events to you –

this month we are very lucky to have

Graham Hurley (best-selling crime novelist)

visiting the library on March 15th. You may

remember that he spoke at the public

meeting last year as an advocate for the

library to be retained. His new novel is

published this month and he has agreed to

give a talk on his way back from a publicity

event in Portsmouth. Just before Christmas

we were able to invite Carol Rivers a local

best-selling author of family stories to the

library – this event was well attended – so

thanks to all.

If you don’t yet belong to the library,

membership is free – we don’t just offer

books to borrow – come in and take a look.

In my article last month I made a

whopping howler. Oh dear me! Several

people have wagged their fingers at me

because I spoke of the old farthing coin

as having a robin on it! – and of course,

it was a wren! So sorry!!! I really did

know better.

But thinking about Robin Redbreast and

Jenny Wren made me ponder on the

way we used to give lovely affectionate

names to our birds and animals. It’s a

pity we don’t use them still.

The redbreast was given the name

Robin, and this has become the

standard name for him – but rather

sad ly , ‘ Jenn y’ has b een a lmost

forgotten. The wren’s preposterous

scientific name, Troglodytes troglodytes

was foisted on it because of its habit of

getting into little holes: and this name is

derived from the two Greek words

trogle, a hole, and dyein, to get into.

Jack Daw has had his two names linked

together to produce the standard

dictionary word for him: ‘jackdaw’. And

the same has happened to the magpie,

for the ‘mag’ part of this was formerly a

girl’s name – a shortened form of

‘Margaret’.

Yet another first name which survives is

Tom tit – and the word ‘tit’ is of Norse

origin, meaning ‘small’, as in ‘titmouse’

and also our word ‘titbit’ Rather

amusingly, the Americans prefer to spell

this as ‘tidbit’ as a result of their

absurdly misplaced prudery (no, don’t

ask me to explain!).

The martin really is Martin – a first

name being used as a common noun.

No one quite knows why this is, but

some have guessed that it’s because

these birds fly south around the time of

Martinmas (11th November) and re-

appear in March (the month of Mars).

Of course some birds have names which

are picturesquely self-evident: the

wagtail, the flycatcher, the sparrow-

hawk, the warbler, the tree-creeper, the

waxwing (which has small appendages

on its wings, resembling red sealing-

wax), the chaffinch (which searches for

food among chaff), the woodpecker,

and the nightjar (which makes a curious

‘jarring’ or whirring noise at night).

In fact, the nightjar has seized

countryfolks’ imaginations to such an

extent that it has been given a host of

other names: ‘night-churr’, ‘eve-churr’,

‘eve-jar’, ‘churnjar’, and ‘jar-owl’. Even

its odd scientific name, Caprimulgus

europaeus, reminds us of the weird old

medieval belief that it actually sucks the

udders of goats! (from the Latin words

capra, goat, and mulgere, to milk.

Nightjars, being nocturnal and noisy,

have attracted strange folklore tales too

– not only that they suck goats, but also

that they are witches in disguise and can

be shot only by a silver sixpence; and

there was a Yorkshire superstition that

they are the souls of unbaptised

children, doomed to fly perpetually in

the air.

Nightjars are now so rare that in 2006

twenty thousand new homes which had

been planned to be built across 300

square miles of south east of England,

were put on hold because the area was

the home of the nightjar, the woodlark,

and the Dartford warbler. As a result of

this ban, developers claimed to have

lost millions of pounds and at least forty

jobs had to be cut! Birds are important!

But to return to the robin, a charming

old legend tells how he gained his red

breast when he tried to pull a prickle

out of the Crown of Thorns as Jesus

hung on the cross. And as for little Jenny

Wren, she was always believed to be

Robin Redbreast’s wife!

An extremely widespread old rhyme put

it thus:

The robin and the wren

Are God Almighty’s cock and hen.
