News from our District Nurse

Stay Healthy!

Everyday Preventive Actions:

• If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you (or your child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.

• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. After using a tissue, throw it in the trash and wash your hands.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs that can cause illnesses.

The West Side View

Dear West Middle School Families,

November is always filled with activities that keep us all very busy which is why December always seems to sneak up on us, and yet

here we are, December has arrived! Before jumping into this month’s article, I want to thank all of our parents, families and teachers

who participated in our annual Parent Teacher Conferences. Mother Nature certainly did not make our Fall Parent Teacher

Conferences easy this year, who knew we would have a snow day on November 12th? However, thanks to each of you and to each

of our teacher’s dedication, flexibility and creative scheduling, this year’s Parent Teacher was a success with close to 58% of our

parents attending conferences. Academic achievement is directly linked to how involved parents are in their children ’s education.

Together, we work to bring out the best in our children and I want to again thank you for your continued support!

During the long winter months ahead, students often begin to get what is commonly referred to as “cabin fever.” This is not just a

middle school phenomenon, it can be widespread. So, as we enter the holiday season and the long winter months, I thought I would

ask that you take some time after reading this to talk to your children about what kindness, empathy, humility, self-control, hope and

perseverance mean to you as an adult and a parent. These are a few of the character strengths we’ll focus on in the coming winter

months as a part of our Positivity Project. I would also ask that you take this a step further and ask your children what these words

mean to them and, finally, what your expectations of your children are with regard to these life skills / character strengths.

Throughout the rest of the year, please re-visit the character strengths of our Positivity Project with your children so we can work

together to build an environment where all of these strengths are more than just terms, but are a natural part of our school,

community, and what we are known for as a school community. With your help as parents, we can make this a reality and preserve

this environment for many years to come.

Finally, as December is now upon us, our FISH drive is currently under way. Band, Choir, and Orchestra concerts are planned, and

our students have gone to Band Solo and Ensemble. Winter Recess will begin at the end of the day on Friday December 20, 2019.

In the rush of this season, I would like to close by drawing your attention to the mission of The Positivity Project, something we have

embraced for the past two years. The mission of the Positivity Project is “to empower America’s youth to build strong relation-

ships, and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in all of us.” At this time of year there are many opportu-

nities to celebrate cultural and religious diversity through the observations of Ramadan, Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa.

These holidays and observances enrich our lives, sustain cultural and religious traditions, and strengthen family ties by providing

rich opportunities to pause the fast pace of everyday life and take stock in the things we have to be thankful for. From all of us at

Grand Blanc West Middle School to all of you, Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Jeffrey M. Neall, Principal
