A newcomer to the Barony of
Thor's Mountain proved his
mettle by claiming the title of
Rapier Warlord during a Feb.
24 tournament.
Scipio DaVigo collected a team
of the Barony's finest rapier
fighters during the round-robin
snowball phase of the tourna-
ment. Each time additional fight-
ers were defeated, they became
a member of his team.
Scipio's team faced a unit com-
manded by fellow newcomer An-
gus Lucinius in the finals of the
tournament. Angus served as Scip-
io's mundane fencing coach and
mentor for some years.
After hard-fought battles, Scipio

Saint Jerome Baron Oleathainn MacLa-
omuin, CL, provided this ink
rendering of Saint Jerome,
which Oleathainn drew in
1986 after a wood engraving
by Jost Amman (1539-1591),
published in 1599 after Am-
man’s death.
Saint Jerome is the patron
saint of scholars.
Oleathainn said of Amman:
“One of his pupils is said to
have commented that the
drawings he made during a
period of four years would
have filled a hay wagon.
“There are a large number of
his original drawings extant,
housed in the Berlin print
room.
“Over 1,500 prints are at-
tributed to him. He was one of
the last major producers of
woodcuts for books, and I am
privileged to own one of wood
engravings. “

Peers who spoke all have spe-
cial significance for her. Many
have been her friends and men-
tors for two decades.
Of Clanne Preachain, she said,
“This group is filled with some
of the most amazing and talent-
ed people I know, and I am
honored to be part of the
Preachain family.”
Countess Calleach joined the
SCA in the early 1990s. In high
school and college, she volun-
teered with the Tennessee
Renaissance Festival in Franklin,
Tenn.
“That started my interest in all
things medieval,” she said.
She met her husband, known as
Sir Dragolen das Kriegerkind in
the SCA, while attending Mid-
dle Tennessee State University,
along with other members of
the Bastarnae, a fighting
household.
“They invited me to Border
Raids in June of 1993 and I
loved it. I have been involved
ever since,” she said.
Countess Calleach is mun-
danely known as Kathy
Aslinger. She is an attorney
with the law firm Kennerly
Montgomery in Knoxville.

that. Being honorably bested on the field by my own
blood, as it were, was truly a moment of gratifying edifica-
tion. The fittest took the day with humility and gracious-
ness that speaks well of him, and reflects well on me as his
mentor.”

Gentles enjoy SCA Day in Jefferson County

The first Jefferson County/Eastern Thor's
Mountain Arts and Sciences and martial
gathering on March 16 proved successful.
Lady Castlellana de Luna deserves praise
for organizing a fun and informative day
of fellowship. Twenty gentles attended.
There was merriment and discussion
amongst our eastern brethren of making
such occasions a regular occurrence.
Her Excellency Baroness Maria de Anda-
lusia, who attended the gathering, praised
the experience: “Classes were very well
received,” she said. “Subjects taught were researched and
presented in easily comprehensible and in a hands-on
manner. With lots of question and answer time, exactly
how I like to learn.”
Classes included Roman des-
serts, how to build a Zeus
power box , basic Italian rapi-
er, embroidery, and horses.
There was also rapier fighting.
“Several people taught a varie-
ty of subjects, relating to our
society and individual areas of
study,” Her Excellency Maria
said. “I would definitely attend
more events like these be-
cause I personally like the
informal and hands-on method
of teaching.”

scavenger hunt.
Gentle Josselin Amboise and Lord Donovan Talbot
received Ram’s Horns for Service.
Court was followed by the Fashion Show, which was
won by Lord Ulrich Eisenhand. After feast, the Liars
Club competition was won by Lady Etain ingen Ui
Conchobhair.
The Court of Her Excellency Baroness Godelind of
Windemere opened at Black Gryphon.
The Honorable Lord Ronan MacMorton and Lady
Amya von Dornberg, the Black Gryphon autocrats,
were called into the presence. The announced the
winners of the event’s contests: Lord Ulrich Eisenhand

event or gathering? Email your Joelisms to
Mundane name: Meg Harrison
SCA name: Lady Klara bint Da'ud al-sayrajani
What period is your persona?
Late 15th century Ottoman.
Why did you choose that period?
Klara is actually my fourth persona
(I've also been early Celtic, 16th Cen-
tury Portguese in India, and 16th
Century German), and she came
about through an odd set of circum-
stances. I'd gotten bored with my
16th century German persona and
the hard-to-move-and-work-in garb
that came with her. We were still
living in Atlantia at the time, and upon
hearing that I was thinking of changing
my persona again, the Baroness of
Sacred Stone jokingly said that I was-
n't allowed to change my name again.
My German persona's name was
Clara. So, I went on a hunt for a persona with easi-
er-to-work-in garb who wouldn't have too drastic a
name change. I found the name Klara and followed
my way down that rabbit hole into researching
Jews in the Ottoman Empire. And from there found
a new persona (with easy and awesome garb) and a
new obsession to research.
What brought you to the SCA?
My parents. We started attending events when I
was 4. I think my first event was Black Gryphon in
1986.
What activi t ies do you enjoy?
Cooking, research, theater, and helping out. Seri-
ously, if you see me unoccupied at an event please
tell me how I can help because I guarantee you that
I'm bored out of my skull. I don't do “relax” well.
What can you tell us about your life outside
t h e S C A ?
I'm married to Fergus Fletcher
(MKA Jessie Harrison) and we
have a 4-year-old son, Sion. We
moved back to the area to be
closer to family, including my
mom and stepdad who most of
you know better as Gellis and
Guillaume. I'm the assistant direc-
tor for the public library system in
Hamblen County.
What is your most embar-
rassing moment?
There are so many that it's hard
to pick! Probably my most embar-
rassing SCA-related moment hap-
pened shortly after I made my first
piece of garb on my own. I was so proud of myself.
I'd gotten one of those little hand held sewing ma-
chines (that really don't work worth a darn), a hor-
ribly historically inaccurate pattern (as I know
now), and some truly horrid fabric. I was so proud
of myself for figuring out how to work the pattern
and the horrible little machine. Then, walking
across the field, I felt the seams of the pants begin-
ning to unravel. Fortunately, I was literally able to
hold myself together until I could bum some garb
to finish the day out in. This set some sort of prec-
edent though, as I actually seem to have some sort
of garb curse in place. It never fails that something
will rip, a piece of garb I meant to pack won't make
it, or I'll spill an entire vat of olive oil on myself at
an event.
