The streets of New Zealand are very clean and in Brazil there is much litter. Here the climate is cool and in Brazil the weather is very hot. The people here are very polite. The people in Brazil are not so polite.

In the beginning I had a host brother, but he went back to Germany. Now I have another host brother from Vietnam. My host parents are very friendly and thoughtful. They like to read and go out. I didn’t like to read before, but now I like it because they always say to me “Read a book”. They help me so much to improve my English. I think they are the best host family I could have.

I want to stay here, but I don’t have money to pay for everything. Someday, hopefully, I will be back. I made new friendships, I have a new family and this I’ll never forget because they supported me when I needed it. I’ll miss everything – friends, teachers, family, places, food, culture – everything, because I love New Zealand and now it’s my new country. It’s what I call home.

I had the best moments of my life in New Zealand. I don’t have words to explain how this has changed my life. I’m feeling independent and now I know what is best for me. This really changed my choices.

Luiza

I really loved my host mother. She likes the same things that I do and listens to the same songs that I do. I identified myself with her, a friendly, kind and cheerful person. When I came here she took me to visit Napier, I was sure I was in the right place.

In Brazil we don’t have public schools like here in New Zealand. Here it’s like a dream. I never imagined I could study in a school like this. Before coming to NZ I was looking for information about the school. It was exciting, but not as much as being here and studying here.

Angela

I only have good things to say. Colenso people are amazing. The way you treat Maori culture and respect it made me think about our own native people who do not have the respect they deserve. New Zealand is a country to be proud of and certainly we Brazilians will show the best side of this wonderful country and try to make people respect our native people the way you treat yours. Congratulations New Zealand, congratulations Colenso. I’ll miss this so much and hopefully I’ll be back soon. This certainly isn’t a goodbye, but a ‘see you soon’.

Monara

I’m sure that I’ll never forget anything that happened in New Zealand. I will miss everything. I just love New Zealand, my host family, the school. That was the best experience of my life.

Amanda Goulart Country: Brazil Age: 18 years old Arrive: February 2014 Departure: December 2014

I really loved my time here in New Zealand. I am so happy that I chose here to spend one year. And during this year I had so many experiences, like learn about a totally different and interesting culture, travel around the country, see many beautiful places, meet a lot of friendly people from different parts of the world and study in William Colenso College. I will never forget the moments that I had here, especially the ones at school, on some trips, with my host family and with my friends. I hope to keep in touch with all of them and see them in the future, because after this long time together we really feel like a real family.

I am really glad that I could do this experience, of traveling alone to the other side of the world, to a country with a different language, different culture, different life style, where there is no one you know, to go to school and start a new life there. So if you could do something like that, you should, because you will feel really good, the same way I feel right now.
