Wileyan Wisdom

For the last two weeks, I have been searching for buried treasure. No, I have not been digging for pirate’s gold; nor have I been using a treasure map marked with a X. I have been going through boxes in our garage.

As I know many of you have experienced, we have accumulated boxes of stuff that no longer have relevance. Some things we are not sure why we ever thought they were important. We have been throwing lots of stuff away.

But I did find a few treasures: a restaurant gift card for a hundred bucks, a Celtic Cross made from jade, my first sermon in front of a congregation (yes, it was as terrible as you imagine it to be), some photos of my mom’s brothers and sisters, and Jan’s grandmother’s collection of Anne of Green Gables books.

Of course, we don’t keep things because they have real material value (though the gift card will be fun to spend). We keep things because there is either a story connected to the item, or because it belonged to a person we cared about, or the item somehow defined us at some point in time. We hold onto things as a way for us to hold onto meaning, identity, history.

Jesus talks about treasure. He talks about the Kingdom of Heaven being like buried treasure. Once you find it, you sell all you have to acquire it. He also talks about storing your treasure in Heaven, where it cannot rust or ever be taken away, and that our heart and our treasure cannot be separated.

I have treasured my time with you. Part of my heart will always be here. I will, of course, be taking mementos of Claremont United Methodist Church with me. I will always have stories to tell about our time together. We have, after all, cried together, laughed well and often, done impossible things, and added layers of meaning to what was already a great history.

Claremont United Methodist Church will always be the church of nativity scenes and water slides, hula-hoops and candlelight vigils, rainbowed altars and malaria nets, bank leases and moringa trees, pizza and confirmation classes, jazz trios and moments with children, 4th of July booths and Aaima dancing in the aisles. But mostly, it will be our stories together that I will treasure, and will keep forever in my heart.

No one knows our future or the future of the United Methodist Church. Rev. Karen is a spiritually centered and organically gifted pastor. She will bring passion and vision needed for ministry in the days ahead. She will be not only faithful to the history and DNA of Claremont United Methodist Church, but she also comes looking for treasure that she will surely find in you.

Grace and Peace always, Pastor Mark

Our Gifts, Service, Witness…

Adult Ministries Corner

“Life Goes On” will next meet on Sunday, June 9 at 11:00 a.m. in the Round Building. Part of the human experience is facing death, dealing with loss, and working our way through grief that at time can threaten to overwhelm us. We need the comfort and support of our community. With this group, we hope to provide this kind of support, comfort, and objective information. If you would like more information, please contact Rev. Martha Morales: (909) 624-9021 or [email protected]. Life Goes On will not meet in July and August.

“Men’s Enrichment Group” gathers on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday morning of each month at Mt. San Antonio Gardens for food, fellowship, individual sharing, and devotional study. Upcoming meetings are June 12 and 26. Want more information? Get an invitation card from one of us: Abraham Alobaidi, Al Smith, Bill Beck, Carl Williams, DarEll Weist, Dave Harshman, Ed Kania, Frank Cookingham, Harold Unland, John Regan, Ron Harrington, and Thom Armstrong. We’re happy to share our experiences.

Book Group: meets the fourth Monday of June, on the 24th, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2. The book for June is She Who Is Without Sin by Martha Bellinger, who will lead discussion. Please read Martha’s article on the next page for more information. All are welcome! Contacts: Peggy Williams & Wilma McLeod

Reading the Bible Together is now on summer hiatus. Study will resume meeting in the fall.

We Offer Prayers and Condolences to… the family, friends, and loved ones of Don Moser, who died on May 23, 2019; and the family, friends, and loved ones of John Tate, who died on May 24, 2019. Both Don and John had been long-time members of Claremont UMC. For many years, Don had been active with the Board of Trustees. For many years, John had been active with the Sanctuary Choir. Their presence will be dearly missed by so many. John’s memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 at 3:00 p.m., here at Claremont UMC in the Sanctuary. Don’s memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 22 at 11:00 a.m., here at Claremont UMC, in the Sanctuary.

Seeking New Ushers: Could it be you?

Ushers welcome worshipers, hand out worship bulletins, guide as you find a place to sit, coordinate passing the offering plates, and stay to make sure things are tidy after worship. We have three open usher slots: two for the Sundays of January, May, and September; AND one for the Sundays of April, August, and December. If you are interested, please contact Jessica, CUMC’s Office Administrator, (909) 624-9021 or [email protected]. To all ushers, thank you for your ministry!

Promoting LGBTQ acceptance: Our book group will read and review for

June, She Who Is Without Sin. This is my second novel about LGBTQ people who were in the churches many of you experienced in the 1950’s and 1960’s but perhaps you never knew they were there, because they were deep in the closet. In this second novel, the perils and plights of a gay man at the church are added, as he befriends the lesbian couple. This leads to some very touching and comical interactions. The books are far from salacious and contain beautiful love scenes. If you have friends or relatives who are struggling to accept the LGBTQ community, reading these books may help them understand how LGBTQ people were intentionally created by God. These books were not written to make money, but to educate. It is my ministry to the progressive

Christian world, and I do not want to make any money on these books. All monies from their sales will be donated to CUMC’s Reconciling Committee.

It is a sad fact that when I wrote my memoire, From Robe To Robe, tracing my unusual life starting out as an ordained UMC minister in the 1970’s, and then moving into law and becoming a judge because the UMC did not ordain openly LGBTQ people, I sent that book to no less than 15 commissions and sub-committees of the UMC, suggesting it might become an adult study resource for the UMC. Not even one of those committees even bothered to write me back. My Methodist parents taught me better manners!

If you wish, you can get your own copies on Amazon, or Barnes and Noble. For anyone who has Audible, I will send the book for free to the first ten people who ask, and you can listen to an award-winning narrator, Ann Richardson, tell these timely stories. All editions of these novels are very reasonably priced. I would humbly ask you to take the time to post a review. The number of reviews really matters to the publishers – the more reviews, the harder they push sales. Also, you can create a nickname for the posting of your review if you are worried about what people would think of you reviewing LGBTQ literature. I will see that all three of my books are available in the church office at the following costs: From Robe to Robe (2010) $10; The Two Ruths (2018) $5; She Who Is Without Sin (2019) $10. Again, all proceeds collected at church will be donated to Claremont UMC’s Reconciling Committee.

~ Many thanks, Martha Bellinger

High School Camp Counselors (Lazy W Ranch)

Lazy W Ranch High School camp (a part of the California-Pacific Camping Ministry) is looking for adult counselors this July 21-27. Adults of at least 22 years old are eligible, though do not think this is only for young people! Some of our best counselors are retired adults.

Counselors will lead discussions and often walk with campers to fun activities, but the essence of the role is to be a conversation partner with young people.

Counselors are invited to be involved in planning camp, but they are also free to simply be counselors. Expected responsibilities of volunteers:

o Spend 1 week at Lazy W Ranch with HS camp (July 21-27, 2019)

o Attend camp training on June 8

o If this is your first time volunteering at camp, also attend June 9 training Expected qualifications of volunteers:

o 22-years-old or older

o Committed Christ Follower (not necessarily United Methodist) For more information or questions, please contact Ashleigh Roberts, Director of Youth Ministries at Palisades UMC Leadership Team for HS Camp 2019 at [email protected].
