Brenda knows her journey to becoming a nurse at a nursing home is uphill, but she takes it one step at a time. When she found MY HOME, a Salvation Army program funded by The Women’s Fund, she was moving out of the shelter system, showed signs of depression, and lost her driver’s license due to outstanding fines. It was anything but an ideal situation for her and her two young children. After counseling and legal services, Brenda’s fines were cleared and she passed her driver’s license exam. Her case manager also reported drastic improvements with both her family life and demeanor. Now, Brenda is well on her way to becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA).

B R E N D A

The Women’s Fund respects everyone we serve—and many are working toward a fresh start in life. While their stories are true, some client names and photos have been changed.

BRENDA’S CASE MANAGER REPORTED DRASTIC IMPROVEMENTS WITH BOTH HER FAMILY LIFE AND DEMEANOR.

C A N D I C ECandice knew firsthand the importance of quality early childcare, but she couldn’t always pay the $250 per month for her four-year- old son Trevor to attend. When she couldn’t afford it, she would miss work to stay home with him. Over time, Candice’s repeated absences put her at risk for losing her job. Fortunately, Candice connected with Forever Home, a First Light, Inc. program funded by The Women’s Fund. A social worker helped place Trevor in a Jefferson County Head Start class where he was able to play with older children and develop social skills. His academic skills are blossoming and he is maturing faster than at his previous daycare. Because Candice’s work attendance has improved drastically, she was able to open a savings account and has recently accepted a promotion.

CANDICE OPENEDA SAVINGS ACCOUNT AND RECENTLY ACCEPTED A PROMOTION.

I MAGINE THAT YOU ARE STUCK AND DESPERATE. THERE’S NO WAY TO STAY AFLOAT.

You’re a 21-year-old single mother of two, working at a fast food restaurant and earning less than $20,000 per year.

That’s hardly enough money to pay the rent, put food on the table and cover basic childcare. Then your car breaks down and you have no savings to get it fixed. All of a sudden, keeping your job is out of the question and you can no longer afford daycare.

This is not fiction. This is reality. It is happening to thousands of single mothers in our area every single day. But your investment in The Women’s Fund helps write a different kind of story for many moms.

Your generous support gives low-income moms and their families a chance to achieve long-term success instead of facing one short-term emergency after another. Through our nationally recognized initiative, Collaboration Institute, The Women’s Fund is bringing agencies together, often for the first time, to provide the skills, education, childcare, and life coaching essential for women to succeed. We’re focusing on both generations at the same time.

Because of this pioneering work of The Women’s Fund, low-income single mothers and their children now have a choice and a chance.

2016 marks The Women’s Fund’s 20th anniversary. For twenty years, supporters like you believed in a stronger voice for women and girls.

In the past five years, since becoming an independent nonprofit, 5,534 women and 3,384 of their children have benefitted from programs of The Women’s Fund.

Our vision for the future is even bolder. By 2020, with your help, 12,000 women and their children will be on their way to financial independence via two-generation programs. That’s ten percent of all women and children living in poverty in Birmingham.

You can make this vision possible! Join with us as together we create a community of hope and opportunity for all women in Greater Birmingham.

Sincerely,

Lisa Engel 2015 Board Chair

M O N I Q U E“There were times when I doubted myself,” says Monique, a participant in Prescription for Success, a program funded by The Women’s Fund as part of our Families Forward initiative that gave her the training she needed to become a pharmacy technician. “But everyone around me, especially my career counselor, was so encouraging. They would not let me give up.”

Monique is the single mother of two small children, Shaniyah and B.J. Prior to enrolling, Monique worked part time at Target and lived in her car for a time. When she heard about the opportunity, she signed up right away. While she was in class or studying, her kids were in educational childcare just down the hall.

“[The Women’s Fund] got me back on track in my life,” Monique said. “I was able to get a steady job and a stable home. My children saw mommy go to school and it meant a lot for them. We were all going to school. They were excited about all of us getting to learn.” Monique graduated at the top of her class and now works as a pharmaceutical technician at Walgreens. She starts nursing school at Jefferson State Community College this fall.

“MY CHILDREN SAW MOMMY GO TO SCHOOL AND IT MEANT A LOT TO THEM. WE WERE ALL GOING TO SCHOOL.”

“The jobs that are available without an advanced degree pay low wages that weren’t enough to provide for my family of two. I took low wage jobs because I didn’t have a college degree. I started college at UAB in the 1980s and dropped out when my father became ill. In 2011 I went back to school for two and half years at Jefferson State and then transferred to UAB to work toward a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. I’m scheduled to receive my degree in fall 2016.”

- Katrina, a mother of a student at Cornerstone Schools. With The Women’s Fund’s tuition assistance for her child at Cornerstone, she was able to pay for her bachelor’s degree.

“Working with The Women’s Fund has changed the way Jeff State thinks about its students. Now we’re more aware of the challenges they face outside the classroom, especially our single mothers. We’re forming new partnerships to help our parents complete the programs. A lot of organizations could benefit from collaboration, but it’s hard. We need a convener. Someone has to lead. The only one who can fill that role is The Women’s Fund.”

Thanks to your investment, we are removing barriers and creating opportunities for low income women to become self-sufficient.

Here’s how:

COLLABORATION

Rather than create new agencies, we fund agency partnerships that better address the needs of low income moms and their children at the same time. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we are enhancing the work of all.

OUR COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES:

2015-2016 COLLABORATION INSTITUTEA two-year curriculum to create and fund formal collaborative proposals that use a two-generation approach to increase the financial security of low-income women and their children.

STEPPING INTO HOMEOWNERSHIPA two-part initiative which includes a public campaign to inform low-income women about local housing and available credit services and a 2:1 matched savings program for homeownership or post-secondary education.

FAMILIES FORWARD A collaborative, two-generation initiative that provides single mothers with post-secondary education and skills training needed for in-demand jobs such as pharmacy technicians, vision assistants, or dental assistants while simultaneously providing early childhood education for their children.

ADVOCACY

Without change in obstructive state policies, women’s success is finite. We work to educate elected officials about policy-related issues affecting women and advocate for change to allow women to reach their full potential.

OUR ADVOCACY ISSUES:

PREDATORY LENDING REFORM Current regulations allow payday and title loan shops to charge interest up to 456 APR. We support legislation to lower interest rates, set a minimum loan term of 30 days, limit the number of loans allowed per year, and maintain a central database for payday loans so Alabama consumers can access needed small loan products without deepening their financial strain.

PRE-K EXPANSIONWe support the expansion of Alabama’s First Class Pre-K program, ranked number one in the nation, to all families. Currently, only 1 in 5 children in the state has access to this program.
