I’ve BeenThinking...Rob Lidz, Co-Editor

I've been thinking Delaire has a remarkable quality that sets it apart from other country clubs - "Welcoming"

Over the summer, I have witnessed two new couples being enfolded into our community immediately and seamlessly. One of them within two hours of their arrival on campus. They came to a Friday night dinner and were sitting by themselves. Before they finished their drinks, members came to their table to introduce themselves and immediately, they were invited to join another group of eight or ten members.

I observed the same thing several weeks earlier when new members, eating alone, were invited to join another couple. Then several weeks later, they decided last minute to come to the same Friday night dinner mentioned above. Before they could sit down, large chairs were replaced with smaller ones and a table for eight became a table for ten.

This is the spirit of Delaire. Barbara and I enjoyed the same reception five years ago when we joined and we are so glad it continues unabated.

A Few Words...Judy Tarter, Editor

When this issue of "The Wonderful World of Delaire" arrives, we all know that "summer is over" and when you read the Delaire upcoming Season Schedule, you will be as excited as Alan and I are to have even more fun with our "Old & New Friends"!

Whether you had fun at Camp Delaire , traveling or visiting family at sleep away camp - I wanted to share my fun 'childhood memories' at camp -- as they reminded me of how we cared about each other - "friendships that were made and still remain today"! I thought of the song below that we sang to each other every day at Camp Odetah-in Connecticut. Although the tune may not be familiar to you, I do believe that the words will be meaningful today for our families at Delaire and all over the world. I am happy to sing it to you anytime!

"Friends, Friends, Friends... we will always be-Whether in fair or in hot, stormy weatherour friendships will keep us together...The red, white and blue... we will always hold trueFriendships together mean Friendships foreverat "Camp Delaire"!

Camp Delaire is "Year Round Fun " so let's all continue to share in this great Wonderful World "together"! With our new season beginning - let's hold hands and sing together - "Friends-Friends-Friends"!

Mark ZuckerPresident, Board of Governors

Dear Delaire Members:

I want to update the entire Delaire family on developments concerning our search for a new General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, our 5 year Capital Expenditure Plan and changes made with Food and Beverage:

Search For Our New General Manager/Chief Operating Officer:The Search Committee, led by Gary Rose and his Search Committee, has worked very hard to find our new General Manager and Chief Operating Officer since it was announced that Trent Squire would be leaving. The Search Committee spent countless hours reviewing qualifications and backgrounds on 10 potential candidates along with significant time spent on face-to-face interviews with many of these excellent candidates. Once the Search Committee’s work was completed, the Board of Governors met with the two finalists in lengthy final interviews. I’m pleased to tell you that the Board was unanimous in its final decision!

Therefore, I am thrilled to announce that Joe Basso, MCM, CCE has accepted the position of General Manager and Chief Operating Officer for Delaire. Joe comes to us from the Birmingham Country Club in Birmingham, Michigan where he has served in a similar capacity for the past ten years. Birmingham Country Club is a Distinguished Club and Platinum Club of America. Prior to Birmingham, Joe spent four and half years at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He is one of a very small, select group of club managers to receive the coveted MCM (Master Club Manager) designation, and one of only seven actively working today.

Joe plans to join Delaire on or about November 15th and hopes to come to the Club a few times before his official start date as he wants to bond with staff, begin to meet members and as well as look for housing in the area with his wife Beckie. I am very excited we were able to attract someone with the talent and experience that Joe possesses.

I want to especially thank the Search Committee for their time and devotion to this important hire. The Committee was comprised of Chairman Gary Rose, Lenore Gordon, Barbara Lurie, Stan Davis, Mo Phelan, Joan Gray and Sheryl Wengel (consultant to the Committee). Again, I thank the Committee for a job very well done! I also want to recognize your Board of Governors along with Murray Gross and Art Newman for their commitment to this effort!

5 Year Capital Expenditure Program: Significant progress has been made in a number of areas of the Program. After interviewing 4 designers for the refurbishment and updating of our Club House, outdoor dinning and pool area; The Long Range Planning and Club House Committees have recommended we hire Ferrari-Interiors to lead the design and refurbishment segment of the Program. The Perimeter Beautification Committee has been formed to focus on re-landscaping of the canal areas that were “clear-cut” by Lake Worth Drainage District. The committee has interviewed two landscape design firms and will shortly make a decision on which one to recommend lead the Beautification Project. The other segments associated with the 5 year Program are actively progressing; such as the refurbishment of our Kitchens and replacement of our mechanical systems associated with the running of our Club House.

Food & Beverage:Changes with Food & Beverage have begun. With the leadership of David Simon, David Sheldon (Director of Food & Beverage), Roger Edwards and Chef Glen: changes are here and more on the way. We are minimizing buffet dinning with great emphasis on ala carte dining, provide greater variety and healthier options on our menus. They are developing a new dining location option for the season with a “special” menu called Delaire Prime. It’s a bit of a surprise and I can’t wait to try it.

Please let the Davids, Roger and Chef know your recommendations and preferences since they want to hear from you. It’s a time of change as we move forward in a new and exciting direction, but to be successful they need your input.

The New Season:The new season is fast approaching and I look forward to seeing our entire Delaire family being together again at Camp Delaire. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Joe Basso, MCM, CCE

News from Your P.O.A.Marc J. Bressler, P.O.A. President

The Board and Committee members of your Delaire Country Club Property Owner's Association, Inc. (POA) has had an active year and appreciate the many positive comments from our members. The responses to our open meetings enable the smooth operation of the many facets of the POA responsibilities. In addition to our standing committees, there are two ad hoc committees that have been putting in many hours of work that I want to report to you. These are two activities that will require a full membership vote in the coming year.

First, we have undertaken to review and update the POA's documents. They are the Articles of Incorporation, the Declaration of Covenants and the By-Laws. The task requires to eliminate conflicts between the documents, remove outdated items and conform to State Law. As a result of many amendments being added to the governing of the Association of many years, there appears inconsistencies in the documents and the State of Florida continues to add and delete POA members and Board responsibilities. It is anticipated that we will schedule a town hall meeting, during the season, to discuss the proposed changes and get membership input before submitting the updates for a vote.

The second matter that will require a membership vote will be the maintenance, repair and partial replacement of the storm drainage project. As you have been kept up to date during the investigation process, the system is not operating to maximum efficiency and is compromised in several areas. Although it is still working adequately, we want to avoid any extreme maintenance failures before they occur. This has been budgeted previously and the Board does not anticipate any increase to be needed to our established assessment. The project is not only enormous-involving logistics to our Golf Course and Lakes, but the timing depends on the weather. We are working closely with the Club Greens Committee a well as the Golf Course Superintendent.

Reminder - Our Board meetings are open to our members and your comments and input at the meetings are welcome. The meetings are scheduled for the second Monday of each month at 4pm in the Club Board room.

P.O.A. ReportGail Karpel, P.O.A. Secretary

We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and welcome back all members who are now returning for the season.

Our aim is to make sure everyone is happy and safe. Below are a few suggestions that will make life easier for everyone.

1. Please make sure that you call the gate when you have a guest or workmen coming to your home. If you have the gate app, please use it.

2. When you have guests or workmen at your home, please have them park in your driveway. During the week, there are so many cars and trucks parked on the street, it is difficult for residents to drive on our roads. Please observe the courtesy for driving on our roads - which is - cars approaching parked vehicles should allow oncoming vehicles to pass before proceeding.

3. Please make sure that your guests and workmen park on the correct side of the street. Parking is on the even numbered side on even numbered months: odd numbered side on the odd numbered months. Our streets are not very wide and it is difficult to drive on the roads if vehicles are parked on both sides of the street.

4. For your safety - Make sure the gate has your house key and/or the code for your alarm so if there is an emergency, the gate can access your home. This is for your safety.

5. Please make sure your trash cans are put outside at the correct time and taken in the morning. Reminder, cans and recycling are to remain on your property - not on the streets.

6. Please have your roofs cleaned when notified to do so.

7. For our safety - It is important to come to a complete stop at all Stop signs and observe the speed limit at all times.

We wish everyone a happy and healthy season. If anyone on the POA can be of help, please contact us.

As the summer quickly flies by, we are preparing for the 2019-20 golf season. The calendar is being completed with all of the women’s, men’s and mixed golf events.

I hope all of you have had a great summer with family, friends, golf, travel, and of course the most important item, great health.

I want to thank all of our members who have been participating in the summer golf leagues here at Delaire and around Palm Beach County.

The golf pro shop will start receiving the new fall merchandise in October. The best offerings from the new current brands will be added to our upscale merchandise, such as Lucky in Love, Tzu Tzu, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sport Haley, Jofit, Daily Sports, GG Blue, EF Pro, Anatomie, Golftini, Tail, Belyn Key and Ibkul for the women. For the men, we will be featuring Donald Ross, Peter Millar, Dunning, Callaway and Foot Joy.

Several demo days will be scheduled with golf club companies Callaway, Taylor Made, Ping, Titliest and PXG.

For those who are not already aware, Monica Castro, the golf shop buyer and manager since May 2013, accepted a position at Lynn University beginning August 12. I want to thank Monica for her outstanding performance and wish her the very best going forward. I will be actively interviewing candidates for her position.

The Ladies Tuesday clinic will resume on Tuesday, September 17th at 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM. Anyone interested can sign up "weekly" in the Golf Pro Shop beginning September 12th.

IRRIGATION OF DELAIRE GOLF COURSESMany members have asked me about the water used for irrigating the golf course. The water we use is not drinking water, but water that is treated for conservation reasons. This recycled or effluent water has a chemistry which is slightly higher in salt content (Sodium) than the well water or municipal water used in our homes.

This is a quote from the City of Boynton Beach website:

"The cities of Boynton Beach and Delray Beach jointly own and operate the South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Facility. The facility treats an average of about 17 million gallons per day of used water and sewage from the two cities.

Following guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Palm Beach County Health Department, the facility treats and disinfects the water to safely return it to the environment. Most of the treated water (or "effluent") is used as reclaimed water to irrigate golf courses and designated areas in Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. Remaining effluent is discharged into a deep injection well. Solids (or "sludge") are processed into fertilizer pellets by the Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority.

Boynton Beach Utilities operates and maintains a sewage collection and transmission system with approximately 165 wastewater lift stations that pump raw wastewater to the South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Facility for treatment."

**What this means to us on the golf course is that the grass will have slightly different properties including a paler color, than would result from using well water. We currently need to treat it with additional fertilizer, which is an expense to our operations. We've been looking at a fertigation system which would address this, but this too has recurring expenses. Plus, we're not sure we would get the desired result should we have this installed. Some nearby courses have gone this route, but final results have yet to be analyzed.

We've also taken an approach of growing the fairways and roughs higher. This has a few affects to us as golfers.First, a majority of our members believe the esthetics are greatly improved.Second, there is more definition between fairways and roughs.Third, shot making has become more important than just rolling the ball (Lessons available from the golf pros).

We're planning on replacing the sprinkler heads, along with the computer controls that operate them. The system has passed its expected life expectancy, and we need to repair our heads to the tune of $40,000 per year. A new system will be much more efficient and minimize the need for repairs, as well as have the ability to be operated remotely. We're also planning on raising the heads to be flush or just below grade. It's not only an aesthetic and playable item, but a safety issue.

Golf RulesAlan Tarter, USGA - Certified Expert on the Rules of GolfSenior Certified Rules Official of the FSGA

UPDATES FOR THE CHANGE IN THEHANDICAP SYSTEM STARTING IN 2020!

Beginning in 2020, the World Handicap System will take effect everywhere- all over the world.

Some of the key changes are listed below:

An average-based calculation of a handicap taken from the best eight out of the last 20 scores "entered".

A calculation that considers the impact that abnormal course and weather conditions might have on a player's scores each day.

Daily Handicap Revisions: It will be very important that golfers post their scores on the day that they play.

A limit of Net Double Bogey on the maximum hole score (for handicapping purposes only). Example: A Course Handicap of 18 receives one stroke per hole for 18 holes; the player's max score is triple bogey on any hole, which equals a Net Double Bogey.

A maximum handicap limit of 54.0, regardless of gender, to encourage more golfers to measure and track their performance to increase their enjoyment of the game.

An exceptional score will be a score that is at least 7.0 strokes better than the player's handicap index at the time the round was played.

Further details will be explained as they become available!

To All at Delaire Country Club,

Thank you again for your hospitality. Everyone had a blast and wanted me to relay our appreciation. We look forward to seeing you all again.

The Food & Beverage team has been working diligently on developing new dining programs over the summer that add more 'a la carte' experiences while embellishing the variety of menu choices. Our Tuesday casual Grill night has evolved from its original inception to a viable program offering over 17 menu choices, including a variety of salads, over size burgers, pizzas and weekly featured selections such as Shrimp Fajitas and Sliced Prime Rib Sandwiches - all intended to create a casual environment with comfortable price points. We always encourage reservations as it helps us prepare food and schedule the correct staffing levels. On Tuesday we accept Walk-ins.

During the summer we introduced the "4645 White Cedar' dining concept as an experimental program to bring fresh, contemporary, continental cuisine with something for everyone as the inspired objective. An expanded list of starter courses designed to create a table buzz, with popular items such as the Bang Bang Shrimp and Lobster Deviled Eggs, are featured. Members may also enjoy a variety of salads and hand held favorites as well. Chef Glenn has expanded his repertoire and is offering more gluten free and vegan options for our membership. Our Wednesday evenings are specifically designed for member entertaining and family dining with over nine classic entrees, including fresh fish, steaks, pasta and Braised Short Ribs just to name a few. The price range runs from reasonable lite fair starters such as classical Onion Soup to top of the line center cut Veal Chops.

Our Friday evenings continue to evolve under the leadership of Chef Glenn, who recently rolled out our New "Signature Series" concept for our summer Friday evenings. Our culinary team is committed to creating a different table starter course each week as well as a passed signature appetizer. The entire experience is complimented by your server's description of Chefs specialty items, such as the very popular "Stuffed Lobster", a true Jersey Shore experience.

Over the summer- on Sundays - we brought back a new version of The Barbeque Grill Out. This is intended to be a casual, fun, social night. This new version focused on a variety of grilled summer favorites to include seafood, beef, chicken and items that are seasonal favorites. The Women's Discussion Group met four times last season. We discussed many interesting topics, including Men and Women in Conversation, Who are the people who inspired you throughout your life? What did they do or say to encourage you to take a risk, influence you to change your perspective or to support your goals?, Reminiscing is Good for Your Health and Your Memory, and Shark Tank at Delaire. All were fascinating and enlightening and women shared many valuable thoughts and ideas with each other. In each discussion, we were inspired by the stories women revealed about themselves and their families.

Our goal for the discussion groups is to connect with each other, share common interests and ideas, and gain useful and positive information to consider for our own lives. We look forward to your topic suggestions and your participation.

Delaire members passed their after-dinner hours working up a sweat on the dance floor. Dance instructors Jenny & Ramphis (dance-flavor.com) led the group through Salsa and Merengue dance steps. They came to make new friends, make memories with old friends, to get their bodies moving after a good meal and to dance - but mostly they came to have fun! Though the group was equal parts dance enthusiasts and those who tagged along, they all found a way to keep the laughter and joyful spirit of Happy Hour going a bit longer. We have had two fantastic fun filled nights of dancing and laughter together and we all look forward to the next schedule of Dance Classes at Delaire!

TIPS FOR TENNISKnowing when to come to the net or to stay back; use the Traffic Light Theory

Red Light Area: When hitting a ball in this area, you are more in a defensive position. A traffic light that is red means "stop." The same applies to tennis; stop and stay back at the baseline.

Yellow Light Area: This is the only area where it is up to the individual player whether they want to hit the ball and come to the net, or stay back. Just like a yellow traffic light, sometimes you go and sometimes you stop.

Green Light Area: A short ball in this area should always force you to go to the net. Just like a green traffic light, you should go.

The human brain is famously plastic. It has the remarkable ability to change its structure and function in response to both internal and external influences. Because they're still growing, children's rains are the most flexible, which helps explain why kids are often able to learn much more quickly than adults. However the brain can remain plastic well into adulthood and even into older age. Indeed, research suggests that the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in memory, can continue to produce new brain cells (neurons) even into our seventies. That's good news because plasticity and growth appear to play a role in both protecting against and alleviating symptoms of a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinsons disease, depression and obsessive - compulsive disorder. There's much one can do to promote optimal brain health. Many approaches are simple lifestyle measures that cost little or nothing to implement. By making small changes to what you eat: how and how often you move; how you spent your leisure time and other aspects of your life, you may be able to not only foster good brain health, but to preserve and improve your memory and mood as well. Here are the recommendations.

DIET - Extinguish inflammations - Research suggests people who eat a Mediterranean style diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains or fish are significantly less likely to develop cognitive problems than their peers who have a high intake of trans fats found in baked and fried foods, margarine, fast food and junk food - all associated with consistently worse cognitive performance.

GO FISH - Studies have found people who increase their intake of Omega 3 fatty acids show enhanced performance on memory tests. There's also evidence to support the idea that Omega 3's can reduce symptoms of depression and other mental health disorders. Wild caught Alaskan salmon, sardines, herring and sable fish are rich in Omega 3's and are relatively low in potential environmental Toxins.

GREEN TEA - Population studies have found that people who habitually consume tea have reduced odds of experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Some research links drinking Green Tea to a better working memory. One study of older adults showed that those who regularly drank Tea had a 50% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those who rarely drank Tea. In addition, even tea drinkers who possess the gene associated with increased Alzheimers risk had an 86% Lower Risk of Cognitive decline compared to their peers without the gene.

EXERCISE - It may seem like the last thing you want to do when you're feeling down. However, physical activity can have a powerful affect on mental health. There is much more to be said on this subject - such as managing stress - getting a good nights sleep - keeping your brain active. "Use it or lose it" supplies as much to the brain as the reset of the body. Activities such as reading, writing, puzzles and card games are all very positive activities to do.

Get Connected - maintain relationships with people of ALL AGES, join a club, take classes! All are very "Beneficial".

We are proud to report the Delaire Fore Paws program continues to thrive and our cat population is healthy and under control.

The program is now in its fourth year. This could not have been accomplished without the continued support from our residents and staff. As always, we are looking for more "paws" to help with our daily feeding... I welcome all residents to contact me to set up a kitty tour one morning and see first hand what's involved. The time commitment is not onerous and is very rewarding!

BEHIND THE SCENESStewart Sims

BEHIND THE SCENES

David Sheldon, our new Director of Food and Beverage Operations, joined the Delaire staff in May, 2019 after 9 years as the Director of Food and Beverage at Willoughby Golf Club in Stuart, Florida.

Originally from Washington, D.C., where David interned as an Executive Chef at The Sheraton Hotel, David and his wife, Patty, moved to Florida in 2000 to become the Club House Manager for Addison Reserve. In addition to his position at Addison, David has been the General Manager and Food and Beverage Director at Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens and the Clubhouse Manager/Food and Beverage Director at Frenchman's Reserve - also in Palm Beach Gardens.

In addition to his management experience, David is one of fewer than 1% of Food and Beverage Managers who have received certification as a Food and Beverage Manager from the Hotel and Motel Association (a program run by Michigan State), and David is continuing his studies to become a certified dietician.

David and Patty have 4 children and 9 grandchildren. In keeping with the family profession, their youngest daughter, Karen, is the General Manager at the Hutchinson Inn on Hutchinson Island.

We welcome David Sheldon warmly and proudly as our new Director of Food and Beverage Operations at Delaire!

Our parents, Sylvia and Philip Tarter, chose Delaire Country Club shortly after it opened soon realizing why their friends "up North" made the same choice. They loved Delaire from their first visit which included a day playing golf, enjoying lunch and seeing the beautiful lifestyle everyone shared. That first day they asked to see homes. And, of course, they fell in love with one and so began their Delaire journey.

This is the home we were fortunate to enjoy with them and our children every school vacation we could get away. Whether we played on the golf course or tennis courts, ate daily in the dining room, went swimming at the pool or exercised at the gym, we met so many friendly and welcoming families, who, like us, were visiting their families at the Club. We knew then, we wanted to continue these fun and warm vacations with our children and grandchildren "to continue the dreams our parents created for us". Every holiday we developed friendships with more Delaire families.

Our children met and our grandchildren are now meeting new Delaire friends every holiday. And, as the years roll on we all continue to enjoy the fun life at "Camp Delaire". We thank our parents for sharing this wonderful life, making their home our home. We kept some of their treasures and created many new ones allowing us to give to our children what we received from our parents.

The Tarter Family will always think of our beautiful, wonderful and fun life at Delaire - "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow " as "A Dream Come True" - where acquaintances fast become friends and where "Dreams Become Reality Forever"!

IN OUR OWN WORDSHere is what Delaire members who volunteer are saying about their experience:

• "I urge our Delaire members to participate in the volunteer program at OVES, You will experience immeasurable joy when you see the children respond to the attention and love from our volunteers." Marilyn Snyder

• "Even though developing relationships with these young students may be challenging, watching them grow personally and academically is an amazing experience." Stewart Sims

• "Participating in this program makes me feel so good. Despite the challenges that many of the kids face, they are all really special and eager to learn. Small steps become major milestones." Barbara Singer

• "After Jerry and I both retired, we were looking for something that we could do together, that would be meaningful and give us a sense of purpose. When we heard about the partnership between Delaire members and Orchard View Elementary, it seemed like a perfect fit.

• Over the past two years, working together in a second-grade classroom, we have both gotten back more than we have given. The reaction from the kids every time we step into the classroom warms our hearts. We look forward to each week, whatever it may bring. Working with these kids, who need so much attention, has been a wonderful experience, and we look forward to starting a new school year." Linda Saslow

• "After teaching for 23 years in Broward County Elementary Schools and being retired for 10 years, I was delighted to find out about Delaire member's concern and devotion to Orchard View Elementary! Being a new member of this community, it warmed my heart to see others who took pride in giving of themselves. I am thrilled to be able to go back to such a rewarding experience!" Judy Canter

I feel like we are making a difference in their lives, and for that reason, I'll be "back to school" in the fall." Jackie Liptz

The Delaire Book Club will meet for the first time this season on Monday, October 28, 2019, at 11:00 AM, in the Ladies Card Room. We will discuss The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo. It is a novel set in Malaysia in the 1930s. Kirkus Reviews describes it as "A sumptuous garden maze of a novel that immerses readers in a complex vanished world."

Quick-witted Ji Lin, who wants to be a doctor, is stuck as an apprentice dressmaker (a more suitable occupation for a girl in Malaysia in 1930s), moonlighting as a dancehall girl to help pay off her mother's Mah Jongg debts. When one of her dancehall partners leaves behind a gruesome souvenir, Ji Lin begins a unique journey that connects her in unexpected ways to the other characters and sends her on a daring adventure.

Eleven-year-old houseboy Ren is also on a mission, racing to fulfill his former master's dying wish, that Ren find the finger, lost years ago in an accident, and bury it with his body. Ren

has 49 days to do so or his master's soul will wander the earth forever, unable to rest in peace.

As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Ren's lives intertwine in unimaginable ways. The Night Tiger pulls us into a world of servants and masters, age-old superstitions, Chinese mythology, loyalty, sibling rivalry, forbidden love and identity. (All above Amazon Review)

How You Can Help PUT THE BRAKES ON AGING By Eating Right and Moving More

Did you know SITTING is considered the NEW SMOKING!

It affects you even if you workout regularly. Staying active and eating right are the best ways to fight disease and prevent the problems that make you "feel old".

Research has shown that WALKING can help protect brain health even in those who already have signs of memory loss. Common conditions influenced by diet such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes harm both cardiovascular and cognitive health.

"The Central Message" says Irwin Rosenberg M.D. - senior scientist at Tufts Neuroscience and Aging laboratory is what is good for the heart is what is good for the brain. Even brief periods of movement can reverse the harmful effects of sitting. The bottom line is "even small amounts of movement throughout the day seemed to counteract some of the ill affects of sitting. "A Small Walk is Better than No Walk at All!"

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTMESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTMark Zucker, President, Board of Governors

As some of you may know, Delaire has earned the prestigious Distinguished Club award, as determined by the annual Distinguished Clubs award program conducted by BoardRoom magazine, since 2014. I am pleased to announce that 2019 marks the fifth consecutive year in which Delaire is amongst this elite group of residential country clubs.

To be a Distinguished Club is to be one of only a few, highly select private clubs that are recognized as providing a member experience at a level attained by only the finest clubs in the world. Distinguished Clubs are determined by a thorough on campus vetting and awarding process conducted by the magazine's Distinguished Clubs team of industry specialists.

More information about the award is available at www.distinguishedclubs.com

Mark Your Calendars : November 20 - An evening with Irving Berlin December 18 - Motown

Here come the surprises - so mark your calendars with these dates, too! February 12 | March 18 | April 22

I'm more than pleased that fellow member Alex Clark has joined our committee. He has a wealth of knowledge about the environment and a passion for protecting the planet. He teaches at Nova Southeastern University. His specific field is AI.

We are always trying at Delaire to be a better green club, more than just on the golf course & tennis courts.

Last month, we began recycling old bulbs at the club house. This is especially important with fluorescent bulbs that contain toxic Mercury and emit toxic fumes when broken. Thanks to Jim Newman, who started the program years ago, we recycle batteries left at battery recycling stations in the fitness center and the men's & ladies locker rooms.

A few weeks ago foam cup collection station's were installed at the valet & security areas.

We appreciate the efforts of our members for the steadily increasing amounts of recycling that are collected at stations on the golf course, the tennis center & golf starter areas. Plus, as reported in the previous issue, we continue to purchase fewer foam cups than last year.

A reminder to everyone about all those deliveries we receive ... cardboard boxes are collected Wednesday only, and only, if they're flat. Boxes that are not flat are not recycled. Saturday is not a recycling day, other than for large electronics.

Let's continue recycling - For our Planet, For our Children, For our Grandchildren - For all of us!

DELAIRE COUPLES EVENING CANASTADELAIRE COUPLES EVENING CANASTAJackie Liptz, Chairperson [email protected]

Currently, we have over 60 couples on the e-mail list for ''Couples Evening Canasta". The proposed - official - start "play date" is Thursday, Oct. 25th.

Players will meet at 6:00 pm for socializing, dinner and to pick randomly out of a bag, for another couple to play with. Games begin approximately at 6:45pm - playing until your game is finished (typically before 9:00 pm.).

If you wish, sandwiches are ordered from TooJays, by me, or you may bring your own dinner. Occasionally, some participants arrive after having dinner at home. You may bring your own drinks. Snacks in the ladies card room are your dessert.

Please understand that I try very hard to have an even number, so I ask that when you agree to play that you consider your response to be a solid commitment. If we have an uneven number of participants, I have some members who agree to help out and play when I call them, with little notice.

*If you would like to play in our popular Couples Canasta and are not on my list, simply please e-mail me to add you. You will receive an e-mail from me several weeks before the next play date, asking for your response.

If you would like to learn how to play, or need some instruction, Gail Karpel ([email protected]) and I ( [email protected]) will be offering lessons on Monday mornings at 9:00am in the ladies canasta room - beginning in October. A sign up sheet is posted in the Ladies Locker room if you wish to sign up for lessons.

Wishing you "Lots of Melds"!

MEN'S ONLY CANASTAMEN'S ONLY CANASTAARE YOU LOOKING FOR ANOTHER ACTIVITY?

The men at "Camp Delaire" have established a weekly canasta game on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30pm in the men's card room. The game is open to all, especially newbies. There may be more kibitzing then playing but we get to solve most of the world's problems. IN ADDITION, the men schedule a monthly evening game which usually includes wings and pizza or, by a vote of the majority, something different. No player is too unskilled to play. If you would like to be added to the list and included in the emails contact Marc Bressler 908-930-8102 or [email protected].

Use one of these programs to bid farewell to simple passwords recorded on paper! It's never too late to secure your digital life, prevent identity theft, preserve your credit rating and save valuable time with a password manager.

TECH TALKTECH TALKGary Weinstein

Manage Your Passwords (Before It's Too Late)Password managers are downloadable software programs that generate, store and automatically log passwords into websites. You only need to remember a single, strong easy to remember "master password" to open and unlock the program. You should store this password in a secure location and provide it to family members requiring future access. Three of the leading programs are 1Password, LastPass and Dashlane, with the latter two offering free limited versions.

To avoid being overwhelmed, begin by entering your user name and password into the program only for your most important email, banking, brokerage and commercial websites. If your current password is weak or repetitious, use the program's built-in password generator to create new ones. You can specify the new password's length and type (letters, numbers, special symbols and/or pronounceable). Next repeat the process each time you navigate to a different website until all of your passwords have been entered.

During the initial installation, password managers add "extensions" or plug in applets (mini programs) to your browser (Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Chromium Edge) and a small icon to the right side of the address bar. Clicking on the icon opens a data entry box for your master password. Once unlocked, the program can insert passwords, addresses, phone numbers and credit card information into website forms. Alternatively, these programs can be used as standalone products without a browser extension, but you will need to copy and paste passwords into each website.

You can download "app" versions of these programs for your cell phone and tablet as well. The apps synchronize your passwords across all devices and can be unlocked with your master password, fingerprint or facial recognition.

For additional security, these programs identify weak passwords and websites offering "Two Factor Authentication." Once the latter is enabled in a website's security settings, you will be texted or emailed a second temporary password to complete the login process.

Password managers double as "digital safety deposit boxes," securely storing important files, legal documents, social security numbers, bank account information, drivers' licenses, passports, etc. Strong encryption algorithms prevent hackers from exploiting your personal data.
