CourseDescription
Thereisaquietrevolution going oninEuropeandCanada—arevolution thatischanging thewayUSarchitectsviewstructuralwoodbuilding systems.
Asastructuralbuilding component, woodoffersmanyenvironmentalbenefits,including theabilitytomaximizecarbonstorageandminimize carbondioxideemissionsassociatedwiththedesign, construction andoperationofbuildings. ArchitectsinEuropearealreadyusing“massivetimber”designprinciplesandtechniques totakeadvantageofwood’scarbonbenefits, drivingpositivechangethrough thepowerofwooddesign.However, thesetechniquesarenotyetwidelyusedintheU.S.
Thispresentationwillconnect structurewitharchitecturebyintroducing avarietyofinnovativestructuralwoodproducts andsystems.CasestudyexamplesofmoderninnovativeprojectsinCanada,AustraliaandEuropewilldemonstratehowtouseandapplytheseproducts andsystems.Makenomistake—theseexamplesarenotyourgrandfather’s traditionalheavy-timber-stylebuildings. Thesearecreative,imaginativestructuresdesigned totakeadvantageofwood’senvironmental andstructuralbenefits.Byshowing howarchitectsinotherpartsof theworldarepushing theboundaries, wehope tohelpdesigners intheU.S.becomeinspired toblendstructurebackintoarchitectureusingmasstimberandotherwoodsystems.
