Other persons are a giftDear Brothers and Sisters, Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ’s victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. Christians are asked to return to God “with all their hearts” (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for me- diocrity and to grow in friendship with the Lord. Jesus is the faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our re- turn; by that patient expectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive. Lent is a favourable season for deepening our spiritual life through the means of sanctification offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply. I would now like to consider the parable of the rich man and Laza- rus (cf. Lk 16:19-31). Let us find inspiration in this meaningful story, for it provides a key to under- standing what we need to do in order to attain true happiness and eternal life. It exhorts us to sincere conversion. 1. The other person is a gift The parable begins by presenting its two main characters. The poor man is described in greater detail: he is wretched and lacks the strength even to stand. Lying before the door of the rich man, he fed on the crumbs falling from his table. His body is full of sores and dogs come to lick his wounds (cf. vv. 20-21). The picture is one of great misery; it portrays a man disgraced and pitiful. The scene is even more dramatic if we consid- er that the poor man is called Lazarus: a name full of promise, which literally means God helps. This character is not anonymous. His features are clearly delineated and he appears as an indi- vidual with his own story. While practically invisi- ble to the rich man, we see and know him as someone familiar. He becomes a face, and as such, a gift, a priceless treasure, a human being whom God loves and cares for, despite his con- crete condition as an outcast. Lazarus teaches us that other persons are a gift. A right relationship with people consists in gratefully recognizing their value. Even the poor person at the door of the rich is not a nuisance, but a summons to conversion and to change. The parable first invites us to open the doors of our heart to others because each person is a gift, whether it be our neighbour or an anonymous pauper. Lent is a favourable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day. Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love. The word of God helps us to open our eyes to welcome and love life, especially when it is weak and vulnerable. But in order to do this, we have to take seriously what the Gospel tells us about the rich man. todays Reflection / Inspiration To be Continued

MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2017:

“The Word is a gift. Other persons are a gift”

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the

certain goal of Easter, Christ’s victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. CHILDREN CHRISTMAS PARTY ATTRACTS DIVERSE CHILDREN Children from all walks of life on Sunday January

8, 2017 converged at the Church premises as early as 07.00 hours to attend their Christmas Party which was held in the afternoon. Some children that at-tended English Mass sent panic mode to some pa-rishioners as they jostled for pews/benches. Ushers had torrid time on this day controlling the ever in-creasing number of children who kept trooping in and out of the Church. Some non-Catholics children were seen sun-bathing outside the Church premises waiting for the party to kick off.

In Nyanja Mass, the situation was the same as in English Mass as more children were seen entering the Church thereby making the Church building filled to its edges. The overwhelming turnout by the chil-dren during their Christmas party has continued to rise every year.

Immediately after Nyanja Mass, the children were asked to remain in the Church for Bible quiz and other activities organized by their hard working Ani-mators. As the quiz was being conducted, some hungry-looking children, believed to be non-Catholics were heard by this reporter saying, “we have come here to eat and not to have Bible quiz and all these funnies.”

On contributions by SCCs, Lay groups/movements, announced by the Parish Council Secretaries, some of them failed to contribute the required food-stuffs towards the party, as some only managed to contribute what they could

ERROL HICKEY DIES

Founder and proprietor of Radio Phoenix, Mr Errol Thomas Hickey, aged 72 died on Sunday morning, February 26, 2017 at his residence. The death of Mr Hickey has shocked many people including parishioners who have described him as a selfless, friend-ly and generous man.

On Sunday November 22, 2015, the late Mr Errol T. Hickey donated 250 wheel chairs to the people with paralytic challenges within and outside the parish. Delivering his speech during English Mass announcements on that day, Mr Hickey said the 250 wheel chairs were his Christmas present to the people, especially Makeni Parish-ioners. He said it was one way of appreciating them for their endless prayers during his illness. The late Mr Hickey made his speech after returning from India, where he underwent special treatment. He thanked the Parish Priest, Fr K. Mróz, the Assis-tant Priest, Fr Mabvuto, parishioners, and family members for their prayers and support during his illness.

The late Mr Hickey was put to rest on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Leopards Hill Memorial Park in Lusaka. His burial was preceded by a Requiem Mass held at St Ignatius Parish at 10.00 hours, where people from different walks of life were in attendance to pay their last respects to the gal-

lant man. The late Mr Errol Hickey would be remem-bered and missed by a lot of people for his generosity and warmth which was demon-strated through his assis-tance which he rendered to the disadvantaged groups including the physically chal-lenged at the parish, and the country as a whole. The Parish Priest, Fr K. Mróz, the Assistant Priest, Fr Mabvuto and parishioners in general wish to convey their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved

family members of the late Mr Errol T. Hickey and pray to the Almighty God that they remain unwa-vering during this trying moment. MHSRIP

21 BENEFITS OF MAKING THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

The Sign of the Cross is a simple gesture yet a profound expression of faith. We pre-sent benefits of making the Sign of the Cross: 7th benefit: AFFIRM THE TRINITY

In invoking the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we are affirming our belief in a triune God. This is also rein-forced by using three fingers to make the sign, according to Pope Innocent III.

afford, and not as per their listed items. Some Lay Groups/Movements and SCCs that contribut-ed told this reporter that they had difficulties in raising the requested items as most of their com-munity members were unable to contribute, thereby forcing the respective executive mem-bers of such groups to bear the consequences. And those that had completely failed to contribute

cited January as a difficult month to make contribu-tions of any kind due to school fees for their children.

However, thanks to God as most children that were interviewed expressed satisfaction at the way the party was organized. They said they received enough food which made them happy. As per their usual behaviour, most children left the venue of the party immediately after getting their share of food.

Some of them were seen taking their food to their respective homes because their bellies could not accommodate more food than they ate. Despite the overwhelming attendance by the children during their party, the same has not been so impressive during Holy Childhood meetings and Children Mass. The parish, through announcements has on several oc-casions reminded parents and guardians to send their children for the meetings and Mass on the stat-ed days, but this has not changed the situation at the parish.

The Parish Council wishes to thank SCCs, Lay Groups/Movements for their donations, CWL for preparing food during the party, among others.
