The American government defines poverty as a family of four living on an income of less than $ 21,832.

Considering the costs to America of housing, utilities, transportation, food, health care and child care. Even that income seems too small.

The Poverty Line

Thee percentage of children living in poverty has risen drastically in the last ten years especially in the south.

19.0 percent of individuals under age 18 lived in poverty.
