    Inaugural gala dinner in Mexico City November 4th 2015

    For 30 years, The Economist has published The World in..., featuring global trends and predictions about the year ahead. The World in 2016 Gala Dinner, held for the first time in Mexico City on November 4th 2015, will bring the publication to life, for an evening of intellectual entertainment with some of the most high-profile regional and global luminaries for an evening of unmatched intellectual entertainment from The Economist.

    The World in Gala Dinner series is where The Economist and invited speakers share their bold, candid, sometimes shockingand always entertainingpredictions on global issues for the year ahead. Hosted by Daniel Franklin, Executive Editor, The Economist and Editor, The World in..., The World in Gala Dinner evening starts with a cocktail networking opportunity, then is followed by inspiring and thought-provoking predictions over dinner from influential, high-profile figures from politics, business and the arts, and the chance for the audience to participate with a predictions-inspired table quiz. The event brings together high-level and intellectually curious individuals including readers of The Economist, C-suite executives and business leaders, senior representatives from government, leading academics and thinkers.

    7.40 pm: Women in 2016 Channeling the soft side as a hard asset

    Meet Rosie Rios, the 43rd treasurer of the United States and the woman behind the woman on the $10 bill. The new design wont be unveiled until 2020 for the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote, but this is already a historical achievement. Rios, whose signature is featured on all circulating denominations of US paper currency, was one of nine children born to Mexican parents who immigrated to The United Sates in 1958. On a lively and forward-looking fireside chat, the US treasurer nominated by Barack Obama in 2009, is going to talk about her latest triumph and her unwavering commitment to increasing the presence of women in finance and other fields where they are under-represented.

    New technologies will unlock massive streams of data about cities and their inhabitants. Whats the potential to turn every city into a unique civic laboratorya place where technology is adapted in novel ways to meet local needs and to spark collaboration? In this fireside chat, Antanas Mockus, professor-turned-politician who was the mayor of Bogot twice and has been making headlines since then with his philosophical approach to leadership, will share his views on civic engagement and how other cities around the world can replicate grand social experiments to activate cooperation.

    Latin America is now supplying ballet companies worldwide with a fresh crop of brilliant dancers. Indeed, the arts are playing a major role in not only highlighting the regions impressive talent on the global stage, but also channeling that talent to drive social impact in their home countries. In this interview you will hear from the first male Mexican dancer to reach many ballet milestones. Isaac Hernndez is now the lead principal at The English Royal Ballet in London. He has also set up a youth-focused non-profit organisation in Mexico and founded the first free ballet school in the country. Its a long way from his humble upbringing in Guadalajara, where he lived with his parents, former dancers themselves, and ten siblings.
