Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday

Lent is the season of the liturgical calendar that begins with Ash Wednesday (February 26 this year) and ends forty days later on Holy Thursday (April 9 this year). Traditionally, the purpose of Lent is to prepare for Easter through prayer, doing penance, denying physical pleasure, repenting from sin, giving to causes that provide relief for other people, and denying one’s ego needs. May our worship this Lenten season do its quiet, challenging, clarifying work in our lives.

THE LIFE OF THE COMMUNITY Amy MearsMay God be with you. And also with you.Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to God!

CHIMING THE HOUR You are most welcome in this hour of worship. As the hour is chimed, all are invited to apply our attention to preparation for worship. As we become aware of the presence of those gathered electronically from across the nation – in their joy and sadness, their need and their plenty – let us enter into the realization that this hour provides for us an opportunity to encounter the Holy in the presence of this community of faith. May God’s blessing be upon our worship.

Cry hosanna, people of faith! Rejoice and give praise to the Holy!If we did not sing praise, the earth itself would cry out!Cry hosanna, people of faith, for the one who saves draws near to Jerusalem!Hosanna! Jesus the Christ saves us as we choose to follow!Blessed is the one who did not turn back for fear of hatred, nor the forces of separation and evil. Let us praise the Spirit of Holy Love, sharing the courage of the Christ, facing with the strength of community our own paths of faith.Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in God’s name!

HYMN OF PRAISE 192 “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” ST. THEODULPHAll glory, laud, and honor, to you, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring! You are a child of Israel, Great David’s greater son; you ride in lowly triumph, Messiah, blessed one!The company of angels hosannas sing on high, and we with all creation in chorus make reply. The people of the Hebrews with palms before you went, our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present! To you before your passion they sang their hymns of praise, to you, the high exalted, hosannas now we raise. As you received their praises, now hear us as we pray. Since you delight in goodness, rule in our hearts today.

PRAYING THE PSALMS from Psalm 118 Lauren Plummer We give thanks to You, O Beloved, for You are kind; your steadfast love endures forever! We give thanks to You, O Beloved, who answer our prayers and invite us to new Life. The stone which the builders rejected has become the foundation of our lives. This, O Eternal Listener, is your work; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which You have made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!Remain ever by our side, O Friend! Come, live in our hearts as Loving Companion Presence! You are my Beloved, and I will give thanks to You; You are my Beloved, greatly will I praise You!We give thanks to You, O Blessed One, for You are kind; your steadfast love endures forever!

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION April BakerOn Palm Sunday the crowds worshiped Jesus; on Holy Friday they shouted for him to die. Let us who also worship Jesus confess that we, too, sometimes reject him, and ask forgiveness.

Jesus, Messiah, you come to us in peace, but we shut the doors of our minds against you. In your mercy:Forgive us and help us.You come to us in humility, but we prefer our own proud ways. In your mercy:Forgive us and help us.You come to us revealing love, acceptance, and commitment, but we cling to our familiar methods of destruction and separation. In your mercy:Forgive us and help us.You come to us in majesty, but we will not have you to lead us, to rule us. In your mercy:Forgive us and help us. Forgive, O Jesus the Christ, our empty praise; fill our hearts with your love; come to us and make our lives embodied examples of Love, Kindness, and Peace. Amen.

Prayer Response “Our Sad Regret” LITTLE MARLBOROUGH

Silence is kept

Assurance of GraceThe good news is that as we face ourselves and the Holy with the awareness of our need, we are given grace to grow and courage to continue the journey. Beloved friends, hear this good news: you are loved, you are forgiven. Be at peace.

SOLO “Hosanna” SchlosserWave the palm branches and lift up your voice; shout to the heavens, come dance and rejoice. Look! He is coming: Messiah and King. Hail, Son of David! Hosannas we sing: Hosanna! Daughter of Zion, your Victor behold: royalty riding the back of a colt. Blessed is He! Lift your voices and shout; if we keep silent, the rocks will cry out: Hosanna! Shout aloud to our King! Your power has no limit; your reign has no end. Your greatness! We sing it again and again. You are our Healer, our Savior, our Friend. Hosanna! You are the King!

Sharing the Plate and the Cup Together

HYMN 212 “In Suffering Love” MORNING SONG

In suffering love the thread of life is woven through our care, For God is with us: not alone our pain and toil we bear.

There is a rock, a place secure within the storm’s cold blast;Concealed within the suffering night God’s covenant stands fast.

In love’s deep womb our fears are held, there God’s rich tears are sownAnd bring to birth, its hope newborn, the strength to journey on.

Christ, to our hearts your joy commit, into our hands your pain;So send us out to touch the world with blessings in your name.

In suffering love our God comes now, hope’s vision born in gloom; With tears and laughter shared and blessed the desert yet will bloom.

HOMILY April Baker

SOLO “From Bethany, the Teacher Comes” KING’S LYNNDon Schlosser, baritone

From Bethany, the Teacher Comes down Mt. Olive’s slope, and all the world is singing a glad new song of hope;Cry out, O stately cedars, along the rugged way! Ye vineyards, shout hosanna to greet this happy day! The Reign of Love, in triumph rides through the city’s gate; rejected, scorned—yet Victor, the Conqueror of hate; O wave your green palm branches! Exalt the matchless worth! This Reign of Love shall conquer the nations of the earth. Not of this world the kindom; the rule is from above; the realm is of the spirit, the scepter—Truth and Love; The mission is to service, the banner is unfurled; with joy we follow Jesus to overcome the world.

UNISON RESPONSEO God of a Thousand Faces, who sees through all our pretenses to the silent, secret space within, where our true spirit sojourns, prune away the duplicities that mask our best intentions and all those quick defenses that disguise who we really are. Open us up to Love and to all who would touch the Truth of our being, so all may see the integrity of lives given over to Love. Amen.

HYMN OF RESPONSE “Made One in Christ, We Gather” PASSION CHORALE

Made one in Christ, we gather with followers near and far. Our week begins with worship, recalling whose we are: For Sunday is the Birth Day from which our hopes derive, the Easter Day, the First Day, when Christ returns alive.

From Monday into Tuesday, wherever you may be, remember Jesus teaching and saying, “Follow me,” With love, befriending, healing, that makes our spirits thrive, and grounds the joy of Sunday, when Christ returns alive.

Take stock of life on Wednesday, and measure every aim by Jesus’ faithful journey towards Jerusalem. Our anxious urge to prosper, succeed, and long survive, fades in the glow of Sunday when Christ returns alive.

Recall on Friday evening, when Jesus’ work was done, the wisdom, love and courage by which your hope was won. The hour of death and sadness can never quite contrive to steal the joy of Sunday when Christ returns alive.

On Saturday, be willing to taste the in-between, suspended in the stillness of things unheard, unseen.

BENEDICTION RESPONSE “Love Unbounded” DIVINUM MYSTERIUM

SILENCE IS KEPTIn the quiet, all are invited to consider how Spirit has been revealed in this hour. Please remain in reverent expectation during the Postlude as you discover ways to transition from this hour of worship into your own life of service in the world, seeking where God is at work and how you might continue your worship by joining in.

Glendale Happy Hour with SummerGlentern Summer Hyche invites you to stay connected in the zoom room right now for a 15-minute conversation about things that are comforting, sustaining, pleasing, or exciting you during this season. You can participate in the chat thread (click on the little conversation bubble icon at the bottom of the screen) or unmute yourself and speak. Bring your happies and give other Glendalers more reasons to smile as they connect with the faith community.

Concerning WorshipIn our worship, Glendale recognizes the theological importance of ways language is used. We do not attempt to change every historical reading, anthem, and hymn in each service; we do try, over time, to balance cultural and gender references to include all persons in the worship of God. Please feel free to use inclusive language during worship. The lyric “How Long, O God, How Long?” is written by Thomas H. Troeger 1995 Chalice Press. Godly Play® is a registered trademark of the Godly Play Foundation, the Rev. Jerome Berryman, founder. The Unison Response is adapted from Miriam Therese Winter, 20th-century American Catholic liturgist. “Made One in Christ, We Gather” is written by Brian Wren 1996 Hope Publishing Company, used by permission.

“How Long, O God” TroegerHow long, O God, how long? The ancient cry is ours. We wait in grief and ask how long before we feel your powers. And why, O God, and why? We ask with every age and throw against your distant sky the force of grief and rage. The cross, O God, the cross! We think about your Son: you know the weight and edge of loss, your tears and ours are one. Your hand, O God, your hand! We need your hand to hold, to walk this hard, uncharted land where solid meanings fold. We trust, O God, we trust in time our grief shall mend, transformed by love that shaped our dust, your love that knows no end.

PREPARING FOR NEXT SUNDAY’S WORSHIPYOU’LL WANT TO HAVE A BELL TO RING DURING THE HOSANNAS NEXT WEEK DURING

EASTER WORSHIP.

Special Called Business MeetingFrom the Leadership Council: We will have a Special Called Business Meeting on April 8 at 6:30 PM during our Wednesday Conversation Zoom call. The purpose of the meeting is to vote on a group of new members.

Lenten Offering – We will be gathering funds for the 40 days of Lent to send through our ministry partners at the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America/Bautistas por la Paz toward relief and rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico. Recent earthquake and not-so-recent hurricane damage has left Puerto Rico in need of good partners. BPFNA/BplP interim director Doris Garcia Rivera has encouraged our congregations to participate in an offering that will make possible clean water; food; tent shelters; hygiene items for babies, children, and adults; and other direct-care needs. Please mark contributions beyond your regular giving for Glendale “Puerto Rico Offering” on the memo line.

Storytime for Kids and FamiliesGlendaler Klem-Marí Cajigas Chimelis, who works for Nashville Public Library, will hold a weekly zoom story hour for young and formerly young folks. Alan Green will send the link on Wednesday mornings; the story time will begin at 11:00am each Wednesday. Gather around the screen to watch, read, and listen as Klem-Marí brings us stories from around the world.

Centering Prayer Fridays at NoonEach Friday at noon during our spatial distancing from one another, Glendaler Johnny Sears, Director of the Upper Room’s Academies of Spiritual Formation, will be leading a zoom session of Centering Prayer. He will offer some helps at the beginning of each session for those who are newer to the practice, then hold 10 minutes of Centering Prayer, and close with a benediction. If you’re a rookie or a novice to Centering Prayer, here is a helpful primer: 8
