Worst Craps bet

If you've been involved in any way in the playing of craps, you'll know that at its core the game is really just a conglomeration of different bets being played at different times. A good craps strategy isn't really strategy at all. Rather, it's knowing which bets to make at which time and in what proportion.

In essence, a good approach to playing craps focuses on the essential element of probability. That where your winnings are to be had, it's way you find your best chances of increasing your bankroll, and it's where the real juice of the casino's lifeblood lies. The odds at craps are akin to the incline of a hill. The higher the house advantage, the steeper the hill. The lower the house advantage, the greater potential distance you can cover with the same effort.

The analogy isn't perfect, but the principle remains. Why would you consciously and knowingly subject yourself to a gradient that's steeper than necessary? In other words, why create more work for yourself when similar results can be achieved more efficiently? Obviously, we’d need to acknowledge that there are multiple factors at work here. But the fundamental idea is true.

So, with that in mind, let's look at the bet that is categorically considered the worst to make. This bet carries with it an abnormally high casino advantage. In fact, in some states in the US, bets with even better odds than this bet are banned by the local gambling commission. They traverse the line between profit and extortion.

On the face of it, this might seem like an alluring bet. But, we assure you it's not. The main reason you're a disadvantage with this wager is because it's a one-round only bet. That means that although there is a relatively high chance of rolling seven given the varying dice combinations that can all add up to seven, there's also a significant disadvantage seeing as you're competing against all the other number combinations in just one roll.

Any seven proposition

From the casino's perspective, the player places are bet on an any seven proposition will lose on average 20 times faster than a player who plays the pass line. The bottom line is that smart players avoid the any seven bets, not because they like excitement, and not because they don’t induce a thrill and a rush. But simply because they’re bad bets to make.

Any seven proposition

Let's leave you with an image. You're sitting on a racetrack, about to make the 300-metre dash. You want to win. Everybody wants to win. Being the runner with the pass line means you're running with about 1 kg in each hand. Sure, it's a bit of extra weight, but it's not something that's going to stop you.

However, if you’re the runner with the any seven proposition, it's as though you have almost 17 kg weighing you down. It doesn't matter how fast your natural running ability, when you’re weighed down significantly enough it’s going to slow you down enormously. We say, hold onto your bankroll as long as possible, stay away from bets with a senseless disadvantage, and keep running as hard as you can.
