Back in early andmid-February, I wasalready starting to thinkabout what I was goingto put on the frontcover. I usually usesomething from currentNASA events. Whathad caught myattention was Dawnentering orbit aroundthe dwarf planet Ceresand I figured NASAwould have some greatpictures, with at leastone of them beingeye-catching enough toland on our front coverthis issue. (The imageI would’ve used isinstead included inhere.)
Then the newsbroke on Feb 27 ofLeonard Nimoy’s passing and Iknew that I immediately needed to
change plans. After thinkingthrough ideas over the last few
weeks, I was inspiredby an editorial cartoonmy grandfather hadsent me. The quotewas perfect and wasquickly chosen for thefront cover. To givefull credit: Randy Bish’swork appears in the(Pittsburgh) TribuneReview and while Ican’t reprint the originalwork in the newsletter,I did find it on-line. (Asyou’ll see in the linkedpage, there’s anoticeable reason that Ididn’t try to use it onour front cover.)
In making this afitting tribute, I thoughtabout who could writea nice piece aboutNimoy, which led to a
quick call to Brad McDonald, withthe idea of asking if he could write

A View From the Catbird SeatBy J.R. Fisher
First I would liketo thank everyonewho made it tothe UNC-TVtelethon earlierthis month. It isalways so nice to
see everyone together pulling inthe same direction. We really needto get serious about recruiting forthe ship as it has been severalyears since we actually had 20people on the set and had anopportunity to talk aboutSTARFLEET. The other side ofthat is we still do not have peoplein uniform for this or any otherevent. Uniforms make a big visualimpression on people that can be
very positive. Crystal Coast Conwas a good example of that.Developing good programs thatcan be presented at these events(while in uniform) is somethingelse to be undertaken.
While I was not at the recentevent in Raleigh, I hope there willbe a lengthy report/article on whattranspired there and our role in it.[Editor’s note: the article is onpage 9.] Things like that need tobe addressed early on andindependent of otherorganizations.
Warm weather is going to bewith us soon and hopefully thisyear we will have some volunteersto host a cookout or two.
Keep up the good work withthe scripts and recordings. I trulylook forward to hearing the entireprogram one day soon. Everyoneshould be giving some thought towriting articles for our newsletter.Especially department heads.
With all that we do have goingon, I think there should be a pushto get more members into uniform. For some of us it might be assimple as losing a few pounds sothat the old ones actually fit again. It would be nice to have a crewpicture at my retirement witheveryone in uniform. ☺

something for the newsletter. Hebeat me to the punch -- an articlewas already well underway. Many, many thanks to Brad for writingabout his encounters with Nimoy. Thanks also go to Larry Cox who, unknowingly, added to the Nimoytribute with his selection of imagesto use in this month’s article aboutStar Trek On-Line.
In looking at StarFleet’s website for various things, I got side-tracked in looking at the list ofmembership benefits -- whichdoes include discounts on Trekuniforms and related items fromCosplaySky and CosplaySupplies. In checking out both web sites, theprices look fairly decent.CosplaySky lists the “monstermaroon” from movies II to VI at ahundred bucks for the jacket andpants, which isn’t bad consideringwhat’s included. They hand-makeeither standard-sized uniforms orcustom-fit to measurements thathave to be included in the order.CosplaySupplies appears to haveonly standard sizes, and wasrunning low on most uniformswhen I looked. Either way, though, this give us a possibility ofbuying a uniform without having toget a loan to afford it.
Showing how late I’m runningwith this issue, I can mention therecent launch of the next crew tothe space station. While this is astandard three-person crew, twoof them (an astronaut and acosmonaut) will spend a full yearon the station to study the effectsof extended weightlessness on thehuman body. The astronaut’s twinbrother -- who recently retired fromthe astronaut corps -- is alsoparticipating in the research.NASA will compare the twins tosee how the year in space affectsthe human body. Most of theeffects of simply aging should beable to be “negated” with havingone twin in space and the other onthe ground.
Farther out, Opportunity hasjust finished a marathon -- 26.2miles -- in its travels on theMartian surface during the lasteleven-plus years. Not bad for arover that was “supposed” to lastonly three months.
Looking at NASA’s work ongetting humans to Mars (andbeyond), a major test for theSpace Launch System (SLS) wassuccessfully completed in the firsthalf of March. (Side note: checkout another viewing angle andlook at how strongly they had toanchor the booster to the teststand during the test fire -- it’s gota lot of power.) The boosterplanned for use as part of the SLSis a beefed-up version of theshuttle’s solid rocket booster, withan extra segment added toprovide additional thrust. Thislatest test was a full two-minuteburn, which matches what theboosters will do during launch. There’s one more test to perform, then pieces for two boosters willbe shipped to Kennedy SpaceCenter for the first SLS flight.
I did a little research on thelocal “Comic Con” events sincethere were several with thatbanner. I found the other two thatI’d heard about. One appears tono longer use “Comic Con” -- theOak City Comic Show. It runssemiannually, with the next one inmid-August. The other is NCComicon in mid-November. Fromwhat I read in comments aboutWizard World’s event, these othertwo are likely cheaper.
I also went back to the webpage for Wizard World’s Raleighappearance and discovered thatthe dates have been changed --and now indicate a 2016 return, with specific dates TBD.
As for the just-held ComicCon, I’m saving of my tales forelsewhere in this issue. However, there is one bit of confusion toclear up in this space: Star Trek
New Voyages: Phase II is now aseparate group from (Star Trek)Axanar. I think we’ve all beenblending the names together -- Icertainly have. What I heard atComic Con was that one of thepeople leading the Axanar workused to work with New Voyages, but has split-off to work only onAxanar. Both are definitely highquality productions and I think it’sgood that they can both work ondifferent parts of the general TOStime frame and each group canfocus its attention on the storylines they’ve chosen.
The New Voyages folks areplanning to film their next episodethis coming July in upstate NewYork, which is where the executiveproducer has built all the sets. Ina recent news update they’ve sentme, they’re having to recast theUhura role. (This is common dueto the cast members gettingpaying jobs that take priority.)From their call sheet for Uhura --
It is shot in upstate NewYork, and the ExecutiveProducer is looking forsomeone to come on as aregular and for the upcomingshoot in July.If you are interested or know
someone who might be,please forward this post andhave them contact MarkEdward Lewis or JamesCawley directly via Facebook.Just so we're clear, this isn't
for money -- it's for your love ofGene's IDIC world. You'll getIMDB credit of course, andwork with some great folks andeven the odd guest star. If youlove how Hortas are sentient, that bridge proximity alert isNOT Red Alert, and that thecharacter whose middle nameis Tiberious likes to shoot firstand ask questions later...Please send a HEADSHOT,and REEL to James Cawley orMark Edward Lewis.

The recent passing of
Leonard Nimoy has prompted
me to reflect on my personal
experiences with him.
We met twice, both times at
N.C. State University. The first
meeting occurred was while I
was a graduate student in
1977. One of the three
part-time jobs I was holding at
the time was at Stewart Theater
on campus. They offered many
types of entertainment from
movies to stage productions
and even guest lectures. When
Mr. Nimoy was scheduled to be
a guest, I was already known
as a die-hard Trek fan by
everyone. So everyone was
kind enough to let me take the
position of stage manager
during his appearance. In that
position, I would take care of
the talent (Mr. Nimoy), be sure
that all was well with the
arrangements for refreshments,
stage equipment, sound, lights
and to be with him before and
after the performance.
Basically, I was to be a
personal assistant for the
evening! I know, it was a tough
job, but somebody had to do it,
right?
My good fortune didn’t end
there. I found out that I had
also been selected to be part of
the official reception committee.
This meant picking him up at
the airport and taking him to the
hotel, then spend the evening
touring the town and campus!
However, the experience of
a lifetime started out on a bad
note. In the entire history of
commercial aviation, we had a
first. The flight arrived thirty
minutes early! The reception
committee arrived with
transportation and couldn’t find
the guest! In those days,
airport terminals wide open to
anyone, so we looked
everywhere! Then we had him
paged. It was rather humorous
to watch the reactions of people
after hearing, “Paging Mr.
Leonard Nimoy.”
After much running around,
we finally located him, sitting in
a limousine, waiting patiently.
We told him we’d give him a
free ride but he was already
loaded up and ready to go. At
this point he didn’t want to
bother transferring his luggage
and self. We told him we’d
meet at the hotel, the Velvet
Cloak Inn in Raleigh, which was
close to the campus. So he
took the limousine and we left
in our state-supplied van; not
much of a choice after all I
suppose.
At the Velvet Cloak, my luck
turned even worse. We lost
him again. The room he was
assigned to wasn’t up to spec
and when we went to find him,
he was gone. After a brief hunt
we found him in another room.
He laughed about the multiple
mix-ups and it was there that I
learned about his infectious
laugh and wonderful sense of
humor.
Once inside the room, he
asked to skip the planned tour.
I was disappointed, but
understood. He was probably
tired from his trip and just
wanted to relax. Instead, he
asked if we would mind sitting
with him while he watched
Roots. He was supposed to be
in the movie, but his busy
schedule would not permit it.
However, he wanted to see the
movie due to a genuine interest
in the project.
Accordingly, we watched the
movie for the next few hours.
During commercial breaks, he
made numerous calls to family,
friends, producers, agents and
so on. We tried not to listen,
but during one call he began
laughing out loud. After the
call, he explained that
Paramount was thinking about
making a Star Trek movie but
wanted Paul Newman and
Robert Redford to play Kirk and
Spock! We all got a laugh out

My Memories of Leonard NimoyBy Brad McDonald
of that but that wasn’t the
reason he was amused. Flip
Wilson had contacted
Paramount and wanted to be in
the movie. For those of you
who don’t know who Flip is, he
was noted for his comedy show
and a number of characters,
including Geraldine, a very hip
lady. Flip wanted to play
Uhura! We had an even bigger
laugh at that, but I think our
committee became some of the
first people to learn of the
proposed Star Trek movie.
After Roots concluded, we
went out to eat at a nearby
restaurant, Darryl’s. During
dinner, we told Mr. Nimoy about
RTP, NC State, Raleigh and
North Carolina in general. After
some time, he told us how
impressed he was with the area
and then complemented us and
the people of North Carolina.
He had been recognized while
there and many people had
stopped by to talk or for an
autograph. He explained that,
usually when introduced,
people would generally ask
where his ears were. Not a
single person had done so
since arriving in Raleigh. He
was so impressed that he
picked up the tab for all of us!
On the way out the door, a
few rowdy drunks were coming
in. One of the waitresses
yelled out, “Hey you guys, that’s
Mr. Spock from Star Trek!”
One of them eyed Mr.
Nimoy through glazed eyes and
commented, “Oh yeah, where’s
his ears?”
Turning back to me, he just
shrugged his shoulders and
commented, “Oh well, it was
nice while it lasted.”
The next evening at the
theater, before the show, we
spent a lot of time talking about
mutual interests such as poetry,
photography, Star Trek,
Mission Impossible and just
about everything else. I
showed him some of my work
and he was very comple-
mentary and encouraging. This
is when I found out how really
great the man was. He didn’t
play the “big star” with little time
for fans with questions about
their work. Instead, he took the
time to read a few items and
smiled warmly, “Keep up the
good work, and don’t get
discouraged.”
The second meeting didn’t
last as long, but was just as
memorable. I was a teacher at
the time and had a Science
Fiction Club for the students
who were interested. When I
learned that Mr. Nimoy was
returning to Stewart Theater, I
arranged a field trip for the club.
It was great! We
reconnected briefly after his
lecture and he remembered
me. Considering how many
people he had met between our
two encounters, I thought that
was quite remarkable. I told
him I wasn’t much of an author
as I was still unpublished.
He admonished me slightly
by pointing a finger at me and
saying, “You are an author
whether you’re published or not
and don’t forget it.”
I never have.
I kept writing and still do.
I’m still unpublished, other than
the Kitty Hawk newsletter, but I
don’t mind. Now, I just write for
personal enjoyment and as a
means of relaxing.
However, I always
remember the words of
encouragement from my
favorite Vulcan. A very nice
person and a gentleman in
every sense of the word; I have
no doubt that he will be missed
greatly by a remarkably large
number of people all over the
world.
And he will live long and
prosper, in our hearts and
minds.

Ambassador Spock memorial on Vulcan
Upon entering the DeltaQuadrant, a myriad of options areavailable for Captains toparticipate in, with manycontinuing story lines thatoriginated in the Voyager serieswith familiar locations andcharacters.
For the 5th anniversary of STOin January, a special episode was
introduced which brought togetherEnsign Kim and his “alter-ego”character. With my bicycle ac-cident, the holidays and one thingand another (including technicalglitches in-game) I’ve not spent agreat deal of time in this quadrantbut look forward to getting moreinvolved.
Also included in thenew season are moreoptions for characterdevelopment includingenhanced R&D devel-opment, character traitsand skills as well as morecrew options, both forbridge and duty officers.
The late LeonardNimoy contributed hisvoice acting to the earlystages of STO in thecharacter of AmbassadorSpock. With his death lastmonth, the gamedevelopers have honoredboth the man and hischaracter with permanent
memorials to Ambassador Spockon Vulcan and New Romulus.
Also in conjunction with hisdeath, the developers have alsoadded a memorial on EarthStation to those actors from TOSwho have already left us; a verytouching tribute.

[Editor’s note: this is a mix ofreports from four of us who were atComic Con, with everyone’scomments merged in mostlychronological order.]
John: This being my first ComicCon -- and my first con of any sort inmany years -- I wasn’t exactly sure ofwhat to expect. Sure, I’ve heard aboutthe big Comic Con every year in SanDiego. This one in Raleigh certainlylived up to that in one respect -- therewere characters from all across theswath of SciFi, fantasy, gaming, cartoons, and (naturally) the comics.I’ve included a couple of pics here, butthe full set will be posted to the photoarchive on the Kitty Hawk web site asmy time permits in April.
We teamed up with the Star TrekNew Voyages: Phase II folks to helpthem out. They ran a panel onSaturday afternoon and showed theirlatest episode at the Marbles IMAX onSunday. They gave the Kitty Hawkthree of the free passes they got forrunning the panel, which allowed Brad,Larry, and me to do some recruiting.
Unfortunately, we all found out atnearly the last minute that WizardWorld wouldn’t give a complementarybooth for running the panel. Thislimited our visibility at the Con andended up scaling back the time we putin. (Had we had a booth, I would’vebeen there the whole time. In the end,I did just most of Saturday and theIMAX screening on Sunday.)
Brad: I attended Friday night withLarry Cox and we shared a ride, wiseconsidering the $7.00 parking fee.Attendance was fairly light on the firstday which gave Larry and I anexcellent chance to scope out thevendors, schedules and set up. Afterresolving a bit of a mix-up on ourpasses, we went in and did a ‘tour ofthe tables.’ Ironically, since it was a‘comic con,’ there were only threevendors selling comic books. However, there were many art andt-shirt vendors and a few ‘uniqueboutiques’. It was well organized;obviously they have done this before. After less than two hours, we hadpretty much seen it all, as there were
no panels or special features that wewere interested in (or could afford), weleft.
Larry: I enjoyed going. Of coursethe free pass helped greatly. But thatnotwithstanding, I think with theregular admission price I'd stillconsider it an enjoyable experience. But not the celebrity events, which areway out of my budget.
I attended Friday, shortly after theopening so the crowd wasn't huge, which is good and bad; good in thatthe crowd wasn't huge: bad because alot of costumed attendees weren'tthere.
I would certainly considerattending in the future; having anevent like this in Raleigh is nice and I'dlike to continue to support it.
Brad: Saturday, John Troan and Ishared a ride and, thanks to mydaughter’s warning, we left extra earlyand avoided a traffic problem.Somebody had scheduled the con and
St. Patrick’s Day parade on the sameday. Downtown Raleigh hadbarricades on many of the mainarteries, which caused a problem for anumber of attendees. John and I hadplanned for this and he did somereading while I worked on the nextstory for the newsletter. By the timewe did get in, there was a rather largecrowd and people kept coming in allday. We walked through and‘snagged’ anyone in a StarTrek-themed uniform or costume.Hopefully, with the number of peptalks and sign-up forms we gave out,we’ll see some new members. I had a

budget for the event and stayed fairlyclose. My expenses were limited toparking, eating and two autographs. While I could not afford Shatner orTennant, and I didn’t know themajority of the other celebs, I washappy to meet Hercules and Elvira. Both were very friendly and sincethere weren’t many other peopleseeking them out, I had extendedconversations with both. (More on thatat the next meeting.)
Diane: I think the most impressivething about the Comic Con was thecomic book artists and illustrators. When you stopped to talk to them, they were more than willing to talk andshow off their work. I had theopportunity to talk to Michael Goldenan artist for "The Walking Dead"Comic. It was a great talk and I cameaway with an understanding of the hisprocess.
Brad: John and I met a lot offriendly fans and all went fairly well.Attendance at the Star Trek Phase IIpanel wasn’t as large as I had hopedfor, but the people were friendly, informative and made a goodpresentation.
John: In talking with my maincontact for Star Trek New Voyages, the panel was cut down in size a littledue to some unique circumstances insetting up the panel attendees. Wedid hear some interesting nuggetsduring the panel: They operate purely on avolunteer-and-donations effort. They can’t make any money for theirproduction -- no one else can either-- to stay in Paramount’s goodgraces. All of the cast and crew aredoing this at personal cost and time.
Executive producer James Cawleystarted his “professional” Trekcareer with an internship at TNGunder William Theiss. When Theisspassed away, Cawley wasbequeathed the entirety of Theiss’Trek collection. Cawley was alsothe first to play Kirk in the series, buthas since stepped aside. (Smallfoot note, Cawley earns a living asan Elvis impersonator -- anddefinitely looks the part.)
They have the only set of TOS blue-prints known to still exist and areusing them to build the entirecollection of sets as they existed onthe Desilu sound stage in 1968 --including a 360O bridge and the fulltwo-level engineering set.
Several Trek alumni have appearedon screen (Walter Koenig, GeorgeTakei, Grace Lee Whitney) orcontributed off-screen (DougDrexler, D.C. Fontana, DavidGerrold) during the series’ run thusfar. (I double-checked againstIMDB to be sure I had correctlyremembered the names, and founda few other Trek alumni listed, too.)One interesting thing during the
panel was the two video clips theyshowed: Going Boldly (their fourthvignette) and the first few minutes ofMind-Sifter (the ninth full episode). We got just enough of a “teaser” whetour appetites for the full episode onSunday morning at the Marbles IMAX.
Brad: Sadly, I had to miss theSunday show at Marbles due to familyobligations. Overall, I’d say it was
good. The only criticism [aboutComic Con] came from just abouteverybody: way too expensive!
John: Mind-Sifter was really good.Seeing it on the IMAX was incredible.Other than having new people in thefamiliar roles, it could’ve been part ofTOS season 4. I found the story to bevery believable. In chatting with theNew Voyages folks afterwards, theywere very happy with the turnout for a9 a.m. start (about 60-some people)and how it looked on such a hugescreen. (They posted some pictureson the event’s Facebook pageshowing just how big this IMAX screenis. Six-foot-tall people are tiny whenstanding in front of the screen.)
