CAULFIELD JUST MISS WITH GREAT'LAST QUARTERPARADE, COBURG FAIL TO CLINCH PLACESHopes yet for St. Bernard's, Blues, Nort h

By GEORGE MeTAGGART

Caulfield Grammarians, after trailing Ormond by 45 points at three-quarter-time, put in a great last quarter effort in the game at Elsternwick Park lastSaturday and went down by only five points .

Old Paradians and Coburg, third and four respectively, missed the goldenopportunity they both had of clinching their places in the four, and will nowhave to fight for the right to play off in the finals .

St . Bernard's (who beat Parade last week), University Blues and NorthOld Boys must still be considered as possible contenders .

Ormond's greater adaptability to thestrong windy conditions and their bet-ter scouting gave them the edge onCaulfield in the early stages and theylooked set for an easy win at thestart of the last quarter .

They kept Caulfield scoreless in thefirst term and although Caulfield putin a strong second quarter they wereastray in their kicking - four goalsfrom 15 shots - while Ormond kickedtwo valuable goals against the windto lead by 11 points at the interval .

Ormond went right on with thejob in the third, when they added 6 .5to 1 .1, but faded out in the final termwhen they failed to score . Caulfieldplugged away at goal relentlessly butthey had given Ormond too much start .

Parade looked to have St . Bern-ard's measure when they rattled on7.9 to nothing in the second quarterto gain a 17-point lead, but St . Ber-nard's hit back with 7 goals in thethird term and then kicked 4 .9 againstthe wind to Parade's 1 .1 in the lastto run out winners by more than 8goals .

Monash Blues' 6-goal burst in thesecond quarter paved the way fortheir win over Coburg. They were37 points in front at half-time and

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - August

Coburg made little impression on themin the second half and were beatenby 32 points .

De La Salle surprised UniversityBlues in the first half, when they ledby 15 points, but the Blues tookcharge after that, with 6 goals in thethird quarter and 8 in the last toscore a run-away win .

North Old Boys broke away fromMelbourne High when they kicked 9goals in the second term and althoughHigh replied with the same number inthe third, North finished too stronglyand won by 3 goals .

Ormond's win over Caulfield tookthem to the top rung of the ladder butCaulfield are in no danger of losingsecond place . These two are the logicalGrand Finalists .

University Blacks almost certainlyassured themselves of top place whenthey scored .a resounding win over OldScotch. The margin was nearly 8goals .

Old Trinity lost their place in thefour when they suffered a 33-pointdefeat by Kew, who seem to make ahabit of upsetting teams higher onthe ladder .

Trinity only just got squeezed outof the four, however, for Ivanhoe,

who have taken their place, scrapedhome from Collegians by 4 points .

Tooronga-Malvern showed improvedform in playing a drawn game withOld Carey, and although Geelong beatUni . High by a big margin, U.H.S .made them earn their goals .

Power House continued their badrun when they went down to OldHaileybury by 2 goals . Assumptionalso suffered a shock defeat, NationalBank beating them by 15 points .

It was only remarkably accuratekicking by St . Kilda CBC (16 .2) whichenabled them to beat Fairfield (13 .17)by 3 points . Reservoir continued theirunbeaten run with a big win overCommonwealth Bank and Old Xaver-ians easily beat Old Melburnians .

Brunswick scraped home by a goalfrom St. Pat's, and Old Geelong ranParkside to 2 goals . Hampton Roversscored an upset win over LaTrobeBlacks, the margin being 15 points, and St . Kevin's crushed Alphington tothe tune of more than 12 goals, greatlyweakening Alphington's chances ofgetting into the four .

Marcellin had only 8 points tospare over Glenhuntly, whose poorshooting for goal didn't help . StateSavings Bank beat Old Ivanhoe by 5points, and again bad kicking mayhave cost Old Ivanhoe the game .

AJAX's hopes of making the fourreceived a jolt when they went downto ANZ Bank by more than 6 goals .

Old Camberwell, still unbeaten, had17 points to spare from Old Menton-ians and St. Bede's were beaten by28 points by Monash Whites . NorthBrunswick, still hoping to play in thefinals, nearly ruined their chanceswhen they beat the bottom team, La-Trobe Reds, by only 7 points .

In Junior matches, Power Housescored a big win over Ormond, whodropped down to fourth. House wonby almost 9 goals. In Section 2, NorthOld Boys settled Tooronga-Malvern'shopes, beating them by 28 points .Caulfield Grammar were no match forUniversity Blues who won by ove r12 goals .

Page 4

Most interest in the Reserves wereCoburg's easy win over MonashBlues, Old Scotch's 3-goal win overUniversity Blacks, Power House'sclose call over Old Haileybury andSt. Kilda CBC's easy win against Fair-field . Parkside beat Old Geelong by32 points, bottom team Glenhuntlybeat Marcellin by 4 points, Old Ivan-hoe crushed State Savings Bank by50 points (10.9 to 2 .7) and Old Camber-well beat Old Mentonians by morethan 10 goals .

UMPIRES CORNE REvery umpire on the list is expected

to be at the "Delphic" Alfred PlaceCity - on Monday, August 21st, forour annual dinner . This is the onenight in the year when we have thepleasure of meeting and entertainingour friends in the V.A.F .A. and alsofrom many other football competitions .

Dinner will be served at 6 .30 p .m .This is earlier than in previous yearsso don't be late .

The writer was recently a guest ata past and present players dinner heldby the National Bank Football Club .A most enjoyable evening was high-lighted by an excellent talk on fitnessby former Melbourne High playerDavid Parkin .David impressed on those present

the old adage "You only play as youtrain". Evidently all P.T. men thinkon the same lines .

Tomorrow is the golf day at Tor-quay, to be followed by a bar-b-que atthe home of David Dressing's parents .

We want as many as possible toattend even if you can't swing a club, come along and give the family aday's outing.

Umpires who enjoy their hot soupafter training each night, are mostappreciative of the generosity of PeterFeil who each season donates manycans of soup .

Peter, a very quiet man, is one ofour silent workers . I doubt very muchif many umpires know of Peter'sthoughtful donation .

LOOKING BACK(By Noel Rundle)

5 Years Ago - 1967University Blacks (9 .16) defeated

Kew (6 .14) to take that team's place inthe 'A' section four . Collegians andCoburg were both in the fight for thefour .

`B' section four was settled -Ormond, U .H.S . Old Boys, Uni Blues,N.M .C .B .C .O .B. (now North Old Boys)but all were in the fight for the toptwo positions .
