We have reached a critical moment in the life of the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, with the Concert Hall celebrating its 30th Anniversary last year and the Theatre Royal looking forward to its 150th Anniversary in 2015, but as a result both venues are now in need of significant refurbishment and modernisation. However it is also a critical moment as in recent years we have greatly improved our trading performance and are now operating with no direct subsidy from the City Council. Instead, with the support of the City Council and, hopefully, grants from UK and European funding bodies, we are able to start investing in a very extensive programme of improvements and additions to the building, designed to improve the facilities for the benefit of our audiences, customers and clients – your comfort, relaxation and ease of access. In the Royal Concert Hall this summer we will be installing a second lift and, with the Big Red Seat Appeal in place, will over time be replacing all the 2,200 seats, but our plans go much further than that, ranging from a lift for the Theatre Royal and new seating there, to the remodelling of the Concert Hall Entrance Foyer and Box Office, an increase in café and bar areas, the creation of more meeting and hospitality spaces and the development of the external roof terraces. We also need to ensure that the venues are up to date, fit for purpose and have a sustainable future and in fact with the support of we will be undertaking a major programme of energy conservation measures that will greatly reduce our carbon footprint at the same time as significantly improving audience comfort. So this really is a turning point for the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall and we will be keeping you up to date with further developments as they happen. If you are already a customer then many thanks for your support, if not then hopefully you soon will be. All our audiences should now be able to look forward to a more comfortable, accessible, and welcoming experience.

Thursday 23 – Saturday 25 MayMr Bugg Presents in co-production with the New Wolsey Theatre in association with The Lowry

Miss Nightingale – the burlesque musical by Matthew Bugg

Sex, scandal and showbiz in 1940s LondonYorkshire lass Maggie Brown has moved to London in search of fame and fortune – auditioning at every cabaret bar, with her songwriter George, but nobody wants their act. Everything changes though when Maggie and George are picked up by the charming and wealthy nightclub owner Sir Frank. Soon ‘Miss Nightingale’ explodes onto the stage, shocking society with her outrageous outfits and saucy songs and taking the West End by storm. Featuring 20 original numbers performed by a band of actor musicians and starring burlesque bombshell Amber Topaz, Miss Nightingale – the burlesque musical brings the vintage glamour of war-torn London thrillingly to life. ‘A nightclubby, Blitzy, wartime, blackout romance of gin, gents and garter belts… the songs are terrific’ The Times‘Amber Topaz plays the heroine with great panache proving both sexy and touching’ The TelegraphWatch trailer at www.missnightingale.co.ukRecommended 12+

Propeller in association with The Touring Partnership presents

The Taming of the Shrew Fri 31 May 7.30pm, Sat 1 June 2pm

‘I am not what I am’One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. With a man playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality are almost indistinguishable. Dark and delightful, the play asks

‘What happens when you fall in love with the wrong person?’ and the answer is both beautiful and bittersweet. In The Taming of the Shrew two disguised, competing suitors clamour for the hand of beautiful Bianca, whilst gold digging Petruchio agrees to wed her viciously ill-tempered sister Kate sight-unseen. The difference between marrying for love and marrying for money, however, becomes increasingly difficult to judge. One thing is certain – nobody does Shakespeare like Edward Hall’s Propeller.

‘Utterly beautiful’ ★★★★★ Whatsonstage (current tour)‘Boisterous and inventive... knuckle-duster Shakespeare that digs for the harshness beneath the lyricism. Funny, antic, bawdy...’ New York Times (on the 2007 Productions)www.propeller.org.uk

The 39 StepsAdapted by Patrick Barlow

BEST COMEDY Laurence Olivier Award 2 Tony Awards

Direct from the West End, Broadway and 25 countries around the globe comes ‘a joyous version of the Alfred Hitchcock classic’ (The Sunday Times) spy thriller, The 39 Steps, brilliantly and hilariously recreated as the smash-hit Olivier Award-Winning Comedy.

This blissfully funny show follows the adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women.

This inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action.

Fiddler On The RoofBook by Joseph Stein Music by Jerry Bock Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick From the award-winning producers of The King and I and High Society comes a new production of one of the world’s favourite musicals, directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, the nation’s favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge and master of the musical stage.Tevye, the local milkman in his village of Anatevka, has always stuck by his traditions but suddenly his head-strong daughters decide that they want to marry for love, rather than accept whatever Yente the Matchmaker comes up with. Tevye loves his daughters but has to convince his wife, and the villagers, that their decisions are actually falling in with tradition – not an easy thing to do, but if anyone can do it, the wily Tevye can!Filled to the brim with classic songs such as If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Sunrise Sunset and To Life, Fiddler on the Roof was the longest running production on Broadway for over 13 years and when you join Tevye, his family and friends, you will understand why.Tickets £37.50 – £19 Concessions available

GHOST – The Musical‘SIMPLY OUT OF THIS WORLD’ The SunDirect from the West End, the smash-hit musical GHOST comes to Nottingham for two weeks this August.

Based on the Oscar-winning movie that captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation back in the 90s, GHOST is a timeless fantasy about the power of love. Sam is trapped as a ghost between this world and the next, trying to communicate with girlfriend Molly through a phoney psychic in the hope of saving her from his murderer.

Adapted for the stage by Bruce Joel Rubin from his own Oscar-winning screenplay, the amazing special effects and dazzling staging are by the multi award-winning Paul Kieve (Inner Magic Circle member) and Tony Award-winner Matthew Warchus.

With a score by rock legends and Grammy award-winners, Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson and Alanis Morrisette), and featuring the unforgettable Unchained Melody, GHOST is a rollercoaster ride of romance and comedy with dazzling state-of-the-art staging – it’s ‘JAW-DROPPINGLY AMAZING’ Manchester Evening News.
