20th anniversary celebrationsThis year The Business magazine is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. First published as a bi-monthly magazine for Dorset in July 1994 demand quickly dictated the need for more editions published per year, and expansion into West Hampshire and Salisbury. We set out to serve a very broad audience and to reflect the diversity of economic activity in the area. We have run thousands of news stories on hundreds of local companies and reported the achievements of many businesses and individuals in the area. It’s only possible to do this with good editorial content, advertisers and regular readers.I encourage anyone who has not yet contributed to The Business magazine to resolve to do so in 2014.My thanks go to all readers, correspondents and advertisers for their support in the past 20 years.

New international education business launches in UK

A business that will bring in young foreign students to the UK to live with families and attend local schools has been launched, with co-ordinators now in place across Dorset.

MyEducation is already established in Denmark and Norway and exists to help the students and their host families, learn about different cultures, as well as improving foreign language skills. The company will also be sending British students abroad, as it develops a network across the continent and further afield.

MyEducation is now seeking host families around the country, who will be able to look after a foreign student aged between 16 and 18, for a five or ten month placement. The students from Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia already speak English and families will receive money, to pay for the extra costs they might incur. Those on placements will attend normal British schools and are expected to immerse themselves in the culture.

Nicky Butler, who has set up the British branch and is based in Southampton, said, ‘We are welcoming applications from families of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds.’

Storage support for local flood victimsFlood hit residents from Iford Bridge Home Park and Gladelands Park, are currently receiving a supportive hand from a local business initiative.

Store & Secure self storage, behind Castlepoint, is providing assistance to all flood victims affected by the recent storms and still at risk from the unpredictable weather forecasts.

Lucy Maidman, Facility Manager, explained the drive from the business. ‘We have been visiting the park to help out with moving packs for residents, including boxes, tape and packing supplies, to temporarily pack their belongings and bring them to our clean and dry storage facility.’

The company is also providing discounted storage for all flood victims and collecting belongings from the residents’ homes.

Lucy commented, ‘It’s not a pleasant situation to be faced with, but if we can help serve the community and be useful to others in distressed times, we are on-hand for those that need support.’

One of the affected residents mentioned, ‘It’s a horrible start to 2014, so having support from others means a lot. We brought the belongings (we managed to save) into storage, where somewhere was dry and safe. Even a cup of tea means a lot in a time of distress.’

Whilst it still remains an unsettling time for Iford residents, the Store & Secure initiative is intended to run until life gets back to normal at the respective parks.

Lester Aldridge’s Employment Team comprises 5 specialistlawyers across Dorset and Hampshire. Catharine Geddes,Partner, considers areas for HR to focus upon in the yearahead.

It’s a new year and a perfect opportunity to review HR’sachievements and struggles of 2013. It is important for HR to planahead for 2014: build on the previous year’s successes and improveHR functions to ensure that the business achieves the very bestfrom its work force.

Here are a few areas for you to consider:- Employment budgets: Review the requirements of your

business, the retention of key staff, training requirements, theskills you need to recruit to secure future success and whetheror not restructuring the business will help achieve overallperformance.

- Recruitment: Consider whether your recruitment strategy isworking for your business. Are you attracting a high calibre ofapplicants? It is also important to reflect on the reasons behindrecruitment eg, growth or high staff turnover.

- Sickness absence records: Review any obvious sicknessabsence trends, any regular culprits and in particular, whetheryour sickness absence policy is working for your business.

- Appraisals: These are an essential tool to set staff objectives, monitor performance, monitor training requirements and toprovide feedback on development. Consider whether yourcurrent appraisal structure generates effective results.

- Management structure: Consider whether your managers are‘managing their teams’ to achieve the best results. Rememberwe’re not all natural born leaders so some may need training orcoaching or otherwise you should considering structuring dutiesso you draw upon individual strengths.

The ‘to do list’ for HR is endless but we encourage you to carry outa review so that time invested is done so effectively and efficiently! Please get in touch with a member of the team if you would likeguidance with any HR matters or to utilise the expertise of our teamthrough in-house training sessions.

South west households and businesses lead way on renewablesNew government figures show that the south west has over a fifth of UK renewables projects installed by homeowners, landowners and businesses, under the government’s Feed-in Tariff scheme. The figures also reveal that under the Feed-in Tariff:

The south west has the most installed capacity of any UK region

The south west has total installed capacity of 436 MW, compared to the closest region, the south east, which has 294 MW

The south west has 2.5 times more solar capacity than the regional average

The south west has 1.5 times more solar capacity compared to the closest region, the south east.

The figures do not cover large ‘utility’ scale projects over 5 MW.

Merlin Hyman, Chief Executive of Regen SW, said, ‘What is unique in the south west is that industry, local authorities and Regen SW have worked together to promote renewable energy and tackle the barriers to its success. Our leadership in local and community scale renewables is bringing us benefits in greater energy security, boosting incomes and creating local jobs.’

Regen is holding the south west’s biggest energy event, ‘Renewable Energy Marketplace’, on 8th April at Westpoint Arena, Exeter, to showcase the benefits of renewables to thousands more south west businesses and households.

DP World Southampton has strengthened its straddle carrier fleet, by taking delivery of six brand new Kalmar machines worth over £3.6m. The straddle carriers are three high diesel electric machines with twin lift capability, which will provide the terminal with the advantage of having more machines, that are able to undertake twin discharge from beneath the terminal’s cranes.

At the same time, work has begun to deepen the main Southampton approach channel, which links the port to the English Channel.

The dredging works will provide access for the deepest and largest vessels afloat to call at the port, including the new 18,000 teu container vessels that are currently coming into service.

This means that from the end of the year, Southampton will offer better accessibility for deep drafted vessels and can compete in every aspect with other ports in the UK and Northern Europe.

Report to reveal performance of south’s leading companies

Output and new orders expand at sharpest rates in survey historyDecember data signalled the sharpest expansions of output and new orders in the south west private sector economy, since data collection began in January 1997. In an effort to raise productive capacity, employment growth also accelerated to a record high, while backlogs of work rose solidly. Meanwhile, inflationary pressures strengthened, with both input costs and output charges increasing at faster rates.

Teachers help First-time buyers Lending at Wimborne-based Teachers Building Society increased by 27% in 2013 compared to the previous year. Surpassing expectations at the specialist mutual, the lending total includes an increase in the amount lent to first-time buyers of 14%.

Teachers Building Society, which specialises in lending to education professionals, extended its reach to non-teachers by rolling out its mortgage service to Hampshire residents in November. Already lending to people of any occupation here in Dorset, this extension is part of the mutual’s strategy to continue to grow both its local and education customer bases.

Last year’s lending surge by the Dorset-based building society came amidst improving conditions for those looking to get on the housing ladder, with the number of first-time buyers taking that all-important first step on the property ladder rising by some 22% nationally*. Committed to helping first-time buyers, Teachers Building Society launched a 95% loan to value mortgage in March.

Teachers Building Society Chief Executive James Bawa says, ‘Lending to first time buyers represents 27% of our loan book for 2013 and it’s an area we really want to keep the focus on. First-time buyers are crucial for the health of the housing market and wider economy and we’ve been very pleased to see the property market begin to recover this year.’

CUSTOM FIT INSURANCE FOR LOCAL FURNITURE GROUP

L-r: Rob Gale and Russell Bowyer

Alan & Thomas Insurance Group has recently added bespoke bedroom furniture maker Custom World, to its impressive rostrum of large local clients.

The commercial insurance broker, with offices in Poole and Gillingham, is thrilled to now be doing business with Custom World, which is based on the Ferndown Industrial Estate.

Commercial Director at A&T, Rob Gale, who won the account, said, ‘It’s great news for our business, to welcome another quality employer in Custom World to A&T. We pride ourselves on offering all our clients a complete service, from initial review and quotation, right through the life of their policy and beyond. We are able to tailor cover to a client’s specific requirements and this was particularly important to Custom World.’

And according to Custom World Managing Director, Russell Bowyer, it was also the broker’s

attention to detail and comprehensive, quality advice that saw them win his business, ‘Right from the outset, Alan & Thomas took a detailed look at our current insurance arrangements and offered a full critique, highlighting any under and over insurances. It was this quality of advice that set them apart from their competition and gave me the confidence to trust them with my insurances.’

Both Alan & Thomas and Custom World are well established Dorset businesses, with very similar outlooks to running their operations. Established in 1975 and 1982 respectively, both are renowned for providing a quality and tailored service for their clients. They are also both

members of the Beacon Network – a select network of high growth businesses based in Dorset, Wiltshire and neighbouring areas, who benefit from facilitated learning and networking forums to assist in their development and future growth.

Output and demandThe headline Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking South West Business Activity Index – a seasonally adjusted index that tracks changes in the combined output of the region’s manufacturing and service sectors – posted at 62.4 in December. This was up from 62.1 in November, and signalled the sharpest expansion of output in the south west private sector economy in 17 years of data collection. Furthermore, it was the strongest rate of output growth across all of the 12 monitored UK regions. Sector data indicated that business activity growth was broad-based, across both the manufacturing and service sectors in the region.

Growth was supported by a record expansion of total new business placed at south west private sector firms. As was the case with output, it was the quickest increase of new order books recorded across all 12 UK regions. According to anecdotal evidence, a general improvement in demand conditions boosted sales over the month.

Employment and backlogsStaffing levels in the south west increased sharply during December, amid reports of company expansion plans. Furthermore, the rate of payroll growth was the strongest of all 12 UK regions.

Despite the net increase in employment, backlogs of work continued to rise in the south west during December. Moreover, the rate of accumulation quickened to a solid pace.

Input and output pricesCost burdens at private sector firms in the south west increased again during December. Moreover, the rate of input price inflation accelerated to the strongest in a year.

Similarly, private sector companies in the region raised their selling prices during December, and at the quickest rate since March 2013.

Commenting on the Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking South West PMI survey, Mark Handscomb, area director SME Banking in Hampshire and Dorset, Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said:

Private sector firms across the south west had a stellar performance at the end of 2013, with output, new orders and employment increasing at record growth levels. The region also had the sharpest expansion of output and new work of all the 12 UK regions in the survey. Greater levels of new work also led to a solid accumulation of work-in-hand, despite the sharp increase of workforce numbers. However, inflationary pressures accelerated across the region, with cost burdens rising at the strongest level in a year and output prices increasing solidly.

The financial performance of the south’s leading companies will be revealed with publication of a report to be commissioned by Taylor Made Computer Solutions.

The IT services business based in Fareham, Hampshire, has taken over the ‘Top 500 Companies in the South’ report from PwC, who presented the report for the last 15 years.

Available on the Taylor Made Computer Solutions website without charge from late April, the data will include sales figures, pre-tax profit, net asset value, number of staff and average salaries paid by each company, together with a comparison with the previous year.

The report will also identify the amount each company donates to charity and invests in research and development.

Private sector hiring intentions reach 30-month peak, as business confidence approaches record highStrengthening services and manufacturing sectors, point to sustained economic growth

BDO’s Employment Index has reached a 30-month peak, as hiring expectations catch up with improving UK business confidence, according to the latest Business Trends report by accountants and business advisers BDO LLP in Southampton.

The BDO Employment Index, which measures businesses’ hiring intentions over the next two quarters, reached 99.4 in December, up from 98.3 in

November. The index has now been at or above the crucial 95.0 level, that indicates employment growth for 12 months and is now almost at the 100.0 mark, which points to employment increasing at its long-term rate. This indicates that employment is gaining pace with the wider economic recovery.

In line with this, business confidence showed similar improvement.

Malcolm Thixton, Partner and Head of BDO LLP in Southampton, commented, ‘We’re encouraged to see that businesses are growing

in confidence and have sharply increased their hiring intentions over the past month, which should help to keep the unemployment rate on a downward trajectory.

‘The issue of unemployment is particularly important, given the Bank of England Governor Mark Carney’s decision, not to allow an interest rate rise, until the unemployment rate is at or below 7%.

‘The flip side of all this, is that labour productivity is still far below its pre-crisis peak. As a result, the issue of underemployment remains, with

some 1.5 million workers seeking full-time jobs being forced to work part-time over August-October 2013.

‘Linked to the debate around employment is the politically sensitive issue of immigration. The government will undoubtedly be waiting with baited breath, to see the effect of the relaxation of border controls that came into force on 1st January 2014. However, our data suggests that the UK has the capability to create more jobs both for UK citizens and for others than some might expect.’

2014: The Year of the Candidate

2014 heralds great news for jobseekers, as the New Year sees a welcome turnaround in the UK jobs market, with an increase in growth for new vacancies overtaking job applications, for the first time in five years.Latest statistics from the REC show the strongest rise in permanent placements since March 2010, with temporary billings increasing at the fastest rate in 15 years. Permanent salary growth is also shown at its highest since October 2007; all leading to 2014 being the Year of the Candidate.

With candidates having a wider choice of positions available to them, employers will need to have a greater understanding of the candidate and look more closely at their motivation. Companies dithering over high cal ibre candidates are advised to ‘snap up’ those deemed right for the role, or they could see their dream employee walk into the arms of their business rivals.

Jobshop UK and Engage Executive Jobs use their extensive database and personal knowledge of their candidates, to guide clients in making the best recruitment decisions for their company.

Thinking Outside the (Patent) BoxIf your company has income derived from UK or European patents, you could benefit from Patent Box Tax Relief. Gradually being introduced over the next few years, by 2017 companies with qualifying income will benefit from a 10% rate of Corporation Tax; effectively half the normal rate.

This relief is a game-changer for innovative companies, and gives them a green light to file patent applications which previously may not have been commercially worthwhile, whilst adding value to those that were.

All profits generated from the use of the patent may qualify, and even more significantly, if the patented component is incorporated within a larger product, profits from the sale of the whole product could be eligible.

The Patent Box Relief ties in neatly with the long-established Research and Development Relief, giving significant tax relief both during and after product development.

Inspire is working together with a renowned firm of patent attorneys to help many clients in maximising their eligibility for this relief. Inspire was one of the first firms in the UK to register a claim with HM Revenue & Customs, so if you think you may be eligible to claim, call 0800 077 6410.

why does the New Year bring about an increase in divorce?

Peppy Griffiths

Peppy Griffiths, family lawyer and mediator at Humphries Kirk explains …

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics estimate that 42% of

marriages in England and Wales end in divorce.

But why is the New Year the busiest period for family lawyers, with a record number of clients seeking information on relationship breakdown, or wishing to issue divorce?

The reality is that many relationships are not entirely compatible and resentments or dissatisfactions simmer below the surface. Add to this mix Christmas and the ‘overs’ (over-spending, over-eating, over-indulging, over-dose of family and relations) and being cooped up in the same space for the extended holidays and something has to give.

By January thoughts are turning towards ‘New Year, new life’ and the decision to do something that may have been considered for some time.

Nowadays there is so much more information readily available on the internet, however it’s not a replacement for the personal touch that a meeting with a lawyer can provide. Your solicitor can offer understanding, empathy and an explanation to the legal options in a clear manner.

Knowing how to obtain a divorce, what the consequences are, how the children will be cared for, what will happen to your home and many more concerns and worries are all questions that Humphries Kirk specialise in.

Meeting the housing needs of both parties, sharing assets and liabilities, looking at income needs and the longer term pension provision is different in every case. Unravelling the finances, considering options, negotiating and achieving solutions can sometimes appear to be straightforward, but more often than not, without legal advice and assistance there is a real risk important consequences can be overlooked or missed.

The options to deal with relationship breakdowns have also changed in recent years. Nowadays the attitudes of the government, courts, judges and lawyers have really altered. Everyone is much more aware of the damage of acrimony and many couples are trying to deal with their separation in a fairer way.

Development and flood risk – threat of rising costsDevelopers planning to build in flood risk areas could be more likely to face extra Community Infrastructure Levy charges, warn solicitors Coles Miller.

Stalemate in the national debate over who pays for anti-flood measures, could prompt local authorities to take matters into their own hands – and pass some of the cost on to developers, it is feared.

House builders are rejecting UK government moves, to make them create ponds to catch rainwater run-off at their developments. The row has rumbled on for four years.

At present the Flood Act 2010 forces developers to make provision for rainwater runoff so it can seep into the ground – rather than flowing into Britain’s overburdened drainage system. But the house builders are loathe to sacrifice valuable land to ponds, channels and open space, because it lowers the density of schemes and reduces their profits. They prefer the idea of using underground tanks instead, but the government has been told that natural drainage is cheaper than using pipes.

So far the result has been an impasse, but it has now emerged that councils could bill the owners of new homes for maintenance schemes relating to flooding.

And Coles Miller Planning Consultant, James Cain, is concerned that some local authorities may take this a stage further and – with no national agreement in place – act unilaterally to make the developers pay as well.

‘The most likely mechanism for this would be the Community Infrastructure Levy,’ said Mr Cain, a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

‘There is deadlock at a national level, over how to reduce the impact of flooding, but in the meantime Britain has suffered its worst storms in 40 years. Authorities across the UK are facing a huge clean-up bill, and there is already significant pressure on their budgets.

‘Our concern is that – in the absence of a national agreement – the authorities might use the Community Infrastructure Levy, as a means of mitigating the cost of flood prevention measures.

‘The sooner the house builders and the government reach a full agreement, the better. This climate change issue is not going to go away,’ he added.

More developers are being forced to consider building on flood risk sites, because of land shortages elsewhere. Coles Miller recommends taking specialist planning advice on:

flood risk – is the area in Zone 1 (low probability), 2 (medium probability), 3a (high probability) or 3b (floodplain)?

design – adding features that can mitigate the impact of flooding

alternative sites – extra flood-related costs may make some small sites unviable.

Coles Miller’s planning consultants are assisting clients with a number of projects involving development sites, that are either in, or abutting flood risk areas. They include a planning appeal relating to studio flats in Salisbury. The scheme – on land adjoining a flood risk area – involves siting the living space on the first floor, above the garages.

The profits of lawThe key findings from the Law Management Section’s annual Financial Benchmarking survey, which is sponsored by Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, reveals the health of law firms across the UK.

The survey shows that fee income for legal firms increased by an average 4.1% in 2013, and that the average profit per equity partner rose by 3.6% to £121,731.

Now in its 14th year, the survey also revealed that whilst a greater number of practices in Hampshire and Dorset have converted to a limited company or LLP, there is a fall in equity partner capital with some firms overdrawing profits.

Apprentice challengeDiverse Abilities is challenging ten teams of four, to compete in one pre-event task and three apprentice themed tasks, to raise money for children and adults with disabilities in Dorset.

The event takes place on 4th June at the Cumberland Hotel and is set to be full of fun and great for team bonding.

Having completed her apprenticeship training, the 21-year old has been given a permanent position in a customer support role at Christchurch based Taylor Made Designs, a company offering branded solutions to nationwide and global businesses.

Managing Director Ed Taylor was introduced to apprenticeships through Steve Barber, business advisor at FNTC Training. Ed commented, ‘Steve informed me I could be eligible for a grant to support taking on an apprentice. He then took time to listen to what type of business we operate and the kind of candidate who would fit, and came up with Daisy. She is a superstar. She has been keen to learn, is dedicated and hard working. So much so, I have assigned her some of our key accounts such as Warner Bros and eBay which is testimony to our trust in her capabilities. I’d have no qualms in encouraging other businesses to take on an apprentice.’

The government is currently providing financial incentives to help SME’s invest in training young people via the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers scheme. Providing the business has less than 1,000 employers and has not taken on an apprentice in the past 12 months, they could be entitled to receive £1,500 towards the costs of training.

Speaking of her job offer Daisy added, ‘I would recommend an apprenticeship to any young person starting out in their career. I have gained business administration qualifications and practical experience, and I’ve been paid to learn. Rather than be at school or college, you get to grips with a real office situation. My boss, colleagues and FNTC assessor have helped me build my confidence and skills. I am proud to have been given so much responsibility and a permanent position in the company.’

FNTC Training has centres in Bournemouth, Southampton, Salisbury, Romsey and the Isle of Wight and specialises in apprenticeships in business and customer service and also care and childcare.

DDoS cyber attacks will riseTechnology provider the Stack Group has warned that cyber attacks known as DDoS are on the rise and will be a major threat for businesses in the future.

Only recently NatWest customers were blocked from accessing online accounts, after hackers used distributed denial of service (DDoS), to bring down the banking system.

According to Jeff Orr, the Chief Executive of IT specialist the Stack Group, these DDoS attacks are now a commercial operation, and can be purchased by internet users, to bring down business websites and online operations.

Jeff said, ‘The recent crash of NatWest system, is an example of how dangerous these DDoS attacks can be, and the worst thing is these are attacks are becoming commoditised. For users who know how, DDoS attacks can be hired to bring down websites and online services.’

A DDoS attack, is where criminals use Trojans to infect PCs with non damaging Bots. These Bots do no harm to the PC itself, but allow criminals to have a network of thousands or even millions of PCs, which can then be used to deliberately harm websites and online systems. The Bots instigate all the PCs to send traffic to a target, such as NatWest Online, bombard them with connection requests until the website can’t cope and crashes.

Jeff said, ‘DDoS attacks are extremely difficult to protect against, as company websites find it difficult to differentiate between malicious connections and genuine. Firewalls can be purchased, which can help tear down malicious connections, but such firewalls are extremely expensive and can only mitigate the effect of DDoS attacks.’

Jeff warns that the rise of DDoS attacks is almost a forgone conclusion and SME’s in particular are at risk: ‘More and more individuals are becoming aware of how they can purchase DDoS cyber attacks, for even just a few dollars and I can envisage a huge escalation in this type of attack, with disgruntled individuals attacking company’s online services.

‘For SME’s this is a particular risk because the software to guard against such attacks will be too expensive. Many SME’s websites are also built to only deal with relatively low levels of traffic, hence their servers have limited buffer memory. This means that their websites can be brought down by far fewer simultaneous connections.

have a great deal to celebrate in 2014. They are 20 years old, have just had their best year on record and have ambitious plans to ensure that the next 20 years are even more profitable and rewarding.

Two of the current Directors Simon White and Mark Pollock have been with Enhanced since its inception and Simon (Managing Director) says, “I joined the company on day one when its mission was to constantly excel in everything that we do. Twenty years later we still pride ourselves on providing the best possible customer service. We understand our clients’ business and deliver the solutions they are looking for on time and within budget”.

So how are they going to celebrate? The company has always been very involved in raising money for the less fortunate. For their 20th year they wanted to make a special difference to one very deserving cause, the boo Charity.

What is the boo Charity? The boo Charity is a charity established in the memory of Sarah ‘boo’ Hicks. Sadly, Sarah lost her battle to cancer at the age of 36. During her last years she sought alternative treatment in Kenya where she was touched by the compassion and love shown to her. boo’s lasting wish was to help African Children who are disadvan-taged through economic poverty.

The challenge is to find 20 companies who will help Enhanced raise £20,000 in their 20th year, by raising £1,000 each.

Just what can £20,000 do? The £20,000 will help build new class rooms, fund teachers and help develop extra courses. Enhanced will specifically be involved in the launch of a basic computing course, which will increase the knowledge and the business acumen of many willing pupils.

“I have been amazed by the initial response,” said Simon, “already several companies have volunteered to come on board and help our cause. We just need for a few more to reach our target of 20”

“I would like to thank our many loyal customers and associates who have believed in us from day one,” said Mark Pollock, “we continue to attract companies who believe that the correct IT is imperative to their business growth and we will continue to offer only the best service and support”.

Keynote speakers at the conference, sponsored by asset finance provider Lombard, include Secretary of State for

EEF Chief Executive, Terry Scuoler, said, ‘There is growing evidence that manufacturers are bringing some of their production back to the UK, or are examining the business case for reshoring. Manufacturing leaders attending the conference,

So it is imperative to pick a venue wisely. And that’s why Moors Valley Country Park in Ringwood is a sensible choice, because it attracts over 800,000 visitors a year. Unsurprisingly savvy artists and craftspeople embrace the exhibition opportunities available at this venue.

Last year’s Creative Coverage exhibition featuring Sean Curley, Penny Wilton, Brian Freelander, Miranda Halsby

Trade Secrets for Speechwriters

Life Begins 50+ Show hits the south coast in March

Recent statistics suggest that as a nation, we’re living longer, healthier lives and that attitudes are changing across the generational divide. The Office for National statistics recently reported that the 50+ generation, often referred to as the baby-boomers has more disposable income than any other age group in the UK – in 2012 their disposable income was nearly £290bn. Considering this was still in the midst of a recession, the figure is surprising at first glance.

Celebrity chef James Martin is among the celebrities appearing at the Life Begins

50+ Show at the BIC in Bournemouth on 23rd March 2014 in what promises to be a jam-packed day of fun for ‘fifty-plussers’ living in the south.

The show will offer a wide variety of activities and topics including three unique cooking demonstrations by James Martin, covering such subjects as ‘creating the perfect dinner party menu’ and ‘cooking for two’. Other activities include a rock climbing wall, an adult bouncy castle, wine tasting and a techno-phobes zone. There’s an abundance of other activities and workshops meaning there’s sure to be something to suit all ‘tastes’.

Managing Director of IMS Group, Jason Harris said, ‘We’ve been working with the 50+ demographic for a number of years through our Life Begins 50+ magazine, which up until recently has just been available in Dorset, but with the rising influence of this age group, we’ve decided to launch it across the south coast. It’s been so well received, that it seemed a natural progression to put on a national 50+ show at the BIC.

The Bournemouth-based UK Speechwriters’ Guild has published its first book: Trade Secrets, Jokes, stories and quotations for desperate speechwriters in 2014.

‘This is a pilot project which the guild intends to become an annual publication, featuring the best lines nominated by its members during the year,’ said the founder Brian Jenner, who contributed quotations to The Business for many years.

‘Most people, when they stand up in public to speak deliver too much information, in a dry way, often illustrated by poor PowerPoint slides. At the guild, we champion persuasion, which involves having a conversation with an audience and motivating them to change something.

‘The book is based on the same principle as Bob Monkhouse’s famous joke books.

‘You need to store up your best lines, and then be able to find them on the right occasion. Audiences appreciate even a little humour. ‘

16% of south west SMEs report increasing staff sickness rates16 per cent of SME bosses in the south west, say that they have seen staff absence levels rise in the last 12 months, according to the latest research by Close Brothers Asset Finance.

The Close Brothers Business Barometer, which canvasses the opinion of SME owners, from a variety of sectors across the UK on a quarterly basis, further revealed that over a quarter of respondents in the region, believe that their organisation has a problem, with employees abusing sick leave.

More than three quarters of employers surveyed in the south west cited minor illnesses, such as the flu, to be the main cause of employee absence, with post-operative recovery the second most common reason for time off work.

CEO of Close Brothers Asset Finance, Mike Randall said, ‘While the majority of sick leave taken is genuine, absenteeism is a growing problem for many local firms and if not managed properly, it could have a serious impact on productivity levels.

‘Our research suggests that a considerable number of employers in the south west, are concerned about the level of non-genuine sickness within their organisation. In the current climate, many workplaces are already stretched and employers are aware, that they have a responsibility to protect their staff from undue stress.

‘That is why it is important that unauthorised absence is managed consistently and fairly, to help minimise the impact on the wider workforce, and ensure diligent colleagues aren’t left to pick up the slack on a regular basis.’

Mr Randall added, ‘Between the cold, dark mornings and the allegedly most depressing day of the year, “Blue Monday”, it’s easy to understand the appeal of an unauthorised duvet day. It’s a good idea to reconsider your current absence policy; one option might be to allow employees additional flexibility to book leave at short notice.’

The Business Barometer further revealed that the ‘fit note’, which was introduced by the government to help minimise the cost of absenteeism, does not seem to be as effective as first hoped. Over one in ten employers polled in the region say it has not lived up to their expectations.

‘Managing staff absence can seem like a daunting task, but it’s too important to ignore. A carefully implemented absence policy could help to improve productivity, boost staff morale and protect your bottom line,’ Mr Randall added.

With all the day to day running of your business, you’re working so hard for your customers that your own promotion and work gets put on the backburner. You half-heartedly write a blog post twice a year under duress and update your Facebook page once in a blue moon.

There are various marketing activities that we recommend our clients do on a regular basis, but how often are we practising what we preach?

It’s called content / continuous marketing. Constantly promoting yourself and your brand to remind customers (and competitors) that you’re out there and (pro)active.

How many of these are you doing on a regular basis to ensure you’re at the forefront of people’s minds and staying ahead of the competition? Keeping your share of the market should come as second nature and you need to make sure your company is using ALL of the channels below on a regular basis in order to stay ahead.

WebsiteUpdating your website regularly will help with SEO. Google hates silence so it’s a good idea to write regular blog posts on your news page about industry related topics and share them with your contacts.

Change your homepage banner once every couple of months so your homepage looks dynamic and active, and people notice something different on your site each time they visit.

SocialUpdate social media pages EVERY DAY. This again helps with SEO and constantly reminds people of your services. Try not to be salesy though, just come across as knowledgeable about your industry and share other people’s content as well as your own. And ALWAYS use images to promote each post; afterall, a picture paints a thousand words.

Email marketingKeep in touch with clients, prospects and suppliers with a regular email newsletter. Share your new products, new client wins and new achievements.

Measure the success and keep a log of the progress from each channel, that way you can see your growth, create new objectives and celebrate successes.

Construction recovery continues in the south west

RICS Construction Market Survey, Q4 2013

Curtis Fields

House building across the south west continued its revival towards the end of 2013 with the private sector leading the way. There was also a large jump in private commercial activity, including office and retail, in the region – with 39% more chartered surveyors reporting increases in activity, the highest level in six years. However, current growth is being met with some shortages of both skills and materials, according to the latest RICS Construction Market Survey.

Despite the fact that the recovery in the construction industry is only just getting underway, skills shortages are already being identified as a constraint on activity. 36% of respondents from across the country claim that labour shortages are restricting building. Labour shortages are increasing across all of the trades, but bricklayers remain particularly scarce due to strong demand from the housing sector.

During the final three months of the year, almost 40% of respondents from around the UK also claimed that a scarcity of materials is limiting activity with surveyors noting that bricks and concrete blocks, in particular, are in short supply.

Significantly, infrastructure construction – a core priority of the

government’s economic plan – is also showing signs of picking up speed in the south west, with the pace of growth increasing at its fastest rate in over six years (net balance 25%).

The improving picture in the construction sector is visible at a regional level across the UK, with workloads rising for the second consecutive quarter in all parts of the country. Significantly, the stronger regional picture is evident in most segments of the construction industry.

Looking ahead, expectations for future construction activity in the south west were extremely upbeat, with 79% more chartered surveyors expecting workloads to increase, rather than decrease during 2014. Furthermore, predictions for employment levels and company profits were also very positive, suggesting that the construction sector may at long last be beginning to prosper.

Alan Muse, RICS Director of Built Environment, commented, ‘With the economy having turned a corner in recent months, it would seem that the construction industry has followed suit and activity is up right across the country. More homes are being built, infrastructure is being upgraded and each part of the UK is benefiting from this more positive picture. However, with recent estimates stating that over 230,000 new homes need to be built just to keep up with population growth, further initiatives from the government will be necessary to get close to this target.’

Companies play cupid . . .

Statistically British employees work longer hours than our European counterparts, therefore given the amount of time we spend at work, and the limited time to socialise during the week, it will come as no surprise that many people find love at the office, but can it really work?

According to a recent survey by website CareerBuilder, the rate at which workplace romances end up being long-term successes is high. Of those surveyed, 38% office workers admitted that they’ve dated a co-worker during their career, of which a staggering 31% ended up marrying that person.

Other work romance statistics showed:

‘Perfect Match’ - 19% of workers said that they are more attracted to someone who has a similar job.

35% women are more likely to date someone with a higher position at the company, compared to 25% of men.

‘Kiss and no tell’ - 37% office relationships are kept a secret.

‘Hot Jobs’ - The hospitality industry has the highest rate of co-workers dating - 47%. Followed by 45% - Financial Services, 43% - Transport & Utilities, 40% Information Technology and 38% Healthcare.

Victoria Maddock, Director of Expectations! Recruitment Services said, ‘It is extremely difficult to keep office dating and romances undercover for a long time, and there are definitely some important measures that you should adhere to in order to ensure that your love story with a colleague does not cost you your job, disturb your work or colleagues around you.’

So if you find yourself attracted to a co-worker, Expectations! Recruitment Services has compiled some useful advice to minimise damage to your career and relationship.

Does your company have a policy about dating and relationships in the workplace? If so, know what it is.

Discuss as a couple, the potential impact of your relationship on your work. (Will one employee have to leave a department or the company if the relationship becomes serious, or indeed not work out? Will your organisation respond favourably to your relationship?) Know your company, and make a plan; this also needs to include a relationship exit agreement, should the relationship not work out.

Keep the relationship private and discreet until you are ready to inform the HR department of your relationship status

Behave discreetly at work; public displays of affection are off limits.

If your position and responsibilities require you to work together, behave professionally at all times.

Maintain the status quo; exhibit the same skills, and conduct yourself in the same manner as you did prior to the relationship.

wEYMOUTH: planning permission granted at appeal

A government appeal inspector has over ruled Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and has granted planning consent for a major development at Curtis Fields, Weymouth. The scheme includes the

demolition of existing derelict farm buildings and the formation of 64 residential dwellings, 19 flats, a convenience store, and office premises together with alterations to the existing watercourse, drainage, highways and landscaping. Outline permission was also granted for a second phase of development for a further 97 dwellings.

Malcolm Brown, Planning Director at Sibbett Gregory, who acted on behalf of Betterment Properties stated, ‘Based on the requirement for the provision of housing over the next five years in Weymouth and Portland, combined with the limited supply of development land the scheme offered obvious benefits to the borough with negligible impact. It was for this reason that we considered Weymouth and Portland Borough Councils’ decision to reject the application was flawed.’

For further information please contact Malcolm Brown, Sibbett Gregory on 01202 661177.

South west house sales hit highest point in over six yearsThe number of homes sold per chartered surveyor in the south west reached its highest point since June 2007 in December, as the recovery in the region’s property sector continued full steam ahead, says December’s RICS Residential Market Survey.

Over the festive period, the average number of transactions per surveyor in the region reached 22*, more than double the lowest point of the downturn back in February 2009, when respondents were selling a mere 9. With more sales now going through, growth in demand for rented accommodation has began to slow significantly, as a growing number of renters opt to test the sales market. Respondents note that increased confidence is a key driver behind growing activity.

Meanwhile, with the amount of homes coming onto the market still nowhere near enough to meet the higher level of demand, prices continue to rise across the region. During December, a net balance of 56% more chartered surveyors reported growing prices in the south west. Significantly, every area of the UK saw prices increase with London and the south east experiencing the biggest jumps.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the more positive tone to the market, expectations for 2014 are decidedly upbeat. Respondents predict that both sales and price numbers will continue to increase across the UK, through the course of this year. This is largely being driven by easing in credit conditions, resulting in higher loan to value mortgages, and the ongoing imbalance between supply and demand.

transport road test

Toyota Auris By Tim SaundersHybrids are all very well but they’re generally smaller than traditional cars and therefore less user-friendly.

Well, at least that used to be the case with the

likes of the Honda CR-Z. The largest was a hatchback, either a Toyota Prius or the more luxurious Lexus CT200h. No estates. Well, not until Toyota launched the new Auris Hybrid Tourer, which really does provide the environmentally conscious with a well sized, capable vehicle but also performance.

Things have really moved on since I drove a hybrid a year ago.

My first acquaintance with the striking island blue estate is at night. It’s always more of a challenge to drive a car you’re unfamiliar with when it’s dark, for obvious reasons. A click of the keyfob and I’m inside. The delivery driver was fairly short by all accounts as my knees are around my neck as I sit in the driver’s seat. It’s easy to adjust. In common with other hybrids I am instantly struck by a feeling of fear as I rummage around for the ignition and even though I push the button start on the right of the steering wheel, there is an unnerving silence. The automatic box really does not look very substantial but on engaging the reverse function it quietly moves backwards. There is an electric parking brake and a traditional one; the first car I have come across with two. The dashboard looks a bit boxy especially where the sat nav is located; it looks like an after thought. Over time the driver does become more used to it, though. It’s a large car, not dissimilar to the Ford Focus estate in terms of styling. Head on it’s attractive and the front looks striking and well designed.

The large panoramic glass roof that stretches from the front to the back of the vehicle has an electric cover and this, in common with those found in Peugeots, is a winning formula. It really does make the cabin much lighter when the sun does decide to show its face.

New build vehicle contract completed for wyvern Cargo

L-r: Horton Commercials General Manager Jeff Wentworth with Wyvern Cargo’s Trevor Green

With my growing family we’re having to make use of every bit of space our Victorian terrace house has to offer and so I have cleared the loft to make way for a more imaginative use of this space; office come bedroom.

Needless to say I have a great deal of rubbish to take to the tip including old bits of wood and plasterboard and a vacuum cleaner. The cavernous boot swallows it all with ease. Although I have to push down two of the rear seats to make way for this large load, it is so easy to do; you simply pull a lever on the right of the boot. Removing the security cover in the boot does prove a little more awkward. A roof box from roofcarriers.co.uk provides extra space.

Despite its loading carrying abilities this Auris Tourer still feels a very compact and sporty vehicle to drive. My wife complains that there is not enough legroom for her as a front passenger but space in the back seems more than adequate. If you want to be environmentally friendly then it will travel a mile or two on ev mode at under 30mph and I notice there’s also a battery mode on the auto box, which has the same effect of engaging ev mode but it is much easier I find than rummaging about for the other dashboard mounted switch when driving. While driving in a green way is slower it does have power when required and there is a more urgent tone to the engine, a bit like a high pitched hum when the accelerator is kicked to the floor. Toyota claims that it will return over 70mpg but the best I have experienced is 49mpg according to the electronic reading.

Overall this is the best hybrid I have driven to date, not only is it striking in appearance, it’s fast when required and capable.

Bournemouth-based commercial cleaning contractor Cleanforce has reported major cost and efficiency benefits, following the introduction of ForeTrack tracking technology across its fleet.

ForeTrack is part of UK communications specialist group Fore Solutions, and with fuel costs increasing, Cleanforce wanted to implement the ForeTrack live GPS tracking system to its five vehicle fleet in order to benefit from the fuel cost savings it offers.

The ForeTrack system has many tools and features, specifically aimed to help firms reduce their fuel bill, while at the same time increase productivity.

To ensure extra fuel is not burnt, the vehicle tracking system enables Cleanforce to monitor excessive idling and speeding. If predetermined speed limits are exceeded, the tracking system provides an alert to drivers to notify them.

The vehicle tracking also helps to increase driver productivity through route optimisation and monitoring a driver’s performance and daily planning. The ForeTrack system generates mileage and timesheet reports, which can remove the task from the driver, allowing them to spend more time being productive.

Paul Gowing, Managing Director of Cleanforce, says, ‘Through introducing vehicle tracking we have been able to reduce our monthly fuel bill by 15%, whilst benefiting from an increased operational efficiency. I’d definitely recommend the ForeTrack system to other firms.’

Tom Ross, Managing Director of ForeTrack, adds, ‘Fleet management technology is changing the way business owner look at fuel consumption. Every fleet must pay for fuel and the challenge is to consume it in the most effective way

possible. As fuel costs continue to rise, business owners seek cost effective ways to manage this unavoidable expense and the ForeTrack GPS technology can be one of the most cost effective means to manage fuel consumption.

‘ForeTrack provides the Cleanforce management team with information to help them to reduce costs, save time and utilise people appropriately. Using this kind of system correctly improves customer service and keeps the team safe out on the road.’
