Distributors required for new Gumwand invention

Book storeNewly published title, The Blue Line Imperative: What Managing For Value Really Means, explains to those who wonder why their value initiatives aren’t providing the payoff they’d hoped for, that it is likely that they’ve been thinking about value in the wrong way.Published by Wiley, August 2013Available in hardcover and ebook, priced £29.99.

A British company has invented and launched Gumwand, a new product that is set to slash the cost of removing chewing gum from pavements and floors, to under 1p per piece of gum. Gumwand is 100% environmentally-friendly and safely removes gum from pavements, combining steam and ‘green’ detergents.

Martin Whitbread, inventor of the product, explains, ‘Gumwand uses a steam process to break up the gum and a powder is created from the residue. The Gumwand operator then simply brushes the powder away. The whole process only takes a couple of seconds and is much greener than the freezing methods typically used.’

Gumwand is actively seeking distributors worldwide.

Are you aware that suppliers have the right to chargestatutory interest at the rate of 8% over the base rateset by the Bank of England, on late payments due forgoods and services rendered?

Legislation aimed at combating the late payment of suchdebts has been introduced under the Late Payment ofCommercial Debts Regulations 2013, which amend the LatePayment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998.

The Regulations are designed to give small and mediumsized suppliers protection from the problems caused by theircustomers’ late or unpaid invoices, which can lead toreduced cash flow and possible insolvency.

The Regulations apply to all business-to-business (B2B) andbusiness to public sector (B2P) contracts for the supply ofgoods and/or services made on or after 16 March 2013.

Under the Regulations, statutory interest will start to accruefrom the expiry of the payment date specified in the contract. For B2B contracts, the payment date cannot be more than60 days after certain trigger events. If no date is specified inthe contract, then interest will start to accrue from an impliedperiod of 30 days after certain trigger events. For B2Pcontracts, the payment date cannot be more than 30 days.

The right to charge such a generous interest rate is grantedby the Act. However, we recommend that you specify thatsuch right is incorporated into your customer contracts, as bydoing so it would act as a useful deterrent to customers whomay otherwise be inclined to pay you late.

If you are a supplier of goods and/or services and would likeus to review your contracts or would like to receive furtherinformation on how the new Regulations can help youoperate your business in a cash-positive way, pleasecontact:

Poole-based world leader to spend £500,000 on R&D activitiesA Dorset business which has become a world leader in fume extraction technology, has revealed plans to spend more than £500,000 on research and development this year.

BOFA International began life in founder David Cornell’s double garage in 1987. More than a quarter of a century later the Creekmoor-based company employs 160 people and has an annual turnover of £13m.

The family-run business designs, develops and manufactures extraction and filtration equipment for a wide range of industries, including electronics, laser engraving and marking, pharmaceutical, printing, dental and beauty. All its products are made in the UK with over 80% exported to more than 100 countries worldwide. Last year BOFA International was presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise by the Duke of Kent in recognition of its work.

David Cornell is now the company’s Chairman while his sons, Christian and Lawrence, are Production Director and Commercial Director respectively.

David said, ‘Research and development is absolutely key to both our current and future success. I can’t really overstate its importance, as demonstrated by the large amount of money we’re committing to R&D this year. Our accountants, Princecroft Willis (PcW), have been invaluable in working with us and identifying the tax relief available to companies like ourselves who are investing heavily in research and development.’

PcW Partner James Robinson said, ‘By working closely with BOFA, our team have successfully identified more than £350,000 worth of reliefs which is a considerable sum. Research and development incentives can apply to a surprisingly wide range of businesses with qualifying product development, system processes or procedures.

‘Companies making a successful claim can either reduce their corporation tax bill or, in some circumstances, receive a cash payment from HM Revenue & Customs. In our experience, many firms continue to be unaware of the considerable tax incentives available to them, which may run into tens of thousands of pounds. We’d urge them to take professional advice,’ said James.

Part of the build included a large roof top terrace to provide useable outdoor space for the staff to relax and chill out during the day, and to also use for informal team meetings and corporate hospitality events.

Coming up with a plan to transform the area into something spectacular to blend in with the rest of the building was difficult, with many obstacles to overcome. The brief was very clear – something with a WOW factor, something colourful yet remaining practical. Sue McLaughlin the Facilities Manager for the building worked closely with WWCS

NEw ChAMBER CARD SERViCEHampshire Chamber of Commerce has launched Chamber Card Services in partnership with a company based in Hampshire, to provide preferential rates and services for its nearly 2000 members to take credit and debit card payments using terminals, virtual terminals and over the internet.

Chamber Card Services is provided by Enpay, a company founded by three directors who feel passionately that companies accepting credit and debit cards often get a less than satisfactory deal, and deserve much better.

Chamber Card Services is available to all including start-up companies who join the organisation.

Roger Foster, Denise Bryant and Lizz Clarke, Enpay’s Directors, are experienced business people who became aware of the opportunity to provide a better payment

8 OUT OF 10 FiRMS SAY UK MUST STAY iN EUCBI/YOUGOV SURVEY

Leaving would hit investment, trade and make us less competitive Firms also identify several priorities for reform

If a referendum on the future membership of the European Union was held tomorrow, a substantial majority of CBI members would support staying in, fearing an exit would affect access to trading markets and business investment, leaving the UK less competitive. That’s according to a new snapshot CBI/YouGov survey.

The survey of more than 400 businesses employing more than 1.5 million direct employees, shows 78% of firms favour staying in the EU, including 77% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Just 10% think it is in their interests for the UK to leave the EU (11% of SMEs). Despite frustrations over the current relationship, and the burden of some regulations, particularly employment law, the survey shows most businesses feel the positives more than outweigh the negatives.

But firms do want to see the relationship reformed. Businesses are calling for a reduction in unnecessary regulations, rules to be implemented evenly across all member states and an end to the ‘gold-plating’ of EU legislation.

John Cridland, CBI Director-General, said, ‘This sends a clear message that most CBI members, big and small, support UK membership of the EU.

‘Firms want what is best for jobs and growth, and there is genuine concern that an exit would hit business investment and access to the world’s largest trading bloc.

‘The UK should take the lead on the push for reform and make sure rules are evenly applied across the EU. Businesses are also concerned about the UK gold-

solution through hearing repeated stories of over-complex pricing, high charge rates and poor service.

‘The more we looked into it, the more we found that merchants – the term used for the company accepting payment via cards – could be getting a much better deal,’ says Denise Bryant, Enpay’s Sales Director. ‘Most companies believe that taking card payments is complex and costly, whereas it need not be. Enpay will work with Chamber members to ensure that they have the right, most cost effective solution to drive increased sales for their business.’

Members using Chamber Card Payment Services will be given information, including a free online portal telling them exactly how much they are taking at any point in time via card payments, to help them build their revenue.

‘After sending out a tender for this important facility,’ says

plating legislation from Brussels. ‘Businesses do have some

serious concerns about the EU, but ultimately they want the UK inside the tent winning the argument for reform.’

Among the survey’s key findings:

71% said the UK’s membership has had a positive or very positive impact on their businesses, with 16% stating it had no impact and 13% that the impact was negative

Among the SMEs surveyed, 67% think membership of the EU has had a positive impact (16% no impact, 16% negative)

When asked to rank their priorities for reform, 46% wanted an end to ‘gold-plating’ of EU legislation and 39% wanted to see EU rules applied evenly across all member states. Other priorities for reform include reducing regulation (39%) and making structural reforms for a more competitive EU (36%)

75% think leaving the EU would have a negative impact on the overall level of foreign direct investment in the UK – 9% thought it would increase investment. 35% warned they would be likely to reduce their own business investment in the event of an EU exit, compared to 51% saying there would be no impact and only 6% who stated they would boost investment

86% believe that leaving the EU would have a negative impact on UK firms’ access to EU markets (11% thought it would have no impact and only 1% a positive impact)

59% thought that an EU exit would reduce the international competitiveness of the UK as

a whole, with 15% believing the UK would be unaffected and 23% that there would be a positive impact.

The survey shows a majority of companies see the EU as having a positive impact on their businesses, in terms of their ability to buy and sell products inside and outside EU markets without prohibitive taxes or tariffs, and to recruit staff from across the EU.

However, firms are concerned by the potential impact an EU exit would have on their businesses and the UK as a whole. Some benefits to leaving were

identified, such as a reduced regulatory burden. A significant minority of firms felt that an EU exit would have no impact on them, but very few pointed to positive benefits. A bigger proportion said that the UK leaving would have a negative impact judged against most criteria, including the UK’s international competitiveness, its ability to participate in EU supply chains and access to EU markets.

Christchurch revealed as UK’s retirement capital Analysis released recently reveals that more pensioners per head live in Christchurch, Dorset than anywhere else in the country. Prudential’s analysis of the latest UK census data shows that three in every ten people (30%) living in Christchurch are retired. The figures show that the proportion of pensioners in the town is over 80% higher than the UK average of 16%.

Perhaps unsurprisingly London is home to 17 of the 20 local authorities with the lowest proportion of pensioners in the country. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has the lowest proportion of retirees of any local authority in the UK, with only 6% of people living there aged over 65.

There is a tendency for people to move out to the country when they stop working, where property prices can be lower and the quality of life is often thought to be higher. In doing so, many retirees are freeing up funds to boost their income or reduce their living costs.

Justin King, Chartered Financial Planner and retirement expert from Christchurch-based MFP Wealth Management said, ‘All of the people consulting us are approaching retirement, or have just retired, and are seeking advice on how to manage their assets and maximise their income in retirement.’

He continues, ‘Many of these people have recently moved to our beautiful part of the country attracted by the stunning scenery and more relaxed way of life. But the options and choices people face when they retire can be

both complex and confusing. Seeking advice from a lifestyle financial planner can help give retirees confidence in the choices they make, and ultimately make all the difference when it comes to the income they will receive for the rest of their lives.’

catering and business diningMouthwatering recipes in aid of The Prince’s Trust as local team joins Million MakersHampshire-based HCR, is throwing its weight behind a bid to raise funds for The Prince’s Trust by coming up with a new publication – the Hampshire Cookbook.

The project is part of the charity’s Million Makers campaign, a national competition calling on employees and university students to come together and raise £1m to help make a difference to the lives of young and disadvantaged people.

‘Entrepreneurial teams from across the UK create and promote their own ideas, then compete for seed funding from The Prince’s Trust in a Dragon’s Den featuring top business experts from

across the UK,’ said HCR Head of Marketing Simon Hood, who is heading up the company’s Million Makers team.

‘The idea is to turn that funding into a profitable enterprise and feed those profits back into the Trust. We’re delighted that our Hampshire Cookbook passed muster through the selection process – and now we’re ready to get started. We’re also looking for local companies to get involved and sponsor this tempting

collection of mouth watering recipes.’

Convinced that Hampshire should be loud and proud about its local cuisine and produce, the team is already working on food choices for the book. Example recipes include: saddle of new forest venison with pears and roasted walnuts, smoke Hampshire trout with water cress salad and marinated beetroot with rosemary goats cheese with bee pollen and Hampshire honey.

And there are also several sponsorship packages to choose from.

‘We can offer local businesses

the chance to list their details in the book, put their names to a recipe – or go the whole hog and sponsor the entire publication,’ added Simon.

‘There is plenty of room for us to repay The Prince’s Trust’s faith in us and make a real difference by producing a fantastic return on that initial investment. I’m delighted by our team’s enthusiasm towards an incredibly worthwhile cause and wish them every success with this exciting project.’

The former Malvern Day Centre in Moordown, currently home to Evelyn’s Bakery, a part of the local charity the Training and Learning Company, is on the verge of opening a new café for use by the community.

Greg Singleton is the Head Baker of Evelyn’s Bakery. He will be preparing the food at the café, whilst providing work experience placements for 20 people with mental health problems.

‘The day centre was closed two years ago, but the council were good enough to let us use the kitchen in October 2012 and we currently bake and sell food at community events,’ explains Greg. ‘The café is something which is a

natural follow on and we hope it will be supported by those in the local area. It is a great opportunity for those with mental health problems to really benefit from this project. J.P. Morgan has assisted us with financial support of £1,000 and this is helping us to equip the café with crockery and much needed equipment.’

A set meal each day with a dessert is likely to cost £4. A lunch club may be formed. There are also plans to offer afternoon tea.

Volunteers are being sought to help oversee some of the work experience activity and anyone who is able to spare any time during a week should contact Greg on 07915 798 837.

Different companies react in different ways to tough economic conditions. A drop in revenues, real or anticipated, certainly concentrates the mind. The bean-counters give us all two stark options – grow revenues or cut expenditure (or both).

Q. How smart is it to cut e-marketing expenditure and still expect revenues to grow?

A. Not very.

Cut back on e-newsletter marketing and the water turns off. Your seedlings wither and the chances of a bountiful harvest later in the year are nil. Don’t cut it, increase it.

Six reasons why e-newsletters work well:1. They keep your brand visible between sales, more visible than your competitors.2. They keep your readers updated about new services/products and offers.3. They are measurable and can be optimised over time.4. They position you as a leader, authority or specialist in your field.5. They nurture relationships with a ‘drip-feed’ approach, preferred by readers.6. As the competition (foolishly) cuts back, you are the only one left to take the orders.

Maintaining a professional e-newsletter programme is a fixed-cost, high-value contributor to revenues. Budget restrictions are inevitable, but in marketing they don’t help to generate revenues. An e-newsletter sent on a regular basis builds relationships, revenues and a solid business presence.

It’s no longer simply about storing and routing

their own business problems and create better and more efficient processes within

their organisation.

Technology boss Lawrence Jones has called on local authorities and schools to engage with tech-savvy young people, by investing properly in devices for the classroom.

Jones, CEO of hosting and cloud provider UKFast, says youngsters who have grown up using devices at home, are already familiar with the technology when they start school, so the presence of technology in the classroom can improve results.

‘These young, innovative and creative minds are coming into the education system with a pre-developed set of skills, so surely the government and schools should embrace the tech that already engages students,’ he said. ‘Students grow up with iPads and social networking, and tech becomes second nature. The internet is literally at their fingertips. What we need to do in school is make sure these children have the opportunity to engage with these forms of technology. Things like textbooks and whiteboards could disengage them.’

Joining Jones on a panel of experts discussing technology in education was Michael Wilkinson, Director at i-education. He claims the schools that have invested in technology have revolutionised the way in which lessons are conducted and wants to see others follow suit.

Wilkinson said, ‘You can look across the board and say categorically that outstanding schools make outstanding use of technology, whatever that technology happens to be.

‘The people who use it best are the ones who are going to make it a success. We now have a series of tools that enable us to provide more effective learning.’

Khawer Ishtiaq, Head of ICT

The financial services industry is under increasing scrutiny to be transparent in today’s market. With regulations, ever-changing customer expectations and the unpredictability of today’s economic market, the team at Collate Business Systems in Ringwood are seeing the financial service sector increasingly turning to technology to meet their demands and lower overall costs.

Enterprise content management (ECM) delivers immediate business value to a range of sectors, without sacrificing the agility necessary to meet changing business. It adapts to existing business processes, building on them to make them smarter, faster and more efficient.

‘One of our IFA clients reduced the cost of their client advice

processes by up to 57% while also eliminating costly manual data entry errors,’ said Greg, ECM Consultant at Collate Business Systems Ltd.

ECM can easily fulfil regulatory auditing and compliance requirements, plus, keeping records in order with the ECM Audit Trail it has never been easier-you can maintain evidence of contracts, certificates and legal content. The technology allows you to identify, classify and preserve records, ensuring compliance support with a full audit history.

BT announced it is to close down its dial-up internet service from 1st September, meaning households will be required to seek an alternative for online access. According to BT, around 1,000 dial-up customers in rural areas do not have access to a fixed broadband connection and these households will need to switch to another dial-up provider - such as Plusnet - or consider investing in alternative technology.

Mark Wynn of Avonline Broadband, the UK's largest provider of the leading Tooway satellite broadband service, said, ‘Every one of these dial-up users can switch to satellite broadband immediately, wherever they live in the country. Not only do they retain a broadband connection but with Tooway they can

instantly access up to 20Mbps download speeds, greatly improving their broadband options.

‘Some other technologies will struggle to reach these rural users in the foreseeable future but because everyone is the same distance from the satellite, we guarantee that we can reach anyone wherever they live in the UK with fast satellite broadband today.’

The Tooway satellite broadband service delivers download speeds of up to 20Mbps anywhere in the UK immediately via satellite transmission, with no need for infrastructure investment. The option of unlimited data allowances via satellite was also recently introduced for the first time in this country.l www.avonlinebroadband.co.ukLawrence Jones, CEO, UKFast

at Shuttleworth College, called on schools to not only invest in technology, but also keep their finger on the pulse, by keeping up with which devices are relevant to students’ needs.

He added, ‘Technology in education is going to be defined by the devices that are available to the students in the coming years. Schools need to look at how we can use these devices effectively, so they have a positive impact on teaching and learning.’

Tom Button, Support Leader at Maths in Education Industry, agrees that technology in the school environment is a must, because of its effect on pupils’ attitude toward learning overall.

‘Technology provides a massive opportunity for a change in psychology, because a lot of students think you are supposed to learn when you are sitting in the classroom, silent, and the teacher is saying something,’ he said.

‘In fact, any of us who have ever taught would say that is when the least amount of learning takes place. Students are not afraid to “fail” or make mistakes now, thanks to technology. If it is a game and they miss out on the next level, they try again. If it is a word document and a red squiggle appears under a word, they try again until they spell it correctly.

‘There’s a process of making mistakes and correcting them, which students are fearful of in a normal classroom environment. In a technology-based environment the fear factor disappears.’

The panel gathered at a round table debate, hosted by UKFast in Manchester. The hosting firm has long been an advocate of integrating technology into learning, having played a key role in the pilot of the National IT Diploma.

Schools urged to embrace skills of tech-savvy studentsInvestment in technology is a must, says CEO

More developers being hit by Community infrastructure Levy warn planning solicitors

from the levy on those parts of a development, which are to be used as affordable housing.

Councils are also likely to impose a Community Infrastructure Levy, to help provide public open space for large housing developments. But developers can contest the Community Infrastructure Levy, where circumstances allow. Coles Miller advises:

Get specialist legal advice – the planning process is inherently complex

Challenge early – as soon as possible in the determination stage, rather than appealing against a planning decision that has already been taken

Negotiate early – some local authorities are prepared to reduce CIL charges, if the developer can put forward a strong case.

‘Some local authorities are more pragmatic than others. They would rather see some kind of benefit for their town, than risk a developer walking away because the CIL was too high,’ said Mr Cain. ‘Councils accept that the last few years have not been easy for developers and they would rather have 50% of something than 100% of nothing.’

But Mr Cain added, ‘The developers have to be pragmatic as well. They are more likely to succeed in getting a CIL reduced, if they aim for a win-win compromise.’

He and his team specialise in planning applications in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset, but they carry out work across the UK.

Mr Cain said the Borough of Poole was one of the more progressive planning authorities, with regard to the Community Infrastructure Levy because it published detailed costs online, with current residential charges ranging from £75 per sq m to £150 per sq m.

‘That helps to remove uncertainties from the planning process. Different local authorities are more further forward than others. Poole is leading the way locally,’ said Mr Cain.

Coles Miller Solicitors’ planning team advises commercial developers and also individual residents seeking specialist legal advice. The team can carry out feasibility studies – including the use of digital imagery – to help determine the financial viability in planning development projects. The team can also provide planning permission advice, with regard to identifying and promoting strategic sites for development.

Growing numbers of developers are being hit by the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) imposed by local authorities, warn planning solicitors Coles Miller.

Local authorities are increasingly looking for alternative sources of revenue, as central government freezes the amount they are allowed to raise in Council Tax. Developers are in the front line, as councils impose Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) charges on them, or recommend Section 106 planning agreements. Under these levies and agreements, developers carrying out schemes, must either pay extra charges to the council or undertake extra work, such as carrying out road improvement schemes.

‘It’s one of the things that developers are worrying about most at the moment. They are becoming more commonplace,’ said Coles Miller Solicitors Planning Consultant James Cain, a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.

‘Local authorities are more likely to charge and those charges are getting higher,’ he added.

Councils will typically seek to impose a CIL charge to cover the cost of providing extra transport infrastructure, to serve new housing or commercial developments. The CIL regulations provide 100% relief

Preserving your assets for the next generation

By Martha Swann, Solicitor, Dickinson Manser LLP

A house or business is likely to be your most valuable asset. It is not merely bricks, mortar and turnover but a whole lifetime of memories, the value of which is immeasurable.

It is understandable to want to preserve your assets for the next generation, and not so that they can be used as a funding source for care fees or inheritance tax.

Many people think that transferring their home to their children is the solution, and it could well be, but there are

all sorts of implications which must be considered before this drastic step is taken, such as the unknown future financial status of the younger generation, which could affect your security within your own home. Equally there are technical tax planning schemes and issues, including means of making a gift of your home and continuing to live in it, but not falling foul of the revenue’s ‘gift with a reservation of benefit’ rule, which might help or hinder your plans.

The good news is that there are some circumstances, whereby your home will not be considered under a financial assessment for care funding, and with the rules changing all the time, it is worth speaking to an expert for the up to date position.

Thinking about your business, there are significant tax breaks which can greatly benefit your estate, if the business is structured correctly. The best way of achieving this is for your solicitor and accountant to work together, so that the tax planning can run firmly alongside your personal needs and situation.

There is much to consider and at Dickinson Manser LLP, we have a team of experts experienced in all aspects of the benefits regime and inheritance tax planning, ready to give you balanced advice on your own particular situation and wishes.

Rise in minimum wage: ensure you comply with legislationOffering childcare vouchers as an employee benefit is a great way to help working parents meet their childcare costs and aid recruitment and retention of experienced staff. If childcare vouchers are operated as a salary sacrifice scheme, whilst an employee agrees that their wages are effectively cut in exchange for benefits, it is up to the employer to check they are not paid less than the current minimum wage rate.

From 1st October 2013, the adult rate for national minimum wage will increase by 12p to £6.31 an hour.

Busy Bees Benefits has always prided itself on excellent customer service in terms of the operation of the childcare voucher scheme, ease of registration, support and service standards. When registering for Busy Bees Benefits Childcare Vouchers, employees complete a basic earnings assessment electronically. They are asked to declare their gross earnings and any pre-tax outgoings - including any other salary sacrifice schemes such as cycle to work and pension schemes. The Busy Bees Benefits system then automatically calculates whether or not these deductions would mean they would fall below the minimum wage threshold. If the amount of vouchers they request takes them past the lower limit, the system automatically tells them the maximum amount of vouchers they can claim.

Employers - clarify what you want from each new hire

UK growth heavily dependent upon our medium-sized businesses attracting top talent and skills

If you can’t describe exactly what you want, don’t be surprised if you don’t get it.

Poole-based Rubicon People says most job descriptions don’t adequately define the work that needs to be done and most CVs don’t define the work that people can do, or the achievements they have made. Instead, Job descriptions are full of words filling up space, without really describing how each responsibility is measured. As a result, it’s no wonder people can’t find the right jobs, and companies can’t find enough of the right people.

For Rubicon People’s clients with permanent vacancies, the team produce a recruitment specification that is supplementary to the job/person spec and this document helps to define the job, before defining the person required for doing the job. This tool incorporates a qualification of the main 4-5 performance objectives, building on the traditional list of skills, experiences and generic statements ensuring that each responsibility is ‘Smart’ and adding an extra dimension, that of the pace and culture of the organisation, the resource constraints and any unusual challenges.

Rubicon suggests that interviewers describe each performance objective and any candidates being interviewed provide an example of a comparable accomplishment for each one.

Examples of ‘Smart’ responsibilities: Specific (a non ambiguous, responsibility that has a defined resultant outcome)

Measurable (the responsibility described can be assessed during & after completion)

Action-oriented (a tangible responsibility that requires inputs) Result focused (deliverables are outlined) Time-bound (a clear indicator is built into the responsibility, that provides clear expectations for duration and end times)

By clarifying job expectations, interviewing accuracy is increased for prospective candidates prior to submission. The benefits of incorporating this approach for existing and new employees is increased on-the-job performance, increased job satisfaction and heightened self motivation.

As a reputable local recruitment agency, Bond Williams Recruitment is adept at sourcing fully qualified talented individuals for clients as and when the need arises – much of this on a contingency basis. However, what can businesses do themselves to deliver and retain top talent and skills within their organisations over the longer term?

‘Ensuring the UK’s medium-sized businesses (MSBs) can recruit skilled employees will be critical to a sustainable economic recovery in the UK’, the CBI Director-General said in a speech to business leaders in London recently.

Mr Cridland, went on to say, ‘Our economic growth relies on being able to mobilise the UK’s medium-sized firms into a powerhouse, to match the Mittelstand (the engine driving the German economy).’

It’s apparent MSB’s need to broaden the skills base and their capabilities. These firms need better management capabilities, the skills and knowledge to grow, export and innovate. Right near the top of this list is the capability to find, develop and retain top talent.

CBI research shows that growth in employment across the economy will continue to be in professional, managerial and technical roles, which is exactly where the most severe shortages currently persist.

39% of firms are already struggling to recruit workers with the

advanced, Science, Technology, English and Maths (STEM) skills they need – with 41% saying shortages will persist for the next three years.

By Robert Bond – Director at Bond Williams Professional Recruitment

What next? Maybe Universities and MSB’s must work more closely together, to better align skills development and research with economic and business needs across managerial, professional and technical roles.

It’s also important that business is involved in curricula - developing what is learned as well as researched.

Mr Cridland would also like to see business schools leading the way – reaching out to firms in their area to help them fulfill their growth potential and in turn creating graduate employment opportunities locally. ‘Business schools should always be with business, not just about it,’ he said.

Meanwhile here at Bond Williams we are doing our best to support the UK economy... we have recently acquired an additional 1,000 sq ft of office space to accommodate the expansion of the business. We are now spread over three floors overlooking The Square in the heart of Bournemouth town centre.

No double dip recession and

the war on executive talent

‘Outstanding, informative and challenging,’ were the words used to describe the Jobshop UK and Engage Executive Jobs annual seminar, which saw CEO of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, Kevin Green, take to the stage to talk about market trends in the jobs market.

Kevin discussed with the audience of local business professionals that there is now proof that although we never had a double dip or triple dip recession, figures suggest that we had a much deeper recession than previously thought. However, GDP rose by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2013 and the predictors are that this will rise to 1.7% across the second half of the year. This growth has seen permanent vacancies grow at their sharpest rate for 6 years.

Skills shortages continue to be in the fields of engineering, professional, media/PR, IT, sales and rail, with a ‘war on talent’ at all leves including executive level. Along with core professional skills, companies are now in need of candidates with an ability to be operational, as well as being able to see the bigger picture. Inspirational motivators with an ability to embrace change are the employees of the future.

Frontline hails manufacturing recruitment boom

Weymouth-based Frontline Recruitment is hailing a rise in new manufacturing placements, as a sign that the economic recovery is well underway.

Frontline, which recently announced a 40% rise in revenue for the first six months of 2013, has seen the majority of new clients – some 44% – come from manufacturing companies, mirroring recent Manufacturing Advisory Service figures, that the sector is leading the UK out of recession.

Tony Wilmot, Director of Frontline Recruitment, said, ‘We’ve seen a huge rise in demand for staff from the manufacturing sector, and this is excellent news. Those in the manufacturing sector are looking to “try before they buy” as orders improve and the demand for staff increases, and this is reflected in our figures. There’s no doubt that the finger is on the button as far as economic growth is concerned.’

Frontline is experiencing the demand for manufacturing staff, after the Manufacturing Advisory Service reported that 54% of SME manufacturers reported an increase in sales in the first half of the year, with 63% predicting further growth over the next six months.

Rachael Fidler

The runway is clear, the weather is calm and traineeships are ready for take-off!

The new traineeship programme went live on 1st August, offering 16 to 23-year-olds access to work experience, support in English and maths, tips on CV-writing and advice on how to prepare for an interview. This initiative also helps develop vocational skills and knowledge - everything, in fact, that a young person may need to progress onto a full Apprenticeship. Funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), it forms part of the response to criticism to business leaders concerns regarding the low skill levels of young people wishing to enter the world of work.

In my opinion anything

which encourages and equips young people to access work, or the path to a job, is a good thing. Traineeships will provide both work experience and the opportunity to learn within a structured programme. Of course, every candidate is different and it will be important for the training provider to apply intelligence and experience, to customise the programme. Traineeships meet the specific requirements of the young person and the needs of the employer. Traineeships must therefore be flexible programmes.

In order for traineeships to have value and attract young people, they need to offer something ‘attractive’ at the end of it. An apprenticeship is the logical outcome. Setting the expectation that, if the young person applies themselves, they could gain, an apprenticeship with the potential of a permanent job, offers

motivation. Working closely with employers, training providers can make this work place entry model a reality enabling young people to join the pay roll by equipping them with the skills needed in the workplace.

However, if young people on benefits cannot afford to take up the traineeship, the whole concept may fail before it starts. I feel strongly that employers need to offer some form of traineeship allowance. Although this is not compulsory, it makes sense to remove any barriers which prevent young people taking part in the programme.

My reasoning is simple: a student, even one in full time education, has the opportunity of having a part time job while studying but a young person in full time work, even as a trainee, is limited in this respect. If a young person isn’t better off by working, then there is no incentive.

We have to find a way of getting young people in to work and to give them the opportunity to progress and develop careers. If we position the traineeships carefully, as high quality launch pads into potential careers, remove the obvious financial barriers and encourage the training providers and employers to be flexible and smart in the construction of the curriculum for each candidate - we may create a new generation of high flyers.

Flexibility of zero hours contracts key to economic recoveryZero hours contracts are set to be a crucial element in the economic recovery and their abolition would have a negative impact on businesses of all sizes.

That’s the view of Employment Lawyer Katherine Maxwell from Moore Blatch, who said that zero hours contracts offer both employers and employees flexibility, in what is still a fluctuating and uncertain economic situation.

Her comments follow massive interest and criticism over zero hours contracts, calls for them to be banned and the government’s consultation to tackle the abuse of zero hours contracts, announced at the Liberal Democrat conference.

The CBI believes that unemployment would have hit the three million mark, without the availability of zero hours contracts, but unions say the contracts are unfair and leave employees insecure financially.

Katherine Maxwell

‘There continues to be a tremendous amount of controversy over zero hours contracts and whether or not they are fair,’ said Katherine. ‘But used correctly they are vital for so many companies, to cope with changing business circumstances.’

She said their abolition could have a huge effect on a business’ ability to trade through, what are still difficult economic conditions. ‘Companies need to be flexible and manage their resources very closely whether that is supplies, capacity or people.’

It’s estimated that more than one million workers are on zero hours contracts, with numbers rising, as companies look for the most cost-efficient way to

manage staff levels.Katherine said that companies

who might otherwise face financial hardship, can manage staffing levels with employees on zero hours contracts.

‘The vast majority of companies are using these contracts in the best interests of their business and employees, but it is important that they are structured correctly, for the best long term prospects for both parties.’

The changing face of HR and the launch of Bond Williams HR AwardsThere has been a shift change in human resources (HR) over the past 10 years, not only in how HR is viewed by a business, but how HR professionals operate to maximise business output. Gone are the days of HR being just a transactional support to an organisation. The new HR department is there to thrive on operational business objectives and increase turnover.

With the changing face of HR comes the modern HR professional, a person who is business savvy, embraces change and most of all, works in sync with a business’s key deliverable objectives. A senior HR leader needs to be at the sharp end in designing and defining a HR strategy, that complements the business strategy. They need to be capable of wearing multiple hats and engaging

with operational partners within their business, often learning a multitude of skills along the way. HR is no longer just the administration supporting a business, it is relied upon as a driving force and like in many cases, has become its own revenue generator.

In order that we may recognise the amazing HR people in the local area, and more importantly give local businesses the opportunity to show what fantastic professionals and teams they have within their organisations, Bond Williams Professional Recruitment is launching a new initiative for Dorset. The aim is to recognise, identify and reward those HR individuals and teams that make a positive contribution to their businesses, HR departments and the HR profession, by delivering outstanding results. Bond Williams HR Awards (in

association with the CIPD) is a Dorset-based annual event, to recognise excellence within the HR profession. Each category will be independently judged by a panel of well-respected, local HR leaders consisting of the Personnel Today HR Director of the Year for 2012, Group Chair for the Bournemouth & Poole CIPD and HR Director & Board member for a national, multi-site organisation. Winners will be announced and awarded in November.

Goadsby sells 15,000 sq ft freehold office in under two weeks

Trafalgar House

Goadsby Commercial has been successful in securing a purchaser and completing the sale of Trafalgar House in Winchester. The building extends to 15,114 sq ft and provides predominantly open plan offices with 20 parking spaces. This prestigious property is situated just off Winchester High Street, next to the Crown Court and only a short distance to Winchester train station.

The property has been purchased by clients of Ashville Estate Management. As specialists in office investment they will immediately be commencing a refurbishment of the building with a view to having it ready for occupation in early 2014.

UK construction strategy will drive growth across the entire economy

The launch of the government’s ‘Construction 2025’ Strategy heralds strategic changes, whereby the government will work alongside industry in order to put Britain at the forefront of global construction over the coming years.

The Construction Strategy is the result of over six months of discussion and planning by the government, alongside a specially selected panel of 18 key construction industry figures; including Poole-based Greendale Construction Ltd’s Director, Chris

Kane, in order to develop a long-term vision.

Officially launched on July 2nd this year, the strategy clearly defines where UK construction will be in 2025, alongside a set of aspirations which include: lowering costs to see a 33% reduction in the initial cost of construction and the whole life cost of built assets. A 50% reduction in the overall time, from inception to completion, for new-build and refurbished assets. Greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment to be reduced by 50%, and a 50% reduction in the trade gap between total exports and total imports for construction products and materials.

By 2025 it is intended that the UK construction industry will lead the world in low carbon and green construction exports; it will be seen as efficient and technologically advanced, and known for its talented and diverse workforce. With clear leadership from the Construction Leadership Council, the implementation of the strategy will see the construction industry drive growth across the entire economy.

Construction Industrial Strategy Advisory Council member, Chris Kane commented, ‘Being part of the Strategic panel has given us an insight into the areas of highest potential to target future contracts. Once implemented, the strategy will streamline the planning process, enabling Greendale and our clients’ planning applications to go through quicker. Funding will be more readily available for the public sector, which is good news for the schools and colleges we work with in building, extending and improving their facilities.

‘The government are committed to making improvements within the domestic repair and maintenance market, through a coordinated approach to health and safety, which in turn will help Greendale’s small works division.

‘Greendale’s have always taken training and apprenticeships very seriously, and The Strategy also shares our view that setting the foundations for a positive flow of new talent into the industry, is of paramount importance in order to bring the UK construction industry to the forefront of the global market.

‘With the global construction market forecast to grow by over 70% by 2025, the future looks increasingly positive for Greendale and those hoping to pursue a career in construction and the trades associated with it, which in turn will drive growth across the whole UK economy.’

Chris Kane

Sellers return to the south west housing market in record levelsRising prices and burgeoning buyer demand have led to significant increases in homes coming onto the south west property market, says the August RICS Residential Market Survey.

During August, 68% more chartered surveyors reported increases, not decreases in new instructions in the region (from +42% in July). This is the highest number since RICS started to record these indices in the south west, and with positivity starting to return, it seems that those who may have been waiting for the right time to sell are choosing now to do so.

The number of would-be buyers also increased sharply during August, as increasingly accessible finance allowed more people to enter the market. A net balance of 66% more respondents reported growing numbers of enquiries from potential buyers last month, which is again the highest number since RICS started to record these indices in the South West.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, price increases became more widespread, as 40% more surveyors reported rises rather than falls across the UK. This is the highest reading since November 2006 and demonstrates the extent to which the market is starting to recover.

Looking ahead, it seems that recent price rises in the region, and across the UK, are going to continue unabated. A net balance of 35% more surveyors expect further price growth in the south west over the next three months, as the market continues find its feet - this is the highest level since June 2006.

A new report, which shows that European supply chains across a range of sectors have the highest level of factory fire risk highlights a worrying but unsurprising revelation, says supply chain consultancy, Crimson & Co.

The report, published recently by the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange found that while only 6.6% of African supply chains fail to comply with safety measures, 13.5% of European supply chains fail to comply with safety measures, ‘signifying a global issue which isn’t reserved for non-European countries, as many may assume,’ commented Tom Woodham, Director of end-to-end supply chain consultancy, Crimson & Co.

‘Supply chain failures due to fire have been frequent in the news recently, from clothing factories in Bangladesh to the Hynix chip factory in Korea, but we rarely hear of issues in European countries.’

Woodham continued, ‘Supply chain and procurement directors need to ensure that their supply chains have taken appropriate risk management actions, which can be very difficult in today’s global supply chains. A robust risk management approach needs to go

to both first and second tier suppliers and look at both issues that can cause technical problems and social responsibility issues.

‘Any approach should be based upon a solid risk model to ensure that resources are targeted in the most appropriate way. A robust supplier audit process can then be established, made up of both planned and “surprise” visits to ensure that suppliers are reviewed in line with their risk profile. It may also be appropriate to work with some sort of industry wide accreditation system allowing everyone to share the cost and benefits of such an approach.’

The report found that the top five most prevalent fire safety non-compliances in supplier sites across the world include: missing or inadequate exit signage and functioning emergency lighting; blocked aisles/and fire exits; and fire- fighting equipment inadequately installed or missing.

‘There is no excuse for non-complying supply chains. As complexity increases, it is easy to forget about key considerations along the chain, but organisations need to ensure they carry out robust risk assessments to avoid such damaging issues coming to light,’ concluded Woodham.

Supply chains still avoiding risk management, says supply chain consultants

2013 sees Williams Lester Chartered Architects have dual reason for celebration. Firstly, it marks the significant milestone of its 25th anniversary since incorporation. Secondly, following the recent retirement of founding director Walter Williams, David Lester who joined the company in 1989, has become Managing Director. He in turn has appointed two new Directors, Andrew Kenyon and Stephen Johnson, to ensure the continued growth of the practice.

David has 33 years experience, having worked for companies such as Jackson Green Downe and Westover Design, where he was involved in projects ranging from hospitals to all forms of residential development. He then joined McCarthy and Stone becoming Chief Architect for the Southern Region, gaining considerable experience of the Sheltered Housing sector, before moving on to form Williams Lester.

The two new Directors each bring their own area of expertise to the practice. Stephen’s responsibility is in the field of Conservation and Listed Building work, which constitutes a growing proportion of the practice portfolio. Whilst Andrew, who has worked closely with many long-standing clients involved in a wide range of mainly residential development projects, has a keen interest in the ever more important issues of sustainability, energy saving strategies and eco-housing, and is also a registered SAP assessor.

To try to put 25 years in business in context, when Williams Lester was incorporated in 1988, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, petrol was £1.67 per gallon, the average house price was £60,000 and the pound note ceased to be legal tender.

Although the economy, to say the least, has been unpredictable in the interim period, Ringwood-based Williams Lester has grown to be one of the most respected and successful architectural practices in the region. This has

been made possible by being responsive to changing market demands, investing heavily in the latest architectural computer software, focussing on customer care and excellent teamwork. The practice has also developed a reputation for gaining planning approvals in sensitive and challenging locations, often where previous applications have been refused.

This commitment to moving with the times, and settling for nothing less than ‘Best Practice’, has led to Williams Lester being the recipient of numerous industry awards, from RIBA Project Design Awards to Civic Trust Conservation Area Awards, and from Natural Stone Awards to National Homebuilder Design and Healthcare Design Awards.

Since the beginning of the year the practice has seen a steady growth in instructions across most market sectors, necessitating the appointment of two new Architects who between them bring another 20 years of experience to Williams Lester.

Currently the workload includes a number of prestigious projects such as the Greyfriars Arts Centre in Ringwood, Ferndown’s long redundant former Dormy Hotel site, and the regeneration of Blandford’s Grade 1 Listed Town Hall site, which includes new civic offices, for the Town Council. The practice is also involved in numerous large residential housing schemes in the south of England, from Essex to Devon. Paul Clark, a Residential Developer and long term client of Williams Lester stated, ‘In all my dealings with David Lester and his team I have always experienced exceptionally friendly and efficient service coupled with a general “can do” attitude that prevails throughout this busy practice. This is a refreshing contrast to the brusque manner one often experiences elsewhere in the business world.’

Having achieved several recent planning approvals for care homes, Williams Lester continues to service the burgeoning care sector, in various parts of the country. Substantial expertise is also offered in the design of sheltered housing, housing for the elderly and in specialist fields, such as dementia care.

From the outset Williams Lester has been a multi-discipline practice, and as such is able to offer a wide range of services including:

Site feasibility studies Planning and development advice Design of private one-off houses Design of general residential projects including affordable housing

Conservation area and listed buildings Care sector design Schools, leisure, hotel and commercial buildings

Building regulation drawings and construction details

Contract Administration Code for Sustainable Homes compliance, SAPs & EPCs

Williams Lester also offers a FREE initial site appraisal.

David Lester, and the staff at Williams Lester, would like to thank all their clients for their loyal support over the years. The practice looks forward to the next 25 years and to maintaining its commitment to offering a professional design service, from the traditional to the contemporary , and to ensuring they meet any demanding client brief in the most cost effective manner.

Third Party harassment Law repealedUnder the Equality Act 2010 an employer can be vicariously liable if an employee is harassed by a third party (eg a customer or contractor) if (a) that third party has harassed the employee on at least two previous occasions; and (b) the employer fails to take reasonably practicable steps to stop the harassment.

From 1st October 2013, employers will no longer be liable. Despite 71% of respondents to the government’s consultation having opposed any change in the law, the government insists that the Equality Act provisions are unnecessary, and that employees can pursue alternative legal routes if they believe they have been subject to repeated harassment by a third-party.

ignorance is no defence... ‘Uneedus’

However, removal of these provisions may not relieve employers in the way that the government hopes. Employees might still be able to argue under section 26 of the Equality Act that an employer’s inaction in the face of third-party harassment amounts to unwanted conduct ‘related to’ a protected characteristic that violated their dignity or created an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them.

Have you heard of the Corporate Manslaughter Bill which came into effect on 6th April 2008?

If you are an employer that supplies a vehicle for business use, or allows an employee to use their own vehicle for business use, then this legislation applies to you?

Two haulage company owners were recently sentenced to 7 and 4 years imprisonment after being found guilty of manslaughter. One of their drivers fell asleep at the wheel and was killed after working for 19 hours, and driving for 13 of them, breaking all road haulage legislation. The investigation that followed also found that the company had been falsifying information supplied to Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise.

To help employers with their day to day fleet/vehicle management, which in turn can prevent the devastating effects that an accident can have on a business, Paula and Brian Thompson have just launched Uneedus Business Solutions. Brian Thompson commented, ‘I started Uneedus to help companies reduce the risks associated with managing their vehicles and drivers. This can be done by introducing processes and procedures that produce a robust audit trail with the minimum of effort.’ He continued,

‘Our system will provide on-going updates of changes in legislation, as well as co-ordinate all relevant information in respect of every vehicle used on behalf of a company.’

The Corporate Manslaughter Bill would seem to be one of those pieces of legislation that employers adopt an ‘It’ll never happen to me’ attitude, either that or they do not realise that it applies to them. An employer is responsible for doing all checks thoroughly, in this case in respect of vehicles and drivers. This applies

to MOT, Insurance, Road Tax, Driving Licence, including checking that it is genuine and not a copy, and the general road worthiness of any vehicle being used on behalf of the business.

The system used by Uneedus has proved to be so successful that both the AA and the Freight Transport Association have endorsed it. Paula Thompson commented, ‘As well as saving companies time, and therefore money, by collating all data for them, our service is akin to a second insurance policy, and all for as little as £4.50 per vehicle per month, depending on the size of fleet.’

Brian has 29 years experience in road and vehicle safety, with employers such as the AA, Hampshire Constabulary and BSM. The knowledge he has gained from that experience gives him the ability to speak with authority on all matters relating to vehicle management and safety.

Uneedus is offering a FREE and WITHOUT OBLIGATION assessment of your fleet/vehicle requirements, including recommendations.

You can contact Uneedus on 01258 445045, by [email protected] and you can find out more by visiting www.uneedusbusinesssolutions.com

10 years of great service…Congratulations Mail Boxes…With a little help from ‘friends’, 10 years of continuous growth is currently being celebrated by Mail Boxes Etc., the local business service provider which can supply everything from simple mail box rental, through to packing and shipping as well as brochure design and full colour printing.

Twin Sails, set fair…

Now, with 40 major events already confirmed for 2014, the Christmas menu planned, and a new daily menu, Twin Sails Wharf Bar & Restaurant really is making incredible headway. To keep the momentum going, Sally Pyle, Owner, has just introduced Afternoon Tea, served 7 days a week between 3pm and 6pm, to the ever increasing reasons to visit the Twin Sails.

September saw an array of different occasions being celebrated, from several

weddings to a 40th birthday, and from a Wake to a Hen Night. Sally commented, ‘You really do see all of life here. I see it as a great privilege to be able to host these events, and to share in the fun and happiness that they bring.’

It is clear that customers are delighted with the venue and the level of service that is provided, as Twin Sails regularly receives repeat business. An International Boat Race organiser commented on the Twin Sails, ‘On behalf of the organising team, and the race entrants, I would like to offer our thanks for all the positive and proactive assistance which you and your team provided during our recent Race Prologue.’

He continued, ‘This year was very much about setting the strong foundations for future international races, and we relied heavily on those with experience and insight to guide our path. The delivery of such events often requires the type of assistance which can sometimes involve support which goes beyond normal expectations. In this respect Twin Sails was truly fantastic in ensuring our race was able to operate successfully.’

With testimonials like this it is clear to see

why the Twin Sails is becoming top of the list when booking a venue in Poole

Throughout December, beginning on December 1st, Christmas Dinner and Lunch will be available and bookings are being taken now. If you are planning a Xmas party, whether for 2 or 150+ people, Sally would love to hear from you. Howard Woodward, Owner, who opened his first store, situated at The Lansdowne, Bournemouth, in June 2003 commented, ‘The expectation for growth at that time has more than been fulfilled. As our reputation has grown our sales have increased consistently, in fact to such an extent that we were able to acquire our second store, situated close to The Triangle, in July 2010.’

With a wealth of experience gained in the marketing departments of companies such as Xerox, Letts Diaries and Unipart, Howard was well equipped to set up and run his own business. He continued, ‘It’s interesting the way the two stores have developed in very different directions. The Triangle store is very print-oriented, whilst the Lansdowne store, by contrast, is very much a packing and shipping store, as well as being a leading supplier of dissertation printing and binding services to students at Bournemouth University.’

Mail Boxes Etc. has built significant

relationships, and an enviable reputation, with auction houses across the county. Should you be the successful phone/on-line bidder, for a painting, ceramics or a clock, in Dorset, it’s highly likely that it will be Mail Boxes Etc. that will pack and send it for you, whether in the UK or abroad.

As you might expect from a marketing specialist, Howard is always looking to develop further business opportunities, and to this effect he has just added a large format scanning service to the already diverse array of services on offer.

Grant Campbell of Campbell Rowley, a company that has supported Howard and his team from the outset, commented, ‘We’ve been using Mail Boxes Etc. for the last 10 years. From deliveries to printing proposal documents, their attention to detail is fantastic, and just as importantly, everything is always dealt with in a friendly manner, even when opening early or working late to get our

work produced.’Howard is the first to recognise that the

success of Mail Boxes Etc. has been achieved through the dedication of his loyal staff and the continued support of all his customers, he commented, ‘I would like to thank all the customers who have supported us over the years, and look forward to serving their needs in the years to come. We work hard to give our customers excellent service, aiming not just to meet but to exceed their expectations.’

An increase in demand for transport services is a good early indicator of economic recovery and Wyvern Cargo, the leading south coast haulier, is well placed to spot such a trend.

‘There have been positive signs in recent months though the main test of a sustained economic recovery will come in the months ahead, not just before Christmas but also into the New Year,’ declares Evan Sparrowhawk, Wyvern’s Managing Director.

The run-up to Christmas always coincides with a surge in demand which Wyvern Cargo is very well placed to manage this year, its Midlands depot having relocated to more spacious premises at Wellingborough in August.

Wyvern’s sister company Poole Express,

which represents the FedEx UK overnight parcel service, is also confident about the economic trend. ‘In October FedEx is opening a new regional sorting centre on a 3.8 acre site at Enfield to serve London and the south east,’ Colin Hawkins, Operations Director of Poole Express, says with enthusiasm. ‘We’ve taken our cue from the early signs of recovery and are ready for further growth. Feeding Home Counties traffic through the new North London hub will reduce pressure throughout our overnight trunking and sortation system.’

‘Predict and Provide’ is a phrase which is clearly in fashion with both Wyvern Cargo and FedEx UK.

Record-breaking Bournemouth Air Festival Bringing the biggest ever number of people Bournemouth has ever seen in one day, the sixth Bournemouth Air Festival scaled new heights, with an incredible 1.3 million festival-goers visiting the seaside resort.

The Festival got off to a great start on Thursday with more than 200,000 visitors enjoying glorious sunshine and seeing displays from the Red Arrows, Battle of

Britain Memorial Flight and Royal Navy Black Cat helicopter.

Friday saw the return of the RAF Typhoon display to the Bournemouth Air Festival; its first appearance in four years. Crowds of up to 235,000 watched with mouths open and ears covered as the ear splitting jet roared over the shore in an astonishing display. More than 55,000 people attended the Night Air programme on Friday, with fantastic live music at the two pier stages and a sparkling dusk air display featuring the Red Devils, complete with glow sticks and

incredible pyrotechnics.The glorious weather continued

on Saturday, and with the Red Arrows opening the flying with their third display in Bournemouth, huge numbers of people packed the beaches and cliff tops before noon.

By the time the Typhoon had closed the flying displays, a record-setting 400,000 people had visited the Festival site. The people just kept on coming, with a further 42,000 witnessing the final evening of Night Air, making it the busiest day in the history of the town. And it wasn’t just

the beaches and cliff tops that saw record crowd levels; out to sea almost 1,000 boats were anchored amongst the Royal Navy vessels.

The Festival drew to a close on Sunday with another impressive crowd. Joining the 275,000 people ashore were more than 500 boats taking in the fantastic displays and unbroken sunshine. Whilst the Vulcan didn’t display due to technical issues, the crowds enjoyed a fantastic variety of entertainment including powerhouse helicopter performances from the Royal Navy Black Cat, the hulking Royal Navy Merlin and a stunning Chinook display.

Also impressing were Festival newcomers Patrouille Reva, with their tight display packed with Gallic flair, British heritage jets the Vampire and Meteor, aerobatic aces The Blades and, drawing the flying to a close, an absolutely screaming performance by Bournemouth favourite Jonathon Whaley in the elegant Miss Demeanour.

The dates for the 2014 Air Festival have been confirmed Thursday 28th August - Sunday 31st August.

New motoring book by Hampshire journalistMore than one million BMW X5s have been sold and therefore the market is awash with used examples of this prestigious and popular Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

Former Bournemouth Echo Motoring Editor Tim Saunders, from Park Gate near Southampton, has now written a guide to buying the first generation BMW X5 E53 (1999 to 2006).

‘The whole purpose of this pocket-sized book is to help prospective purchasers by highlighting potential faults and pitfalls,’ says Tim, who writes a weekly used car column for the Newbury Weekly News. ‘It is the next best thing to having a qualified mechanic with you during your vehicle inspection.

‘While the X5 E53 has many strong points, such as excellent ride and good equipment levels, this model is renowned for poor gearboxes, leaks and electrical problems, which can all be very costly. This book forewarns prospective buyers of these issues and will hopefully help them to buy the best X5 E53 for their budget.

‘Due to the good amount of head room, the X5 E53 has always appealed to tall drivers, which is why when it was new, the likes of footballer Steven Gerrard and boxer Frank Bruno owned one.’

Published by Veloce Publishing Ltd, the Dorchester-based publisher of fine motoring books The Buyers Guide to the BMW X5 E53 is available at veloce.co.uk, all good bookshops and amazon.co.uk, priced £12.99.

High Speed 2 (HS2) rail will deliver jobs and growth across the countryA new high speed rail link between Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and London will be a ‘heart bypass for the clogged arteries of our transport system’ according to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

In a recent speech to business and industry, he outlined the case for a new high speed rail line north of London. He highlighted independent new research by KPMG, which shows HS2 could give a £15bn annual boost to the economy, with the north and midlands gaining at least double the benefit of the south.

Speaking at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London, the Transport Secretary said, ‘The point about High Speed 2 is that you won’t have to travel on it to gain from the better transport system and economic growth it will support.

‘People who may never use the new line, will still gain from more services for towns and cities up and down Britain. More room for local trains. More space for direct services to London from places that can’t get them today. More space for freight trains – to free up our motorways.’

Pointing to new research from KPMG on the economic benefits of the scheme, Patrick McLoughlin said, ‘It will make Liverpool stronger, Manchester stronger, Leeds stronger, Britain stronger. A £15bn annual boost to the economy, with the north and midlands gaining at least double the benefit of the south.’

In making the case for a new high speed rail link, the Secretary of State also highlighted more than £70bn of capital investment in transport in the next parliament, of which only £16bn is for HS2.

Transport funding committed to by government includes:

 £24bn on new major road schemes including 400 miles of extra lanes on our motorways;

52 major projects and 195 pinchpoint schemes to bust jams; and

£6bn this Parliament and £12bn in the next to resurface roads and fix potholes.

This is in addition to record investment in rail. This includes: £37.5bn by Network Rail between 2014 and 2019; delivery of Crossrail and Thameslink in London; an 850 mile national programme of electrification and new fleets of faster trains on the East Coast and Great Western mainlines.

Raising cash for air ambulance Employees of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer Rygor put their best feet forward to net nearly £4,400 for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance by taking on the famous National Three Peaks Challenge.

The gruelling event requires participants to climb the highest peaks of Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) within 24 hours.

Yellows fly high after landing airport bus contract

Yellow Buses is flying high after landing a major deal with the owners of Bournemouth International Airport.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has awarded the Yellows the prestigious contract to run the A1 shuttle bus.

The hourly service runs from 7am to 7pm seven days a week. It will link Bournemouth Airport and the Business Park with Bournemouth Town Centre and main hubs within the Yellows’

network, including the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The MAG contract is for a minimum of three years.

MAG is the country’s largest UK-owned airport operator with its four airports - Stansted, Bournemouth, East Midlands and Manchester – serving around 42 million passengers every year. Bournemouth serves around 600,000 passengers and 36 destinations annually.

SOUTH WEST MUST SHOUT LOUDER FOR TRANSPORT LINKS Road and rail links are a crucial issue for the south west’s potential to deliver economic growth and new jobs - but the region lacks a voice to command attention. At a time when there is national debate about the coalition government’s commitment to a £multi-billion investment in HS2, to improve rail services to the midlands, the south west has dire need for better road and rail links. That coincides with the government having almost halved the funding available to the newly created Local Transport Boards in the south west, to pay for new road and rail initiatives.

This is the key finding of the latest report from the online radio service - South West Business News - investigating the region’s road and rail links. While an interview with Mark Hopwood, Managing Director of First Great Western, highlights the benefits of electrification plans for the Bristol and Bath area, he accepted the problems faced by business travellers in Devon and Cornwall.

Chris Irwin, European Policy Adviser to Passenger Focus, Britain’s statutory watchdog for public transport, is far less bullish about future plans for rail-links in the south west.

Mr Irwin, who is also Chairman of Transport South West, says the south west will need to shout louder to avoid being ignored, because of the focus on HS2 and north-south rail links.

While the South West Business News report on the region’s road and rail links reveals the massive differences within the region, Mr Irwin suggests that the loss of the South West Regional Assembly and the South West Regional Development Agency, underlines the lack of a regional voice.

‘The combined efforts of the Welsh Assembly Government and the South West Regional Development Agency (now disbanded) made electrification of the Paddington to Cardiff rail-line happen. LEPs don’t have the clout to provide that regional voice’, he warned.

WESTOVER KIA CELEBRATES SUCCESSWestover Kia is celebrating continued success as the manufacturer reveals strong nationwide sales ahead of the new ‘63’ registration plate. Kia has set a new ‘personal best’ in the UK, with the brand achieving more than 43,000 new vehicle sales so far this year. In Ferndown, where Westover Kia is based, sales continue to build, with annual figures set to peak at around 510 (representing a 58% increase on 2009, when Westover first opened its Kia dealership and immediately stole the title of top UK dealership).

Paul Griffiths, Brand Manager at Westover Kia, comments, ‘It’s heartening to see the new car market getting back on its feet, but especially pleasing for us to witness the phenomenal response from UK buyers to Kia’s vehicles.’

With a starting price of just £7,795 for a brand new car, Westover Kia has a strong line-up of vehicles – all with a seven year (or 100,000 mile, whichever comes first) warranty. The range includes fuel efficient city cars, as well as MPVs and SUVs, with four models falling into the eco-friendly emissions category B and qualifying for road tax of just £35 per year.

Kia delivered a record 6,027 cars in July – a 3.72% share of the new car market – with the Sportage crossover leading the way (with 1,707 sales in July alone). Westover Kia’s experience reflects the nationwide picture, with the Sportage also ranking as the most popular model in the Dorset region. Here though, the Picanto is snapping at the Sportage’s heels in a close second place.

road test Honda Civic

New price range: £16,995 - £28,280Facts at a glance0-60mph: 10.2secs Top speed: 129mphPower: 118bhp Economy: 60mpg

By Tim Saunders

There are two diesel engines available on the new Honda Civic: the 2.2 and the 1.6.

I can’t speak for the former but the latter is so economical that I cover 300

miles on barely quarter of a tank.

Honda claims that its 1.6-litre iDTEC will return 78mpg; I experience around 60mpg encompassing all manner of driving from stopping and starting in the slowest of traffic jams through to fast and demanding motorway cruising.

This latest example (the ninth generation) of the Civic builds on the futuristic theme and enhances the parts that the original hinted at but didn’t carry off as well such as its rear, which features bulbous lights while the triangular exhausts have disappeared as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. I thought I would miss these but the whole package is more aesthetically pleasing. The concealed handles for the rear doors make this five-door seem like a three, especially to my wife when she first tried to get our children in the back. It’s a nice touch and one that seems to have been copied by other manufacturers. The rear windscreen is still an annoyance for me because of the position of the spoiler which effectively cuts the screen in two and hinders vision when inside. But it’s a great driver’s car with body hugging ‘magic’ seats.

My family and I demand much from our striking red protégé because we go away for a long weekend and while it is not large enough for our tandem pushchair, it copes with a suitcase, my daughter’s Trunki, a single pushchair, a crib, a bouncer and a box of food as well as my daughters in their two car seats. Despite being weighed down the driving experience is good. The economy figures I mentioned earlier are reached with a combination of automatic engine stop/start and the use of a green economy button to the right of the steering wheel. While engaged progress is noticeably a little lethargic on occasions and disengaging this does speed up the process. But once the Civic is on its way progress is satisfying and with the correct gears there’s an element of gusto. The gearbox is a little notchy but it can be forgiven this for its decisiveness.

The Civic is a tricky car to reverse and on occasions it can be difficult to gauge whether there are any obstructions behind and so it is helpful that some models are fitted with reversing sensors; unfortunately this model does not have them.

Equipped with all the usual refinement the air conditioning is an absolute blessing during the height of our British summer where temperatures exceeded 25 degrees Celsius. And so the lo setting keeps us all extremely happy.

Engineering firm secures funding for growth High precision machining company, Weymouth Precision Engineers Ltd, is set for growth after a £61,000 asset finance deal from Santander Corporate & Commercial enabled them to purchase two state-of-the-art computer numeric controls (CNC) machines.

Originally founded in 1964, Weymouth Precision Engineers was acquired by first-time owner-managers David and Richard Wilson in February 2013. The company produces large, small and prototype work for the manufacturing industry. Its key strength is the ability to turn work around quickly, with some items being completed within a couple of hours of receiving the order.

David and Richard are planning to grow the business by focussing on increasing the customer base and expanding into as many sectors and industries as possible. They have already taken on an additional four engineers and the new CNC machines will allow them to increase productivity and tender for larger contracts.

DJ Property has announced that planning permission has now been submitted for Phase 2 of the Link Park Business Park in Weymouth. Phase 1 was completed at the end of 2012 and within eight months four national companies have taken units at the park including Screwfix, Toolstation, Halfords Autocentres and Topps Tiles. A fifth national company is planning to occupy the remaining two units within the next couple of months.

Mickey Jones, Chief Executive of DJ Property, the company developing Weymouth’s newest business park, said he was delighted to announce the second phase of the development.

Mickey commented, ‘Phase 2 of Link Park will be constructed in a slightly different way from the first phase. The second phase will consist of 7 units measuring between 1,500 sq ft and 2,500 sq ft and will be particularly attractive to local small to medium sized businesses looking to expand their business into new commercial space. The units will be of market leading quality and are very visible from the busy Chickerell Link Road, just what occupiers are demanding.’

He added, ‘Phase 1 has let very well and I am very proud of the companies who have chosen to come to Link Park as they can see that DJ

Property is a trusted, professional developer of commercial property that builds long-term relationships. Phase 2 will build on these relationships with local businesses as we have always supported successful local businesses. What’s good for south Dorset is good for us. It is hoped that Phase 2 of Link Park will attract up to 100 jobs when fully let.’

Subject to successful planning application, building will commence at the end of 2013 and the units should be ready for occupation by spring 2014.

Weymouth & Portland focus

The cruise season at Portland Port has seen record breaking passenger numbers land on the Isle of Weymouth and Portland. The beginning of August saw the port welcome the AIDAstella in for the final time this year. She was carrying 2,567 passengers on board as she came alongside, a figure that has set a new record for Portland Port and a target to break in future seasons as the port continues to develop its cruise offering and continues to develop within the cruise market as a whole.
