THOMAS J. DRESING, MD ’83 Thomas Dresing (father of Meredith ’17 and Sam ’22) has rejoined the board as Vice-Chair and currently sits on the Executive Committee and the Committee on Directors. He served his first term as a board member from 2006 through 2015. Tom is the Staff Physician at the Heart and Vascular Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in the section of Electrophysiology,

the Program Director of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship, and Director of Electrophysiology of the Cleveland Clinic Western Region. Tom holds a B.A. in anthropology from Dartmouth College and an M.D. from the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

JOSEPH MICLAT ’90 Joseph Miclat (father of Madeleine ’24 and Francesca “KiKi” ‘26) is an experienced private practice tax attorney. He also provides commercial real estate management and professional trustee services. He has served on the Parents Association’s grants committee. Joe earned his B.A. from Boston College, a

J.D. and M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University, an L.L.M. in taxation from Boston University, and an L.L.M. from the University of Miami.

PATRICK HARRINGTON Patrick Harrington (father of John ’20 and Matthew ’20) is a private practice attorney who acts as general counsel to the Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association and Environmental Water Solutions. In addition to serving on the Development Committee at Lake Ridge Academy, he is also a volunteer with LCADA Way. Pat earned his B.S. and B.A.

in marketing and international business from The Ohio State University, an M.B.A. in finance from Xavier University, and a J.D. from Capital University Law School.

LAURIE GATTEN Laurie Gatten (mother of Rachel ’23) is a Director at Barnes Wendling CPA’s Inc., providing accounting, assurance, tax, and consulting services to non-profit organizations and privately held companies. Laurie is active in the community. She serves on the finance and audit committee at Koinonia Homes,

Inc., and she is the treasurer of the St. Peter Sports Association. Laurie is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace University where she earned a B.A. in business administration.

2016-2017 Board of Directors

Lake Ridge Academy’s Upper School musical, The Addams Family, was nominated for three Dazzle Awards, PlayhouseSquare’s high school musical theater awards program. Debuting this year, the Dazzle Awards are modeled after the Tony Awards and recognize outstanding musical theater productions and their student performers. The Addams Family was nominated in the categories of Best Musical, Best Costume Design, and Best Technical Execution.

The entire cast was invited to participate in the Dazzle Awards show, which was held in May, at PlayhouseSquare’s Connor Theatre. Lake Ridge Academy was one of only six schools that performed. In addition, several lead cast members were able to train with professional theater actors prior to the show. The Dazzle Award show was directed by Dan Knechtges, a Tony Award-nominated choreographer and director who visited our campus last November as an Artist in Residence. Congratulations to the entire The Addams Family cast and crew!

Spring Highlights

THE ADDAMS FAMILY MUSICAL RECEIVED THREE DAZZLE AWARD NOMINATIONS

At the March Barnes & Noble Book Fair at Crocker Park, Lake Ridge Academy students shared their many talents with the community and our families. Proceeds from the event, including sales at Barnes and Noble and our dining partner, Chipotle, benefit our school. All faculty members received at least one book from their wish list through the generous donations by our families.

With a backdrop of student artwork, students in grades 1 through 12 read out loud, played musical instruments, performed in French and Spanish, and sang. Patrons at the store were overwhelmed by the incredible talent of our students.

TWO MOCK TRIAL TEAMS ADVANCED TO STATE COMPETITION

Lake Ridge Academy sent two teams to the state competition last spring, the only school in Northeast Ohio to do so. The teams won one best attorney award and three best witness awards. Only four schools had multiple teams in the State competition: Indian Hills - 4 teams, Lake Ridge Academy - 2 teams, Marysville - 2 teams, and Pickerington - 2 teams.

The Lake Ridge Academy Class of 2016 graduated four student-athletes who will be continuing their athletic careers in college. Brianna Kirk is playing basketball at Hiram College; Sam Waldock is playing basketball at Heidelberg University; Megan Williams is playing basketball at Washington & Jefferson College; and Marc Ayad is playing soccer at Emory University.

The Humanitarian Aid Society once again hosted its annual Culture Fest. The April event brought students and families of all grades together to enjoy cultural music, dance, and food representing various countries from around the world. The Saturday afternoon event raised money for the Malala Fund.

April ended with the annual Fine Arts Festival, a day-long celebration of art filled with workshops and performances for all ages to enjoy. Grades K through 8 rotated through various workshops, as they practiced new skills in theater, visual and digital arts, and music. Our art show included pieces of work from students of all grades. The day concluded with an evening of performances by the School of Fine Arts (SOFA) sophomores and the Middle and Upper School jazz ensembles. Art teacher Tim Callaghan with SOFA students, Sophie Spellman ‘17 and Joey Tagliaroni ‘17, led K-8 students to complete a plein air painting that was permanently installed in Kemper Science & Engineering. See page 10.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM REACHES FIRST REGIONAL TITLE GAME

In March, the girls’ basketball team reached the elite eight for the first time in school history, competing in the Division IV regional final game against Cornerstone Christian Academy. It was a hard-fought game with a final score of 44-42 in overtime. The team had a great season with a 19-8 record, and Coach Lisa Medvetz was named Lorain County Coach of the Year.

After 20 months of planning and construction, Lake Ridge Academy officially opened Kemper Science and Engineering at the start of the 2016-2017 school year. Celebrating with a week-long schedule of activities, all students, faculty, parents, alumni and donors were able to experience the remarkable facility and learn how it will transform our ability to educate the science and engineering leaders of tomorrow.

More than 25 partners in education gathered in the new Exploratorium to learn more about the new facility, advanced science and engineering curriculum, and the exceptional faculty and students who make the building come to life. The guests included college admission representatives, executives from the Cleveland Clinic Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, the Beck Center, the Nord Family Foundation, Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, and the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce. The afternoon event included a full campus tour, lunch with the Class of 2017 Institute for Scientific Research Fellows, and observation of an AP Chemistry lab.

All-School Ice Cream Social and Ribbon-Cutting CelebrationKrill Construction provided lots and lots of ice cream to the entire school on a beautiful, sunny afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of Kemper Science and Engineering. John and Betty Kemper earned big cheers from the students and hugs from their six Lake Ridge Academy grandchildren as President Klimas told the excited audience about how their creative ideas and scientific solutions might solve some of the world’s biggest challenges one day. To help mark the occasion for years to come, Karen (Kemper) Kastelic provided a time capsule in which hundreds of student-submitted science predictions will be stored until the school’s 75th anniversary in 2038. Then, science got “super fun and silly” as students participated in age-appropriate science activities and challenges in the quad.

Auto CAD Class

A third grader looks through the dual-sided fume hood that is accessible from the Yoo Research Lab and the Kaatz Chemistry Lab, giving students the ability to fully view teaching demonstrations in both Spellman Science Suite classrooms.

There is a lot of “new” happening in our recently opened Kemper Science and Engineering! The building is home to one of our newest faculty members, Mr. Todd Morrison. Mr. Morrison took on a brand new position as an engineering and Auto CAD teacher in the Upper School while supporting the entire K-12 curriculum related to the Navratil Engineering Fab Lab.

Mr. Morrison is a civil engineer with ten years of experience working at private engineering firms and municipal engineering departments. He has designed many different types of projects including bridge rehabs, waterlines, roads, sewers, geotechnical analysis, and green infrastructure like bioswales and rain gardens. Mr. Morrison had an early interest in engineering recalling, “I built my first computer

around the age of 13. I began at Ohio State with a focus in computer engineering and wanted to become a programmer, but I eventually changed my major to civil engineering. My dad, now retired, owned and operated an excavation company. So I’ve spent most of my life around construction, and it seemed like a natural fit since I already knew a lot about this kind of work. I find that I enjoy exploring new technologies and developing new ideas to fix old problems.”

Lake Ridge Academy is a place where Mr. Morrison is very happy to dive into new technologies as a teacher and help students to innovate and solve problems. He finds many things about our school unique and exciting compared to his small, rural public high school. The Navratil Engineering Fab Lab is a cutting-edge space, and the entire Lake Ridge Academy community is excited to discover what our students design and produce within it. And, Mr. Morrison is ready to take on the challenge to show us what is possible.

On Thursday, August 25, over 100 Kemper Science and Engineering benefactors joined 50th Anniversary Campaign donors and 1963 Society members at a private party to experience the new facility first-hand and celebrate their important contributions. Upper School students demonstrated the new equipment while faculty members answered questions about the new space. During a champagne toast offered to guests in test tubes, President Carol Klimas thanked families for their extraordinary generosity to the school.

Supporting the first new building at Lake Ridge Academy in more than a decade, donors made gifts totaling more than $3 million for Kemper Science and Engineering. In keeping with the school’s strong fiscal mandate, 25% of every gift was directed to an endowment fund to reduce the additional operating strain and help maintain the building going forward. In addition to outright building gifts from more than 100 families, other donors provided gifts of equipment and supported Gift from the Heart at the 2015 Auction Gala to fund additional equipment needs for the expanded engineering workshop and technology for the building.

JOSHUA SCOFIELD ‘15The University of Chicago ‘19Men’s Soccer

Joshua Scofield, a three-letter varsity athlete at Lake Ridge Academy, completed his freshman year at the University of Chicago as a member of the men’s soccer team, and is considering a major in molecular engineering. His current success stems from his career on the Lake Ridge Academy boys soccer team, where he scored 56 goals

and compiled numerous awards including All-State. He also was named the senior male athlete of the year and earned the personal best core value award.

Transitioning to college was relatively easy for Joshua. He explains, “My collegiate athletic experience, thus far, has been essential to my college experience. Initially being on a team gave me an immediate set of good friends before school even started, which created an instant social outlet and support system that other entering freshmen don’t have. Soccer not only gives a structure to my day that allows me to organize and plan my weeks, it is also a good balance to the rigor of academics.” He continues, “At Lake Ridge Academy, I learned how to balance college-level coursework expectations while being an athlete.” During his first year of collegiate play, Joshua had 18 starts as left back and received an honorable mention in the University Athletic Association conference.

For several decades, Lake Ridge Academy has graduated student-athletes that chose to continue their athletic careers at colleges and universities across the country. Our alumni have proven that the preparation to succeed in sports and academics in college truly begins in high school and that their experience in the classroom and on the field, court or track at Lake Ridge Academy was critical to their post-graduation achievements. They are grateful to have honed skills like time management, leadership, motivation and collaboration at Lake Ridge Academy, which they have found to be imperative in their lives as collegiate athletes and in developing rewarding career paths after school.

KACI GREGORY ‘14Muhlenberg College ‘18Women’s Track & Field

Kaci, who started at Lake Ridge Academy in second grade, excelled in track and field here, qualifying three times for the Ohio indoor state track and field championships and placing fifth in the competition’s 400-meter race. She holds the school records for the 400-meter and 800-meter races. During her junior and

senior years, she held MVP and highest point scorer honors for the track and field team. She also was recognized as the outstanding senior female athlete and received the personal best core value award.

Currently in her junior year as a double major in French and media communications at Muhlenberg College, Kaci has continued her success on the track and in the classroom. In the distance medley, Kaci and her team placed fourth at the Outdoor Centennial Conference and qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference National Meet. She ran the second leg on the 4 X 800 relay team which took fourth out of ten teams at the Centennial Conference Indoor Meet.

She mentions, “My team and I work hard on the track but never forget that we are students first and foremost. This student-athlete mentality is one that I acquired while in high school, and it has carried into my college career.”

Kaci entered Muhlenberg College as the recipient of the Sidney G. Weikert Scholarship, which is awarded to the incoming freshman who displays the most enthusiasm to learn and contribute to campus life inside and outside of the classroom. She is studying abroad at Institut Américain Universitaire College in Aix-en-Provence, France this fall.

SAMANTHA POTOCZAK ‘12Lafayette College ‘16Women’s Soccer

A five-sport athlete at Lake Ridge Academy, Samantha was well-known in the athletics department. As captain, Samantha helped lead the Royals soccer team to back-to-back district championship games, including one win. She was also a member of National Honor Society, the Mock Trial team and performed the lead

role in the Upper School musical.

Samantha chose Lafayette College because it offered a competitive Division 1 soccer team while highly valuing academics. “Lake Ridge Academy was a huge factor in my acceptance. Athletics at Lake Ridge were very similar to those here. Our team was competitive, yet we were constantly reminded that our studies were extremely important.” She continues, “I feel college athletics made me a very well-rounded person, allowed me to grow as an individual and increased my leadership skills.”

Last fall, Samantha, again serving as team captain, experienced one of the most rewarding highlights in her soccer career when her team defeated the Naval Academy on Senior Day. Samantha was named to the Dean’s List four times, earned the Patriot League Academic Award each semester, and was one of just three students selected within her major to complete an honors thesis.

Samantha graduated last spring with a B.A. in international affairs and film/media studies and is now a production assistant in the Content Associate Program at ESPN.

MARY SHIMKO ‘10Brandeis University ‘14 / Smith College ‘16Women’s Soccer

Mary, a seasoned three-sport athlete at Lake Ridge Academy, was a stand-out soccer player and was essential to the school’s first district championship win in girls’ soccer. She earned All-Ohio selection in soccer and basketball, along with numerous mentions at the county, district and Cleveland level. She was also named

Division IV Lorain County Basketball Player of the Year in her junior and senior years.

Mary reflects that, “Lake Ridge provided me with the academic foundation necessary to excel at both Brandeis University and Smith College. Whether I was sitting in Dr. Mozumdar’s history class or training on the soccer field with Coach Tara Bowen, I was always challenged to pursue excellence.”

At Brandeis University, Mary was a two-time captain who helped lead the women’s soccer team to the elite eight in the 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament, the program’s best finish in school history. Mary earned three Academic All-UAA honors and was a recipient of the James McCully Award, which is presented to Brandeis seniors who best exemplify character, dedication and good sportsmanship.”

Last spring, Mary completed her master’s degree in exercise and sports studies at Smith College. Her passion for soccer has turned into a career as Mary will be the assistant coach for the College of the Holy Cross women’s soccer team this fall.

NATHAN KAFITY ‘09Ohio Wesleyan University ‘13University of Toledo College of Medicine ‘18Men’s Cross County and Men’s Track and Field

Nathan played soccer and was an accomplished distance runner at Lake Ridge Academy. He holds the school record for the mile and two-mile race and also took eighth place in the mile event at the State competition. Competitive athletics has given Nathan many things in life, including important personal relationships.

“My Lake Ridge Academy coaches, Coach Gregory and Coach Crowell, were my first true mentors. As I get older and understand more, I think back on everything they did for me and I will always treasure that.”

Nathan continued his running career at Ohio Wesleyan University as a member and team captain of the cross country and track and field teams. Excelling in two collegiate athletic programs, along with earning a B.A. in zoology as a pre-medicine major with a minor in chemistry is not an easy task. He credits his participation in sports for his academic success and says that, “One cannot excel in distance running without learning self-discipline, patience, moderation, and perseverance. My GPA would have been significantly lower if I had not run in college or high school.”

At Ohio Wesleyan, Nathan amassed numerous awards and recognition including qualifying for national competition and being named an Academic All-American. Today, Nathan is pursuing a medical degree at Toledo College of Medicine.

SARAH WRIGHT ‘09California Institute of Technology ‘13Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences ‘20Men’s Soccer, Women’s Basketball and Track and Field

Sarah has achieved a very rare accomplishment – being a three-sport college athlete. Her stamina to compete in each season and be an exceptional student began during her years at Lake Ridge Academy. Here, she participated in soccer, basketball, and track and field. Sarah received the president’s award and

the outstanding senior athlete award, while also serving as student senate president and being named a National Merit Commended Scholar. Sarah thanks Mr. Gregory for encouraging her to pursue California Institute of Technology (Caltech). “I decided to apply purely due to athletics. Caltech does not give preferential admission for athletes, but I had the advantage of working with the basketball coach and the school’s admissions counselor when building my application.”

At Caltech, Sarah played on the three teams – men’s soccer (the school did not field a women’s team), women’s basketball, and track and field. Sarah set a new school record for the heptathlon and is in the top ten in all-time performances in twelve events. Sarah was the only female

soccer player to ever score a goal against a full-side male team in NCAA Division III. She was named Caltech’s Outstanding Athlete in 2013.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in bioengineering, Sarah began her career in research at City of Hope, a comprehensive cancer center outside of Los Angeles. This August, she will begin medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.

EVAN SEVERS ‘09College of Wooster BA ‘13University of Michigan MA‘15Men’s Soccer

Playing sports at Lake Ridge Academy was one of Evan Severs’ favorite memories, and as a three-letter varsity athlete he certainly had many opportunities to be a team player. Evan participated in soccer, basketball and baseball as a Royal, earning many All-County and All-Cleveland awards. “Being a student-athlete enabled me

to build great friendships with my teammates, and we were able to be very competitive considering the relatively small size of the school. Knowing how to be part of a team can be useful in all facets of life, whether it be sports, a business team, or a community group.”

Evan continued his athletic career on the men’s soccer team at the College of Wooster. As a three-year starter for the team, playing soccer in college allowed him to make new friends and reinforce the importance of time management. “Participating in athletics allowed me to truly realize how crucial managing your time really is, both as a student and in the workforce,” he said. “Our college matches required overnight trips. Keeping on top of your studies and coordinating with professors about missed classes was of paramount importance. Coming from Lake Ridge, where I had to balance athletic commitments with a demanding educational experience, I found myself more aptly suited to handle the difficulties collegiate athletics provided.”

Evan graduated from the College of Wooster with a B.A. in urban studies and earned an M.A. in urban planning from the University of Michigan. Evan is now working for Urban Design Ventures, a small consulting firm in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Peter Eckendorf has joined the staff of Lake Ridge Academy as the Athletic Director. Mr. Eckendorf brings nine years of experience in working within high school athletic departments and the professional sports marketing industry. Most recently, he was the Assistant Director of Athletics at Cleveland Heights High School. In his new role, Mr. Eckendorf will be promoting an athletic culture at the school that emphasizes the journey that each sport program takes during a season, encouraging student athletes to gain life skills and lessons from competition. He will fulfill the traditional duties such as scheduling games, budgeting, and ensuring OHSAA compliance.

An athlete himself, Mr. Eckendorf is a magna cum laude graduate of Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science in sports management. There, he played Division I soccer as a goalie for four years. Transitioning his career from the sports industry to high school athletics made sense to him early on. “Having spent the other part of my time around the academic realm of the sports industry, I felt my passion for sports would be best suited giving back to student athletes. I got more out of being around young athletes and watching them progress academically and athletically than anything else, and I knew I wanted to be a part of that process.”

Mr. Eckendorf’s excitement for his new position at Lake Ridge Academy is palpable. “The sense of community here is unrivaled. While others may attend schools simply for the name, it’s apparent that everyone is here because they WANT to be here,” he said. “From students to teachers to administrators, every person I’ve spoken with holds Lake Ridge near and dear to their heart.”

He looks forward to building upon the current athletic program and doing all he can to showcase the talent of our students. “I’m excited to be part of a new family and look forward to helping students grow, achieve, and succeed knowing they had the best experiences possible while here at Lake Ridge.”

ALEXANDRA HANSEN ‘08Carnegie Mellon University BS ’12 MS ‘13Women’s Basketball

At Lake Ridge Academy, Alexandra was a three-time All-State girl’s basketball player recognized for scoring over 1,000 points during her high school basketball career. As an exceptional three-letter varsity sport athlete, she received the outstanding senior athlete award.

Alexandra attended Carnegie Mellon University and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in decision science, policy and management and a master of science in healthcare policy and management. She excelled in the classroom and on the court at this prestigious school earning a 4.0 GPA while also serving as the women’s basketball team captain. She received numerous awards for both her academic and athletic talent.

It was her participation in athletics at Lake Ridge Academy and in college that Alexandra said directly impacted her success as a student, leader, and teammate. “I am so thankful that Lake Ridge encourages students to do it all. I learned to be a self-advocate for my own learning and growth as the teachers, coaches and administration at Lake Ridge treated students like equals and thought partners. Participating in athletics taught me how to be a hard-working and team-oriented colleague, break through barriers, move on from failures and celebrate success.”

Following graduate school, Alexandra completed an administrative fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic and worked as the assistant administrator for the Department of Critical Care Medicine. She moved to Baltimore in 2015 and is currently a senior project manager for the department of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

A current faculty member and family made a $25,000 campaign gift to help successfully launch a third center of excellence. Supporting Center Director Angela Perantinides, this campaign gift helped to launch the Center for Global Citizenship in its inaugural year.

Like the other two centers of excellence, the Center for Global Citizenship is a K-12 program that embodies Lake Ridge Academy’s mission. This Center’s mission is to provide students with opportunities to become proficient participants in the increasingly economically, politically, and culturally interconnected world.

Parents Association Gift

The Parents Association graciously supports our students and teachers throughout the academic year through their tireless volunteerism, participation in events, grants to our teachers for special classroom projects, and monetary donations offered from the fundraising events that they sponsor throughout the year. In 2015-2016, the Parents Association funded the concrete pavement of new basketball and four-square courts on the playground, and their gift was supplemented by the Jones Family with brand new basketball hoops.

Carnegie Mellon University in 2015. Instead of going the traditional route with her engineering degree, she decided to combine her technical skills with her love of working with people to start her career. Alyssa encouraged students to celebrate their inner nerd.

LIV MIRALDI ’13 spoke about her career as a recording artist, songwriter, and co-founder of 3806 Entertainment. Liv graduated from Lake Ridge Academy’s School of Fine Arts with a vocal concentration and is currently a songwriting major and Italian minor at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2015, she launched the music project LIV with her producer and business partner, Jonathan Timberlake. Although she is doing what she loves as an artist, Liv shared with students what it means to be an artist, which involves a great deal of hard work that is not always glamorous. Liv had to learn production, music publishing, copyright law, marketing, branding, modeling, performing, recording, and more. Still, Liv encouraged students to follow their passion and do what they love.

ALEXIA VOUTSIOTIS ’07 arrived early to meet with Mr. Patrick Smith’s freshman honors biology class to talk about her career in public health. Alexia is a training coordinator for Brigham & Women’s Health Care eCare Training. Alexia attended Tufts University and holds a Master’s Degree in health policy and management from Boston University School of Public Health with a focus on

On Friday, March 4, 2016, Lake Ridge Academy Upper School students gathered in the Bettcher Convocation Center for Career Day. The students had the unique opportunity to listen to and interact with professionals from five different fields. The speakers included four Lake Ridge Academy alumni and one current Lake Ridge Academy parent. The speakers began their day by joining faculty members for lunch, and then participated in a panel discussion with Upper School students.

AMY BIRCHER, proud mother of Josh ’24, shared her incredible story of becoming a business owner. Amy is the president and founder of MMI Textiles, Inc. As an expert in the textile industry, Amy was exposed to the field as early as age 7 when she began cutting fabric swatches for her dad and stepmom when they owned and operated National Dye Works (NDW) in Chicago, IL. As President and Founder of MMI Textiles, Inc., Amy is responsible for the sales and operations of the company, which has experienced incredible growth since its doors opened in 1997. In 2007, her company purchased her family’s business. She has received the prestigious honor of winning the Weatherhead 100 award four years in a row, which is a Northeast Ohio award given to the fastest growing small businesses.

Amy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in textiles from West Virginia University in 1993 and currently sits on the board of directors for both the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) and the Industrial Fabrics Foundation (IFF). She is also a member of the Visiting Committee at the WVU Davis College where she works with peers and current students to guide them in current market and industry trends.

ALYSSA COOK ’11 spoke about her career as a technology consulting analyst for Accenture, a leading global professional services company that provides a broad range of services and solutions in strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations. Alyssa earned her B.S in chemical engineering from

health policy and delivery systems improvement. Alexia previously served as a Healthcare Consultant at Hayes Management Consulting. Today, she coordinates the Epic training for all new hires, transfers and clinical rotators at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital.

Students enjoyed watching a short video of MATTHEW ZALESKI’S ’09 work. Matthew is a director, producer and actor for TLS Film Productions a production company he co-founded. Matthew started his film degree in Australia and finished in Hollywood. Recently, they successfully financed their first feature length action film, Red Acquisition. Matthew shared many stories about his time at Lake Ridge Academy including stories about his favorite teacher, Mr. Byron Fouts. He thanks Mr. Fouts for always believing in him and often staying after school to help with his films.

Following the panel discussion, students got the opportunity to personally talk with the speakers. The group then joined President Carol Klimas for a hard hat tour of the new Kemper Science and Engineering building.

Christopher “Biff” Baker ’86 Biff celebrates his 30th reunion this year and has remained close to Lake Ridge Academy. He serves on the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee, supports the Annual Fund as a 1963 Society member, and regularly attends annual auctions and

other school events. Together with his father, Bill Baker, and their investment company, Winfield Associates, they have sponsored and grown the Lake Ridge Academy Golf for the Endowment outing to a full flight of golfers through their decade-long sponsorship.

The Donald W. Kaatz ’70 Alumni Award honors alumni of Lake Ridge Academy who have made a significant impact on the school and exemplify Lake Ridge Academy’s core values of Integrity, Respect, Scholarship, and Personal Best.

Byron Fouts Byron Fouts is one of the founders of Lake Ridge Academy’s Fine Arts Department and taught at the school for 39 years. When he first started at Lake Ridge Academy, Byron taught all K-12 art and later focused his visual arts teaching in the Middle and Upper

Schools. Students loved his classroom for its supportive, relaxing, and inspiring atmosphere where they felt free to express their ideas and confident to share their work.

The Wilfred Hemmer Headmaster Award honors retired faculty members for their dedication to Lake Ridge Academy.

Chann and Ed Spellman During the years that their children, Sam ’11, Jack ’14 and Sophie ’17, have attended the school, their formal volunteerism included roles on the Board of Directors, Auction Gala, 50th Anniversary Committee, and Parents Association. In addition

to their appointed roles, however, their leadership, influence and love of the school extends far deeper into our community and continues to make an impact that will benefit generations of students and their families for many years to come.

The Founders Award honors parents of alumni, donors and friends of the school who provide outstanding service to the school and its greater community and/or whose contributions ensure the success of Lake Ridge Academy’s mission.

1970Chris Pfeil’70 and Cathy Thompson’70 along with their family and many Lake Ridge Academy alumni, parents, parents of alumni and friends celebrated their mother’s 100th birthday on July 29, at the Cleveland Yacht Club. Guests included Carol and Dan Klimas, Susie Martindale, and Nan Gregory; alumni parents Louise Monson, Paula Mulligan, Kammy Essi, Barbara Swasey, Ruth Pangrace, Jill Oatey, Lynn Andrews and Charley Simmelink; and alumni Jane Mercer Ramsay ‘70, Carrie Pfeil ‘07, and Lee Pfeil ‘05.

1994Gabie Catana ‘94 is opening a performing arts center in Avon, Ohio. After graduation, Gabie headed to The Boston Conservatory and received a B.F.A. in Musical Theater. In 1998, she went to New

York City to audition and perform. In 2007, she relocated to Avon and has taught music and drama in Catholic education and privately. In October, she will be opening Avon Performing Arts, which will offer musical theater and acting classes to children.

1999Tim Soliman ’99 married Jennifer North on April 2, 2016 in a beautiful ceremony attended by many Lake Ridge Academy alumni. 2001Michael Sertich ‘01 and Julia Bilz Sertich ‘01 welcomed their son, Anthony John, on May 6, 2016.

Arriving a month early (and missing his

mom’s birthday by just 2 days), AJ weighed in at 6 lb. 6 oz. and was 19” long. While the Sertich household is growing, Michael continues to expand his Jimmy John’s franchises throughout Lorain County. The Elyria store has been open for more than two years, and an Amherst location is expected to open in the coming months.

Kari (Sommer) Halko ‘01 and her husband, Tom, welcomed Brooke Audra Halko on December 8th, 2015. Brooke adores her big brother Ethan, and Ethan loves to help take care of her! Ethan ’29 started Kindergarten at Lake Ridge Academy as a third-generation student this fall.

Sarilyn (Swayngim) Ivancic ‘01 and her husband, Steven, welcomed their second child, Evelyn Claire, on August 5, 2016. Evelyn joins her big brother, Henry, who is 2 years old at their home in Pittsford, New York.

Megan Gardner ‘03 married Dave McNamee on September 10, 2016 at her family’s lake home in North Hero, Vermont surrounded by friends and family. Among the guests were fellow alumni, Katarina Gardner ‘07, Katrina Escuro ‘03, Caitlin Whiteman ‘03, Alison Bilz ‘03, Shaud Tavakoli ‘03, Lukman Ahmed ‘03 and Tom Rafferty (from middle school). The two met while attending American University in Washington, D.C. Megan graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in May 2015 and is an associate attorney at Rich, Intelisano & Katz, LLP in Manhattan. Dave is the director of public relations for Expedia group. Dave and Megan currently reside in New York City.

2005Lee Pfeil ‘05 competed in the Napa triathlon with his sister, Carrie ‘07. In June, Lee spent four days trekking to Machu Picchu over the 15,000’ Salkantay Pass.

She works as the deputy division chief of the strategy division providing strategic and international relations advice on a range of issues from regional cooperation to weapons of mass destruction.

Ryan Lucas ‘03 was married to Brunswick High School theatre educator and actress Cassandra Neumann on July 9. The two met while acting in a play with Cleveland’s roving performance company, Theater Ninjas. The couple resides locally in North Royalton, OH. Ryan is the marketing associate for the 2015 Tony Award recipient, Cleveland Play House. He was honored to have many Lake Ridge Academy alumni and mentors (including Mark and Maureen Johnson) in attendance at the wedding and in the bridal party.

TJ Bittel ’03 and his wife, Stacy, welcomed their son, Rafe Jameson Bittel, on July 18, 2016. TJ jokes that Rafe got TJ’s impatience gene and opted for the change

in scenery two months ahead of schedule weighing in at 4 lbs. 5 oz.

2002Eugenia Chahda ‘02 and her husband, Michael Celi, welcomed a healthy baby girl, Juliana Marie Celi, on June 4th, 2016. Eugenia and Michael are absolutely thrilled and overjoyed.

The couple currently lives in Key West, FL where Ryan works as a fishing guide on a popular fishing charter and Kayla works as a wedding planner. Ryan and Kayla plan to wed in Ohio on Sept 22, 2018.

Sara Mays ‘08 married Timothy Rimnac on September 4, 2016 in Chicago where they first met and currently live. Sara is a photo editor for United Airlines, and Timothy is a database

marketing analyst at The Chicago Tribune and is finishing up his master’s degree in predictive analytics at Northwestern University.

2010Kate Moreno ’10 will attend New York University Steinhardt in the fall. Kate will be working towards her master’s degree in art therapy. Kate earned her

undergraduate degree in fine art and English with a minor in psychology. Kate hopes to become an art therapist specializing in women’s issues.

Garrett Blaha ‘10 married Taryn Murray on September 17, 2016. The Moreno family attended the wedding and Lake Ridge Academy senior Kevin Moreno ‘17 was a groomsman. Garrett and Kevin met at Lake Ridge Academy when they were paired up as buddies during Holiday Project when Kevin was in second grade and Garrett was a freshman. The two families have remained very close through the years. Garrett and Taryn will reside at

their new home in Hudson. Taryn is in her third year of medical school, and Garrett is the VP of The BOLI Group.

2011Alyssa Cook ‘11 was married to Zachary Viggers on August 20, 2016 in Rocky River, OH with her brother, Bradley Cook ‘13, as a groomsman. Also in attendance were Alyssa’s Lake Ridge Academy teacher, Ed Leonard, and friend, Jacob Dempsey ‘13. Alyssa is currently working as a consulting analyst at Accenture in Columbus, OH, and Zachary is a student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN.

Terra Soto ’11 recently received the Blue Sky Therapy Future Leader award. The Blue Sky Therapy Future Leader award is offered through the Master of Occupational Therapy program

at The University of Findlay and recognizes two students who display the potential to be strong leaders in the field. Blue Sky Therapy generously donates a tuition credit to the award recipients. Terra is currently in her final year of the traditional Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program at The University of Findlay. This past April, Terra graduated with her undergraduate degree in health sciences with an occupational therapy emphasis and two minors in gerontology and psychology. During her last year of graduate school, she will serve as an occupational therapy teaching assistant while working on a research grant incorporating occupational therapy practitioners in a palliative care model designed for the Alzheimer’s community.

Taylor Soto ’14 has recently been accepted into the GALA (Global Adventures for the Liberal Arts) program at Butler University. Each year, Butler takes a selective group of

students to a different region of the world. During the spring semester of 2017, Taylor will study abroad in Greece, Italy, Morocco, and Spain. GALA is a unique program at Butler. Instead of studying in only one country for an entire semester, students are able to travel to four while being taught by their own Butler professors. The GALA program was just recognized as one of the top 50 study abroad programs in the country.

Jacob Belardo ‘14 traveled to South Africa this summer to sing in honor of Nelson Mandela with the University of Michigan’s Men’s Glee Club. The club showcased their well-praised melodies “Glory” and “Seven Last Words.” This year the glee club worked on filming a documentary titled, Love Life and Loss, which combines choral music and social justice. Jacob is a sophomore at the University of Michigan, majoring in physics and minoring in music. Jacob recently started a cancer research position in a urological oncology lab where he is helping to screen, identify, and mark circulating tumor cells in patients with prostate cancer.

2015Yuna Ishikawa ’15 recently completed an internship at BMW Group at Japan’s national headquarters in Tokyo within the Brand

2013Jay O’Neill ’13 and his cycling crew biked across the country last summer. Jay was on a team of 28 cyclists and 10 crew members. They biked from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. while raising money and awareness for people with disabilities as well as the organizations that care for them. Jay’s group is one of three to make the trip across America. The event is called the Journey of Hope and is organized by the Ability Experience. 2014Sabine Decatur ‘14 spent her summer in New York City working for an off-Broadway theatre company, doing research on LGBTQ history and stage

managing a professional production at the NYC Fringe Festival. A rising junior at Yale, Sabine has been able to explore many different fields and is majoring in African American studies. Sabine has become a student activist on campus and participates in theatre and dance as an advocate for diversity in the arts. This year, she will be the president of Yale’s tap dance society and will serve as the social consciousness associate for the Yale Dramatic Association.

Caleb Mayer ‘14 spent his summer as an undergraduate researcher for the National Science Foundation (NSF) at Winthrop University in South Carolina. The research focuses on math and biology and will be presented at a national math conference in Atlanta, Georgia in January. Caleb is currently a student at Haverford College

Hadden Klima ’11 graduated with a B.A. in History from Baldwin Wallace University in May 2016. She is now enrolled in a master’s program in Leadership in Higher Education at the same

university. As part of her program, she is interning in the office of registration and records at Baldwin Wallace. She is due to complete the program in May 2018.

2012Emily Glor ’12 graduated with honors from Heidelberg University with a major in biology and a

minor in chemistry in May. Emily is now attending The Ohio State University College of Dentistry as a member of the Class of 2020. Emily is excited for the next four years and to have Rahil Patel ’12 as a classmate again in dental school.

Jordan Guidish ‘12 married Mark Fair on July 23, 2016 in Alliance, OH in a small ceremony followed by a reception comprised of their closest family and friends. Jordan and

Mark currently reside in Cincinnati, OH and are planning a Caribbean honeymoon for this coming winter

Lauretta Frances Hayes of Elyria died on January 26, 2016. She was a 1944 graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and had been a member of the community since moving here from Cleveland in 1952 with her husband, Roy. Lauretta was an accomplished violinist, an avid bridge player and loved to read and present book reviews. She was a fun, generous person with a great sense of humor. She loved traveling and entertaining and was passionate about sports and politics. Her five children attended Lake Ridge Academy, and she and Roy were both active volunteers and served on the Board of Trustees.

Ann Medwetz, beloved mother of Jeannie Medwetz ’17, passed away suddenly on March 4, 2016. Ann was the director of development communications at Oberlin College. Prior to Oberlin, she spent 15 years in the corporate world as a marketing and communications manager, including nine years at the David Group. She is remembered by friends and colleagues for her generous spirit, quick mind, easy smile, contagious laughter, and, most especially, her profound love

of family. She was full of energy and vitality and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Mary Zinn, former chemistry teacher and science department chair, passed away on February 16, 2016. Mary has two grandchildren who currently attend Lake Ridge Academy – Sebastian Lagasse ‘23 and Oliver Lagasse ‘20. Their mother and Mary’s daughter, Jennifer Zinn Lagasse, graduated from Lake Ridge Academy in 1986. Mary came to Lake Ridge Academy in 1978 and taught until 2002. She taught chemistry, life science,

physical science, algebra, AP chemistry and senior ethics.

Jean Barth passed away on July 2, 2016. She and her husband, Al, were active volunteers at Lake Ridge Academy even during her busy career that spanned over 20 years with MetroHealth Medical Center. As a member of the executive leadership team at Metro, she helped to establish the first life flight helicopter system in the nation. She also worked to establish holistic care for patients in the burn ward and co-founded the gerontology department. Jean and Al supported four children at Lake Ridge Academy - Jamie ’70, Glenn, Paul ’77 and Carolyn.

division of MINI Japan. In collaboaration with various external agencies, she planned two national branding events, each having over 10,000 participants. Yuna is currently a sophomore at Wellesley College double-majoring in economics and East Asian studies. Yuna is still very passionate about the violin; she performs with and serves on the executive board of the MIT Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her violin, she gives campus tours as a Student Assistant at the Office of Admission and communicates individually with over 150 alumnae weekly on behalf of the Wellesley Fund.

Alexis Tellerd ’15 was named to the ACRA (American Collegiate Rowing Association) All-Freshman 2016 boat her freshman year at High Point University. New to the sport, Alexis is a coxswain, the position responsible for steering the boat and watching her speed coach and cox-box to ensure they are all at the right speed. She runs practices, motivates the team, and, most importantly, keeps them safe. Alexis says rowing is the most painful yet incredibly graceful-looking sport requiring a huge amount of energy. Her team’s best race was at the Head of the Hooch (Chattanooga, TN), where they placed 11th out of 44. Alexis won gold in Womens Novice Eight in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (SIRA’s//Oak Ridge, TN). She was the first novice coxswain to win gold at a regatta from HPU. Along with rowing, Alexis made the dean’s list both semesters and is a business administration major with a Spanish and finance double minor.

Kimberley Grayce Roach ’21 beloved daughter of Mark and Mary Roach and loving sister to Jake, Chase, Austin and Kenzie passed away suddenly on March 31, 2016. Grayce found joy in riding horses and volunteering at the local APL. She loved caring for animals in the hope of one day becoming a veterinarian. Grayce played basketball, volleyball and was in the choir. Grayce’s kind spirit, good heart, and positive outlook on life left an indelible impression on those who were fortunate to be a part of her life.
