THE SHEPWELL SCHOOL TERMLY NEWSLETTER THEE SHEPWELL TIMES ISSUE 03 SUMMER 2015 Welcome to the final newsletter of this academic year. It has been a very eventful and productive year. The school had a very successful OFSTED inspection in November and the whole school pulled together to showcase the excellent work school does to ensure that the young people at Shepwell learn and develop to their maximum potential. The year has passed quickly and the pupils have worked extremely hard and achieved so much. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the pupils for all their efforts and achievements and thank all parents for their continuous support of the school and their children. I am grateful to staff and governors for their commitment and loyalty so generously offered to Shepwell and I am delighted that Shepwell has enjoyed another successful year where pupils have achieved well. Thank you also to you as parents, as I feel very privileged to have had the enthusiastic and unstinting support so willingly given throughout the year. We would like to say goodbye to our Year 11 pupils and to those pupils starting back at mainstream school in September. Good luck for the future and we will of course miss them enormously. In April we said goodbye to Mrs Keen who retired after many years loyal service to Shepwell and would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Keen for her valuable contribution to the school as teacher on site, in the home and, at the Manor Hospital. Thank you also to Mrs Wills who will retire at the end of term after many years as admin officer at Shepwell. Mrs Wills is a hard working and dedicated member of staff. We wish Mrs Keen and Mrs Wills well for the future and hope they both enjoy a well deserved, peaceful and relaxing retirement. As Headteacher I am proud to lead Shepwell School with dedicated staff and a supportive community committed to excellence in education, eager about coming to school, engaged in their learning and able to articulate their views in a polite, respectful and harmonious way. However, if you have a suggestions or comments on how we can improve the service we offer please feel free to contact me or use the suggestions box in reception. Please remember that every Wednesday morning between 7.45am and 11.00am I’m available without having to make an appointment to meet with parents face or face or, on the telephone. I hope you have a very happy summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you next term on Thursday 3 rd September 2015. Shepwell Goes Digital!

Here at the Shepwell School we had an internet safety day on how to keep safe when using the internet and the consequences involved. The instructor was called Glyn Taylor-Marshall who is from WACC (Walsall Adult Community College) and it took place on the 27th of February. I remember making posters about online internet safety. The things we covered were online bullying, sharing confidential information and photographs. “I learnt how to stay safe online,” says a Key Stage 3 student. We were all put in groups of 5’s to 7 and we all had to each make-up our own per formance for our presentations. Some people did raps, others did poems while others did a role play. We each had to perform our poster and we each learned something on internet safety.

The Shepwell School has introduced a new digi-

tal visitor’s management system. It is a more

reliable way of signing in and signing out. One

of the Year 11 student says “It’s a brilliant way

of making things tidier and neater instead of

using paper”. Visitors to the Shepwell School

use the digital system to sign in and it prints out

their own visitors badge. The system was

purchased from Edit Limited who then donated

an IPad to the school as a thank you for our

business. So thank you the IPad will be put to

good use.

KS3 Wolverhampton University Music Project

Every Monday afternoon KS3 have been going to Wolverhampton University to work alongside two music lecturers. Mr P r i t c h a r d - J o n e s organised this for them in their Nurture lesson, as they had been working on music with him. Individually or in small groups they created their own music pieces using Apple software. To create their piece they were told that they had to include five elements. The five things they were to include were: Vocals (which were the main element), backing vocals, guitar, bass guitar and drums. Once they had all of these five elements included they were allowed to add whatever they wanted to the piece. They had to choose from different pre-recordings that were sub headed by type with hundreds of varieties. After choosing the different elements they liked, they mixed them together with other ones to create a finished piece of music. Then they were then able to put their recordings onto CD and MP3. After their time working with the

lecturers, KS3

received certificates

praising them on

their hard work.

experience was

enjoyable and pupils

and staff would opt

to do this again.

World book day is a celebration! It's a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and it's also a celebration of reading. World book day is celebrated in over 100 countries all over the world. World book day was first celebrated on the 29th April 1995, and is still being celebrated today.

World book day is usually celebrated within a school environment. Children are often encouraged to dress up as their f a v o u r i t e b o o k characters and bring a certain amount of

money is to raise money for a cer-tain charity. Sometimes children are given book vouchers so that they are more encouraged to go and buy a book. For our world book day event, we dressed up as our favourite characters. As a reward as doing this, everyone was awarded a book token.

World Book Day.

We are working very closely with West Midlands Fire

Service and are working towards a Fire Awareness

course at Willenhall Fire Station. We also have

experienced Fire Fighters come in to our school to

teach us general Fire awareness knowledge. When we

attend the sessions at the Fire Station we get to take

part in practical activities such as running with the

hose which involved the hose being rolled up and us

having to run with it over our shoulder. We also learn

how to climb up and down the ladders in a safe

manner. We have currently done four sessions on CPR,

bleeding, heart attack, choking and general First Aid.

On Friday 19th June students from the Shepwell

School attended Wolverhampton Fire Station to

practice searching and rescuing people in burning

buildings “We were surrounded by smoke and we

were in the dark, we had to search for a cushion and

make our way out; we had a great time it was really

thrilling and we were allowed to wear breathing

apparatus and we would love to go there again”.

Students are currently planning a Fire Scenario to

perform for the final session of the course.

Stars Reward Prize At Shepwell School we have now

introduced our new reward system

with stars. The aim of the game is to

collect as many stars as you can and

the more stars you get the more

rewards you get. Connor Hayward a

year 11 student at Shepwell School

had the most stars and he won an

IPad for being the first student to

gain 50 stars. Right now everyone is

still successfully trying their

hardest to get the most stars

they possibly can receive for

the next prize.

Farewell Year 11 We now say goodbye to Year 11

who have now finished their

exams. We wish them all the best

for the future and we are pleased

they have completed their

Secondary Education and

succeeded. We are very pleased

and overwhelmed on how far all

the Years 11’s have come and

everyone at Shepwell wish them

all a happy and prosperous

future.

World Music Day Students and staff of the Shepwell School went to

the Forest Arts Music Centre to learn how to play

different types of instruments. A few of the

instruments that we played we didn’t know a lot

about them so we learnt all about them and how to

play them. “We were given different roles and

instructions to play and we took part and even

composed a piece of music we had great time and

we hope we can go there and enjoy the experience

again.”

On the 26th March Shepwell School visited Mary Arden’s farm near Stratford where we took part in a falconry display that showcased three different types of birds of prey including flying owls and Harris hawks. We then proceeded to have lunch in the farm cafe and after lunch we went to visit Mary Arden’s house where we partook in a demonstration of a traditional Tudor meal. We also saw animals scattered around the farm as well. Overall it was a excellent time and we would love

to go again

After an assembly on British

traditions, we decided to hold an

afternoon tea. All the staff and

pupils sat together and spent time

talking to each other, drinking tea,

eating cakes & pastries and some

even had eating competitions. It

was a very pleasant afternoon and

everybody enjoyed it.

Walsall Animal Care Charity Event On 25th March, Shepwell School held

a charity event to raise money for

Walsall animal care. One of the

students brought in two very lovely

rabbits named Velvet and Toby. We

also had a cake sale which year 10

students made.

We raised £40.44 which was spent on

hay and wood shavings for the

rabbits at the rescue.
