The campaign’s ICAA Champions program enlists supporters as advocates and role models for active aging. Touchmark resident Don Kiser was featured in a recent issue of The Journal on Active Aging. THE{FULL}LIFE

February 2015

In 2011, the International Council on Active Aging® launched ICAA’s Changing the Way We Age® Campaign to promote positive views of aging. The campaign’s ICAA Champions program enlists supporters as advocates and role models for active aging. Touchmark resident Don Kiser was featured in a recent issue of The Journal on Active Aging. The article is reprinted here.

Don Kiser is “an advocate for living it up.” Born in New Jersey, Don leads an active life at Touchmark. He sings with a group, golfs, exercises, and walks to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer. He enjoys playing bridge and mahjong. And he makes a point of staying up to date with current events. “I’m also involved in different projects,” Don says, “such as our woodworking effort to create toys at Christmas for children in need.”

In fact, Touchmark’s active lifestyle and social connections motivated Don to move to the community after losing his wife seven years ago. “I like the Full Life Wellness & Life Enrichment Program™ here at Touchmark,” he comments—“the objective that through life enrichment activities, you have the opportunity to keep active. This is the way to age comfortably,” he continues. “It’s critical to have something to do.”

Now in his 80s, Don has already done a lot in his life. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946 and served in the occupation force in Japan.

“For a kid coming out of high school, that was an invaluable education,” he shares. Attending Rutgers University on the GI Bill, the Jersey boy then earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering before receiving a master’s degree from Harvard.

A job at Bell Labs in New Jersey followed. A few years later, Don made a move to GTE (formerly General Telephone & Electronics Corporation) in Mountain View, California, where he became an engineer in military electronics. So began his 27-year career with the corporate giant, which culminated in his position as president of GTE Laboratories. “This was a fascinating opportunity that stretched my college-based knowledge to the current state-of-the-art practiced by those scientists,” explains Don. “I loved it! And I carried a broad smile on my retirement day after a few years in the labs.”

The relationship between physical activity and vitality is well documented; however, there is increasing research supporting the positive effects of social interaction on maintaining physical health and a sharp mind. There are numerous ways to stay socially connected such as volunteering, joining clubs and groups, attending church, taking classes, and learning new skills.

We recently posed the following question to Touchmark residents: How has your life been enriched since moving to Touchmark? For those living at Touchmark, the top five responses are likely not surprising: 67% have more friendships; 60% socialize more; 52% worry less; 49% exercise more; and 44% have better nutrition.

Celebrate February, which is Heart Month, and be intentional about your social interaction and building friendships. You will enhance your health and wellness.

“Friendships happen at Touchmark.”

In 1997, after relocating several times in their lives, Don and his wife Hazel moved to Bend. “My wife and I were married 58 years,” he says, “and we raised three children together—a son and two daughters.” The couple also had a busy social life. Hazel loved to cook, and Don would frequently return home from work to a dinner party or “a neighborhood party under way,” he recalls. “It was really a marvelous life.”

Don’s family is widespread, with only his elder daughter living nearby after a recent move from California. Though he travels and sees his family, he found he was lonely living in his house after his wife passed away. “You don’t see neighbors a lot when you’re suddenly single,” he says. Recognizing he needed more of a social connection and attracted by Touchmark’s activities, Don made Touchmark his home. “Being around others is so very important,” he stresses.

Angela Stewart, Touchmark Life Enrichment/Wellness director, first mentioned the ICAA Champions program to Don. “I liked the idea,” he says, “and I support it.”

As a Champion, Don helps promote activities in the community, discussing them with other residents and persuading them to participate. Often, he’ll share his views on a topic. (“It’s important to make things interesting, so people are enticed to go.”) He also encourages his peers to socialize and maintains the activity listings sign near the community’s main gate.

“I feel the importance of and hence a responsibility to support the activities here,” adds Don. “People need to know you care.”

A lifelong hobby on displayJoanne Myers was born and raised in Indiana on a farm that was homesteaded in the early 1800s by her Swedish ancestors (when Indiana was still a territory). Joanne was the oldest girl of five siblings. Her mother wanted her to learn basic home economics—and taught her how to cook, sew, and keep house during her childhood. Joanne also did her fair share of work on the family’s 1000-acre farm that grew wheat, soy beans, corn, and hay.

Joanne was involved in 4H growing up and earned a four-year scholarship to Purdue University, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. During her sophomore year of college, Joanne met Hoss Myers. They married in 1948 and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 2014. Hoss graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and is also a veteran of the United States Navy. Joanne and Hoss raised four children, all of whom have graduated from college and made their parents proud. The couple moved to Bend after retiring.

Since moving to the area, Joanne has become very involved in the quilting community in Central Oregon. She meets weekly with the Nativity Lutheran Church Mount Bachelor Quilters and has joined the quilters group at Touchmark, as well.

Joanne has taught quilting classes and entered her quilts in local and international quilt competitions. “I’ve worn out several sewing machines,” she says. Touchmark Bend Quilters will be hosting a quilt show during the last two weeks of February (see the calendar of events for details), with quilts made by residents, including Joanne, on display.
