Ann Rice surprised Ms Mays with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, given in appreciation of her hard work and dedication to the Women’s Gathering, and it was back to the program.

Annette Hudson and Clarice Lumpkins introduced the following women, whom we were proud to recognize. In her own way, each has demonstrated Loving as Christ loves us, Caring for the community, Sharing the love of Christ, or Serving one another:

Jean Crumpton also acknowledged and presented certificates to a very special group of women who are not members of Cote Brilliante but have given their time, talents and resources to the church. Acknowledged were Rosemary Adams, Cherise Carroll, Alvia Chambers, Carla Drake, Pamela Grant, Rowena Jones, Anna Nicholas, Elsa Whitfield and Angela Wright. Mrs Crumpton pointed out that these women remind us that Loving, Caring, Sharing and Serving are also found outside our congregation.

Lorraine Merchant was recognized by the Women’s Gathering for her 63 years of faithful service to Cote Brilliante Presbyterian Church. Mrs Merchant was one of the first members of the reorganized congregation, and her history of service to many organizations and committees — including Sunday School, VBS, After School Tutoring, Bible Study classes, the Dorcas Circle, the Esther Circle, the Pathlighters, the Media Ministry,

IN REMEMBRANCE

We have experienced the loss of phenomenal women

in the last couple of years. These women are woven into the fabric of Cote Brilliante, and

remain a source of inspiration, strength and courage. Their presence is missed, but the many lessons taught,

encouraging words expressed, love shared, and simple acts of kindness are not forgotten.

The impact they made, and the stories left untold, will continue to unfold for years to come.

An excerpt from

Phenomenal Woman

by Maya Angelou

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need of my care,

‘Cause I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Shelley House Plaque RededicationThe St. Louis REALTORS Foundation, Northside Com-munity Housing and Rebuilding Together St. Louis held a rededication ceremony on January 18th to replace the commemorative plaque that was stolen from the front of the historic Shelley House in 2018. Reverend Crumpton and several members of Cote Brilliante, along with other St Louis civic leaders, were present to witness the rede-dication of the plaque.

The Shelley House stands at 4600 Labadie Avenue. Built in 1906, it was the focus of the 1948 United States Supreme Court case Shelley v. Kraemer, which ruled that judicial enforcement by state courts of racially restrictive covenants violated the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.

The JD Shelley family had moved to St Louis from Starkville, Mississippi in 1930, fleeing racially motivated violence. After renting for a time, the Shel-leys bought the house at 4600 Laba-die in 1945.

Unbeknownst to the Shelleys, the house was under a 1911 covenant that prohibited the sale of the house to anyone of the “Negro or Mongo-lian race” for a fifty-year period. The Shelleys were sued by Louis D Krae-mer, owner of another property on the street, to restrain the Shelleys from taking title to the property. While the trial court held for the Shelleys, the decision was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court in 1946.

The Shelleys appealed to the United States Supreme Court in 1947. The United States Office of the Solicitor General filed, for the first time in a civil rights case, an amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief in support of the Shelleys. The May 3, 1948 decision rendered all racially restrictive covenants unenforceable on the grounds that enforcing them would violate the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The Shelley House was des-ignated a National Historic Land-mark on December 14, 1990.

“This is an exciting day for the Greater Ville Neighborhood, for the City of St Louis, and for every-one who understands that teaching and treasuring our history matters,” US Rep William Lacy Clay said at the January 18th rededication ceremony.

“The historic legal battle to end restrictive covenants in residential housing was a great victory, not just for the courageous family who lived here but for the fundamental principle that in America where you live should not be determined by what you look like.”

At the ceremony, former St. Louis REALTORS President Marc Levinson said that his organization works to overcome this history.

He said, “Replacing the plaque is just a small gesture of our pledge to encourage and practice fair housing in the great communities of St Louis.”—Thanks to Rebecca Rivas of the St Louis American.
