Reading IndexMonday: Starry Safari by Linda AshmanDiscuss what a safari is, where one would go on a safari, who goes on safaris, and what you see when you go on a safari. Focus on the animals of Africa and the equipment used such as binoculars, jeep, tent, boots, etc. This day should be a general introduction to the concepts that will be covered in the week.

Time required: 20-30 minutes

Tuesday: Rumble In The Jungle by Giles AndreaeToday’s focus should be on key jungle animals, what they are like, how they act, what noises they make, and what kind of interactions they have. As this book contrasts night and day in the jungle, get children thinking about what the jungle would be like during each time.

Time required: 10-15 minutes

Wednesday: If I Were A Jungle Animal by Tom and Amanda Ellery

Today’s book is a good follow up to Tuesday’s book. Now that children are familiar with the animals of the jungle, the should be encouraged to pretend to be the animals as it is read. Children’s imagination can run wild as they imagine more and more animals they could be, what they would do if they were that animal, and what life might be like for them.

Time required: 15-30 minutes

Thursday: McBungle’s African Safari by Brenda ParkesStudents will make props for different animal homes (centers) and put them in the proper center. Example, coconuts and bananas for monkey home (trees).

Time Required: varies

Friday: Jungle Drums by Graeme Base This book incorporates all the animals students have been learning about during the week. It focuses on a little warthog who feels insignificant until he is given a magical drum that slowly turns the jungle upside down. Encourage children to be creative and imagine what their drum would do, and remind children of the underlying message that we are powerful and important, no matter our size. This book can be turned into a role playing activity.

Time required: 20-40 minutes

2. “I’m a Little Zebra” (Sung to: “I’m a Little Teapot”)Lyrics:

I'm a little zebra white and black With a bush mane running down my back

I like to gallop and run and play Out on the African plains all day.

3. “Down in the Jungle” (chant)1. Begin with children slapping their hands on their knees, then clapping together to set the

rhythm of the chant.

Lyrics: Down in the jungle

With the beat in your feet, Think of an animal

That you'd like to meet. That you'd like to meet ________!

*(Call out a child's name and have them name a jungle animal)*A (Monkey), A (Monkey) She wants to see a (Monkey)!

2. Have all children imitate the animal that was just called out.

3. Keep repeating and naming different animals for the children to imitate and don’t forget the growls, screeches, and roars! This is also great for large motor indoors on rainy days. You can change it to Down on the Farm if you have a farm theme.

Reading Extensions:

1. Rainforest Animals by Paul HessShow finger puppets as you discuss useful information about the animals included in the story: scarlet macaws, spider monkeys, poison dart frogs, and giant day geckos. This activity is exciting for children, who love finger plays.

Science Extensions:

1. Kapok TreeStart by reviewing the four layers of the rainforest. Then read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. Have the children pay close attention to the size of the tree, how long it takes to grow that large, all the animals that depend on it, etc.  Ask questions about the book, discuss.

2. FrogsBegin with a discussion of where frogs live in the jungle. Explain how frogs can be different sizes and colors, then talk about how some are poisonous.  Rainforest natives rub the tips of their arrows on the skin of poisonous frogs to make the arrows deadly, and that’s where the “poison dart frog” gets its name. Look at pictures of frogs, then have children color, and cut out their own frog to add to a rainforest wall.

3. Layers of the Rainforest by Tricia BadilloThis activity teaches children about the four layers of the rain forest using song, book, and visual aides. At the end children will use vegetables to paint their own rain forest!

Art Extensions:

1. Safari SnapshotsHave a variety of hats, toy cameras, knapsacks, maps, and other safari essentials on hand. Allow the students to dress up (if they aren't already) and pose for the camera!

2. Jungle WearLet the students make their own safari and animal shirts! Purchase inexpensive white T-shirts for the students, provide each child with a piece of waxed paper, paper towel, and a small amount of fabric paint. (Make sure the paint is "jungle colors".) Dip various sizes and shapes if sponges into the paint, and then lightly sponge onto the paper towel a couple of times to remove excess paint. Decorate the shirts to resemble lions, tigers, zebras, etc.

3. Rainy Day ArtworkLet children choose colors of tempera paint to sprinkle on a sheet of construction paper. Then have children go outside to place their paper in the rain for a few minutes (using proper safety precautions and making sure each child has dry clothes to wear). While still outside, have them pick up the paper and tilt it around so that the paint and water run together to form designs. Bring the paper inside to dry.

Math Extensions:

1. Which Monkey Is Different? Children search rows of monkeys to determine which monkey is different. This activity helps children notice details.

Time required: 10 minutes

See attachments for worksheet

2. Jungle CountingIn this activity children count the number of animals in each box and circle the corresponding numeral below. This is a good activity to help children learn one to one correspondence. To do more jungle counting, create a number line made up of jungle animals for children to work with.

Centers IndexABC CenterStudents will work on a variety of jungle-themed alphabet activities. The main activity of the week will be stringing letters on a “jungle vine” to spell sight words, create new words, and explore the sounds of letters. Also included in this center will be jungle books.

Block CenterStudents will use wooden blocks of various sizes to create jungle animals and their habitats. Books will be present to inspire students.

Play-doh CenterStudents will create the different jungle animals that were discussed in class as well as their homes. This center improves fine motor skills while encouraging creativity.

Math CenterThis center will focus on patterns all week. Students will be able to create animal skin patterns (such as black, white, black, white zebra patterns). Students will also have access to a variety of animal counters with which they can create patterns (big/small/big/small, giraffe/elephant/giraffe, etc.)

Puppet CenterStudents can use this area as a creative expression center. They will be able to practice the animal noises they learned, play the part of animals, and role play interactions between various jungle animals.

Dramatic PlayIn this center children will “go on a safari” using the safari jeep created during art time. Some children will play the part of people on a safari and other children will be the animals on the safari.

Attachments/WorksheetsLayers of the RainforestMaterials needed include poster board, vegetables to paint with (or sponges/paintbrushes), rainforest literature, and brown, green, and white paint.

Start out by singing the following song (called “4 Layers”) that will familiarize each child with the names of the layers of the rainforest. It is sung to the tune: "If you're happy and you know it".

There are four layers in the rainforest.4 LAYERS

There are four layers in the rainforest.4 LAYERS!

Forest floor, understory, canopy, emergentThere are four layers in the rainforest.

4 LAYERS!

After children are familiar with the layers of the rainforest, demonstrate creating your own rainforest on poster board.

• Starting at the bottom of the board using a potato or a sponge, paint a brown layer across the bottom and discuss properties of the forest floor - it is dark, damp, full of many dead leaves and vines, spongy, etc.

• Then using cauliflower dipped in brownish/green paint, paint the understory layer above the forest floor while discussing what you would see in the understory - many vines, dense vegetation, not much light, etc.

• Next use a stalk of broccoli dipped in green to illustrate the canopy layer. Its specifics include many green leaves and branches, the most leaves - much of the rain is stopped by the thick foliage, etc.

• Lastly, using a stalk of celery dipped in green, paint a few very tall trees for the emergent layer pointing out that not many trees get to this layer because it takes so long for them to grow. This layer is very sunny because it is the very top!

Safari Jeep Use large cardboard boxes to make jeeps. Have your children paint them and add Styrofoam plate steering wheels and bottle cap knobs. Paint two paper plates yellow for the lights.

Pretend to ride through the jungle and point out animals along the way.

There are many options for props for inside jeep. Paint or use markers to decorate two toilet paper rolls, let them dry, and then tape them together with masking tape. Punch a hole on both sides of the TP binoculars and add some string.  Have your children use them when you go on a classroom safari.

Jungle Animal PuppetsEach student will choose and color a jungle animal’s head and body. Next they will glue the head and body to a paper bag. Once the glue has dried students may use the puppets to practice animal sounds and actions. Students may choose from four different animals, monkey, lion, elephant, and crocodile.

There are four puppet types: crocodile, lion, elephant, and monkey. See patterns on following pages. Original patterns found at h"p://www.first-‐school.ws/theme/cra3s/paper_bag_puppets.htm

Jungle Animal MasksStudents first choose which animal they would like to be: monkey, lion, or elephant. Next students will cut out the mask and then color it. Using a hole-punch, punch out the holes for the masks eyes. Next punch two holes for the string that holds the mask on the students’ heads. Tie a knot in one end of the string and thread it through one hole then thread the other end through the other hole and measure students heads then tie knot.

After each student has a mask they can practice acting like their animal. See mask templates below.
