Machines
Young children are wide eyed and curious about the world around them. They are eager to
understand how things work. Like scientists they observe, touch and manipulate objects. They
formulate ideas and hypotheses and test their theories in processes of exploration and discovery. In
this series of Play School we explore machines. Machines are devices designed to make work
easier. We look at machines in the home, machines we see when we are out and about and
simple machines that can be made from recycled and household materials. We hope this series of
Play School provides lots of interesting opportunities for playing, making and finding out more
about machines.

How to Make a Tinger and Dinger
You will need:
Length of hat elastic, about 30cm
long
Rubber band
Mini Colander
Pencil
Cotton reel
Three jar lids
Three lengths of string, about 15 cm
each
Masking tape
Small cardboard box
Single hole punch
To make the Dinger –
Tie each end of the length of hat elastic to a rubber band, and fit the rubber band over the base
of the mini colander.
Make a winder for the Dinger by pushing a pencil through the cotton reel.
To make the Tingers –
Attach lids to string with masking tape. Tape the strings to the top of the inside of the box, allowing
the lids to dangle.
Use the pencil or a single hole punch to make a hole in the top of the box.
Thread the hat elastic on the Dinger through the hole, from the inside of the box to the outside.
Pull the elastic loop up and place the winder through the loop at the top of the box.
Wind the winder pencil handle round and round, making the elastic tighter and tighter.
Then release and listen as the Tinger and Dinger tings and dings and tings and dings until it stops. A
musical instrument complete!

How to Make a Spinny Tinny
You will need:
Metal cake tin (we used a loaf tin)
1 x piece of plastic cut from a recycled plastic lid (approx. 4cm x 8cm)
Large and small elastic bands
2 x chopsticks
Large tray or tub of water
Place two large elastic bands around the width of the tin. One elastic should be almost near the
centre of the tin, the other at the end of the tin.
Slide the chopsticks through the elastic, one on each side.
Place a smaller elastic band around the end of the chopsticks.
Slide the piece of plastic into the middle of the small elastic. Wind the piece of plastic round and
round and then launch your spinny tinny in the tub of water and see it motor away, powered by its
spinny. There you have it – a spinny tinny!
