WILSONVILLE, Ore. — The 25 th ITS America Annual Meeting & Expo in Pittsburgh will showcase a Battery Backup System (BBS) that will revolutionize the way agencies are able to ensure intersection safety for the traffic industry. Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) just successfully deployed the UPStealth system at the heavily used, remote Biggs Junction interchange which underwent significant changes to improve safety.

Flexible, Nickel-Zinc, Environmentally FriendlyUPStealth passed ODOT’s rigorous testing lab, impressing the traffic engineers. “Other options we looked at were effectively a car battery that tends not to last, so when you really need them to work, they don’t,” says Scott Cramer, ODOT Traffic Signal Engineer. “The UPStealth is super flat and fits within the existing traffic signal controller cabinet. We wouldn’t need to spend money on extra equipment to house the backup battery. There is less maintenance, there should be less cost and a longer battery life, and that appeals to our retrofit projects.” Transportation experts also appreciate the fact the UPStealth does not pose a risk for electrical shock, hazardous material spills and other catastrophes associated with lead-acid batteries. Improving Safety and CongestionThe intelligence of the UPStealth’s Inverter/Controller continuously monitors even slight power fluctuations to help prevent accidents and congestion that can occur with power interruptions or with cabinet knockdowns. All of which can occur at the remote yet busy Biggs Junction interchange, three hours from the nearest ODOT crew.
