Theona asiTashvili
Graphic artist, picture restorer, honoured artist of Georgia(1976), Theona (Georgevna) Asitashvili was born on May 26, 1930 in St. Petersburg. In 1956 she graduated from Tbilisi Academy of Arts with professor I.Sharleman , where later she was engaged in educational work(1959-1960, 1972-1980). She received traning of restoration of works of art at Dresden Art Gallery under the guidance of G.Shvagarus(1960-1964). She worked as a had of depart-ment of easel painting restoration at State Museum of Georgia(1964-1985).
Actuality of theme, refined taste, high standard of mastery are characteristic features of Theona Asitashvili’s works.
Her interests are diverse and include portraits, book illustrations; she is a master of genre and landscape painting.
“Svaneti”(1959), “Musicians”(1963), “Gremi”(1968), series “New Dresden”(1964) and “Kakheti”(1987), which is the best work of the year, are well known pictures of Theona Asi-tashvili.
A great deal of her works have been bought by Georgian Art Museum and Kutaisi Art Gallery, and also are in possession of private collectors of World (Unated States of America, Italy,Germany,Greece and….) and her home town Tbilisi.

inside the Painter’s studio : asserting the Beauty and Romance of Being
It is difficult to fit into a newspaper article entire life and work of a remarkable artist, a refined person de-scending from a distinguished family. Teona Asitashvili’s great grandfather, Petre Tsolle, an officer, was exiled for freethinking from Petersburg to Caucasus. Having settled, he married Julia Tumanishvili. Their son, Pavel Tsolle also married a Georgian, Maria Melikishvili, niece of Petre Melikishvili, the first rector of the Tbilisi State University. Teona’s grandmother worked at Tbilisi Conservatory at the time of professors Zakaria Paliashvili, Anna Tulashvili, and Heinrich Neuhaus, her friend and admirer. From Teona’s childhood memories: once, while staying in Tbilisi, Heinrich visited her grandmother and presented her with a gorgeous bouquet of tea roses…
When Pavel Tsolle passed away at quite a young age, childless Petre Melikishvili assumed responsibility for his family, taking care of niece Maria and granddaughter Natalia. Remembering her childhood, Natalia, Teona’s mother, would recall how the Melikishvilis would host on Thursdays such guests as Akaki Tsetreteli; Alexander Kazbegi; grandmother’s friend Kato Gabashvili; Keke Melikishvili, a writer and the wife of a political essayist Sergo Meskhi, a cousin of Kote Marjanishvili. One episode stuck in mind: once, on one of the Thursdays, Al-exander Kazbegi’s favorite monkey, whom he would frequently take with him to visit his friends, ran away. The monkey was caught on the roof of a house by some boys and brought back to its master.
Teona’s father, Giorgi Asitashvili was a well-known surgeon. His classmates were Egnate Pipia and Avlipy Zurabashvili. Giorgi Asitashvili acquired a great professional experience in general surgery while in Leningrad, hi is listed among notable surgeons of the century in the book Galery of National surgeons : over the century – 1885-1985. In Tbilisi he set up and headed the Osteo-Tuberculosis Surgical Department of S/R Institute of Tuberculosis. Teona’s mother was a teacher of French.
Family traditions as well as personal contacts with intellectuals were the factors that inspired Teona’s artistic talent. She attracted attention at a very young age at an Exhibition of Children’s Paintings – the first prize went to the youngest participant, a third-grade student Teona. From the fourth grade she studies at the Pioneers Palace’s Drawing Study Group lead by Valentin Serov’s student Grigol Meskhi.
By the end of World War II Georgian Ministry of Culture initiated a support program for gifted children. At one of the regularly held at the Pioneers Palace reporting exhibitions Teona’s watercolors enraptured the then Minister of Culture, Rostom Shaduri. Since then Teona’s family would receive a food supply, which helped them survive those hungry years.
In 1950 Teona entered Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts. Her professors were such coryphaei as Joseph Sharleman, Sergo Kobuladze, David Gabashvili, Lado Kutateladze, Vladimir Grigolia, Vasily Shukhaev…
Upon brilliantly graduating from the Academy the young artist immediately immerses herself into creative work. She travels around Georgia together with Elene Akhvlediani, participates in Rene Schmerling’s Svaneti and Dagestan expeditions in search of relics and monuments of Christian architecture. Her impressions about her travels through Racha, Guria, and Dagestan were incarnated in her paintings.
In 1960 she goes to Dresden, Germany, this experience being a major factor in Teona’s formation as an artist and her acquisition of another profession of an easel painting restorer. Notably, the Dresden school of restora-tion is considered the best in the world. Teona worked under the leadership of Heinrich Schwagarus, whom she remembers with warmth and gratitude.
While working at the Dresden Gallery Asitashvili restored tens of paintings of various schools of painting; such work requires exceptional grasp of styles and erudition, leave alone professional expertise.
She had not abandoned painting either and created series of works depicting Dresden in watercolor and in the technique of monotypy. However, homesickness and worries for her ill father made Teona forgo her successful and interesting career at the restoration shop of Dresden Picture Gallery and leave her true friends acquired over the four years in Germany, such famous painters as Lea Grundig and her spouse.
Upon return to Tbilisi Teona is invited by academician Shalva Amiranashvili, the then director of the Tbilisi Museum of Fine Arts, to occupy the post of the Chief Restorer. However, in those post-war years the young restorer had to face great difficulties : absence of paints; her entire equipment comprised of just some used brushes and a couple of filigree sheets… And at the same time it was a colossal responsibility – the Museum of Fine Arts being a repository of national and world masterpieces.
Quite a few paintings went through restorer Teona Asitashvili’s hands since then. Yet the most challenging was her work on Niko Pirosmanishvili’s paintings. They were in a deplorable state : brilliant self-taught painter worked mainly on oilcloth using cheap off-grade oils. But Teona Asitashvili salvaged Pirosmani’s works and restored them to their original brilliance. No less strenuous was restoration of Rubens’ “Rendezvous”, which was

considerably scathed by time, all covered with scissures and black stains… Teona had to not only rejuvenate the canvas, but also conduct a thorough anti-fungi treatment. And a miracle did happen : Rubensian colors vividly resounded in full spectrum.
Already recognized, Teona Asitashvili is invited to the Academy of Fine Arts to chair the Department of Res-toration and Conservation of Easel Painting. More than 30 restoration professionals were raised by her over her tenure at the Academy. Teona Asitashvili, without doubt, has established the school of restoration in Georgia.
With the same rigor she is engrossed in her creative work. It is possible to talk about Teona Asitashvili’s paintings rapturously for hours on end. But I would like to pause on several, my most favorite, of her works. One of them belongs to Kakheti series. Under the strong wind a majestic tree is bending, heavy winter clouds in the background. Far away houses cling fast to the hills as if to protect themselves from chill. The painting is almost monochrome, in blue-brown subdued color. Nonetheless, the impression is not ominously bleak; beauty and hopefulness are conveyed to be characteristic of this season too. The same theme of courageous resistance is expressed in Windy Evening. Severe clouds have gathered pressing on fragile trees; yet they won’t surrender to nascent bad weather… The color gamma is dark, though not dismal. The artist avoids cold colors that would accentuate dispiriting dark mood – full of warm hues, her works sound optimistic.
There is no despondency in her Autumn as well. An alley of old bare trees… A young Kurdish woman is dashingly sweeping away the fallen leaves… It could have been a melancholy sight, but the painting is per-formed in warm ginger-brown tones, and the reddish dress of the street cleaner is beaming a merry flame.
Still lifes are done in similar autumn colors. The term still life is hardly applicable to Teona’s bouquets of autumn leaves and flowers. They bear exceptional splendor and finesse of color. They are an autumn symphony of life.
Motherhood theme is also significant in Teona’s work. She depicts contemporary madonnas in her portraits. They are profoundly emotional. There is calm and happiness of maternal love in them.
High mastery is pervasive throughout her works of various techniques and genres (portraits, still lifes, and landscapes in watercolor, gouache, oil, or monotypy). Yet, watercolor is Teona Asitashvili’s element. I believe she is the best Georgian watercolorist. Her works are displayed in international and national exhibitions, housed in the museums and private collections in many countries of the world.
The artist has had several personal exhibitions. Teona Asitashvili’s merits are recognized and acknowledged. Her work and activities are described in the Dictionary of World’s Artists published in Leipzig; she is awarded a title of Honored Painter of Georgia.
Still her core value is her persistence in asserting the beauty and romance of being.This is an anniversary year for Teona Asitashvili. Sometimes the term anniversary sounds as a resume of
past life. Only not for Teona – she is continuing her intensive work and we are wholeheartedly wishing her new creative achievements.

she founded the school of Restoration
It is easy to understand those who upon entering the Georgian Museum of Arts immediately hasten to-wards Niko Pirosmanishvili’s works. Firstly, it’s his world known awe-inspiring unique talent, and secondly, the paintings themselves, that look as if freshly out of the great primitivist’s brush. Only few know what it took the grand master of easel painting restoration, Georgia’s distinguished painter, Teona Asitashvili and her students to restore those painting to their original brightness.
Teona had been paving her path to her no less than heroic dead in the Arts from her very childhood. A well-known painter Mose Toidze, having seen the eight-year-old girl’s works at a school exhibition in 1941, singled her out as a gifted young artist and even wrote about her in the newspaper Akhalgazrda Komunisti. Then there came years of studies at the Pioneers Palace under the leadership of Valentin Serov’s student and People’s Paint-er of Georgia Grigol Meskhi; Tbilisi Vocational School of Art, and finally Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts. Teona enrolled in the department of Graphics, then under the leadership of a prominent painter and public figure, a tireless contributor to the thriving of Georgian culture, professor Joseph Sharleman. Teona was lucky

to study from such masters as Soso Gabashvili, Lado Grigolia, Vakhtang Japaridze, Vasily Shukhaev … She completed her dissertation - illustrations for Vazha Pshavela’s stories (A Tale of a Fawn, Mousetrap, How Owls Appeared on Earth) - and emerged into the world as a mature and distinctive artist. She worked in publishing houses Sabchota Khelovneba, Sabchota Mtserali, Sablitgami; illustrated commissioned by Sakhelgami Krilov’s Fables and Voinovich’s Gadfly; traveled extensively throughout Georgia and Dagestan, putting her impressions to canvas, creating paintings to be exhibited in Georgia as well as overseas.
And there comes the decisive in her life year of 1960 – Teona starts working with one of the world’s best restoration houses, the Dresden Art Gallery. The Georgian painter’s supervisor was Heinrich Schwagarus, pa-triarch of the art of painting restoration, living annals of the Dresden Art Gallery, savior of many famous canvases. His exactingness was legendary, and the Georgian student assimilated those unrelenting meticulous-ness and precision. She scrupulously studied styles of various artists; learned how to decipher compositions of colors, prepare mixtures and solutions, eliminate cracks and fissures from damaged paintings, and cure them from fungi. In Dresden our compatriot participated in the restoration of more 150 works, including those of such masters as Titian, Durer, Rubens, Van Dyck, Correggio…. She came back home from Germany as the first professional easel painting restorer, and, on invitation of academician Shalva Amiranashvili, Head of the Museum of Fine Arts, took command of a respective Laboratory of Restoration and Conservation Department. At the time there was no school of easel painting restoration in Georgia; the Laboratory had no supplies, and its meager equipment consisted of a couple of shabby brushes. It had to be started from scratch, which implied a huge responsibility – Tbilisi Museum of Fine Arts being one of the repositories of national and international intellectual treasure. Step by step Teona courageously overcame obstacles, and the first results delighted every-one. Georgian newspapers and journals were generously praising her efforts – in the Museum she performed a truly titanic job restoring 300 paintings. Restoration is a tedious task - apart from ingenious workmanship, it requires immense fortitude and patience, sometimes taking a year to restore just a single work. Thus, it took one and a half years to salvage the Rubens’ “Rendezvous” whose paint had been swollen and whole surface covered with tiny bubbles. It took an extremely fine work to revive the brilliant Flemish painter’s work. And how much effort was put into restoration of the misfortunate Sold Love of the great German painter Lucas Cranach! Upon restoration, the canvas would decorate the Museum of Fine Arts; but was later taken to Moscow under the pretext of changing the stretcher. There, some Larisa Yashkina arrogantly redid the restoration work – removed glazing (a superficial thin layer) and thus deformed the painting’s original look. Then the painting was returned to Georgia, stolen from the Museum, found and brought back again…
Teona told me that it had been especially difficult to restore Niko Pirosmanishvili’s works. He painted on oilcloth or cardboard, with simple, cheap paints. Hence his works suffered from destructive mold, shedding of paint, all of which yield with difficulty to restoration. And still, Teona was able to restore to life such master-pieces as Feast with Barrel Organist Datico, Feast in Front of the Two-story House, Gate Keeper, Cook, Kakhe-tia Sagas, Goat… She also shared her experience of working on the restoration of the double-faced icon of King Erekle’s son, Levan. The icon had blackened so that the figures were barely visible; only Teona’s filigree mastery was able to recover it.
In 1971 Teona Asitashvili was invited by her Alma Mater, Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts to chair the Department of Restoration and Conservation freshly established at the Faculty of Painting. She thus got an opportunity to found in Georgia a School of Easel Painting Restoration equipped with state-of-the-art techno-logical achievements of Schwagarus school. Teona’s pedagogical legacy is invaluable – she raised more than 30 qualified restorers: Nana Managadze, Tamar Bakuradze, Evelina, Karseli, John Akhobadze, Boris Skrinnikov, Nino Merabishvili, Nana Chodrishvili….
Alas, the newspaper format makes the story of versatile creative work of an amazing painter incomplete. this article is thus restricted to her contribution to the establishment of the Georgian School of Easel Painting Restoration. That Teona Asitashvili is a wonderful painter of our times is demonstrated by her paintings housed in the museums and private collections of many countries around the world. She is especially brilliant in water-color, but this is yet another topic worthy of yet another article.
