COURSE GOALS:You will have a good idea of how all diatonic triads, some seventh chords, and certain inversions of these behaveidiomatically in tonal music.

You will continue to develop your part-writing skills using diatonic harmonies. You will learn to recognize, part-write, and analyze the four most common sequential progressions in commonpractice music, as well as several other less common sequences.

You will learn to recognize, part-write, and analyze the idiomatic uses of 6/3 and 6/4 chords in tonal music.

    REQUIREMENTS:Regular homework assignments: 25%Weekly quizzes: 50%Final take-home exam: 15 %Class attendance and participation: 10%

Additionally, you will be required to read regularly from the textbook and handouts

Expect homework every day that will take between 2 and 3 hours to complete. Expect 1 to 2 quizzes each week. Some of these are timed and will require memorization of theory fundamentals such as spelling V7s, chordqualities in major and minor, etc. Others are based on the chapter material and will take up to a half an hour tocomplete. Regular completion of homework assignments will build the skills necessary to accomplish quizzes inthe allotted time.

If you are having difficulty with completing homework assignments within the allotted time, orchapter quizzes within a half an hour, and are regularly attending class, please make anappointment to see me! Do not put things off until the end of the semester when it will be toolate to do anything.

PREREQUISITES:Permission number obtained from instructor required for registration.C or better in Music Theory I, or demonstrated ability on the placement test administered by Dr Galand.

COREQUISITE:Sight Singing II (MUT 1222). Dr Galands written approval needed for exceptions to this requirement (for

example, if as a result of taking an aural skills placement test, he determines that you are better placed in SightSinging I or III).

    LATE POLICY:

Homework:I expect to receive all homework assignments on time. If you are habitually late to class, you will miss thehomework check which normally occurs during the first five minutes of class. Do not expect me to stop class inorder to check your homework, as we have a lot to cover each class, and it is discourteous to your fellowclassmates to take up their lecture and review time with your lateness. If you have been absent and have contactedme, bring your homework to my office hours or come a few minutes early to class and I will credit your

    homework.

Quizzes:Due to several cases of cheating during makeup quizzes last semester, I will no longer allow anyone to make up aclass during our regular class time. And, once I have returned a quiz to the class, NO MAKEUP QUIZZESWILL BE GIVEN. Therefore: if you are truly ill and have contacted me beforehand about missing class, you willneed to make appropriate plans to make up your quiz during my office hours. You will not have any otheropportunities to makeup a quiz.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:If you miss more than 8 classes, your grade will be an automatic F for the course.Otherwise, a small portion of the grade (10%) is based on attendance and participation. You begin the course at100%. If you miss one class, your grade drops to 95% for that portion of the grade. If you miss two classes,it drops to 90% and from then on, drops 10% for each additional absence. I do not make a distinction betweenexcused and unexcused absences. The only absence that will not count against you is a SOM performance.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:I require that all the work you turn in be entirely your own. It is easy for me to tell if a quiz has been copied fromanother student. Regarding homework assignments, you can ask a fellow student to clarify the instructions. Youcan ask a fellow student a question about the content of the course (anything in the textbook or handouts or classlectures). You can ask a fellow student a general question (e.g., Is it OK to have parallel fifths if it results fromthe combination of a passing tone and an anticipation, or What were the example numbers we were supposed todo?). You can ask such general questions even if they address something that pops up in the assignment. Whatyou cant ask is something like What did you do in mm. 3-4 of the exercise? or even Can I copy yourhomework? Yes, I see you copying each others homework before class. Dont be stupid.

You are encouraged to consult your textbookto find the models for most of your homework assignments.By using these models, you can assimilate the information and gain practice so that you understand the concepts onyour own.
