HISTORICAL NOTES Buckland (then Bochelant) was mentioned in the Domesday Book as a village of 35 households, a church and a watermill. These days it is a picturesque village covering 1362 acres, with a total population of around 580 in 240 households. It straddles the A25 and the Guildford to Redhill Railway. The parish registers date back to 1560, and the first recorded vicar to 1308. The present church is thought to have been built in 1380, and was extensively refurbished in 1860. The church has six bells, still regularly rung, and an unusual wooden spire. Some of the windows date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The window nearest the font suffered heavy damage from an enemy bomb in 1941. The glass was then removed and lost, until the 600 separate pieces were rediscovered in the Rectory cellar 52 years later, wrapped in newspaper. The window was restored in 1994, though part of it now forms the light-box at the West end of the church. Buckland is in the Diocese of Southwark (Bishop: The Rt. Revd. Christopher Chessun) and the Area of Croydon (Area Bishop: The Rt. Revd. Jonathan Clark).

THE ‘RIO’ LEGACY

3 September 2016 Buckland Parish Magazine

Dear All,

One of my favourite flowers is the Michaelmas daisy. It flowers late August until

early October, and provides colour and warmth to gardens at a time when the majori-

ty of flowers are coming to an end. It is also associated with the celebration of the

Feast of St Michael and All Angels, Michaelmas, which falls on the 29th September.

This festival day falls at a time of year when autumn is approaching and the days are

shortening. St Michael is celebrated as a protector from darkness and evil, just as

the daisy fights against the advancing gloom of Autumn and Winter. An old saying

goes:

“The Michaelmas Daisies, among dede weeds,

Bloom for St Michael's valorous deeds.

And seems the last of flowers that stood,

Till the feast of St. Simon and St. Jude.”

The feast of St Simon and St Jude, falls at the end of October ( 28th) so the season

of Michaelmas is roughly in line with our Harvest and Celebration of Creation time

in our church calendar. It used to be said that harvest had to be completed by Mich-

aelmas, almost like the marking of the end of the productive season and the begin-

ning of the new cycle of farming. It was the time at which new servants were hired

or land was exchanged and debts were paid. This is how it came to be for Michael-

mas to be the time for electing magistrates and also the beginning of legal and uni-

versity terms. Some of our universities still call their Autumn Term Michaelmas!

Traditionally, in the British Isles, a well fattened goose, fed on the stubble from the

fields after the harvest, is eaten to protect against financial need in the family for the

next year; and as the saying goes:

“Eat a goose on Michaelmas Day,

Want not for money all the year”.

Sometimes the day was also known as “Goose Day” and goose fairs were held. Even

now, the famous Nottingham Goose Fair is still held on or around the 3rd of Octo-

ber.

Part of the reason goose is eaten is that it was said that when Queen Elizabeth

I heard of the defeat of the Armada, she was dining on goose and resolved to eat it

on Michaelmas Day.

In our 2 villages we have had a lot to celebrate over the summer from Ordinations,

weddings, many baptisms, Teas on the Greens, croquet on the Rectory Lawn and

of course the fantastic Flower and Art Exhibition in Buckland, The “Art of Na-

ture”. These happy events bring us all together to celebrate and they are part of

what makes up our community. They are also times that build up our strength when

we face times of sadness or dark days.

So as we approach the new season, and look forward to new horizons, the new

term for some, and new opportunities may we all be encouraged to stand tall and

flower just as the Michaelmas daisy does in these Autumnal days.

And just so you can look forward to some events during Michaelmas look at

the busy calendar on page six.

Happy Michaelmas Carol

Congratulations —to our very own Reverend Carol Coslett on being ‘installed’ (a Church of England phrase) as a Honorary Canon at Southwark Cathe-dral, This is a gift from the Bishop in recognition of her services to the Diocese of Southwark—of which Betchworth & Buckland is a part. You are welcome to join the Choral Evensong and Installation Cere-mony at

Southwark Cathedral on

Sunday 18 September 2016 at 3pm -when Carol will be honoured, with a small number of others. Hon-orary Canons become part of the Cathedral’s ‘Greater Chapter’ man-agement team which meets twice per annum, and they may be invit-ed to preach at the Cathedral.

Is social media taking over your life?

TAKE A COURSE OF MINDFULNESS—IN BUCKLAND

When did you last spend a couple of hours simply alone, without any social media to hand? When did you last spend even a day simply being with yourself ? Terry Waite, the former Beirut hostage and C of E envoy, is concerned that social media has crowd-ed out any chance for stillness, for inner reflection, and is instead reshaping the way people interact with each other. Face-to-face encounter and simple conversations are no longer a priority.

You could try a course in Mindfulness—on our doorstep—in Buckland Reading Room. Mark Whale—a qualified teacher of Mindfulness, runs courses here in Buckland.

There are two 8-week courses, held on Wednesday evenings (7-9pm):

7th September - Wednesday 26th October 2016

2nd November - Wednesday 21st December 2016

BETCHWORTH ORGAN RECITAL—1 OCTOBER 2016, 4PM Andrew Cantrill, one of the UK’s most experienced and versatile church musicians, is giving the next recital on the Kenneth Tickell organ in Betchworth Parish Church on Saturday 1st October at 4.00 pm. Andrew has very fond teenage memories of playing Betchworth’s previous organ whilst a pupil at Reigate Grammar School.. He very much likes Tickell organs and currently teaches on one. Andrew’s career has taken him to three continents, working in schools, churches and cathedrals, and he has appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious venues as conductor, organist and singer. He has held cathedral positions in Wellington, New Zealand, and in Buffalo, USA and is now Organist of The Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, Suffolk. The programme for this recital will feature Scandinavian music built around a pair of Chaconnes (a baroque variation form) by the Danish composer, Buxtehude, as well as music by Sark (Denmark), Effestol and Grieg (Norway). The Norwegian pieces are particularly approachable and include the very well known ‘Wedding Day at Trold-haugen’ written by Grieg as a memorial of his and his wife Nina’s 25th Wedding anni-versary. The recital will conclude with popular French music by Joseph Bonnet, Lefébure-Wély and Guilmant. Admission: £12 (Under 14s: £8) (includes glass of wine/soft drink). Tickets available from: 01737 843498 or [email protected] or on the door on the day. [See advert opposite]

26th at 7.15, opera screening at Dorking Halls, £17.50, 01306 881717 There are just a few events in September to get the new season underway. The lunchtime recitals at St Martin’s church resume this month. These take place on the first Saturday of the month, at 12 noon and last for about 40 minutes. The concerts are free with a retiring collection in aid of the William Cole Church Music Trust which supports young musicians at St Martin’s. This month’s concert will be given by violinist Litsa Tunnah. At Leith Hill Place, the childhood home of Ralph Vaughan Williams, there is a spe-cial event celebrating the composer George Butterworth. Born in 1885, he was a friend of Vaughan Williams, but he was sadly killed in the Battle of the Somme just a hundred years ago. Composer Kriss Russman and biographer Anthony Murphy will give an insight into his life and music. There are two opera screenings at the Dorking Halls. Puccini’s Turandot (featuring the famous aria ‘Nessun dorma’) comes in a recording from Sydney Harbour, and there is a live relay of Bellini’s Norma from the Royal Opera House in London. Watermill Jazz meets every Tuesday evening, each time presenting a different group of performers from the world of jazz. Full details of this month’s concerts will be on the website.

WINTER LUNCHES 2016/2017

It is that time of the year again when we invite you to come to the start of our Winter Lunches. The lunch will be on Thursday 8th September in the Buckland Reading Room. For a trial period we are asking that you come to the RR at 12 noon and we will serve lunch at 12.15. As our regular visitors know we always have a bit of a rush at about 1.30 pm to clear away as the hall is needed again at 2pm. So we thought if we start a little earlier we hope to be finished by 1.45. We look forward to seeing our regular ladies and gentlemen and we invite anyone else from Buckland and Betchworth who has not been to our lunches to come and join us for a two-course lunch with coffee or tea, all for the price of £3.50. If you need more information please phone Carol Leeds 247399 or Liz Vahey 222144. Looking forward to meeting you in September.

BRITISH FOOD FORTNIGHT

17 September—2 October 2016

Hundreds of activities take place across the UK during British Food Fortnight. The event is the biggest showcase of food on the national calendar with celebrations including promotions, tastings and special menus in pubs, restaurants and shops, special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children's centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs.

Every year businesses and organisations across the UK take part, all enjoying the commercial benefits that participation brings. The public sector supports the event en masse with major hospitals and school catering services being involved. Wem-bley Stadium, Harrods, St Pancras train station, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Ca-thedral, the Cabinet Office, the BBC, Buckingham Palace, National Trust and even Grey Gables Hotel in Radio 4's The Archers are just a few of the famous establish-ments that have added their support. BROOME PARK NEWS It has arrived... and it is sitting on the forecourt at BROOME PARK.. A superb single occupancy wheelchair vehicle ....it is in excellent condition having only done 1165 miles although it is five years old....it could not be better! The villages deserve a huge round of applause.... When you think on it we only started fundraising for the vehicle in December last year when the Buckland and Betchworth Choral Society allowed us their retiring collection at the end of their concert. That started us off, followed by the Bridge afternoon and a wonderful donation from the United Charities. There is a small amount we still need to raise so we are going to have another Bridge afternoon on the 22nd November and fingers crossed if that is as successful as the last one we will be home and dry with the funds. It was used the very next day after we took delivery and has been used everyday since ! All in all it has been an amazing effort. THANK YOU!

On what clergy should wear on their feet

The Rectory St. James the Least

My dear Nephew Darren Thank you for sending me the photograph of you having your face painted at your parish's ‘Fun Day’ - although I can't help feeling that to label an event ‘fun’ is the most effective way of draining it of all amusement whatsoever. Why on earth can't parishes continue with the traditional title of ‘Crowning of the Rose Queen and Fete’, equally traditionally grimly enjoyed to the accompaniment of thunder and torrential rain. However, the one thing that caused me the greatest concern in your photo was the fact that you were wearing sandals. Sandals are only to be worn by Franciscan monks (without socks) and holidaymakers on Blackpool promenade (regrettably, generally with socks). I know that you will argue that Jesus wore sandals. This was mainly because reliable pairs of brogues had yet to be invented, but also because He lived in a hot, dry country. We live in a cold, wet one. The only appropriate colour for footwear for a parish priest is black and the only ap-propriate material is leather - although I will concede that can create difficulties. Wet leather shoes and polished marble sanctuary floors are a potentially lethal combina-tion. I well remember as a curate when old Canon Griffith entered the Sanctuary, having just got drenched coming from the Rectory. His feet moved across the marble floor some miles per hour faster than the rest of his body. Had he landed face down, the congregation may have assumed he was reverently prostrating himself before the altar. But lying in a supine position, staring in a dazed state at the rafters, only con-veyed inappropriate indolence, when he should be at work. However, do not take the alternative of wearing crepe soles. I suspect your present church will be fully carpeted - it seems to go with your sort of theology - and there will be no problem. But crepe soles and any sort of polished stone floor are a truly disastrous mixture. The slightest movement will make it sound as if you are being followed by a swarm of demented frogs. Your loving uncle, Eustace

And in particular on Saturday 10 September…

SEE BETCHWORTH FROM THE TOWER – AND TRY RINGING A BELL

An opportunity to look down on your friends!

As part of the Heritage Open Days event (8 to 11th September), the tow-er of St Michael’s Church will be open from 10.00 to 17.00 on the Sat-urday. Visitors will be able to go right up to the roof through the ring-ing chamber and the bell chamber to admire the view across the village to the North Downs.

Access to the ringing chamber is via a stone spiral staircase with rather low head-room – so mind your head! Then there’s a fixed stepladder to the bell chamber, where there’s just room to stand round the bell frame with its eight bells. Put your fingers in your ears as a bellringer turns over the tenor bell in the centre of the frame. From the bell chamber there’s a short fixed ladder to the hatchway onto the flat roof.

Because of the limited space in the tower, visitor numbers are limited to twenty at any time. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and must be over 1.2 m (4 ft) tall to climb the ladders. And all visitors should wear appropri-ate clothing and shoes if they want to visit the bell chamber and roof – trailing scarves or loose sandals could be dangerous on ladders.

On the Sunday afternoon there will be regular bellringing demonstrations in the ring-ing chamber, with the opportunity for visitors to try ringing a bell – although the bells are heavy, you don’t have to be big and strong to ring them: anyone can learn to be a bellringer provided they are over 12 years old and can count up to eight.

In the church there will be a small exhibition about the bells and their history, to-gether with details about the church in medieval times. You can see this in the church on all four Heritage Open Days (Thursday to Sunday). And on Saturday and Sunday there will be refreshments available.

NORTH DOWNS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Once more we are back at the beginning of a new school year. We have been joined by 60 children in our two Reception classes at Betchworth and Brockham plus the children who have joined other classes throughout the school. Some have joined us from local Infant schools, others have moved into the area from further afield. Miss Winslade has formally begun her maternity leave, with Mrs Tubb covering during her absence, and Mrs Bradby is now a permanent member of our teaching team. A very big welcome to all our new pupils and staff!

Our Open Mornings at Brockham and Betchworth will be in early November. If you know anyone who has a child due to start school in September 2017, or who will be transferring from a local Infant school, please tell them to look for details on our school website. I am

always happy to show prospective parents round our school sites, so if you are unable to make the November dates please give me a call and we will arrange an appointment.

All information about our school, including newsletters, photos of activities and information about what we teach can be found on our school website. Please do take the time to look at our website – we have many photos in the gallery of our activities from

this last school year - and find out what goes on at our school.

A small boy asked his mother for a cucumber to take to Junior Church. A slightly

puzzled mother complied. Later she asked what it had been used for. ‘Sorry, mum,’

he confessed. ‘I got it wrong. We were supposed to bring a newcomer.’

If parents haven’t learned something from experience, they can always learn it from

their children.

THE MARMALADE

‘Mummy, is God in our house?’ asks the cute 3 year old girl.

Mum is a committed Christian, and on the basis that God is everywhere, thinks

quickly and says ‘Yes. Yes he is.’

‘Mummy, is God in the Kitchen?’

‘Yes darling, yes he certainly is.’

‘Mummy, do you think he is even in the marmalade?’

‘Well, yes darling, I suppose he is in there’.

With which, the little girl quickly picks up the lid, screws it on and says ‘ NOW

I’ve got him’.

Should you want this joke explained, please contact Carol Coslett ! (Ed.)

Don’t be too quick to interpret the moment.

Just keep Quiet.

My encouragement is,

Never think anything is against you.

Everything is a blessing. Why should it be different?

Just be quiet. See how it works itself out.
