Knee Pain & Strength Study

Study Director - Dr. W. Anemaet, PT, PhD

at Regis University – Denver Colorado

Study Dates – January – April 2011

Introduction

Thera-Band exercise resistance bands are being used in this study. Seven of the eight thera-band colors are being used. The band colors used during this study are: yellow, red, green, blue, black, silver and gold. Each band has a minimum and maximum resistance value. Currently, calculations are being performed manually for each participant for their 12 exercises.

Computer Calculations

• The study director on the Production work sheet enters two pieces of information. The 1 RM weight and the deformation for each of the 12 exercises. The program will then calculate all the possible value/s for each exercise. These values are displayed in a table and the study director can select the appropriate options.

Two Macros are available on the RX Sheet. They are the CTL+Shift+S macro which sorts the exercise bands into their colors and ascending length. CTL+SHIFT+R restores the RX sheet to it original format.

04/20/23 JD Speckmann © 8

Band Cutting & Marking

When the bands are sorted into the band color and ascending length then the bands can be physically cut and marked. There are three values used in the calculation of a band. The Secure length is used to hold the band in the Velcro holder. The Excursion length is then added so the lines can be marked on the band. The third value is the Finish length to be added to the bottom of the band. Hint! remember to sort the bands into the original sequence CTL+SHIFT+R

Saving Participant Values

If you will be doing multiple sets of bands for a participant you may want to consider saving the current Production work sheet. Select the entire Production work sheet. Copy it. Create a new work sheet area and paste the copied sheet into this sheet. Be sure to save this work sheet as a unique value.

04/20/23 JD Speckmann © 10

Setting up for a new participant

Once you are through with your current participant you can reset the Production work sheet and RX Sheets by doing a CTL+SHIFT+N. This will clear out and reset all values. Enter your new values and you are on your way for this participant.

04/20/23 JD Speckmann © 11

Recalculating values for a saved participant.

• Find the correct - saved participants work• Copy the entire sheet• Select the Production work sheet• Select Column 1 Row 1 and paste the copied

work sheet into the production sheet.• Do the changes that are necessary. Go to the RX

Sheet and do what is necessary to create their new bands. Be sure to save the updated sheet as a unique item for the next iteration.

Input & Changeable Values

• Name, Client # & Date• 1 RM * X% - Current Value 80 %. If you

change the first value the other will also change to the input value.

• Selection – Select the band value for the correct length for the required exercise.

• Length Override – Enter an inch override value as required.

04/20/23 JD Speckmann © 13

Input & Changeable Values (cont)

On the RX Sheet there are four changeable values:

• “Secure” Length – This is the length that anchory the band in the Velcro – value 5 inches

• “Finish” Length - Additional length to be added after the last calculated excursion length – value 6 inches.

• Shortest excursion length after Secure length – Value 1.5 inches. • Longest excursion length – Value 20 inches.

If you change any of these values be sure to save the excel sheet and copy it to the production backup. The production backup is a safety precaution in case the production work sheet becomes corrupted.

Macros

This excel program uses three macros:CTL+SHIFT+N – Reset all values on the

Production and RX work sheetCTL+SHIFT+S – Sorts the bands into colored

group and ascending band lengthCTL+SHIFT+R – Resorts the RX Work sheet into

its original order

04/20/23 JD Speckmann © 15

Program Installation• Thera-Band Excel Calculation Equations needs to be saved

into it own directory folder.• When started, if macros are not enabled, the program will

allow you to enable them for this execution.Or

• A trusted macro location can be set up• Select the Developers tab• Select the Macro Security Tab• Select Trusted Location• Add this directory to the trusted location list.

This will enable the macros for execution to be executed each time you run this program.
