Hello Neighbors!
Dumpster Day has come and gone. Thank you so much to the families that gave up their weekend to help other neighbor’s with their clean-up. This event would not be possible if it weren’t for these volunteers. Thank you again Skip Gottschalk for putting this event together with the City, you are one-of-a-kind and LVNA appreciates you very much!
Our Fairwood volunteers were: Darryl Dowd, Pat Fletcher, Annie Gottschalk & friends, Rodriquez Family, Tom Watkins, Rudy Ortega & friends, Cathy & Rick Bray, Robin Lopez. Our Lakewood volunteers were: Dan Bailor & friends, Sarah Daugherty, Pat & Al Furtado, Marie Welch, Sherry, Fred & Phyllis Fowler, Beverly Mansfield, Anthony Anderson.
Our sales people Bev and Robin Woidyla made LVNA a little over $600.00! This will be used to help fund our neighborhood events: National Night Out, our Annual picnic, and the Holiday parade.
I would like to give a special thank you to Skip, Dennis and Leah for driving their own vehicles around the neighborhood to pick up re-useable goods for our annual sale. It’s America’s Night Out Against Crime!
The 30
th National Night Out is August
6th and the LVNA will be hosting an Ice
Cream Social from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, in front of the Lakewood Park Building. Inside the building, we will have Family Craft Projects. Come over for a free “sweet treat” and a fun project. ( Also, your newsletter editor will be there with her face painting kit !)
Sunnyvale neighborhoods throughout are encouraged to turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outside in front of their homes and get to know our neighbors. Or better yet, come down to the Park and enjoy ice cream & family fun! Sunnyvale has over 20 active neighborhood associations (and we are the largest!)
“America's Night Out Against Crime” was introduced in 1984 and has become a nationwide party night! (Continued on page 5)

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Library Survey Results
We included a survey in last month’s newsletter and we received 60 surveys back. There were a lot of good ideas for the new branch library. Yes, I said new branch library.
Of the 60 survey’s returned: NO = 12 YES = 48 (Continued on page 2)
The LVNA Villager August 2013 2 ©2013 Lakewood Village Neighborhood As-
(Cont.) To hire more Public Safety Officers, you need to also include the ongoing salary in the annual budget. It would cost much more to pay a single officer than to run the branch library.
The votes in favor of the library were from all over the neighborhood:
Fairwood side: 1 Prescott, 3 Sandia, 1 Pecos, 1 Tucson, 1 Blazingwood, 3 Manzano, 4 Socorro
Lakewood side: 1 Skylake Ct., 1 Lakedale, 1 Meadowlake, 4 Lakechime, 4 Lakewood, 2 Silverlake, 5 Twinlake, 2 Hiddenlake, 2 Stonelake Ct., 5 Lakebird Dr., and 5 Lakemuir.
We also had a visitor from a mobile home park on Wendell Dr.
The Comments from the YES votes were:
Suggestions included: Inter library loans, a children’s section with story time (in Spanish & English), a place for young people to go for homework help, Computers with internet ac-cess & Wi-Fi outlets, DVD/Videos/Audio books/Magazines, remove current communi-ty room and save money by putting in that current space.
Additional comments were: include contemporary architectural design like the 50’s neighborhood style, longer hours, Adult/Senior Computer classes, How-to books on home repair, gardening & decorating, a
section on the history of Sunnyvale, Community events especially in the evening after work rather than the afternoons (like at the main library,) a place to donate books & movies, and an outdoor seating/reading area.
Thank you to all that took the time to complete this survey. The City has already had discussions with some of the mobile homes, townhomes and apartments on the Northside of Sunnyvale. All of which are in favor of the new branch library. This survey was not to tell the City yes or no about the neighborhood’s feelings it was to give them feedback has to what we would want or not want here in Lakewood village. There will be many more neighborhood meeting’s to help the City with the design and contents of the library. Please watch for the dates in our monthly newsletter.

Library Survey Results
Continued from page 1)
Of the 12 votes against the library and extra parking, 11 were from the Lakewood side; 8 Lakechime, 1 Lakemuir, 1 Twinlake, 1 Lakehaven and 1 from the Fair-wood side on Socorro.
The Comments from the NO votes were:
Keep green space - The city of Sunnyvale currently maintains over 816 acres of open space. Here in Lakewood Village, we are fortunate to have 2 parks and the John Christian walkway. The proposed area the library would take up is small compared to the total area of the park area. Suggestion from other LVNA meetings, were that the city consider removing the community park building and incorporating it into the new branch library. (The community park building is in need of renovation or replacement.) This would minimize the building footprints, save more of the landscaping and money.
Hours to short – We can work with the city regarding this issue
Purchase bookmobiles instead - Bookmobiles have been tried in the past. It was too expensive and was not used enough.
Re-open pool - We have tried and at this point it is a dead issue. Also, the land is owed by the Sunnyvale School district. When Lakewood School needs to be expanded, this is the area the school district would consider first.
Use this money for more Public Safety – The funds to build the library does not come from the general fund.

Everything went rather smooth for Dumpster Day except for those of you who dumped at night or in the early morning hours. This leads me to believe that you were doing something illegal. Not only that, it was very rude to your surrounding neighbors. You know the saying, “a few bad apples spoil it for everyone”. The City has told us that Lakewood is one of the neighborhoods they enjoy working with, because the volunteers know what they are doing and are very helpful. Again thank you to ALL the volunteers!
Now for the elephant in the room, the new branch Library. Yes, the surveys were counted and the majority of the neighborhood is in favor of the Library. I would like to given a special thank
you to Instyle Hair Salon and Valero gas station for collecting our surveys. There were some of you not in favor and your comments included: save green space, no parking lot, re-open the pool, hours too short and no need for a Library. This Library will service the entire Northside of
Sunnyvale including all mobile homes parks, apartments, townhomes and condos. Lakewood will have input with the City regarding the size and contents of this Library. Please watch your newsletter for upcoming meetings regarding the Library.
“Man has...little wisdom-only enough to advise his
neighbors, never enough for himself...Nothing ever
comes at him head-on, in full view; it is always from the
side where everyone (else) can get a good look at it...the
poor fellow himself has no idea of what he’s up against.”

It’s America’s Night Out Against Crime!
(Continued from page 1)
“America's Night Out Against Crime” was introduced in 1984 and has become a nationwide party night! That first year, 400 communities in 23 states have
participated in and over 2.5 million. Since then, National Night Out has grown steadily. Last year 37.0 million people in 15,110 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide participated. This year over 15,500 communities are expected to take part.
While the traditional 'lights on' and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years. They include: block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.
The National Association of Town Watch (NATW), Executive Director Matt Peskin said, “National Night Out does represent the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year. It [NNO] is a night to celebrate safety and crime prevention successes - and to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days."

School’s Open, Drive Carefully! By Phyllis Fowler Summer Vacation is over and kids are
back in school. I found these safety tips at
www.safekids.org , check out the website for tips on safety basics, recalls & their newsletter.
Simple Reminders for Drivers: Slow down and be especially alert in residential
neighborhoods and school zones!
Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs
Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully
Take a few seconds to walk all the way around your parked car to check for children.
Watch for children on and near the road in the morning and after school hours
Reduce any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
Distraction among drivers is at an all-time high today, so try to make eye contact with the driver before you step into the road
Put down your phone and don't talk or text while driving!
Reminders for Kids: Kids should cross the street with an adult until they are at least 10 years old
Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
Remove headphones when crossing the street.
Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks
Never run out into the streets or cross in between parked cars
Make sure kids always walk in front of the bus where the driver can see them.
Try to make eye contact with the driver before you step into the road.
We need to be proactive to keep our kids safe as they head back to school. Whether you are taking your kids to school or driving through a school zone, we all can do our part to keep kids safe.
