1. DISC BLADE SCRAPER - As the C-Flex hanger moves up and down, on models so equipped, the disc gang and scraper move together. This stops the scraper from bottoming out on the spools or coming into contact with the gang.

2. TAPERED REAR GANGS - The precisely engineered preset gang angle assures that all soil thrown outward by the front gangs will be returned by the rear gangs. Sunflower’s three-sided blade on each rear corner produces a non-continuous furrow to minimize water erosion.

3. GAUGE WHEELS - This feature stops the front gangs of the wing frame from gouging, buckling or cutting deeper than the other gangs, promoting a level, ridge-free and furrow-free field. The heavy-duty gauge wheels feature a 5-bolt hub and 8.00 x 10 ply tire.

4. HEAVY-DUTY GANGS - 22”, 24” and 28” disc blades enhance residue coverage and increase ability to penetrate the soil. Large diameter gang shafts provide a solid foundation.

5. REPHASING LIFT SYSTEM - Eliminates all linkages, reducing unpopular wear points. Each lift cylinder is equipped with replaceable hardened wear bushings on both clevis and cylinder-mounted ends.

6. DURABLE LIFT SYSTEMS - Most Sunflower discs are equipped with a maintenance-free lift system. Maintenance-free lift systems pivot on UHMW plastic sleeves that are maintenance free.

7. C-FLEX™ BEARING STANDARD - C-Flex™ bearing standards on most models absorb disc gang shock, extending bearing, spool and disc blade life. The C-Flex™ bearing standards also allow for easy maintenance of the disc gang assembly.

2. WALkING TANDEMS - Walking tandems are available on all sections, allowing the machine to follow the ground contour, maintaining a more consistent shank depth. The tandem beam pivots on a set of greasable tapered roller bearings for smooth, long-lasting service. Three-row configurations are spaced 3” overall and five-row configurations are spaced 1 3/4” overall. The spikes are mounted to individual bars that are linked together with unique connector, allowing you to control the flexibility of the harrow. The spike tooth drag provides additional incorporation and effectively completes the seedbed process by breaking clods, leveling and firming the soil.

rolliNg treadersSunflower offers both conservation and standard treader wheels to match your farming operation. Hard surfaced teeth are available on the conservation treader wheel. Sunflower rolling treaders may be adapted to the full line of 2000 Series chisel plows. This attachment levels and firms the soil, providing additional weed kill while mixing and distributing available residue.

1. PRECISIoN SINGLE-PoINT DEPTH CoNTRoL - The single-point depth control can be operated from the ground and does not require that the operator climb on the frames to adjust depth.

2. oPTIoNAL HYDRAULIC GANG ADjUSTMENT - Enables the operator to adjust for different residue conditions from the tractor seat. The disc gang will adjust from 2” below the sweep to 5” above.

3. HEAVY-DUTY SPRING CUSHIoNED MoUNTS - For protection against obstructions, the springs also allow the gangs to penetrate more uniformly and prevent gouging in ditches or terraces. Adjustable from 2” below to 5” above the cultivator sweeps. Either manual or hydraulically adjustable.

The Sunflower 6630 Series Vertical Tillage system certainly isn’t the only vertical tillage machine on the market. it is, however, the only one with its unique features. And it is the only one with patent-pending Saber blades. The blades’ unique fluted-wave pattern design easily cuts through tough residue and efficiently opens cold, wet soils to the warming action of the sun, allowing producers to plant up to 10 days earlier in the spring. The front and rear gangs on the 6630 are also mounted at an 18-degree angle, allowing the 22” blades with 25 flutes and a 1 1/2“ concavity, to mix residues with just the right amount of soil. in effect, the ratio of soil to residue can be completely controlled by the operating depth of the tool. An operating depth of one to two inches sizes residue and mixes it with just enough soil to anchor the material and protect it against erosion. To lift more soil and enhance the decomposition, simply increase the operating depth to 3 or 3 1/2“.

Sunflower wasn’t the first on the market with a strip-till unit; but we did take the time to see what could be improved on existing models. Then we incorporated those changes — along with features that aren’t even available on many competitive models — into the 7600. Unique features include scrapers on the coulter blade and depth band, tool bar gauge wheels, concave-bar berm reels, a tow hitch and simpler adjustment throughout, allowing the 7600 to be easily customized for variable field conditions and personal preferences.

1. SPRING-LoADED BERM REELS - The spring-loaded 12” diameter berm reels are constructed of 1/4” x 1 1/4” concave bars. The reels are mounted on 1” arbors with triple-lipped greaseable bearings.

2. DEPTH-CoNTRoLLED CoULTERS - The large 24” x 1/4” coulter blades feature depth bands and adjustable dual function scrapers. blade hubs are mounted to the arbor with triple-lipped greaseable bearings.

4. PRECISE FERTILIzER PLACEMENT - A 1/2” x 3” x 24” NH3 knife shank with a 15 degree “Mole point” shatters subsoil hardpan and creates the perfect fertilizer zone. The point depth ranges from 4” to 10” and is adjustable in 2” increments.

5. EFFECTIVE RoW CLEANERS - The steel fingers move the sliced residue from the row just ahead of the shank. The row cleaner assemblies have a full 8” range of vertical movement calibrated in .25” increments. The tapered fingers turn on double rows of heavy-duty greaseable bearings which are protected by bolt-on hubcaps.5

1. HEAVY-DUTY FRAME - Like all Sunflower machines, the 9800 features an all-welded, box-beam frame for maximum durability and the necessary weight to operate in any soil and residue condition.

2. STANDARD WALkING TANDEMS - Walking tandem axles are standard on the main frame and all large wings to minimize uneven

penetration, while providing the necessary support and flotation in the field and on the road.

3. HYDRAULIC DoWN PRESSURE - Hydraulic down pressure ensures uniform downforce across the full width of the drill, as well as through the entire range of motion of the tool bars. An active hydraulic circuit, operated

though a cab-mounted control, allows the operator to change the down pressure on the go to match widely changing conditions in the field.

3. FoUR DIFFERENT RoLL oPTIoNS - A choice of four meter roll options — all constructed of stainless steel for lifetime perfor-mance — is available to meet your specific cropping program. Equipped with eight 1/2” deep bars, the high-capacity roll is suitable for most applications. The medium-capacity roll has twelve 1/4” deep bars and is used on smaller machines or for consistently lower seeding or fertilizing rates. Finally, the low-volume roll is ideally suited for sunflowers, while the canola roll has a pattern of shallow depressions for very low seeding rates.

4. GRoUND-DRIVE oR VARIABLE-RATE METERS - Choose between ground-drive and variable-rate hydraulic drive on all models. A magnetic clutch on ground-drive models permits automatic disengagement and engagement when the drill is raised and lowered, while the electric-over-hydraulic technology on the variable-rate drive system allows the operator to control the meter speed independent of ground speed. The variable-rate drive also provides the potential to apply product to a prescription map using GpS.

With approximately 4,600 acres of row crops spread across the southern tip of Illinois, Mark and dana Eddleman face a wide range of soil and cropping conditions.

“We farm everything from nearly rocky soil to pure black gumbo with silty loam and clay in between,” says dana. “And each soil type seems to require a little bit different action and approach.”

Added to the mix is weather that ranges from too dry one year to too wet the next. In 2011 alone, the brothers received more than 50 inches of rain, with much of it falling during planting time.

As a result, the Eddlemans may use any combination of their Sunflower tillage tools, backed by a Sunflower Model 9421 grain drill. They’ll go largely no-till, for example, on their hilly ground and when double-cropping soybeans behind wheat — using either the 9421 or their White planter to seed the crop. If they’re planting soybeans behind corn on bottom ground, they will often disc

the field in the spring and follow the disc harrow with the 5035 field cultivator. Likewise, if the brothers suspect compaction could become a problem, they will often use the 2433 chisel plow in the fall to break up any hardpan that has developed.

However, one of the newest and most versatile tools in their tillage arsenal is their 6630 vertical tillage machine.

“We’ve actually used the ‘VT’ tool behind our disc in place of the field cultivator, particularly when we’ve had a lot of weed growth from heavy rains that have kept us out of the fields,” Mark explains. “It will go right through that heavy residue. plus, we can go a lot faster with it, too.”

“The other thing we’ve started doing with the 6630 is going over corn stalks in the fall to size the residue and open up the soil for increased moisture absorption,” dana adds. “It’s just given us a lot more versatility than we’ve ever had before.”

In the meantime, the Eddlemans say they’re equally sold on the strength and ruggedness of Sunflower equipment.

“our Sunflower equipment is the only brand we’ve found that is built as rugged as we like it to be,” Mark relates. “We tend to like heavy equipment; yet, we also like the C-Flex disc and gang bearing mounts, which help cushion the disc against shock loads on the Sunflower models.”

“because we never know what the weather is going to do, we try to conserve as much moisture as we can and even create a reserve when possible,” dana concludes, noting that corn yields typically average 160 to over 200 bushels per acre as a result, while beans average around 40 to 50 bushels/acre. “by maintaining and using a variety of Sunflower tools, we’re able to do that, no matter what Nature dishes out.”
