Welcome to the 2004 - 2005 annual

Report to the Community for the Junior League of

Nashville. I hope you enjoy reflecting on the activities and

accomplishments of our members and those whom we serve.

Our theme for this past year was “There’s No Present Like the Time” and

our volunteers showed their commitment to time and giving in wonderful ways. Our

JLN leadership incorporated changes to our timeline that led to great successes in our fundraisers. We used our marketing and communication time more effectively with the help of new technology. We added new trainings, incredible new staff, supported new members and made sure we had time to thank and celebrate our community partners, donors, and friends.

It is with deep gratitude that I thank the 2004-2005 Board, Council and JLN Staff for their extraordinary leadership and tenacity during such a dynamic year. It is an honor and pleasure to serve among

these outstanding women, to live in such a giving community and to be

part of an 80+ year history with this wonderful organization.

Paragon Award WinnersThe Junior League of Nashvilleʼs Paragon Awards, funded through the estate of Florence Pennington, recognizemembers who set an example of excellence through their Junior League service.

Sustainer Service Award – Donna CheekThe Sustainer Service Award is presented to the Sustainer who best exemplifies how to lead and promote a life of voluntarism and community involvement. During Donna Cheekʼs active Junior League years, members volunteered at the Junior League Home for Crippled Children. “The Home was designed to take care of children who had long-term diseases and couldnʼt be cared for in a hospital. The interaction the children had with each other, the nurses, doctors, and volunteers, was incredibly beneficial to them and their families. I taught music to the children, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.” While Donna was JLN President, 1977-1978, the Home was at a crossroads and began an important partnership with the Vanderbilt Childrenʼs Hospital that still exists to this day. As she says, “The Junior League taught me to be mindful of the needs of women, children and families.” Thank you, Donna, and congratulations!

First-Year Active Service Award – Holly WinnThe First-Year Active Service Award recognizes the first-year Active who has given her time and service above and beyond the call of duty. Holly Winn joined the Junior League in 2003 to make new friends and to give back to her community. She credits her Provisional Advisor for encouraging her to take on the important job of Training Co-Chair. As a corporate trainer for HCA Healthcare, Hollyʼs experience in designing meaningful training programs served her well in this placement. Holly said, “I feel so fortunate to have had such a wonderful co-chair during my first active year. Weʼve enjoyed working together

so much that weʼre doing it again next year.” Hollyʼs leadership helped JLN form a new partnership with the Young Leaders Council while successfully carrying out many effective

trainings throughout the JLN year. Thank you, Holly, for your dedication, and congratulations!

Outstanding Service Award – Grace PadenThe Outstanding Service Award honors the member who best exemplifies the mission of the Junior League of Nashville: to be committed to promoting voluntarism and to improving our community through the effective action and the leadership of trained volunteers. Grace Paden joined JLN on the advice of her mother-in-law, a Sustainer in the Junior League of Chattanooga, and has been a valuable asset throughout her JLN career. Grace has held many positions within the Junior League, but credits serving as Operations Coordinator for the Minnie Pearl Mansion Show House as the time “when I came to understand the sisterhood of the League.” Grace continued to be involved with Show House as Operations Coordinator for Emerald Hill, League Power Chair for Hillcote, Co-Chair Assistant for Rolling River as well as this yearʼs “Home for the Holidays” Show House. During the past two years, she has double-placed on Show House as Parliamentarian(2003-04) and Vice President of Membership (2004-05). Graceʼs service is always impeccable, enthusiastic and effective. Congratulations, Grace, on receiving JLNʼs highestaward and thank you for your ongoing commitment to our organization!

Community Service Award – May Dean EberlingThe Community Service Award is presented to a non-member of the Junior League who has

demonstrated the ideals of Junior League volunteer service, leadership and dedication to improving our community. Over the years, May Dean Eberling has been essential to

promoting public service programs in Middle Tennessee by providing a voice for service causes. She has been involved in producing shows such as Urban Outlook, OpenLine, MorningLine, In Your Prime, and many programs advocating for children. May Dean began her broadcast career as community services director at WTVF News Channel 5 during the 1980s and now serves as the executive producer of News Channel 5 Plus. Prior to this she served as the first Executive Director of the Metro Nashville Historical Commission. During her nine-year tenure, the following projects were completed under

her leadership: the Hermitage Hotel, the Ryman Auditorium, the Second Avenue Historic District, and Union Station. May Dean has been an involved member of the Junior League

of Nashville Advisory Board since 2003. We are so pleased to offer you this award for all you do in our community. Thank you, May Dean, and congratulations!

Dinner With Friends

The Junior League of Nashville found yet another new way to combine fun with fundraising this past year. On Saturday, October 16, 2004, JLN launched its inaugural Dinner with Friends fundraiser for our cookbook, Notably Nashville. Dinner with Friends brought togethermore than 500 of our members and community friends in 23 homes to celebrate our cookbook and the great work of our organization.

This first-time event provided a festive venue for members and their friends to gather in small groups for food and fellowship, increasing JLNʼs visibility and, of course, raising critical funds for our organization. The concept for this unique fundraiser was for several JLN members to each host a dinner party in their homes,

all on the same night, with each party raising at least $1,000. Under the committed leadership of Chairs Meredith Griffith and Betsy Wills, our goal

of $50,000 was readily met!

A big thank you goes to our Party Hosts, all those who attended and especially to our Presenting Sponsors Publix Super Markets and Publix Super Markets Charities. Both of these organizations are also founding sponsors of our award-winning Notably Nashville – A Medley of Tastes and Traditions cookbook, and we appreciate their continued support.

Launch of the New Website

JLN became much more efficient this year through tremendous technological upgrades. In late August 2004, we upgraded our Raiserʼs Edge member/donor management system; in September, we began building a new financial accounting system; and in December, we launched our newly revamped website at www.jlnashville.org.

The improved website has a fantastic new look and efficient navigation capabilities. Numerous new features were added to enhance the ability

for members, partner agencies and the general public to connect with the Junior League of Nashville. Members are able to log in to our secure

system and have access to member directories, records of meeting attendance, important Council and committee information as well as training opportunities.

With our upgraded accounting abilities, members are now able to honor all financial commitments on line.

Under the attentive leadership of Technology Chair Jillian Waters, the new website, with its ability to integrate with JLNʼs existing member database, has dramatically increased communication and efficiencies for all aspects of our organization.

Training Women Volunteers

Fulfilling its mission to offer ongoing training of women community volunteers, JLN offered a wide variety of unique, rewarding and beneficial training opportunities this year. A few of these included:

Hearty thanks to all our marvelous presenters and instructors. We learned from your contributions and are enthusiastically applying what we learned in our daily efforts to build a better community through the Junior League of Nashville.

Alexandra Stoddard, author, acclaimed interior designer and philosopher of contemporary living and her husband, Peter Brown, spoke about the “Big Issues of Life” at TACC. Mrs. Stoddardʼs insights on living beautifully and spiritually each day have inspired an international following and JLN was thrilled to have her join us.

“Parenting by the Book: An Affirmative Parenting Project” with John Rosemond, Director of the Center for Affirmative Parenting. This training was held in conjunction with the Oak Hill School.

Renowned author and health promoter Ann Kulze visited JLN to lecture on her latest book, “Dr. Annʼs 10-Step Diet: A Simple Plan for Permanent Weight Loss and Lifelong Vitality.”

Hechtʼs honored JLN with a fall fashion show at their new Green Hills store and a $10,000 check to say “keep up the great work, Junior League!” Many Actives and Sustainers attended this fun morning to say thank you to Hechtʼs and The Mall at Green Hills.

Young Leaders Council partnered with JLN and offered a ten-week course designed specifically for JLN members. Topics included nonprofit financials, fundraising, conflict resolutions and many other worthy topics necessary for being an effective nonprofit Board member.

“Healthy Selfishness” and “Work/Life Balance” with Dr. Frances Roy, a Nashville psychiatrist and JLN Sustainer, returned and, as always, delivered inspiring presentations.

“Financial Planning” with Jon Ladd a certified financial planner from Smith Barney gave members useful information we ALL can use.

Young Leaders Training

In further fulfillment of our mission to providing trained volunteers within our community, the Junior League of Nashville founded a new partnership this year with the Young Leaders Council. Together, JLN and YLC established a Board Training Program exclusively for Junior League members.

The program, patterned after Young Leaders Council board trainings, lasted ten weeks and included instruction on topics such as fundraising, special event fundamentals, nonprofit financials, conflict resolution, strategic planning and more. Instructors were leaders in the community and professionals in the subjects offered. After the training classes were completed, each participant was placed on a non-profit board of her choice to do a one-year internship as a non-voting member, thereby becoming an alumna of the Young Leaders Council.

The following JLN members successfully completed this training in2004-2005 and we thank them for their dedication to beingcommunity leaders. Mary Lee Bartlett Catherine Beemer Diana Bradford Suellen Craig Kathy Davis Mechel Frost Madison Gray Beth Harmon Jean Jackson Hastings

This past year saw a big change in the timing of the Junior Leagueʼs largest fundraiser, the annual Decoratorsʼ Show House. This important event was filled with good cheer, many eager “Santaʼs helpers” and was the highlight of the Leagueʼs holiday season.

Despite the challenge of having only six months to plan this large-scale fundraising event, obtain sponsors, and execute the logistics, Show House Chairs Julia Moore and Debbie White handled the enormous task with grace, style and SUCCESS! The success of this event

started with a fabulous choice of homes. The 20th Anniversary Show House was held at the Caldwell family estate, a beautiful 1930ʼs era French Manor on 12 gorgeous acres in the heart of Belle Meade. This was the childhood home of Wentworth Caldwell and Sustainers Frances Jackson and Anne Parsons, all of whom still live in lovely homes on the grounds. Located at 100 Fransworth Drive, the estate lent itself perfectly to be transformed into a glorious winter wonderland.

Underwriters of this important fundraiser include Presenting

Sponsor, SunTrust Bank, and our friends at Channel 5, Ingram Industries, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Franklin Industries, The Tennessean, McGraphics and many, many more supporters who helped us raise nearly $300,000 for those we serve in our community.

Grateful thanks to our Show House Chairs and committee, designers, landscapers, homeowners, JLN volunteers and all those who attended. This holiday Show House put the entire League on display in the community and as we served, we shined.

Volunteer Days

Junior League volunteers logged more than 113,000 hours of service benefiting the community in various ways. A few of the special projects and events in which the JLN volunteers participated include:

Special Olympics “Fans in the Stands” -- In May, the Special Olympics of Tennessee invited Junior League members to be “fans in the stands.” JLN volunteers brought along their friends and family to supply the 1,100 special athletes with enthusiasm, supporting banners and cheers! The event was great fun and heartwarming for everyone who attended.

Spring Fling at Renewal House – In March, we hosted a Spring Fling at Renewal House, a recovery community that the Junior League of Nashville founded (for addicted mothers

and their children.) Nearly 20 JLN members, along with their families, brightened the day for the residents and their children. The Renewal House moms were treated

to manicures by Gayle Hogg, a registered beautician and JLN Renewal House volunteer. The children enjoyed Easter bag decorating, face painting, BINGO,

an Easter egg hunt and personal pizzas.

St. Luke’s Holiday parties -- JLN volunteers supplied games and arts activities for families in need who participated in St. Lukeʼs Thanksgiving Luncheon. The JLN members were also food servers during the luncheon

T. Alexander Andersonand provided transportation to and from St. Lukeʼs for some of our neighborhood seniors. Other holiday projects at St. Lukeʼs included a

Halloween party and Holiday Gift-Giving Programs during December.

Community Tool Shed -- JLN volunteers teamed up with Hands On Nashville to help build a Community Tool Shed and broke in the tools with

a spring improvement project for the Smithson-Craighead School. It was a wonderful time to connect and reach out to those who need us.

All About Women -- The JLN was a proud participant and sponsor of the 2004Worldʼs Largest Free Spa, “All About Women,” in August. League volunteers worked boothsand volunteered support for this big event where 19,000 women of a variety of backgrounds came together to experience free health screenings, massages, yoga classes, fitness demonstrations and lots of entertainment. League volunteers distributed samples of “Notably Nashvilleʼs” sugar & spice pecans, helping to call attention to the Leagueʼs delectable cookbook.

In addition to these projects, JLN volunteers also pitched in to support many other community events including Our Kidsʼ Soup Sunday and the Nashville Zooʼs Halloween event. Our volunteers also provided holiday cheer at Vanderbilt Childrenʼs Hospital during that very special time of year.

The newly created Keystone Grant is a $50,000 grant given annually to one agency. The grant seeks to serve as the link, or catalyst, that enables the agencyʼs idea, innovation, dream and passion to become reality. The 2004-2005 Keystone Grant recipient is Siloam Family Health Center and this grant will help create the “Junior League of Nashville Childrenʼs Room” at Siloamʼs new facility.

The Junior League of Nashville also offers annual Marketing Sponsorship Grants to agencies whose mission is in harmony with the Leagueʼs. This year, the following agencies received such grants: Gildaʼs Club, $5,000, to support its American Artisan event; House of Mercy, $1,500, for the Heart Dinner; Center for Nonprofit Management, $1,000, to support its Salute to Excellence event. Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell attended Community Breakfast and honored JLN with his thoughtful and inspiring words:

“In the early 1920s, before our community fully understood the needs of crippled children and how we should care for them, the Junior League was there showing us the way, establishing the Home for Crippled Children. Since the 1920s, you have been a great resource in the city of Nashville, helping where needed.”

“You are still showing us the way, establishing and supporting organizations that are reaching out to people in every corner of this community. You are making the lives of the people in this city better and for that you have the thanks of this mayor.”

The members of JLN thank Mayor Purcell for his comments and his support. We also thank our community partners and the JLN Community Research Committee, ably led by Angela Moretti-Goddard, and Community Council for their involvement in this very special event.

Award-Winning League

The Junior League of Nashville was proud to accept the 2005 Junior League Award for Vision at the AJLI Conference in May 2005. AJLI awards this recognition each year to the League that has been “especially successful at crafting its vision, consistent with the overall Junior League mission, and then aligning its members, projects, activities and communications to the overall strategic plan.” Because of the successful creation and completion of our Training and Conference Center, JLN came home a big winner! Thank you especially to Grace Paden and Valerie Smith for spear-heading our entry for this award as well as all the JLN members over the years who made our Training and Conference Center a successful reality.

Junior League Home

The JLN Home Board, which oversees the programs of the Junior League Home at the Monroe Carell, Jr. Childrenʼs Hospital at Vanderbilt, expanded its work in several ways. The JLN sponsored the Speakerʼs Bureau Training Program ($1,500) of the Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee (EDCT) as well as establishing the Junior League Resource Library ($5,000) at the EDCT.

In December 2004, the JLN Home Board contributed nearly $60,000 to the hospital to underwrite an outdoor play structure ($15,000), a toy-lending library ($12,500), two gaming stations for the Outpatient Tower ($24,000) and 24 ergonomic chairs for the Pediatric Critical Care Unit ($7,700). The Home Board itself donated $4,000 worth of gifts, delivered on Christmas morning, to pediatric inpatients. The Home Board also made a $25,000 gift for interior and exterior holiday decorations for the hospital and its patients.

Additionally, Home Board contributed in many other ways by providing funds for emergency clothing ($800), aquarium maintenance ($1,000) and books for the playroom ($700) to memorialize patients who bravely fought for their health. Home Board expanded its role at the hospital to include Junior League Night at the Movies which takes place twice a month at Vanderbiltʼs state-of-the-art movie viewing area, complete with treats and good cheer. Also new this year was the monthly JuniorLeague Entertainment Hour held on the performance stage in the Butterfly Garden. Both of these popular events ($1,200) are managed by JLN volunteers.

The Junior League of Nashville Home makes a contribution of $300,000 each year from its trust tothe Vanderbilt Childrenʼs Hospital.

Currently, the JLN has more than 40 trained volunteers at Vanderbilt Childrenʼs Hospital working ina variety of areas helping the young patients and their families through difficult times.

From polio to eating disorders, the Home Board has always focused on the pressing health concerns of the day, and to this day continues to have a positive impact on the health of our community. We are very proud of our partnership with the Monroe Carell, Jr. Childrenʼs Hospital at Vanderbilt and look forward to many more years of service together.

Annual Fund Giving

The Junior League of Nashvilleʼs Annual Fund continues to be a critical fundraiser within our organization. The Annual Fund fills the gap between the internal operations revenue of the League and our internal operations expenses. The Annual Fund allows us to choose amenities and resources that enhance each volunteerʼs experience. Examples of these enhancements include a user-friendly website, strong administrative staff and a Training and Conference Center equipped with the latest video and digital technology.

Thank you to all of our members and friends who supported the Annual Fund this year and helped us achieve our goal.

The Legacy of Giving

The Junior League of Nashville is grateful to the almost 100 individuals who have remembered our

organization in their wills over the past several decades. Such estate planning has provided an important legacy of

giving through our organization back to the community.

We celebrate and recognize the following women who have recently named the Junior League of Nashville as a beneficiary in

their wills:

Karen FlemingPatti Hart Smallwood

Pat Wallace

Their gifts will continue JLN’s history of making a difference for women, children and families in our community. There are two JLN endowments available to receive planned gifts of any size, as well as outright gifts of cash and stock: the Community Endowment and the Operating Endowment.

If you are considering naming the Junior League of Nashville as a beneficiary, or if you have already done so, please

contact the Junior League office so that we may thank you and provide the proper recognition.

Capital Campaign Contributions

The Junior League of Nashville established a Future Building Campaign in 2001. Donors were asked to make five-year pledges that would fund two facets of the League: the transformation of the Leagueʼs former headquarters at 2202 Crestmoor Road into a Training and Conference Center and the purchase and renovation of a newly located administrative office at 2405 Crestmoor Road. We recognize and thank thoseloyal donors who made contributions in 2004-2005 and applaud their visionfor our future.

We regret any errors or omissions in the following list. Please contact JLN Headquarters at 269-9393 with any questions or corrections. 17

Dinner with Friends

Notably Nashville continues to generate important funds for the work of the Junior League of Nashville. Building upon that success, Dinner with Friends brings additional donors to our

cause. The donors listed represent party hosts, in-kind donors, and guests of the many parties held throughout our community in October 2005. Proceeds benefited

our community projects and the training and support of volunteers.

“Home for the Holidays”Decorators’ Show House Donors

Our Decoratorsʼ Show House is the Junior League of Nashvilleʼs largest annual fundraiser. In this report, we recognize Corporate

Sponsors, Foundations, Patrons, Friends of Show House, Designers, Landscapers and all other In-Kind Donors. Though not listed in this report,

we sincerely thank all of the individuals who supported the “Home for the Holidays” Decoratorsʼ Show House by attending a Dine by Design Dinner, the Empty

House Party, the Gala, the Sustainer Luncheon, or Treats with Santa. We also thank those who shopped in our Gift Shop and who purchased a ticket to tour the Show House. Each and every contribution was essential to the success of this event. Proceeds benefited our community projects and the training and support of volunteers.

We regret any errors or omissions in the following list. Please contact JLN Headquarters at 269-9393 with any questions or corrections. 18
