When you look at all the meetings, small groups, and events going on in our church, it takes a lot of people working together to make it all happen. The ministry programs of our church are all organized under the Church Council. The Council meets on the last Monday of each month at 6:30. We welcome new members at our first meeting this month. Below is a list of those officers and a description of what the committees do. Church Council meetings are a time of reporting, celebrating, and visioning. Anyone is welcome to attend a meeting. Mission Fair The people of 1st UMC heed the call to "Go Do" throughout the whole year. Whether it's volunteering for Welcome Table , Family Promise ,or going on a mission trip, there are plenty of opportunities to serve others through the work of 1st Church.

On February 11th, we are giving everyone a chance to come and learn more about all the opportunities there are to serve. This Mission Fair gets underway right after the 10:30 worship service with a chili lunch in Asbury Hall. Come enjoy the food then spend time talking to the various representatives of each organization, mission and/or ministry to see where you can heed the call to Go.Do. This event is presented by the Outreach Team at 1st UMC.

Talking about Racial Reconciliation As we head into Black History Month, a new conversation has started on how to work on reconciling racial divisions within the United Methodist Church. On Sunday, January 28th, a group of about 45 people came out to hear Rev. Leah Burns (of 2nd UMC in Knoxville) present a detailed look at the history of race in the Methodist Church and started a dialogue on ways we can bridge the divide. This was the first of our Conversation Matters events for 2018. On February 25th, Wil Cantrell, author of “Unafraid and Unashamed” will join us for a conversation on new divisions which threaten the future of the United Methodist Church. He will bring copies of his book to the event, but if you want to read it ahead of time, you can find it on Amazon.com.

Mission and Adventure in Kenya

Are you looking for a bit of adventure as well as the opportunity to serve? 1st UMC and Kenya Partners are looking for people to come on a spring mission trip to Nakuru, Kenya. While there mission participants may be helping with:

Medical Clinic Outreach

Helping Children in Kenyan Preschols

Teaching Pre-K to 12th grade kids in a Boarding School

No special skills are needed, but if you have special skills, they will be put to great use.

The team will leave from here within a day or two of May 15th and return within a day or two of May 31st. Plan on being away for 16 days, with 14 of them being in Kenya. One way travel to the destination takes 24 hours.

After the work in Nakuru is done, there will be a trip to the Masai Mara Game Preserve for two full days of safari before heading back to Nairobi to catch the flight home.

The trip is expected to cost between $3,000 and $3500. That includes airfare, lodging, meals and transportation.

Please contact Ann Leatherwood at [email protected] or 865-661-5858 if

you are interested in this great opportunity to serve. More details are available at:

A sh Wednesday is the first day of the Lenten season. Lent is a time when Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting,

repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. Ashes are the Biblical symbol of mourning and repentance. The Noon worship service will be followed by a light lunch in Wesley Hall. The evening Ash Wednesday service at 6:30 pm will be part of Celebrate Recovery that evening and will be preceded by a light meal in Asbury Hall. Church Council Retreat

T his year, the focus for our Noonday Lenten Worship series will be on themes in a piano book, Near the Cross, arranged by Terry

Wilson, the Director of Music here at 1st UMC. This book will be published in March. Using selections from that book, we will explore the messages found in this sacred music with several area musicians leading worship and bringing the message. Following worship, a light meal will be served in Wesley Hall. Helping out one local school

After two Sundays of collecting disinfectant wipes and tissues, Rev. Sarah Slack loaded up her mini-van with the cold and flu fighting supplies. All the items were taken to Montvale Elementary School.

Thank You to everyone who pitched in by donating dozens of boxes of tissues and wipes! This was the first of our monthly Go.Do. themed drives.

In February we are asking you to bring in retractable ink pens and toothbrushes on the last two Sundays of the month, February 18th and February 25th. These items will go with our mission team to Kenya this spring. The collection boxes will be in the parlor area in front of the church office.

On February 7th, come hear Steve Howard. He is a native of East Tennessee and a strong ambassador of Jesus Christ. In addition he is a survivor, having survived a heart attack (while preaching) and a near fatal motorcycle accident. For more than 10 years now, he has brought the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the prisoners of the Blount County Jail and he mentors and sponsors young men who have been released from prison.

Special Thanks On January 21st, members of Scout Troop 81 assisted with the 10:30 Traditional Worship Service. We would like to thank them and their family and friends for being a part of this year’s Scout Sunday.

Good things are happening at Family Promise! Amy Large expanded her role in the mission and will serve as Co-Coordinator. Her leadership and service will enhance the efforts to end homelessness in Blount County one family at a time. 1stUMC last hosted during the week of Christms 2017. Since then two of the four families have moved into their own housing and Jennifer secured a job. An out-pouring of offers to volunteer came in after some churches in the Family Promise program dropped out unexpectedly leaving the week of February 11th without a host church. Dozens of new volunteers (including six from 1st UMC) came to a special training last week and are now ready to help with hosting duties. Thank you to all at 1stUMC who are stepping up to assist in the Family Promise Mission. It is comforting to be part of a congregation whose clergy take a leading role and parishioners try to serve others as Jesus would. Blessings, Mavis Ziegler and Amy Large Co-Coordinators of Family Promise at 1stUMC
